I would like to extend a warm welcome to the first Classic meeting of the 2023 Irish flat season, the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival. We are delighted to be staging such a high-quality race meeting with plenty of international competition. I hope you enjoy the racing and maybe back a winner or two.

This weekend we will offer €2.35m in prizemoney which would not be possible without the support of our sponsors and of course, Horse Racing Ireland.

We have made some changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out Orbys Bistro, the Champagne Bar, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall as well as the mobile food options around the enclosures. Free seating is available for racegoers at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong.

There is also plenty of entertainment organised throughout the weekend including a concert by Abbaesque in Champions Hall after racing this evening

In 2023, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings in total and we have an exciting programme of quality flat racing on offer throughout the year.

We race again here tomorrow and Sunday with Group 1 action each day and of course the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby meeting is fast approaching on June 30th, July 1st and July 2nd when we look forward to welcoming you back here for more top class international racing.

It’s OCEAN BAROQUE that sets the standard though, after finishing a good second on debut over this course and distance That form has since been boosted and he has every chance of going one better

CURRAGH COMMENT

OCEAN BAROQUE offered plenty of encouragement when filling the runner-up spot over C&D on his racecourse bow earlier this month and the now-gelded son of Caravaggio must hold every chance of building on that. Jakajaro will be worth monitoring closely in the market, having recorded a staying-on sixth over 5f at Cork on his debut, along with Joseph O’Brien’s newcomer Absolute Advantage. Others worthy of consideration include Velvet Skies and Nemonte.

This fillies maiden looks a tricky puzzle to solve Of those that have run, better can be expected of Jessica Harrington’s DANVERS GOLD, who put in a good debut performance to finish third to the well-regarded Never Ending Story Daisy Jones is another who could go well in a first-time visor She ran on nicely over 5f last time at Navan and the step up to 6f should suit. CURRAGH COMMENT

MACHNAMH ran her best race to date when weakening into fourth over a mile at Naas earlier in the month and Jim Bolger’s filly could gain a breakthrough success now dropped in distance. Danvers Gold offered plenty of encouragement on her third-placed debut here last June and the daughter of Galileo is feared most. Roaming Star often goes well and is respected, while newcomers Nelda and Ostraka require market checks.

Despite being slowly away on her most recent start over 7f, the Churchill filly stayed on well to win going away and another bold bid is expected over this extra furlong. Impact Warrior is a solid yardstick and warrants consideration following her second at Killarney last time out. She was sent off the 2/1 favourite that day and only beaten a head by a potentially smart filly. Of the rest, Clounmacon may be suited by better ground, having finished down the field on heavy going in the Group 3 Cornelscourt Stakes earlier this month.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Bellaphina surprised a few when winning a Limerick maiden in comprehensive style last month, giving the impression this extra furlong could bring out further improvement. However, the vote goes to the hat-trick seeking SNOWCAPPED, who was a most impressive scorer over 7f here earlier this month and can defy the 11lb rise she received for that success. Tea Olive is another who makes appeal having performed well on all three starts so far this season.

The form of SUBZERO’s second last time at Leopardstown could be enough to take this seven-furlong maiden. Aidan O’Brien’s son of Galileo was a runner-up to Sharlouk, who has subsequently finished second in Listed company, so a repeat performance from Subzero here will make him tough to beat. Jessica Harrington’s newcomers should always be respected in these types of races, and the well-bred Beyond The Steps is another worthy of consideration. SHE’S IN THE GAME returned from a break to strike at Dundalk and now goes off an 11lb higher mark. At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.

A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority

A very competitive Novibet Emerald Mile, with 20 runners set to go to post. Several look to hold solid claims and few are hard to rule out, notably Gavin Cromwell’s EARLS The six-year-old won a competitive Cork handicap last time and there could be more to come.Another to keep an eye on could be Gambe Veloci who makes his first start in handicap company after a taking win at Limerick last time Also, don’t rule out a big run from Pierre Lapin. He was a talented two-yearold and has shown bits and pieces of form to suggest there might be a big race in him.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Dunum continues to go from strength to strength and was a clear-cut winner on his Limerick return, while Earls burst back into life when denying All Lies Ahead at Cork. Joseph O’Brien holds a strong hand and while there is no denying Gambe Veloci was impressive when breaking through at Limerick, a chance is taken on his returning stablemate POINT GELLIBRAND, who has been set some stiff assignments. Tosen Wish, a former inmate of O’Brien’s, caught the eye when fifth in Earls’ Cork race.

The Curragh and IEBF are delighted to honour Habitat with the naming of the 7th race this evening

Purchased at the sales for $105,000, the son of Sir Gaylord was ruled out as a Juvenile, due to a few niggling injuries he picked up. Some may have given up on a horse with such issues but Habitat quickly began to repay Charles Engelhard’s perseverance at the third time of asking when he was an eased down five-length winner at Haydock in a minor contest.

His was immediately stepped up in Grade and headed to Newbury for the Lockinge Stakes. The field was awash with talented animals, including the 2000 Guineasplaced Colts, Jimmy Reppin and Tower Walk. There was sustained market support and he halved in price, eventually going off 10-1. Habitat led inside the final furlong and eventually prevailed by half a length from Jimmy Reppin. The rest of the field was nowhere to be seen and you couldn’t help but be impressed by that effort.

It proved to be no flash in the pan and his ability was confirmed two weeks later when he was beaten just half a length by the dual English and Irish Guineas hero Right Track, in a gruelling St James’s Palace Stakes. He was receiving no weight allowance as he had in the Lockinge, so this effort could be marked up even further. He was given two months off the track to get some well-earned rest but returned in the Autumn to try his hand in France. He easily defeated his rivals on better ground in the Prix Quincey at Deauville and the following week the conqueror retuned to more familiar shores to attempt to win the Wills Mile at Goodwood. He faced old adversary Jimmy Reppin but again he dispatched him in even more emphatic style, also in behind him was the brilliant filly Lucyrowe. None of the three were ever beaten again on the racecourse.

Despite his win, Habitat looked to be unsettled by the quicker surface and didn’t go to the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes due to the firmness of the ground. Instead, he returned to France for a final racecourse appearance in the Prix Du Moulin on ‘Arc day. He scored by a brilliant two-lengths to round off what had been a brilliant three-year-old career. He retired to stud at Grangewilliam Stud in Ireland, where he was an excellent stallion, his time at stud came to an end in 1986, rounding off what had been quite thquite the racing and breeder career.

Habitat was an immediate success as a stallion, siring 403 winners and 90 stakes winners from 725 named foals, most proving effective over a mile or shorter.
