I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all here today for the first day of our Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby weekend – the highlight of the season here at the Curragh. After two years of Covid restrictions, we are very much enjoying being able to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh and I hope that you have a good evening. We have made changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. Free seating is also available at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong. After racing tonight, we welcome Qween, Europe’s most authentic Queen tribute band, who will play in the Parade Ring Plaza. In 2022, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings an increase of two over last year - and we have an exciting programme of quality flat racing on offer throughout the year. The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). CURRAGH COMMENT A fascinating contest which, as usual, features most of the top yards and the market should provide some significant clues as to the chances of those hitting the track for the first time. Ballydoyle newcomer St Kitts holds an entry in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes and may hold the edge over stablemate Victoria Road, despite the latter looking likely to step up from his debut fourth at Roscommon last month. However, the most appealing candidate is SPIRIT GENIE, who posted strong form when runner-up behind the useful Pearling Path on his debut at Fairyhouse and should have even more to offer. The well-bred Yosemite Valley and Ger Lyon’s filly Slan Abhaile, both debutants, are others to note.

The leading jockey will receive €1,000 to donate to a charity of their choice, plus a free ﬁve-year Racing TV subscription, while the leading trainer will also receive a free ﬁve-year subscription along with a celebratory breakfast for their staff. THE COMER GROUP INTERNATIONAL CURRAGH CUP This race was established in 1987 and reached Group 3 status in 1994 before being promoted to Group 2 status in 2016 as part of the expansion and enhancement of the programme for staying horses in Europe. Its roll of honour includes a host of horses who have gone to achieve notable success both at home and abroad. Vintage Crop (1993), Rekindling (2017) and Twilight Payment (2020) won the race in the same season that they went on to win the Melbourne Cup. The 1987 winner Almaarad went on to win the Cox Plate while Kastoria (2006), Septimus (2008) and Flag Of Honour (2018) all took this race en route to Irish St Leger glory. Twilight Payment who won the race in 2020 was the third Melbourne Cup victor to win the race following the success of Vintage Crop who won the Curragh Cup in 1993 and 1995 and Rekindling who won in 2017. Four horses have won this race twice. Vintage Crop (1993 & 1995), Mkuzi (2004 & 2005), Ernest Hemingway (2013 & 2014) and Twilight Payment (2019 & 2020) all successful in the staying contest, while the talented Daliapour won the 2002 renewal in the twilight of his career. Aidan O’Brien trained four consecutive winners from 2013 to 2016, with Ernest Hemingway responsible for the first two of those, followed by Bondi Beach and Sword Fighter. Joseph O’Brien trained his first winner with Rekindling in 2017, while Twilight Payment is a regular in this race and has won the race the last twice. The first victory in 2019 came when trained by Jim Bolger, but he then moved to Joseph O’Brien and was purchased by Lloyd Williams, he continued the winning thread to win the race last year aged seven. Twilight Payment had a fruitful start to 2020, finishing second at Leopardstown before winning the Vintage Crop Stakes. He

backed that up with a dominating eight length win in this race (ran in June due to a change in schedule), where he was ridden for the first time by Declan McDonogh. He faced six rivals, including stablemate Master Of Reality, up and coming stayr Camphor, a last time out winner in Memorabilis and two horses trained by Luke Comer, Giuseppe Garibaldi and Cypress Creek. Memorablis made the early running from his low draw in stall two and held the lead until three furlongs from home, where the pack started to close. Twilight Payment made his challenge first under McDonogh, who was keen to use his mounts staying prowess. Master Of Reality tried to close under Shane Crosse but it was quickly evident he was no match for the winner on the day, as Twilight Payment continued to draw further and further away to record a smooth win by eight lengths. Capping a 1-2 for Lloyd Williams and Joseph O’Brien, Camphor was next best a further seven lengths behind, with early pace setter Memorabilis back in fourth. Last year’s winner Amhran Na Bhfiann was subject to a brilliant ride by Colin Keane to give Aidan O’Brien yet another win in the race. Colin Keane was quick to make use of his low draw and quickly kicked clear of his rivals. Turning for home he has them well and truly strung out and it became of a matter of keeping the colt up to his work to take victory. Short priced favourite Pondus was held up by Shane Crosse and despite coming through the pack well, he had left himself too much to do and couldn’t reel in the runaway leader. It would have been three wins on the bounce for Lloyd Williams but despite Pondus just falling short, a trip to Melbourne was still very much on the cards. He joined 2020 hero winner Twilight Payment on a trip down under but unfortunately it wasn’t to be for either horse and the prize stayed in Australia.

CURRAGH COMMENT Given that Wordsworth was a beaten favourite for the eighth time in his 12-race career when failing to stay the mammoth trip in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot last week, he appears worth taking on once again. Joseph O’Brien’s former Melbourne Cup runner-up MASTER OF REALITY is preferred following an encouraging comeback when fourth over an inadequate 1m4f at the Curragh (a race-fit Wordsworth third), a run which very much suggested that he would be teed up for a better performance next time. His seemingly revitalised stablemate Gear Up and proven stayer Camorra are also capable of playing leading roles.

THE DNG APPRENTICE DERBY The DNG Apprentice Derby is one of 5 races that are part of the DNG Future Stars Series which sees its finale in October. DNG are based near the Curragh Racecourse in Newbridge in the DNG HQ. Dylan Brown McMonagle who has come up through the ranks as a former pony racing champion jockey, Royal Ascot winning rider Ben Curtis, national hunt Galway Plate winner Mark Enright and then onto other graduate jockeys from the race who have gone onto win the Group 1 races like Ronan Whelan, Shane Foley, Padraig Beggy. A hotly contested event, we’ve seen some promising riders land this event in recent years. Gavin Ryan made it back-to-back wins in the race when coming home in front last year aboard the Jim Bolger-trained Trossachs, repeating the feat of a year earlier when winning the race aboard Dawn Hoofer. Had it not been for Danny Sheehy’s win in 2017 with Zeftan for Adrian Keatley, Gavin Ryan would’ve landed this race for three consecutive years as he finished a gallant second that day. Joseph O’Brien supplied his sister Ana with victory in the 2016 renewal with Arya Tara, with the winning owner none other than their mother in what was a true family affair. The Murtagh family paved the way for familial success in this race,as Johnny saddled Jocular to win under his daughter Caroline in 2015. Ronan Gavin Ryan and Trossachs Whelan gave News At Six a sublime ride to win the 2014 running for Jim Bolger, with then two pound claimer Marc Monaghan guiding Mourani to success in 2013 for John Oxx. Luke McAteer added his name to the roll of honour with a fine ride aboard the free going Beyond Happy. The two had already combined for Group Three glory back in 2020. It gave Jim Bolger his third success in the last five years and added another big race to Luke McAteer’s CV. The further back in time you travel the more stories you find. Cathy Gannon landed the race back in 2003, with Fran Berry, Jamie Spencer and Seamie Heffernan winning the 1999, 1997 and 1995 renewals respectively.

STARS OF THE FUTURE

JOEY SHERIDAN

Joey Sheridan is one of the best apprentice jockeys around and is best known for riding the Anthony Mullins trained Princess Zoe. He’s won a won two group races on the mare, including a group one over in France. Over in Britain he’s had ﬁve rides and returned the victor twice, riding again for Anthony Mullins today he should have a good chance of adding the Apprentice Derby to his résumé.

Jake Coen is an exciting apprentice and already has 15 winners to his name this season. He mostly rides for Joseph O’Brien and last Monday rode a double at Ballinrobe.

He’s certainly making waves in the racing world and has a bright future ahead of him.

CIAN MACREDMOND Cian MacRedmond is a regular rider for Adrian McGuinness. This season Cian has ridden ﬁve winners and partnered Current Option to an eleventh placed ﬁnish at Royal Ascot. Today he rides Bringsty.

DANNY SHEEHY

Danny is an incredibly experienced apprentice, with well over 1000 rides to his name. He’s won on some big days too, notably when guiding home the Eddie Lynam-trained Soffia to victory in the 2018 renewal of the Bold Lad handicap on Irish Champions Weekend. Danny has been an apprentice since 2016 and has rode consistently, notching up 17 winners in 2020. He rides mainly as apprentice for Johnny Mutragh, but has picked up rides for other yards too.

A rider to follow, McMonagle has already notched an impressive strike rate from only three seasons in the saddle. Riding primarily for Joseph O’Brien, McMonagle has already tasted big race success, guiding home Brostaigh to victory in the Prix du Gros-Chene Stakes.

CURRAGH COMMENT The Joseph O’Brien stable can do little wrong at present and they could have a promising stayer on their hands in the shape of MONTY’S WAY. A comfortable winner on his seasonal return at Killarney last month, the four-year-old is open to more improvement and the return to better ground ought to suit. Similar comments apply to easy Down Royal winner Dancila and Kazakdaria, who have yet to run over this trip.
