WELCOME TO DAY 2 OF LONGINES IRISH CHAMPIONS WEEKEND

Tattersalls Ireland, the European Breeders Fund, Moyglare Stud and Goffs are long-established sponsors on today’s card and both the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and Group 1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes rank among the best juvenile races that are held anywhere.

ThisWeekend.afternoon’s

From beginning to end, this weekend’s racing is to be savoured. There can be little doubt that the winners we saw at Leopardstown yesterday and those that emerge at the Curragh this afternoon will also be contending for top honours at the highest-profile end of year fixtures in Britain, France, America, Australia and Hong Kong.

racing stands out in that it is the only meeting in Ireland to feature four Group 1 races. The Curragh famously plays host to all five Classic races and this afternoon’s Comer Group International Irish St Leger is the final Classic of the season. The race gives some of the leading stayers in Europe their chance to shine on one of the world’s best racecourses.

It’s my pleasure to welcome you to the Curragh for the second day of Longines Irish Champions

Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive

We are very grateful to today’s race sponsors - the Irish European Breeders Fund, Moyglare Stud Farm, Go s Bloodstock Sales, Comer Group International, Al Basti Equiworld Dubai and Tattersalls Ireland as well as the Longines for their support of today’s programme.

I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all today for the second day of Longines Irish Champions Weekend – one of the highlights of the season here at the Curragh. After two years of Covid restrictions, we are very much enjoying being able to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh and I hope that you have a good day.

We have made changes to our o ering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. Free seating is also available for racegoers at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong. There is plenty of entertainment throughout the enclosures today, including the Moyglare Kidzone as well as food and beverage outlets. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Newbridge Gospel Choir, the Artane Band and up and coming artist Allie Sherlock. We are also grateful to Treo Eile for collaborating on a Parade of Champions which will take place in the parade ring between the first three Inraces.2022, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings in total - an increase of two over last year - and we have an exciting programme of quality flat racing on o er throughout the year.

I would like to thank all owners with runners here today also - we hope your experience is a good one and we thank you for your support. Finally, as we look forward to today’s racing, the thoughts of everybody here at the Curragh and indeed the entire racing community are with the de Bromhead family who su ered an unimaginable tragedy with the death of Jack in a tragic racing accident last week. Words are wholly inadequate in this situation, but you are foremost in everybody’s thoughts, and we are here to support you in any way we can.

e Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a su cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. e principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). e ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were con rmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

e Curragh Racecourse extends its sympathies to all our friends and colleagues in British racing on the passing of their Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. It truly marks the end of an era.

e bonds between British and Irish racing are extremely strong and long lasting as evidenced by the level of British participation on today’s card and by the daily interactions at all levels of our industry.

Queen Elizabeth II was a most passionate supporter of horse racing both as an owner and breeder and in her capacity as patron of the Jockey Club and the oroughbred Breeders Association as well as gurehead of Ascot Racecourse. Horses formed a central part of her historic visit to Ireland in 2011, including a memorable morning at the Irish National Stud, while some of her great successes on the racetrack were with Irish bred horses.

RICHARD KINGSCOTE (10 wins from 50 rides, 20%) rides LAKOTA SIOUX (3.00), HAMISH (4.10). BEN CURTIS (7 wins from 48 rides, 15%) rides EBRO RIVER (2.25).

2018 saw the son of Sea The Stars in the winner’s enclosure 3 times which included the Cork Derby and the back-to-back ‘Ragusa’ Premier Handicap. He also was placed in the Ebor at York for local owners Kathleen Whelan and Suzanne Fahey. A gallant performance saw Sea The Lion beaten by a neck when returning to contest the ‘Ragusa’ Premier Handicap for a third time in 2019. His last race was in August 2020 and he joined Fiona Wentges in March 2022 to commence a showing career.

Sea The Lion won his maiden here at the Curragh as a 3-year-old, when trained by Michael Halford for owner/breeder John Connaughton. A break as a result of an injury did not hinder his enthusiasm for racing, returning to the track in 2017 with placings and two wins for Jarlath Fahey – which included the ‘Ragusa’ Premier Handicap, here at the Curragh.

Alfredo Arcano’s last race was in June of 2021 and through Treo Eile, he started his retraining for a showing career with Lindsay Carthy in April2022.Inassociation

Royal Diamond was bred by Moyglare Stud Farm Ltd and sold at the 2007 Goffs Million yearling sale for €70,000 to Sir Mark Prescot. He was a 4-time winner for the Newmarket handler and was placed over hurdles for John Joe O’Neill, before his journey took him to Tommy Carmody on the Curragh in March 2012. That season he was placed in the Ulster Derby and the Ebor at York. He rounded it off by winning the Gr1 Irish St Leger here at the Curragh.

11yo Sire: Sea The Stars (IRE) Dam: Ramona (GB)

While Alfredo Arcano won a handicap here at the Curragh, the David Marnane trained gelding became better known as an all-weather specialist. The now 8-year-old, won or was placed 18 times from his 32 runs at Dundalk, with his best rating being 105. He has won over 5, 6 and 7 furlongs and accumulated over €152,000 for owners Laurence O’Kane and Melanie Marnane.

In August 2015, Willie Mullins called him the ‘horse of a generation’ when announcing his retirement as an 11-year-old. Fortunately for his adoring fans, Hurricane Fly returned to the Irish National Stud to join the Living Legends team in their retirement.

He won and was placed over hurdles before being caught on the line in his opening outings over fences. A win at Gowran Park was quickly followed by winning the Hugh McMahon Memorial Novice Chase Gr3, at Limerick. General Principle got his first taste of the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse when finishing 5th in 2017, but came out twelve months later to win this 3m 5f contest by a head from GeneralIsleofhopendreams.Principlelast raced in November 2020. The gelding is now with Seanin Mahon who looked after him when in training and the combination won the Racehorse to Riding Horse class at this year’s Dublin Horse Show.

A win and placing over hurdles in France as a 4-year-old was the starting point for Douvan, before continuing his career with Willie Mullins from November 2014. This was a racing career that saw Douvan unbeaten from his first run for the Closutton trainer on 22 November 2014 to February 2017. Incorporating 14 wins over hurdles and fences, this feat included eight Grade 1 races and three Grade 2 races. Douvan was cheered into the Cheltenham winner’s enclosure for the 2015 Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Gr1 and the 2016 Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase Gr1, with a win also at Aintree in the Doom Bar Maghull Novice Chase Gr1 in 2016. On home soil, Douvan added Grade 1 wins in the Champion Novice Hurdle and Ryanair Novice Chase in Punchestown, while at Leopardstown his name is on the Racing Post Novice Chase, the Arkle Novice Chase and the Paddy Power Chase.

Owner: Mrs S Ricci Breeder: S A R L Haras De La Faisanderie

In March 2008 he was returned in training with Willie Mullins, and commenced a career that would see the son of Montjeu win 24 of his 32 races over hurdles –astonishingly 22 of these wins were at Grade One level. He holds the world record for the most Grade 1 victories. He made the Irish Champion Hurdle his own, winning it 5 times from 2011 to 2015. In 2011 and 2013 Hurricane Fly and Ruby Walsh romped up the Cheltenham hill to win the Champion Hurdle and, in both years, he returned to the Punchestown Festival to win the Rabobank Champion Hurdle, a race he won in total 4 times.

Douvan last raced in November 2019 and he is presently enjoying a showing career with Clare Ricketts in Carlow. He stood 4th in the Racehorse to Riding Horse class at this year’s Dublin Horse Show.

ONE FOR ARTHUR

13yo Sire: Milan (GB) Dam: Nonnetia (FR)

Owner: Gigginstown House Stud

Trainer: Gordon Elliott

After winning a hurdle race for Nigel Hawkes, Tiger Roll joined Gordon Elliott in January 2014. He won four times over hurdles which included the Triumph Hurdle Gr 1 at Cheltenham, but it was not until he took to fences that he came into his own. Tiger Roll won two novice chases before winning the 2016 Munster National and Lisa O’Neill partnered him to win the 2017 Cheltenham National Hunt Challenge Cup Amateur Riders’ Novices’ Chase Gr2.

Breeder: G O’Brien

TIGER ROLL

One For Arthur made a winning debut over fences for trainer Lucinda Russell and in total won 4 chases. 2017 saw the gelding win the Betfred Classic Handicap Chase Gr3 as a prep race for the Grand National. April 8th, 2017 saw One For Arthur overtake the favourite approaching the final obstacle and staying on up the run-in to win the Randox Health Grand National by four and a half lengths from Cause of Causes. A re-visit to Aintree for the iconic race in 2019, resulted in a gallant 6th to Tiger Roll.

The little bay won the hearts of the public when he won back-to-back Randox Health Grand Nationals at Aintree in 2018 and 2019 under Davy Russell. He had the ability to adapt to different obstacles and he put his stamp on the Cheltenham Cross Country race, by winning it three times in 2018, 2019 and 2021 and placed second twice, once in 2020 and on his final outing in March 2022. This summer Tiger Roll’s adaptability came to the fore again as the gelding and Ted O’Leary won in the show ring and stood third in the Racehorse to Riding Horse class at the Dublin Horse Show.

Like many top chasers, One For Arthur won and was placed in the point-to-point field. He had three wins in his hurdling career and was only once out of the placings in seven runs over the smaller obstacles.

One For Arthur’s last race was in February 2020 and he returned to his breeder John Dwan in May 2022 for his daughter Aisling to ride. The partnership has been successful in showing classes and partake in Pony Club activities.

Two of today’s Group 1 races, the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Flying Five Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes, are part of the ‘Win and You’re In’ series for the Breeders’ Cup, where the winner automatically gains entry to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf respectively.

BREEDERS’ CUP CONNECTION

Looking further back, Daahyeh, who was second in 2019 to Love, ran at Santa Anita, finishing a good second under William Buick and landing valuable black type. Albigna, sixth in the Moyglare, improved to fourthfinish behind Daahyeh.

Although winning soundly in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, Jessica Harrington opted out of sending Discoveries to Del Mar and kept her unraced for the rest of the season.

In 2015, Alice Springs finished a length and a quarter third behind the talented Minding and Ballydoyle in the Moyglare, before being denied a follow up win at the Breeders’ Cup, going down by three quarters of a length at Keeneland to the Mark Casse-trained Catch A InGlimpse.recent times, September finished third in both the Moyglare and the equivalent race at Del Mar, and the search for a filly capable of winning both races goes on.

GLASS SLIPPERS (GB)

Bred by: Bearstone Stud Limited Ridden by: Tom Eaves

With the benefits of the ‘Win and You’re In’ series, connections of Glass Slippers headed to Keeneland for a tilt at the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Their star mare delivered in fine style, again under Eaves, with the pair seeing off a field of extremely talented American sprinters to win by half a length and land a memorable victory.

Record: 21 runs - 7 wins - 7 places

Career earnings: £962,666

Owned by: Bearstone Stud Limited Trained by: Kevin Ryan

Following another gutsy display in the 2021 renewal of the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Flying Five Stakes, to fininsh a close third, the fabulous mare tried her luck again overseas but was no match for the new kid on the block Golden Pal, with A Case Of You finishing a good fifth, supporting the form of the famous race here.

Until 2020, the Flying Five hadn’t yielded competitors in it’s American counterpart. That all changed with the arrival of Glass Slippers. A smart mare, she landed a breakthrough Group 1 win in the Prix de l’Abbaye in October 2019 before taking in top races en route to her Flying Five win in 2020. She was well-ridden under Tom Eaves, and the pair held off Ryan Moore and Miss Amulet back in second.

Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive The Curragh Racing - healyracing.ie

To Jack’s parents Henry and Heather, his sisters Mia and Georgia and his wide circle of family and friends, we extend our heartfelt sympathies and prayers.

Though young in years, Jack had already created a positive impression and was making a name for himself as a rider on the pony racing circuit. Few who saw his lovely interview with Brian Gleeson at Punchestown in April will ever forget it.

CURRAGH COMMENT

ONERACE 32

Retired to stud at a fee of 400 guineas, Bold Lad made a “spectacular” start to his breeding career, siring the 1000 Guineas winner Waterloo in his first crop of foals. He also sired the leading sprinters Boldboy and Never So Bold, the Richmond Stakes winner Persian Bold (sire of Kooyonga) and Ballad Rock, the sire of Chief Singer.

GORDON BENNETT has been something of a revelation this summer and going by the way he saw off his rivals over C&D last month, there is likely to be plenty more improvement forthcoming. Richard Brabazon’s charge is narrowly preferred to Big Gossey, who produced a shock when winning this last year and arrives in far better form this time around. A determined winner of the Scurry here in July, Mr Wagyu is likely to be thereabouts, along with fellow English raider Gulliver. No More Porter, Coumshingaun and Ice Cold In Alex are just three others to consider.

Bold Lad began his three-year-old campaign with a win in the Tetrarch Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland. Sent to England, he was the 100/30 joint-favorite with Royal Palace going in to the Classic 2,000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket. He finished unplaced behind Royal Palace and Taj Dewan, having been denied a clear run in the closing stages. Bold Lad then started favourite for the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but was beaten three-quarters of a length by the Irish-trained four-year-old Bluerullah. In the last race of his career, ran third to Reform in Ascot’s St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

THE DIRECTORS AND MANAGEMENT OF THE CURRAGH RACECOURSE WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE FOLLOWING SPONSORS TODAY:

The first race today honours the great Bold Lad. Trained by Paddy Prendergast, Bold Lad began his career in 1966 by winning the Youngsters Stakes in Ireland and was then sent to Royal Ascot to contest the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in which he defeated a field which included Royal Palace. He won the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster defeating the previously unbeaten Ribocco, after which Prendergast described him as the best two-year-old he had ever trained, including Windy City. In September he won the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. In the Free Handicap, a ranking of the season’s best juveniles, he was rated three pounds clear of runner-up Royal Palace giving him Champion honors in Ireland and England.

1962 - 2022

Plenty of kisses and bubbles alongside these victories, but also deep recognition that without all the teams of stud and stable staff, jockeys, work riders, feed men, farriers, night men, office staff, yard staff, box drivers and travelling grooms, plus of course a few trainers and the odd vet or two, none of this would be possible. Too many to name individually in too many places, but you all know who you are and what your contribution is and we thank you, one and all. Eva’s sponsorship of the Curragh Grooms canteen, plus the odd coffee and donut run, is just a drop in the ocean of gratitude. Your work and your love and care of these sometimes, crazy minded thoroughbreds is what produces the results. Much of it behind the scenes, you are the silent warriors, but Eva, her children and all at Moyglare wanted you all to know that we recognise and respect what you do, and we thank you all.

Wow, what a year… amazing that we achieved 60 years at all, but no planning could have produced a more apt 60th anniversary year for Moyglare Stud than this year has proved. From Gulfstream Park in January, to the Curragh, Leopardstown, Navan and Chester in May, to Ascot and Goodwood in June and July and Deauville in August, this 60th year of Moylgare Stud has just kept on rolling… and we are not done yet!

HIGHFIELD PRINCESS put in a career-best when readily scoring in the Nunthorpe over 5f at York last month and that followed a defeat of the subsequent Sprint Cup winner Minzaal in the Prix Maurice de Gheest. This in-form and progressive mare clearly sets the form standard and is hard to oppose. That said, A Case Of You is capable of giving her plenty to think about if reproducing the form that saw him also win a pair of Group 1 contests in the last 12 months. Others to note are Romantic Proposal, Ladies Church and Mooneista.

Ridden differently to when third in the Debutante Stakes, she turned around the form with the smart Agartha to score impressively by half a length.

THE O’BRIENS AND THE MOYGLARE STUD STAKES

50

The Moyglare Stud Stakes is a race for the top two-year-old fillies and like many races in Ireland, it has been dominated by the O`Brien family. Aidan has won the contest a record nine times, most recently in 2019 with superstar Love, whilst his sons Joseph and Donnacha have both won the contest as both trainer and jockey; it is a race they like to keep in the family.

Donnacha has claimed the prize as a jockey for both his brother Joseph and dad Aidan in 2016 and 2017 respectively before landing the spoils just three years later as a trainer with Shale, an incredibly impressive feat in just his first year with a license. His win aboard Intricately in 2016 was his first ever Group 1 success and was a fantastic story for all the O`Brien family; with the two brothers pairing up for a horse that was bred by their mother, Anne-Marie. This race is another of the Breeders Cup Challenge Series where the winners gains entry to the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf race and Donnacha`s second victor, Happily, has been one of only two to attempt the double so far. After her very close victory over Magical in this contest, she landed a Group 1 in Chantilly in convincing fashion leading to her being sent off as 9/4F out in Del Mar. It was the quickest ground she had ever encountered however, and it took its effect as she finished last of the fourteen runners that day.

Perhaps the two most successful Ballydoyle heroines however have been those in which the family didn’t team up, in the shape of Minding in 2015 and Love in 2019. Minding cruised to victory in this contest under Seamie Heffernan despite going into the race as apparent stable second string behind a strong favourite ridden by Joseph. She dispelled any thoughts of her playing second fiddle when she crossed the line in front before embarking on a dazzling career which

would see her land a further six Group 1 contests at two and three years old. The Galileo filly would go on to complete the 1000 Guineas and Oaks double as well as win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes against the best of the best of any sex or age to cement herself at the very top. Minding hasn’t been the only O`Brien winner of the contest to go on to do the Classic double though, and more recently Love also completed the feat. She landed the Moyglare Stud Stakes under Ryan Moore to deny Roger Varian-trained favourite Daahyeh from taking the prize back to Britain. Love would then follow on to win three straight Group 1s as a three-year-old in dominant fashion and have one of the most impressive seasons from a three-year-old filly we have seen in recent memory. She completed the Guineas and Oaks double by four and nine lengths respectively before landing the hattrick with a five-length victory in the Yorkshire Oaks. No other filly could live with her that season and she was completely and utterly dominant as she became a fan favourite across the racing world.

Fifty years – five decades – of continual, unbroken and increasingly enthusiastic sponsorship of one of the world’s most influential juvenile fillies’ races. An occasion to celebrate, applaud, shout to the sky THANK YOU to the Haefner family for this enduring legacy. Established by Moyglare Stud founder Walter Haefner in 1973, the stewardship of this famous race passed to his daughter Eva-Maria well over a decade ago, as did his commitment to Irish racing.

of Celebratingthe YEARS

Consistency and quality have long been the mark of the Moyglare Stud Stakes, now well established as a pre-eminent source of Champion race fillies and future leading broodmares. The roll of honour stretches through the years from Arctique Royale, Habibti, Park Appeal, Chimes of Freedom, Flamenco Wave, Edabiya, Sequoyah to Chelsea Rose and in the recent decade Misty For Me, Maybe and Sky Lantern, top race fillies, already the dams of a Guineas winner, July Cup winner and G1 winning fillies. These are the tap root for the thoroughbred dynasties so vital for the breed worldwide, a veritable equine hall of fame resulting from a single race – and a single dream.

It’s difficult to oppose the unbeaten MEDITATE, who landed the Debutante Stakes last month, taking her career record to 4-4. The daughter of No Nay Never is unlikely to have hit her ceiling yet and is expected to make her mark at the highest level. Tahiyra was impressive when winning at Galway on her racecourse bow and she commands the utmost respect, along with Thornbrook. NATIVE TRAIL 2021 GOFFS VINCENT O’BRIEN NATIONAL STAKES WINNER

An unbeaten two-year-old, Native Trail extended Charlie Appleby’s charge in this race with a phenomenaldisplay against the well-fancied Point Lonsdale. Favourite for both 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Curragh this season, he prevailed with ease here, to add a Classic to his impressive achievements

THE GOFFS VINCENT O’BRIEN NATIONAL STAKES (GROUP 1)

From humble beginnings in Co. Cork, O’Brien quickly developed into the most dominant National Hunt trainer of his era. To name but a few, he saddled Cottage Rake to win three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups (1948-50), Hatton’s Grace to win three consecutive Champion Hurdles (1949-51) and perhaps most remarkably, he trained the winner of the Aintree Grand National in three consecutive years with three different horses (1953-55). Hatton’s Grace was sold at Goffs as were O’Brien’s 1955 Grand National winner Quare Times and 1953 Gold Cup winner Knock Hard. However, it wasn’t until Vincent bought and built up a new training base at Ballydoyle in Co. Tipperary and turned his hand to training Flat horses that his influence became truly worldwide. Having partnered with John Magnier, the owner of Coolmore Stud and a multitude of prominent racehorse owners, most notably Robert Sangster, O’Brien helped to change the world of thoroughbred breeding by strongly supporting the progeny of a diminutive Canadian-based stallion called Northern Dancer. That proved to be inspired, as Northern Dancer would go on to establish himself as one of the most influential sires of all time and Vincent trained such talented and influential sons of his such as Nijinsky, Be My Guest, The Minstrel, Sadler’s Wells and El Gran Senor.

Of the dozens of Group 1 races Vincent won throughout his career, the Group 1 he won on more occasions than any other was the National Stakes at the Curragh. Often targeting his best two-year-old at it, he saddled the winner of it on no less than 15 occasions, with perhaps his most memorable winners of the race being the legendary Sir Ivor (1967) and El Gran Senor (1983).

HONOURING A TRUE LEGEND OF THE TURF

Lester Piggott aboard Nijinsky

Nijinsky

The big-race wins that O’Brien enjoyed on Flat are too numerous to list in entirety, but there are many highlights, with his record in Classics being particularly noteworthy. In total, O’Brien saddled 27 Irish Classic winners including six in the Irish Derby, as well as 16 British Classics including six Epsom Derby winners - including Larkspur who was purchased at Goffs.

If ever a man deserved to have a Group One race named in his honour, Vincent O’Brien does.

Thus, it is fitting that the National Stakes should nowadays be known as The Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes in recognition of the remarkable contribution that Vincent O’Brien made to making Ireland the leading thoroughbred nation in the world. Hopefully today’s renewal will live up to the high standard that Vincent helped to set in the race during the course of his remarkable career.

At the inaugural yearling sales held at the new Goffs complex in Kill in 1975, a son of Northern Dancer became Europe’s highest priced yearling of all time. The colt, Lot 419 who was offered by Moyglare Stud with a nomination for the National Stakes at the Curragh, was purchased by Vincent O’Brien for 127,000gns. The yearling was named Be My Guest and went on to become European Champion Sire in 1982.

THE GOFFS VINCENT O’BRIEN NATIONAL STAKES

The most impressive performance in recent years in this contest, and possibly ever, was that of Pinatubo for Charlie Appleby and the Godolphin team in 2019. One of the most exciting two-year-olds we have ever seen, Pinatubo made it five wins a row as he absolutely smashed the field by a romping nine lengths in an utterly dominant performance. It was impressive on the clock also, faster than every renewal since 1976 bar Hawk Wing in 2001. He now stands at Dalham Hall Stud and joins the long list of stallions to have emerged from this race, hoping to be just as successful with his first book of mares covered in 2021.

Often one of the strongest two-year-old races of the season that attracts the top-class freshman from both Britain and Ireland, this race has a habit of turning out superstars. From Churchill to Dawn Approach to Gleneagles it is a race that is normally followed by three-year-old success and often a lucrative stallion career. The race is now aptly named after the leading trainer in the contest, the great Vincent O`Brien who won this 15 times and even won it four times in a row at the peak of his powers.

Aidan O`Brien will be looking to keep the trophy in Ireland and although having won this race three years in a row between 2014 and 2016, he hasn’t collected the prize since. The last horse to win the contest for the Ballydoyle trainer was Churchill, who was crowned Champion two-year-old colt in Europe that year. He had the smart Mehmas in second that day and went on to be a dual Guineas winner at three. Aidan will be hoping he can find another as talented as Churchill this year and one that can go on to be just as successful. The last member of the O`Brien family to win the race was Joseph with his Thunder Moon who showed an electric turn of foot to land the spoils in 2020.

63

The formidable team of Charlie Appleby, William Buick and Godolphin have swung things in their favour in recent years, at the chief expense of the O`Brien family, winning three of the last four renewals. This included last year`s impressive winner Native Trail, who beat the strong Ballydoyle favourite Point Lonsdale by over three lengths in stylish fashion. Native Trail tracked the leaders before being asked to quicken by William Buick, and that he did as he galloped away from them impressively when the pressure was applied. This was officially the best-rated two-year-old performance of the season and Native Trail was rated the highest of all two-year-olds by the end of the season with a rating of 122, seven pounds clear of anything else. He followed that up this year with a Craven Stakes and Irish 2000 Guineas win and it is clear to see this race attracts the top juveniles in the country.

Henry Beeby Chief Executive Goffs accompanied by Eimear Mulhern Executive Chairman Goffs will present trophies to the winning owner, trainer and jockey and €500 to the groom in charge of the horse judged to be best turned out. A member of the O’Brien Family will present the Vincent O’Brien Perpetual Trophy to the winning owner. Rathbride

This contest looks all about AESOP’S FABLES, who had both Hans Andersen (second) and Proud And Regal (third) behind when readily winning the Group 2 Futurity Stakes over C&D last month. That was a mightily impressive display and with the potential to improve again, he will take an awful lot of beating. Hans Andersen could be the one to chase him home once more, although Marbaan will likely be ridden cold and warrants respect following his stylish win in the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

IRISH2021SONNYBOYLISTONCOMERGROUPINTERNATIONALSTLEGERWINNER

Sonnyboyliston had improved leaps and bounds last season, really fulfilling his potential since stepping up to this trip. He relished the quick pace set and proved he is a rock-solid operator over this trip, to stay on strongly to fend off the late challenge of Twilight Payment.

Sonnyboyliston is by Coolmore`s Irish 2000 Guineas winner Power (Oasis Dream) out of a Dylan Thomas mare. His stamina and toughness come from the mare`s side as she herself was a winner over one mile and seven furlongs while her sire, Dylan Thomas, was a l`Arc de Triomphe winner. He was picked up for just €26,000 as a yearling by Liam Clarke for his racing club, and since then has more than paid his way. On his return to Ireland in the racing club’s home county of Kildare, Sonnyboyliston gave his owners their best day yet, as he landed the Irish Classic; whilst in the process giving Jonny Murtagh his finest day as a trainer to also land his first Classic win. The further they went in the Irish St Leger the better he looked, a horse packed with stamina, toughness and grit. He did enough to hold of the challenge 2020 Melbourne Cup winner Twilight Payment in behind, staying on all the way through the line. Jonny Murtagh won this race as a jockey aboard Jukebox but had to share the honours in a dead heat, so what a felling to get his hands on the trophy now as a trainer. Young jockey Ben Coen was just 19 years young and gave the four-year-old a determined ride to show as much fortitude in the saddle as the horse he was riding. Search for a Song was looking for a hattrick in the race for Dermot Weld but could only muster sixth place, whilst birthday boy Colin Keane seemed to go too hard in front on Ballydoyle`s Amhran Na Bhfiann.

The Kildare Racing Club`s star stayer has since travelled to Saudi Arabia where he finished a solid second in The Longines Red Sea Turf Handicap which seen him notch up £370,000 in prize money from that one effort alone. The horse that cost €26,000 has now amassed earnings in excess of £1,000,000, a figure probably not even in the wildest of dreams for the small racing club`s members when they purchased the horse.

71

Following his gutsy win in the Ebor handicap at York just three weeks earlier, Sonnyboyliston came to the Curragh hoping to bring Group 1 Classic success for the local syndicate, Kildare Racing Club. The horse was bought by Liam Clarke who runs the club without a huge budget that some may perceive is necessary to compete in the world of flat racing.

It’s difficult to look past KYPRIOS, who is the top stayer around at the moment. This versatile colt backed up his gritty Ascot Gold Cup success when winning the Goodwood Cup, seeing off the likes of Stradivarius and Trueshan in the process, and he will have to run some way below par to be turned over here. Raise You readily beat Search For A Song on his distance debut here last month and he could put up most resistance, although English challenger Hamish also warrants plenty of respect.

It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.

Joseph O’Brien boasts a strong hand with his four runners, last year’s winner Max Mayhem, Irish Cambridgeshire runner-up Good Heavens, Amortentia and POINT GELLIBRAND all commanding plenty of respect. The vote, however, goes to the last-named following a decent effort behind Luxembourg in the Royal Whip here last month, and the son of Camelot is open to further improvement on his handicap debut. Good Heavens was just denied on his latest outing here and he has to enter calculations, while others worth a place on the shortlist include Flying Dolphin and Saltonstall.
