I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the second day of the Curragh’s Autumn Festival of Racing a new addition to the season here at the Curragh. After two years of Covid restrictions, we are very much enjoying being able to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh and I hope that you have a good day.

We are very grateful to today’s race sponsors the Irish European Breeders Fund, the Friends of the Curragh Racecourse, William Hill and Dermot Weld and his family who are supporting the Weld Park Stakes for the 40th year.

We are particularly pleased to host Europe’s most valuable flat handicap, the Friends of the Curragh Irish Cesarewitch which is the brainchild of Joe Keeling who was instrumental in the redevelopment of the Curragh Racecourse. A competitive full field of thirty runners over this traditional Curragh distance will be a sight to behold. We are pleased to have teamed up with thirty bars from across County Kildare who have all drawn a horse in the race and selected a charity or community group who will benefit from a generous prize fund which will go to the bars whose horses finish in the first

5 placed horses we wish them all the very best of luck!.

We are also delighted to partner with Into Kildare with the staging of Taste of Kildare which is a great addition to the weekend showing the fantastic variety of food produced in County Kildare

We have made some changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. Free seating is also available for racegoers at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong.

I would like to thank all owners with runners here today also we hope your experience is a good one and we thank you for your support.

HOW TO READ RACECARD 13 5 4 6 7

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

MOUNT KING finished a far from disgraced fifth on his racecourse bow over 7f, and the fact that he kept on well on that occasion suggests a stiffer stamina test today should work in his favour. He can make his presence felt, along with Starry Heavens, who has shown plenty of promise in all three career starts. Cape Bridgewater boasts an appealing pedigree and completes the shortlist for powerful connections.

In this competitive contest it may pay dividends to opt for FREEDOM FALLS, who has been edging in the right direction on her three outings. Following a career-best effort, when fourth at this venue last time out, the Jack Davison-trained filly can continue her ascendancy in this contest. Lord Massusus shed the maiden tag in convincing style at Listowel on Tuesday and merits the utmost consideration, while Winemaker warrants interest in the hope of maintaining his unbeaten record.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Art Power is sure to be popular here, having won this contest 12 months ago, but he may be opposable based on his latest outing at Haydock and a chance is taken on fellow UK raider SAM MAXIMUS. James Horton’s colt was last seen winning a Listed contest at Newmarket last month and, if the first-time visor ekes out even more improvement, he looks capable of backing that performance up. Just Beautiful was below-par at Leopardstown on her reappearance, but she should fare better on this occasion.

VERDICT

2021 William Hill Ireland Renaissance Stakes Winner ART POWER heads the field for the 2022 renewal of the race Although winless since the race last year, he has won on both previous starts in Ireland and comes here with the highest official rating. With a small but select field he is the one to beat.
RACE FOUR 27

THEWELDPARKSTAKES

The last pattern race for two-year-old fillies in the Irish calendar, this race commemorates Dermot Weld’s parents Charlie and Marguerite and it has been run at the Curragh since 1991. This Group 3 is gaining prominence as a key race for late blooming two-year-olds, with the seven furlongs of the Curragh a fine litmus test for Classic contenders and top class prospects in the making.

A quick look down the roll of honour will highlight two names Mick Kinane and John Oxx.

The former won this race seven times in the saddle, the first being Lone Bidder in 1980 and the last Eva’s Request in 2007.

John Oxx gave Mick one of his wins with Arch Swing in 2006, and landed the race in 1994 with the classy mare Ridgewood Pearl under Johnny Murtagh, before Christy Roche took over in the saddle to land a memorable victory in the 1995 1,000 Guineas.

In recent years, Coolmore have emerged as a dominating force, with a huge battalion of top-class two-year-olds. David Wachman trained Chintz and Chrysanthemum to win the race in 2008 and 2010 for Seamie Heffernan and Wayne Lordan respectively, and Aidan O’Brien has a fine record in this too.

The master of Ballydoyle won this with Magical Dream in 2012, Qualify in 2014 and Coolmore in 2015, all ridden by Joseph O’Brien.

Ryan Moore was in the saddle for subsequent English 1,000 Guineas winner Hermosa’s success in 2018 (the race took place at Naas),

John Oxx Hermosa
28 40YEARSOF

before jockey-turned-trainer

Joseph O’Brien landed the race in 2019 with New York Girl under a fine ride by talented young rider Shane Crosse.

The much missed Pat Smullen guided Eziyra to victory in 2016 for race sponsor Dermot Weld which must not be forgotten about too, while the Noel Meade-trained Elysium gave Billy Lee a breakthrough success in this Group 3 contest in 2020.

Last year’s renewal proved to be a wide-open affair, with Concert Hall picking up the prize late home. She appreciated the good clip set and stayed on very strongly up the hill to win by a length with Seamie Heffernan doing the steering. She continued to go from strength to strength as one of the leading three year old fillies this year, running well in both the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas and Cazoo Oaks at Epsom.

Charlie Weld was one of the most respected and successful dual purpose trainers of his generation. He was responsible for approximately 1000 winners during his training career which spanned 1950, 1960 and the early 1970s. Initially based close to the Phoenix Park, he later moved to Rosewell House on the Curragh where he enjoyed the majority of his success. The victory of Decies in the National Produce Stakes was one of his most notable flat wins but the performances of the ultra-consistent Farney Fox deserves special mention. The versatile performer not only was ridden to victory in the 1960 Irish Lincoln by TP Burns, but leading jump jockey Paddy Powell also rode the son of Archive into second place in the Champion Hurdle Always a trainer with great foresight and ambition, he sent Mrs M Donnelly’s stable star to compete in the Washington DC International race and in so doing became the first Irish trainer to have a runner in what was then the world’s greatest international race.

Other top class flat performers included 1963 Phoenix Stakes winner Right Strath and Wily Trout, who won the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot. Charlie also enjoyed tremendous success with some of his National Hunt performers These included 1959 Galway Plate winner Highfield Lad and the brilliant young chaser Coniston, who won both the Champion novice chases at Punchestown and Fairyhouse. He was ridden both times by Joe Malone Galway Hurdle winner Ticonderoga was another notable winner as he also landed the Galway Amateur Handicap for Charlie’s 15-year-old son Dermot!

30 CHARLIE WELD

Originally from Kilsheelan in CountyTipperary, her love of horses was engendered quite early in her life and she started to ride from the age of 3 and experienced her first hunt at the age of 10 with the Waterford Hunt. Her father was a dairy farmer but also kept and trained horses. She went to school in the Ursuline Convent in Waterford and during holidays competed in showjumping at various shows.

After school she worked for the Department of Agriculture in Naas. During the war years, she regularly won point-to-points with the Naas harriers It is during this time she met Charlie Weld at a meet with the Kildare Hounds. After their marriage they moved to England when Charlie took out a trainers licence

After a few years, they returned to Ireland and based themselves close to the Phoenix Park during the 1950s They subsequently moved to the Curragh to be based at Rosewell House and Charlie’s career went from strength to strength with his wife playing a very important role in that success.

Breeding horses was a huge interest to her Initially she owned Glenvale Stud in Carrick on Suir and following its sale, she purchased Pipers Hill Stud in Naas. She later moved to Springbank close to the Curragh where she bred many top class performers including Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow and Nightime winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas She resided at Springbank until her death at the age of 98 in 2014

CURRAGH COMMENT

Runner-up behind next year’s Derby favourite in the Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown, CAROLINE STREET sets a lofty standard in this contest and the drop in trip looks another positive for the daughter of No Nay Never. Having won five of the last 10 renewals of this contest, Aidan O’Brien’s fillies must be respected, especially Maybe Just Maybe, who was ahead of the selection here last month and performed creditably in the Debutante Stakes before that as well. The progressive Pandora Lovegood and Keep In Touch are others to consider.

IRISHCESAREWITCH

The name “Cesarewitch” originates from the anglicised version of Tsesarevich, which is the title of the heir to the throne in Imperial Russia. The race is named in honour of Tsesarevich Alexander (later Tsar Alexander II) who attended the inaugural race in 1839 at Newmarket, England.

The Cesarewitch makes for a thrilling event, as it sports a huge field of runners, with the maximum number of starters allowed on track an impressive 30 and is now now the most valuable handicap to be run in Europe this year.

Making it one of the most entertaining races of the year. It’s open to horses aged three years old and upwards and raced over a marathon two miles, which makes it a true stamina test, appealing to Dual-code trainers as many of their horses are trained for the longer distances.

This race has been won by all of racing’s big names, but one name stands out in particular. Willie Mullins enhanced his fine record in the contest with victory in 2019, training Royal Illusion to a demolition eight length win under Joey Sheridan.

The master of Closutton has won this race a remarkable number of time, including consecutive renewals in 2015 and 2016 with Digeanta and Laws Of Spin respectively.

A young Donnacha O’Brien, then claiming seven pounds in the saddle, guided home El Salvador to victory in 2014 for his father Aidan who saddles Wordsworth and bottom weight Waterville today.

Joseph O’Brien also has a strrong hand to play with Cleveland, Okita Soushi, Master Of Reality, Ruling, Mighty Blue, Merroir, Inuit and Powerful Aggietraining eight of the 30 runners. Reflecting on winners in the last ten years, we’ve seen horses as big as 25/1 win the race (El Salvador in 2014 and Lord Erskine in 2017), while a big race of this nature can be primed for a gamble on a favourite, with Minsk in 2011 and Voleuse De Coeurs both obliging as market leaders for John Oxx and Dermot Weld respectively. We’ve seen promising young riders land this race too with claiming jockeys Sam James, Leigh Roche, Donnacha O’Brien and Joey Sheridan all winning as an apprentice.

JOEKEELING

FRIENDSOFTHECURRAGH

The Irish Cesarewitch is the most valuable handicap run in Europe this year thanks to the support of the Friends of the Curragh which is the brainchild of former Horse Racing Ireland Chairman Joe Keeling who, together with a group of like-minded individuals and companies, including Grant Thornton, has agreed to support this historic Curragh handicap for at least the next three years.

Joe has a lifelong association with horse racing, having started attending the Fairyhouse Easter meeting over sixty years ago. He was a Director at Fairyhouse Racecourse in the 1990’s and 2000’s, while Keelings has been a valued sponsor to Irish racing, supporting the Keelings Strawberry Hurdle on Easter Monday at Fairyhouse for several years.

Between 2013 and 2018, Joe served as Chairman of Horse Racing Ireland with the redevel opment of the Curragh Racecourse and improving the return to owners in Irish racing being two key priorities.

Joe’s family’s first racehorse was Irish Firs owned by his wife Mary, which was bred by Mary’s father Willie Byrne, who was a trainer based at the Phoenix Park. Joe won his first race as an owner in 1982 and has enjoyed success as an owner at Cheltenham. The late Mick O’Toole trained Irish Firs one of fifteen winners in total which he trained for Joe, the most successful of which was Fourth of July. Irish Firs was also trained and ridden to success in a point to point in 1986 by Joe’s son William.

Other successful horses include Alone He Stands, trained by Joe’s good friend John Hayden, and Blueberry Boy trained by Paul Stafford which won a Grade 2 race at Punchestown. Market Lass, trained by Jessica Harrington won three races at Fairyhouse including two Grade 3’s while Teach Nua trained by Dermot Weld won two races for Joe at the Galway Festival and Elusive in Paris, trained by Michael Grassick won three races on the flat in 2011 and 2012.

More recently, Joe has enjoyed success at Listed level with the evergreen Texas Rock and with Curragh specialist Verhoyen, both trained by Michael Grassick.

The Curragh Racecourse is extremely grateful to Joe and the Friends of the Curragh for their generous support of the Irish Cesarewitch which it is hoped to develop further in the future. In an interesting link to the past, the 1964 Irish Cesarewitch was won by a horse named Abletai the jockey was J. Murtagh, the owner was R. McIlhagga and the trainer was W.J. Byrne father in law of Joe Keeling.

CURRAGH COMMENT

A typically wide-open renewal of this year’s contest, in which only a tentative vote can be given to HMS SEAHORSE. Paul Nolan’s charge hacked up at this venue in June before finishing a good third over hurdles on his latest outing. The son of Galileo will need more back on the Flat, but he remains open to improvement in this sphere. Similar comments apply to Waterville, who is able to operate from a low weight and looks set to go well, along with Grade 1-winning hurdler Echoes In Rain. Earl Of Tyrone and this year’s Chester Cup hero Cleveland are likely to be in the thick of things, while Okita Soushi, who should improve for the step up in trip, is another to consider.

WIN: HMS SEAHORSE

DANGER: Waterville

VERDICT

A wide open Irish Cesarewitch and with William Hill offering six places in the race on each-way bets a couple of horses at bigger prices may appeal. Echoes In Rain, last seen winning at the Galway Festival, will attract plenty of interest as Willie Mullins & Rachael Blackmore team up once again given they were second over course and distance back in May. However, the vote goes to stablemate LOT OF JOY, fourth in the aforementioned race at Galway on just her first start for the Mullins yard. The handicapper raised her just one pound for that more than credible effort and she is entitled to improve for the

CURRAGH COMMENT

In this fascinating contest the tentative vote goes to HARLEY STREET, who may be able to hit the ground running on his first start. The debutant is well bred and may prove too classy for his rivals. Faded Fantasy shaped better than the bare result suggests when sixth at Cork on his sole start and he can mount a bold bid. Zoffman found only one rival too strong on his latest outing and may follow them home.
