STUDY OF MAN

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the first Classic meeting of the 2023 Irish Flat season, the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival. We are delighted to be staging such a high-quality race meeting with plenty of international competition. I hope you enjoy the racing and maybe back a winner or two.

This weekend we will offer €2.35m in prizemoney which would not be possible without the support of our sponsors and of course, Horse Racing Ireland.

We are particularly grateful to today’s race sponsors – Tally Ho Stud and the Irish European Breeders Fund, Barberstown Castle, Tattersalls Ltd, Lanwades Stud, Scott Heider and his family, and Novibet for their generous support of today’s programme.

Tattersalls Ltd sponsor three Group 1 races over the weekend and are a highly valued partner to us here at the Curragh. We thank Edmond Mahony and his team and wish them all the best for the 2023 sales season.

I would also like to thank all the owners of runners here today - we hope your experience is a good one and we thank you for running your horses at the Curragh.

We have made some changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out Orbys Bistro, the Champagne Bar, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall as well as the mobile food options around the enclosures. Free seating is available for racegoers at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong.

There is plenty of entertainment organised throughout the weekend and we are delighted to welcome the Newbridge Gospel Choir and famous Artane Band to perform, while it is also Ladies Day with a great prize on offer courtesy of Cashel Palace Hotel, Moet and Finlay Volvo.

In 2023, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings in total and we have an exciting programme of quality flat racing on offer throughout the year.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday June 7th and will feature the Sky Bet Race to the Ebor Handicap, while the evening will also celebrate Relay For Life which takes place here on following weekend and of course the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby meeting is fast approaching on June 30th, July 1st and July 2nd when we look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh for more top class international racing.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BEST DRESSED COMPETITION

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO TEAM UP WITH CASHEL PALACE HOTEL, MOET AND FINLAY VOLVO

The style theme of the day is simply ‘Summer Style’ and we have pulled out all the stops for a super stylish getaway to the Cashel Palace Hotel in Co Tipperary, a former Palladian manor with gardens overlooked by the Rock of Cashel, and, following a meticulous restoration, is the sole Irish hotel on the Conde Nast Travellers Hot List for 2023.

WHAT IS THE PRIZE?

The winner of the first summer racing style competition of the year will be whisked off in a top of the range chauffeur driven Volvo, courtesy of Finlay Motors, and treated to dinner for two in the fabulous Bishop’s Buttery restaurant at The Hotel. Breakfast will follow the overnight stay in one of the beautifully appointed Garden Wing Superior Rooms and a €200 voucher will be included for some extra R&R.

The lucky winner will also be receiving a magnum of champagne courtesy of The Curragh’s official Champagne sponsor for 2023, Moët & Chandon.

The hotly anticipated style competition which starts when gates open at 11am will be judged by well known influencer Jodie Woods who will announce the winner will be announced at c. 2:30pm in Champions Hall.

Just one of the field has seen the racetrack before, so much is taken on potential, pedigree and profile Back Down Under looked a fairly straightforward juvenile on her debut when third at Naas last month, but maybe lacked the change of gear needed to be effective at this sprint trip. With no form to go on elsewhere, the eye is immediately drawn to the speedily-bred MATRIKA The daughter of No Nay Never is out of a half-sister to Coventry Stakes winner The Wow Signal and could be sharp enough on debut. Mysteries, another by No Nay Never, is out of a useful miler, while Night Of Thunder filly September Leaves is also bred to be precocious.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Aidan O’Brien has hit the ground running with his juveniles this season and though blinkered ahead of her debut, Matrika merits the utmost respect. Back Down Under finished a good third on her introduction at Naas and is likely to take a step forward with that experience under her belt, but preference is for GUNZBURG. The £160,000 daughter of Sioux Nation represents an in-form yard and should have the speed to cope with this trip on her racecourse bow.

VERDICT

Despite being sent off at 9/4f, QUEEN MAEDBH finished down the field on her seasonal reappearance at this track earlier in the month. She was the last off the bridle but found little at the business end of the race, suggesting she probably needed the run. Better is expected this time Johnny Murtagh’s Wave Machine was highly tried as a juvenile (contesting the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes) and won well off a mark of 85 on her final start of 2022. She’s not made much of an impression in either of her two starts this campaign and, though this is a step down in class, may still need a bit of help from the handicapper Lovejoy has been put up just a pound for her second last time out, but would probably be more at home on a softer surface

CURRAGH COMMENT

QUEEN’S PARDON was denied by under a length last time at Navan and she was a long way clear of the third. She has been put up 8lb for that effort, which may not be enough to prevent her from going one place better. The main threat might be Craft Irish, who showed improved form with the application of first-time blinkers on her latest outing. Others to consider are Marsa and Wave Machine.

THESTORYOFMORNYWING

The jockey Morny Wing dominated Irish Flat racing from 1917 to 1949, and created records that still stand nearly 100 years later.

He won the Irish 1,000 Guineas a record seven times, including the very first two runnings of the fillies’ Classic in 1922 and 1923 aboard Lady Violette and Glenshesk. He holds the record for Irish Classic successes on 23.

Wing was not Irish by birth, but he was destined to become a jockey.

Born in Doncaster in 1896, Mornington Albert Wing was the son of Walter Wing, a stable lad who became a jockey and a Post Office mail coach driver. Wing Snr named his son after his own racing hero, the then British champion jockey Herbert Mornington Cannon (also known as Morny), who was a champion Flat jockey six times in the 1890s.

As was custom Wing Jnr started his racing apprenticeship early – he went to work in Newmarket as a teenager, and he rode his first winner as a 15-year-old in 1911.

His first big win came in 1913 in the Autumn Cup, a competitive end-of-season handicap run at Liverpool, and he then won the following spring’s Queen’s Prize run at Kempton Park in 1914. It is a race that is still run today.

Wing went on to finish third in that season’s British jockeys’ championship. His domestic riding career had to be put on hold with the outbreak of World War I, but racing continued in India and the adventuring Wing travelled overseas. His best day in India came when he steered home five winners on the same card at Calcutta races in March 1916.

After his spell in India, Wing arrived in Ireland in 1917. It has been suggested that the young jockey headed to Ireland to avoid conscription, which had been introduced in Britain in 1916 but was never applied to Ireland. In fact, a UK trainer sent over two horses to run at The Curragh and Morny travelled over to ride. They both won, and Wing maintained the winning form –his first five rides in Ireland turned out to be winners.

He enjoyed further riding journeys over the Irish Sea and in 1921 he decided to make Ireland his home. He went on to dominate Irish racing for three decades winning the champion jockeys’ title on nine occasions, the Flat racing championship 13 times and establishing a record number of Irish Classic victories.

Most Irish jockeys of the day rode both on the Flat and over jumps, but Wing concentrated on the Flat and he reportedly was regarded as virtually unbeatable over short distances, particularly effective on two-year-olds. His success was recorded to be due primarily to his exceptional strength, his ability to get away quickly at the start, and the speed with which he could pull his whip through.

His reputation for timing and putting a horse in front on the line produced a career that yielded more than 2,000 winners and gave rise to the adage “never leave Wing out in a sprint!”

In Ireland he rode a five-timer on three occasions at The Curragh, but though he could never manage the elusive six, on one occasion he rode eight consecutive winners over two days.

His first Classic win came in the Irish St Leger in 1920, the following year he won the Irish Derby, one of his six wins, and then in 1922 he collected that first-ever Irish 1,000 Guineas. His seventh and last success in the fillies’ race came in 1947 some 25 years after that first victory.

He also won the 2,000 Guineas twice, the Irish Oaks once and the Irish St Leger seven times giving him a total of 23 Classic victories. A punter’s dream, his alliance in the 1940s with the big-time owner Joe McGrath and with trainer Michael Collins was a “bookmaker’s headache”.

Wing’s retailer was reputedly the highest paid to a jockey in Ireland up to that time. He was a dedicated sportsman, and reportedly had an “integrity that marked him out in an era of flamboyant rivals and frequently less-than-honest dealings”.

In 1949 he retired to train at his Kildare home, and in 1951 he won the Irish St Leger with Do Well.

He died in May 1965 and the Morny Wing Memorial Hurdle was run annually at The Curragh for many years in his memory.

Wing rode before, during and after both World Wars, and kicked home 2,000 winners through a 38-year career. To have had such a long stint riding, and to have been so successful in an era interrupted by world conflict, before the widespread use of the car and phones, is a considerable achievement.

In recalling the names of talented riders who have dominated the sport in the last 70 years, for Morny Wing to still be the winning-most Irish 1,000 Guineas jockey is a testament to his abilities, horsemanship and professionalism.

THETATTERSALLS GOLDCUP

The Tattersalls Gold Cup was granted Group 1 status in 1999 and since then it has become established as one of the most significant contest for older horses in the opening months of the European racing season.

One of the most memorable winners in those early years as a Group 1 was undoubtedly the great Montjeu. Trained by John Hammond in France, the son of Sadler’s Wells arrived at The Curragh for the 2000 renewal of the race having already won the Prix du Jockey Club, the Irish Derby and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe the previous season. Sent off at 1/3, he didn’t disappoint under Mick Kinane, showing a fine turn of foot to escape a pocket in the closing stages and run out the comfortable winner.

2005 produced a sensational renewal of the race that saw the five-time Group 1 winner Bago come over from France to race against the pick of the Irish colts in the shape of the Dermot Weld-trained Grey Swallow and the John Oxx-trained Azamour.

In what was an enthralling contest, it was the previous season’s Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow that succeeded in holding off the brave bid of Bago in a tremendous finish.

Andre Fabre saddled his only winner of this race in 2006, when Hurricane Run landed the spoils in the hands of Kieren Fallon. The four-year-old had won the Irish Derby here during his Classic campaign and finished that season with victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Fallon was also in the saddle for this victory as he made all on the colt, stretching clear of the smart filly Alexander Goldrun to win by seven lengths at the finish.

Since it’s elevation to Group 1 status, only three horses have succeeded in winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup on two separate occasions. The first was the Aidan O’Brien trained So You Think. The son of High Chaparral arrived to Ireland with a huge reputation having won five Group 1s in Australia for Bart Cummings and he consolidated his position as an international star by winning the 2011 and 2012 renewals of the Tattersalls Gold Cup in great style.

The second two-time winner of the race was the Roger Charltontrained Al Kazeem. The son of Dubawi got the better of Camelot to win the 2013 renewal and he came back to the Curragh two years later to beat Fascinating Rock, Postponed and The Grey Gatsby in an epic renewal of the race. This performance was even more remarkable as he had been retired to stud following his five-year-old campaign and to get the horse right back to his best was some achievement for trainer Roger Charlton.

The third and last horse to complete the double was no other than Magical. A mare with so much talent, she won six Group 1’s in her brilliant career and landed this race in both 2019 and 2020 in great style.

Champion jockey Colin Keane added his name to the history books with a superb ride on Helvic Dream in 2021, to reverse the form with odds-on shot Broome. The deep-cut ground played to his strengths, as he had previously shown how well he travelled into his races, and prevailed by just a short head. This race proved to be a nail-biting finish again last year as you could cover the first three home with a blanket as they crossed the winning-line.

William Haggas came home victorious, however, as Alenquer was always well-positioned and, with stamina for further, he was eventually able to wear down High Definition in the dying stages. Subsequent Prince Of Wales’s Stakes winner State of Rest had to settle for third on the day but only finished a further neck behind the runner-up.

VERDICT

This looks a hot renewal of this Group 1 prize, which often produces a high-class winner Luxembourg disappointed on reappearance behind Layfayette and Piz Badile over this course and distance, but may be able to reverse the form with that start behind him. It could be a similar scenario with the form of the Group 1 Prix Ganay, run last month at Longchamp, where Bay Bridge finished over a length ahead of VADENI Jean-Claude Rouget’s colt was caught a bit short of room in the closing stages and last season’s Arc runner-up may be able to get the better of Bay Bridge with a clearer passage

CURRAGH COMMENT

BAY BRIDGE was very impressive when seeing off 2021 Epsom Derby and King George hero Adayar in the Champion Stakes at Ascot, with the previously-unbeaten Baaeed only fourth. Sir Michael Stoute’s five-year-old made a perfectly satisfactory reappearance when third in the Prix Ganay and looks the one to beat. Vadeni was a place behind him at Longchamp, but has been supplemented for this and took the Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse last season before a cracking second in the Arc. Luxembourg had the French raider back in third when triumphant in the Irish Champion Stakes and will step forward from his comeback fifth in the Mooresbridge.

FRENCHSUCCESS ATTHECURRAGH

There is a very welcome French runner at the Curragh today, with Jean-Claude Rouget’s Vadeni taking his chance in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. The son of Churchill ventured outside of his native France on two occasions last term, landing the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown before a close third in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, and arrives at the Curragh with as good a chance as any.

There is precedent for a French winner in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, as André Fabre landed the spoils back in 2006 with Hurricane Run. Under Kieran Fallon, he dominated the field that day, making all in an impressive seven-length victory. That wasn’t his only victory at the Curragh either, as the same jockey steered him to victory a year earlier in the Irish Derby and the four-time Group 1 winner ended his career two from two at the track. That was André Fabre’s second success in the Irish Derby here at the Curragh, as he also saddled the 1995 winner Winged Love, who came out on top in a thrilling battle with National Stakes winner Definite Article that lives long in the memory.

John Hammond also adds his name to the history books of Frenchtrainers to win at the Curragh. Montjeu was an exceptional horse for Michael Tabor and he won the Irish Derby in emphatic style, kicking clear by five lengths. Success didn’t stop there too, as he went on to land The Tattersalls Gold Cup the following year. A truly remarkable training performance from Hammond. Montjeu ended his career with 11 wins from 16 runs which entailed six Group 1 victories, before standing at Coolmore Stud.

The last French runner to try his hand at the Curragh was Waldgeist, who was unsuccessful in his travels as he finished fourth in the Irish

Derby back in 2017. He didn’t return to The Curragh after that, but it was onwards and upwards as the son of Galileo matured into a top-class older performer who signed off a scintillating career with a victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

We are treated to the Irish 1,000 Guineas, which in 1983 was won by the Olivier Douieb-trained L’Attrayante. The filly is still to this day the only horse to win both the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and the Irish 1,000 Guineas, an incredible feat with the races just three weeks apart from each other that year.

Saturday’s Irish 2,000 Guineas has also seen a French-trained winner in the shape of 1996 victor Spinning World. Then based at Chantilly, Jonathan Pease would saddle Spinning World to become the first, and only, French-trained winner of the race as he cruised to a two-length success under Cash Asmussen to justify favouritism.

Before moving stables to Aidan O’Brien, Chicquita was trained to Irish Oaks success at the Curragh by Alain de Royer-Dupré in 2013. Despite being a maiden, the French trainer opted to send the filly over for a crack at the Irish classic and connections were rewarded for their boldness as she took the step up in distance in her stride to come out on top in a strong Irish Oaks field.

French-raider Vadeni heads to the Curragh to contest this year’s Tattersalls Gold Cup and again finds himself in a tricky little race.

Last year’s Coral Eclipse winner has gone from strength-to-strength each run and has proved he is versatile on any ground, winning on good-to-firm and soft. His best performance to date however was no doubt his second in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, when finish half a length behind the classy Alpinista on home turf.

The battle continues with both Luxembourg and Bay Bridge, who have both got the better of him in the past but being supplemented for this race, he must have a big chance.

VERDICT

Joseph O’Brien holds a strong hand here with three of the eight-strong field. HONEY GIRL ran in high class company last season but failed to get off the mark, however since switching to the O’Brien yard she has won her two starts this season, including the Group 3 Athasi Stakes last time out. Judging by how she hit the line over 7f, she looks well worth another try over a mile Stablemate Goldana was also a Group 3 winner on her most recent start, and that form has been boosted so she looks the main threat. Jumbly is also of interest with Ryan Moore booked to ride and is worth watching in the market.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Joseph O’Brien launches a three-pronged assault but even though Jumbly is the mount of Ryan Moore, she has a 309-day layoff to overcome and the pick of the trio may be Honey Girl, who stepped up markedly on her maiden success when bounding clear for an impressive Group 3 victory here. However, Willie McCreery has a good record in this contest and narrow preference is for his INSINUENDO. Too keen over 1m2f in the Mooresbridge Stakes, she is better judged on her C&D defeat of Redressed in the Park Express over track and trip in March and her good third in a Group 1 on Champions Day at Ascot last October.

THETATTERSALLS IRISH1,000GUINEAS (GROUP1)

This race was inaugurated a year after the Irish 2000 Guineas and the first running in 1922 was won by Lady Violette and she was ridden by Morny Wing who remains the most successful jockey in the race’s history with seven victories. Wing’s last success came a quarter of a century after his first as he teamed up with Hubert Hartigan to take the 1947 running with Sea Symphony.

Only four fillies have completed the English-Irish 1,000 Guineas double. The first to do so was Attraction in 2004 and she was followed by Finsceal Beo (2007), Winter (2017) and Hermosa (2019). Finsceal Beo came within a head of completing the near inconceivable treble of the English-French-Irish Guineas hat-trick. The 20/1 success of Classic Park in 1997 is particularly noteworthy as it was the first classic success for Aidan O’Brien.

There have been 28 English-trained winners of the race while the last of the four French trained successes came when Olivier Douieb’s L’Attrayante justified 4/1 favouritism in 1983.

In recent years, Irish racing’s biggest names have tasted success in this race, with Aidan O’Brien winning in 2014, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Jessica Harrington won in 2018 with Alpha Centauri and Jim Bolger landed the spoils in 2015 with Pleascach.

Last year saw Dermot Weld land his third renewal of this prestigious race. His successes came with Nightime (2006), Bethrah (2010) and Homeless Songs (2022), giving Chris Hayes a taste of Classic success, which ended the Aidan O’Brien dominance.

This looks to be another success story for Aga Khan and Dermot Weld, as Tahiyra looks a smart filly for all involved.

The daughter of Siyouni was an impressive winner here over the 7f trip, taking the Moyglare by two-and-a-quarter-lengths over rival again today Meditate.

She was all the hype in the English equivalent of this race at Newmarket, when sent off a hot 6-4 favourite, just falling to Mawj. Unfortunately, she didn’t get the best of starts but still travelled powerfully through the race to suggest there is more to come from this improving filly

With race fitness on her side, she is the one they all have to beat.

When looking back through the roll of honour, one name stands out more than any other, Aidan O’Brien. The master of Ballydoyle has saddled no fewer than 10 winners of the 1000 Guineas, including four of the last five. He began training in 1996 and by 1997 had already trained his first 1000 Guineas winner, Classic Park. The 2001, 2003 and 2008 renewals all went the way of the Tipperary trainer and since 2010 he’s taken home the prize money six times. Imagine went onto complete the Epsom Oaks double and the top trainer returns this year with Dower House, Meditate and the supplemented Jackie Oh.

The name O’Brien hasn’t always been a regular on the honours list and despite the legendary Vincent O’Brien winning the race three times between 1966 and 1979, there has been a whole host of others to claim the prize. Father and son Kevin and Paddy Prendergast won the race six times between them, while Dermot Weld has won the race four times. The Irish tends to dominate on home soil but British trainers have come over to take the prize back across the Irish Sea. Mick Channon, Sir Michael Stoute, Luca Cumani, Mark Johnston and more recently Adrian Keatley have all claimed the prize.

While trainers are masters of getting their horses to the track, their jurisdiction ends once they go into the stalls and it is down to the jockeys to get them home.

With Aidan O’Brien having such a hold of the race, it’s no surprise to see Ryan Moore and Seamie Heffernan with eight wins between them. Seamie became the first jockey since Morny Wing to win the race in back-to back years when winning on Empress Josephine.

The leading jockey in the race is Morny Wing, who won the race seven times in the early to mid-1900’s. Seamie Heffernan is close on his heels but still has a way to go if he wants to become the top jockey. The late Pat Smullen was a master in the saddle and has two wins to his name in more recent years, while the famed Lester Piggott has two.

Former Ballydoyle rider Jamie Spencer has won the race three times but interestingly enough, none of them came for Aidan O’Brien. Walter Swinburn won the race four times in a 20-year timeframe, with his final success happening on the Geoff Wragg trained Marling in 1992.

WHATISACLASSIC?

The Classics are five Group 1 races which are all run at the Curragh. Four of the five races are restricted to three-year-olds, and showcase the best horses of the three-year-old generation which shape the breed of the throughbred horse.

The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger.

The Irish Classics are slightly different to the other European Classics, as the Irish St Leger is not age restricted, so is open to horses aged three and older.

THETATTERSALLS

1,000GUINEASPREVIEW

Ten go to post in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas in what looks to be a cracking renewal. Dermot Weld won the contest last year with the impressive wide-margin victor, Homeless Songs, and his Tahiyra is a strong favourite here to give the trainer back-to-back successes in the race. She emerged on the scene at the top-level after a taking victory in the Moyglare Stud Stakes last term, and returned with a close second in the English version of the 1,000 Guineas. She was off for 238 days on that occasion and perhaps just lost out to a fitter rival, so should come on for that run here and she sets the standard. Weld also sends Tarawa for the same owners, who finished a good second in the Group 3 Cornelscourt Stakes on seasonal reappearance, although she does appear to be stable number two on this occasion.

Meditate has been behind the favourite on two occasions so far in her career, both on soft ground. She did however win the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf on quick ground and will be seen to better effect on a faster surface here. Aidan O’Brien has won the race ten times, and the daughter of No Nay Never could be a big danger to the market leader. O’Brien has two others in the field, Jackie Oh and Dower House. Jackie Oh is the most unexposed of the pair, landing a maiden on debut in March from a next time out winner before a second in Listed company stepped up to 10f. Dower House has just one win from seven starts, but has kept top company with all of her last four starts at Group or Listed level, although this requires a step up.

Jessica Harrington landed the spoils here in 2018 with Alpha Centauri and sends maiden Eternal Silence in search of success again. All of her three starts have come here at the Curragh, including a third in the Moyglare Stud, and she will appreciate the quick ground and step back up to a mile. Aspen Grove got the better of that filly here in Group 3 company last term and made an encouraging return when third on reappearance. However, James Stack’s other runner, You Send Me, has an eye-catching jockey booking in the form of Colin Keane. The maiden winner showed promise when second in the Amethyst Stakes last time and could improve again here.

The sole English raider in the field is Breege for John Quinn, who placed twice in Group 3 company as a two-year-old and makes her seasonal debut here in a bid to take the prize back to Yorkshire with her. Jim Bolger has trained the winner of this contest twice, last back in 2015, and he saddles Comhra. She finished just over a length of Meditate as a two-year-old and tackles Group 1 company for the first time here after a pair of mid-division finishes in Group 3 company this term.

This year’s Irish 1,000 Guineas looks at the mercy of TAHIYRA, who sets a very high standard on the back of her close second in the English equivalent at Newmarket. Dermot Weld’s daughter of Siyouni was the best of these as a two-year-old and given she showed all the signs that she has trained on at three, she should take all the beating. Aidan O’Brien, as always, has a strong hand, and while Meditate looks the most likely of his, keep an eye on Jackie Oh She was supplemented for this race and she looks likely to appreciate a better surface than she encountered at Navan last time

CURRAGH COMMENT

Last season’s champion two-year-old filly thanks largely to her impressive Moyglare success, TAHIYRA was a warm order for the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. She looked the likely winner coming into the Dip, but a big mid-race move and possibly the lack of a prep run told and she was fought off by Mawj. She was still a long way clear of the third, though, and can taste Classic glory today. Meditate was runner-up in the Moyglare and only sixth at Newmarket, but she showed her brilliance at the Breeders’ Cup and better is expected. It is interesting that her trainer Aidan O’Brien has opted to drop Jackie Oh back down to a mile, while Moyglare third Eternal Silence is another who could get involved at a bigger price.

WIN: TAHIYRA DANGER: Meditate

THANK YOU

The Curragh would like to thank Moyglare Stud for their support of the Stable Staff Canteen for their 2023 racing season.

HORSEWELFARE-APRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

The Curragh would like to acknowledge the generous support of Scott Heider and his family today and celebrate their growing association with horse racing in Ireland.

Scott Heider and his family has been involved with racing in Ireland for seven years now. The history of the Irish horse is what initially drew them in and caused them to expand their racing operation from the States to Ireland.

“It’s just been a fantastic experience for us. We love our partnership with Joseph O’Brien and we’ve been very fortunate to race some talented individuals on Irish racecourses the last few years.

Horse Racing Ireland has been a pleasure to work with as they always seem to go out of there way to make sure our experience is quite special.”

“I began racing and breeding thoroughbreds with my father 26 years ago in The States. We’ve enjoyed some terrific times and been blessed with a number of high calibre horses including 2019 Grade I winner “Mia Mischief”. But there’s something extra special about racing in Ireland with its incredible history.”

The Heider’s success has been marked with victories on some of racing’s biggest days. Crossfirehurricane won on debut at Limerick and followed that up with three successive victories, notably in the Listed Patton Stakes at Dundalk and then the Gallinule Stakes, which they sponsored earlier in the season.

The talented Pista has also showcased her talent, progressing rapidly under the care of Joseph O’Brien to take the Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown before following up in the Group 2 Park Hill at Doncaster in 2021. She is a highlyexciting mare but has yet to be seen this season.

Agartha is another smart filly that Scott has on his hands in the Joseph O’Brien stable. She landed the Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown in fantastic style, before kicking on again to land the Debutante Stakes here at the Curragh last season. She has showed she remains a top force too with two seconds in Group 3 company, before stepping up to the top ranks here at the Curragh when a solid fifth in the 1,000 Guineas, won by Homeless Song. Despite a below-par effort on seasonal debut, she bounced back in style to finish runner-up in the Athasi Stakes and more success should flow shortly.

Twilight Spinner enjoyed success in that race last year, landing the Athasi Stakes in great style but has been kept under the radar since finishing a remote fifth in the Lanwades Stud Stakes.

More recently, the four-year-old Brostaigh has proved to be a force since dropping back down to the minimum trip. The bright filly landed a Listed race at Naas before taking a trip overseas, in which she conquered a Group 2 Chantilly.

The Heider’s affiliation with the Curragh can be found through their welcome sponsorship of the Round Tower Stakes and the Gallinule Stakes, two significant races in the Irish racing calendar.

VERDICT

The Tetrarch Stakes looks the form line to concentrate on here, with both Drumroll and MISTER MISTER, the second and third in that race, taking each other on again. Joseph O’Brien has won two of the last three runnings of the Gallinule Stakes and Mister Mister could continue the good run. He was probably given too much to do last time over course and distance, but ran on in eye-catching fashion and a more positive ride should see him in a better light. Drumroll got first run on him there and should go well again, while the form of Kingswood’s maiden win at Cork has been franked.

CURRAGH COMMENT

DRUMROLL chased home the talented Paddington in the Tetrarch Stakes over a mile here at the beginning of the month and it would be no surprise to see the son of Deep Impact go one better now upped in trip. Mister Mister was third on that occasion and is another who should relish the extra couple of furlongs here, while Pivotal Trigger and the unexposed Save Your Love are the pick of the remainder.

2022 - 1st Kiss You Later

This 1m2f maiden features some very nice types on paper Aidan O’Brien has two in the race, with High Chieftess, who displayed plenty of promise over an inadequate trip at Leopardstown last time, perhaps the more likely of the pair Star Galaxy should improve for her fourth to Epsom Oaks favourite Savethelastdance, but the one who looks very interesting is Dermot Weld’s EZIVA

The beautifully bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro looks very much the type on paper and we’ve seen plenty of Weld-trained fillies win on their debut before

CURRAGH COMMENT

Most of these have potential to improve now they are faced with a sterner test of stamina and the likes of Star Galaxy, Esquiline and High Chieftess are all in capable hands as they set out on the next phase of their development. However, the one that appeals most on pedigree is EZIVA, whose dam won the Group 2 Blandford Stakes for this yard here in 2018. It’s noteworthy that the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro is pitched straight in at this sort of trip and a big run is expected from the Aga Khan-owned filly on debut.

VERDICT

A wide-open handicap over 1m6f to round off the card and cases can be made for plenty The booking of Oisin Murphy catches the eye on Noel Meade’s BLACK HAWK EAGLE and he could go well if in the same form as when recording a good victory over 1m5f in a Navan handicap two starts ago Newfoundland was quietly fancied for a Royal Ascot handicap last year and certainly isn’t without a chance on his second start for Joseph O’Brien, while Almuhit is fairly handicapped on the best of his form over hurdles.

CURRAGH COMMENT

A typically wide-open handicap to round out proceedings on a fantastic weekend of action, and marginal preference is for STAR KISSED. The Sea The Stars filly struck in a maiden at Bellewstown last month and has been allocated an opening mark of 79 which, judged on her pedigree alone, could prove extremely lenient. The Very Man looks well treated based on his NH form and must be seriously considered, along with Newfoundland, for all that he needs to bounce back from a disappointing run at Tipperary. Others to note include Mellow Magic, Black Hawk Eagle and Mr Rango.
