I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all here today for the second Classic race meeting of 2022. After two years of Covid restrictions, we are very much enjoying the opportunity to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh and I hope you have a most enjoyable day. Thanks to the support of Horse Racing Ireland and our sponsors, we have been able to increase the prizemoney on offer to just under €2.5 million over the three days of the Guineas Festival meeting. We have made some changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our Lilywhites and Derby Bars and the various facilities in Champions Hall. Free seating is also available at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong. We are very grateful to today’s sponsors - Irish EBF, Tally Ho Stud, Tattersalls, William Hill and Lanwades Stud for the support which they have given us. I would like to thank all owners with runners here at the Curragh today - we hope your experience is a good one. We race here again on Wednesday June 1st with another fantastic programme of top-quality racing featuring the Sky Bet Race to the Ebor Premier Handicap, while we are delighted that the evening is part of Junefest and hope to welcome plenty of the local community to the races. I hope you enjoy your day, and we look forward to welcoming you back here at the Curragh many times during the season. Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 10

OLIVIA MARALDA is a half-sister to the Jersey second King Of Hearts as well as the Listed-winning sprinter Evil Spell. The daughter of Kodiac created a big enough impression at the breeze-ups last month for connections to part with 460,000gns to purchase her, and she merits plenty of respect as a result. Tanaiyla hit the crossbar on her debut and she should not be underestimated, while Finsceal Go Deo is another with valid form claims. Never Ending Story is bred to need further than this in time but she cannot be discounted.

CURRAGH COMMENT Marginal preference is for PIRATE JENNY, who could be well treated off a mark of 88 on her seasonal reappearance. The daughter of Exceed And Excel filled the runner-up spot in a maiden at Navan last August, where the first, third and fourth are now rated 95, 94 and 98 respectively. She was sent off 3-1 co-favourite that day suggesting connections were hopeful of a bold showing and, though this is no easy task, she could prove too strong for her rivals. Marsa firmly enters calculations following back-to-back successes at Dundalk over the winter, while the beautifully-bred It’s Snowing drops in trip after a recent pipe-opener at Cork and is another to consider.

THE STORY OF MORNY WING

by Sally Duckett

THE jockey Morny Wing dominated Irish Flat racing from 1917 to 1949, and created records that still stand nearly 100 years later. He won the Irish 1,000 Guineas a record seven times, including the very first two runnings of the fillies’ Classic in 1922 and 1923 aboard Lady Violette and Glenshesk. He holds the record for Irish Classic successes on 23. Wing was not Irish by birth, but he was destined to become a jockey. Born in Doncaster in 1896, Mornington Albert Wing was the son of Walter Wing, a stable lad who became a jockey and a Post Office mail coach driver. Wing Snr named his son after his own racing hero, the then British champion jockey Herbert Mornington Cannon (also known as Morny), who was a champion Flat jockey six times in the 1890s. As was custom Wing Jnr started his racing apprenticeship early – he went to work in Newmarket as a teenager, and he rode his first winner as a 15-year-old in 1911. His first big win came in 1913 in the Autumn Cup, a competitive end-of-season handicap run at Liverpool, and he then won the following spring’s Queen’s Prize run at Kempton Park in 1914. It is a race that is still run today. Wing went on to finish third in that season’s British jockeys’ championship. His domestic riding career had to be put on hold with the outbreak of World War I, but racing continued in India and the adventuring Wing travelled overseas. His best day in India came when he steered home five winners on the same card at Calcutta races in March 1916. After his spell in India, Wing arrived in Ireland in 1917. It has been suggested that the young jockey headed to Ireland to avoid conscription, which had been introduced in Britain in 1916 but was never applied to Ireland. In fact, a UK trainer sent over two horses to run at The Curragh and Morny travelled over to ride. They both won, and Wing maintained the winning form – his first five rides in Ireland turned out to be winners. He enjoyed further riding journeys over the Irish Sea and in 1921 he decided to make Ireland his home. He went on to dominate Irish racing for three decades winning the champion jockeys’ title on nine occasions, the Flat racing championship 13 times and establishing a record number of Irish Classic victories. Most Irish jockeys of the day rode both on the Flat and over jumps, but Wing concentrated on the Flat and he reportedly he was regarded as virtually unbeatable over short distances, particularly effective on two-year-olds. His success was recorded to be due primarily to his exceptional strength, his ability to get away quickly at the start, and the speed with which he could pull his whip through. His reputation for timing and putting a horse in front on the line produced a career that yielded more than 2,000 winners and gave rise to the adage “never leave Wing out in a sprint!”

36

In Ireland he rode a five-timer on three occasions at The Curragh, but though he could never manage the elusive six, on one occasion he rode eight consecutive winners over two days. His first Classic win came in the Irish St Leger in 1920, the following year he won the Irish Derby, one of his six wins, and then in 1922 he collected that first-ever Irish 1,000 Guineas. His seventh and last success in the fillies’ race came in 1947 some 25 years after that first victory. He also won the 2,000 Guineas twice, the Irish Oaks once and the Irish St Leger seven times giving him a total of 23 Classic victories. A punter’s dream, his alliance in the 1940s with the big-time owner Joe McGrath with trainer Michael Collins was a “bookmaker’s headache”. Wing’s retainer was reputedly highest paid to a jockey in Ireland up to that time. He was a dedicated sportsman, and reportedly had an “integrity that marked him out in an era of flamboyant rivals and frequently less-than-honest dealings”. In 1949 he retired to train at his Kildare home, and in 1951 he won the Irish St Leger with Do Well. He died in May 1965 and the Morny Wing Memorial Hurdle was run annually at The Curragh for many years in his memory. Wing rode before, during and after both World Wars, and kicked home 2,000 winners through a 38-year career. To have had such a long stint riding, and to have been so successful in an era interrupted by world conflict, before the widespread use of the car and phones, is a considerable achievement. If recalling the names of talented riders who have dominated the sport in the last 70 years, for Morny Wing to still be the winning-most Irish 1,000 Guineas jockey is a testament to his abilities, horsemanship and professionalism.

The outstanding Daylami kicked off his four-year-old season with victory in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, winning under Frankie Dettori for Saeed bin Suroor.

43

THE TATTERSALLS GOLD CUP The Tattersalls Gold Cup was granted Group 1 status in 1999 and since then it has become established as one of the most significant contents for older horses in the opening months of the European racing season. One of the most memorable winners in those early years as a Group 1 was undoubtedly the great Montjeu. Trained by John Hammond in France, the son of Sadler’s Wells arrived at The Curragh for the 2000 renewal of the race having already won the Prix du Jockey Club, the Irish Derby and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe the previous season. Sent off at 1/3, he didn’t disappoint under Mick Kinane, showing a fine turn of foot to escape a pocket in the closing stages and run out the comfortable winner. 2005 produced a sensational renewal of the race that saw the five-time Group 1 winner Bago come over from France to race against the pick of the Irish colts in the shape of the Dermot Weld-trained Grey Swallow and the John Oxx-trained Azamour. In what was an enthralling contest, it was the previous season’s Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow that succeeded in holding off the brave bid of Bago in a tremendous finish. Andre Fabre saddled his only winner of this race in 2006, when Hurricane Run landed the spoils in the hands of Kieren Fallon. The four-year-old had won the Irish Derby here during his Classic campaign and finished that season with victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Fallon was also in the saddle for this victory as he made all on the colt, stretching clear of the smart filly Alexander Goldrun to win by seven lengths at the finish. Since it’s elevation to Group 1 status, only three horses have succeeded in winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup on two separate occasions. The first was the Aidan O’Brien trained So You Think. The son of High Chaparral arrived to Ireland with a huge reputation having won five Group 1s in Australia for Bart Cummings and he consolidated his position as an international star by winning the 2011 and 2012 renewals of the Tattersalls Gold Cup in great style.

44

The second two-time winner of the race was the Roger Charlton-trained Al Kazeem. The son of Dubawi got the better of Camelot to win the 2013 renewal and he came back to the Curragh two years later to beat Fascinating Rock, Postponed and The Grey Gatsby in an epic renewal of the race. This performance was even more remarkable as he had been retired to stud following his five-year-old campaign and to get the horse right back to his best was some achievement for trainer Roger Charlton. The third and last horse to complete the double was no other than magical. A mare with so much talent, she won six Group 1’s in her brilliant career and landed this race in both 2019 and 2020 in great style. Last year we saw the champion jockey Colin Keane add his name to the history books with a superb ride on Helvic Dream and reverse the for with odds-on shot Broome. The deep-cut ground played to his strengths and he had previously shown how well he travelled into his races. Colin Keane was keen not to get upside Broome too early and made his late surge just inside the final furlong, just getting the better of his rival by a short head where it mattered most. All four of his wins thus far have come on soft or heavy ground so if the heavens poor, expect the money to come for this classy individual.

CURRAGH COMMENT This looks a cracking renewal and, although outnumbered by the home team, LORD NORTH could take the prize back to England. The Dubawi gelding has been an unbelievable servant to connections over the years, earning almost four million pounds in prize money, and his Group 1 victory at Meydan last time suggests that he’s as good as ever. Alenquer did get the better of the selection at Lingfield in February and he is a serious danger, especially with William Haggas in such good form, while State Of Rest also demands respect.

SAOIRE

2005 TATTERSALLS IRISH 1,000 GUINEAS WINNER 54

Few stories of Irish Guineas winners are as good as Saoire. The Welsh-bred daughter of Pivotal was purchased for just 4,000 guineas sent into training with Frances Crowley, wife of Pat Smullen. She won her maiden at the second time of asking and progressed into a fine three-year-old, finishing sixth in the Newmarket 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish version. Ridden by Mick Kinane, Saoire was always towards the head of the field and made her challenge early. She was closely pressed by Penkenna Princess under Seb Sanders but held on in the dying strides to win for Crowley, making her the first woman to officially train the winner of an Irish Classic.

55

THE LANWADES STUD STAKES This race was first run in 2004 when it held Group 2 status. From 2007 to 2014 it was run as a Group 3 before returning to Group 2 level in 2015. The race is registered as the Ridgewood Pearl Stakes, which remembers the brilliant John Oxx-trained filly whose stunning three-year-old season in 1995 took in victories in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Coronation Stakes, the Prix du Moulin and the Breeders Cup Mile. English-trained horses have won 5 runnings to date while the only dual winner of the race is Dermot Weld’s Emulous, who was successful in 2011 and 2012. As well as being named after a fine filly, some classy horses have won this race, which falls perfectly in the calendar as a great starting point for top Irish-trained milers. Soviet Song won the race for James Fanshawe in 2004 under Johnny Murtagh, setting up a clash with Attraction in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, in which Soviet Song came out on top over the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner. Aidan O’Brien’s brilliant filly Airwave won in 2005 under Kieren Fallon, and her legacy lives on through her second career as a broodmare. She foaled Meow, a Storm Cat filly who would go on to foal Churchill, 2000 Guineas’ double winner who now stands as a promising sire for the Coolmore operation.

56

Airwave was Aidan O’Brien’s last winner of the race until Magic Wand won the 2020 renewal. Last year we saw Billy Lee and Willie McCreery follow up on their win from their 2016 success with Devonshire. A winner of two Group 3 races coming into this race, Epona Plays no doubt put in her best performance to date and bolted up by four lengths. Epona Plays had the run of things out in front but she was clearly the superior filly on the day. After taking it up quite early, Billy Lee had the field in trouble when he upped the tempo. However, what was most impressive is the way she kicked clear from Soul Search back in second and she looked more in command at the line than any other stage in the tricky conditions.

CURRAGH COMMENT Having gone close at the very top level last year, it’s hard to look too far beyond PEARLS GALORE in this Group 2 event following her sparkling reappearance at Leopardstown last month which saw her justify strong market support in emphatic fashion. The unexposed Twilight Spinner is the obvious danger following her Group 3 win over 7f here earlier in the month but it requires a leap of faith to expect her to be equally as effective over this longer trip. If there is any value lurking, it may lie with the selection’s stablemate Diadora, who shaped as having more to offer on last week’s Irish debut.

THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 1,000 GUINEAS

DISTANCE 1 MILE (1,609 METRES)

WHAT ARE GUINEAS? Guineas were a currency used from the 1600’s to the 1800’s. Used in Great Britain, Guineas were phased out with the introduction of the pound and was a niche currency with it’s use only common in legal fields and livestock auctions. A guinea is equivalent to £1.05. LEGENDARY HORSE

LADY VIOLETTE WON THE FIRST RENEWAL IN 1922 WHAT IS THE RECORD OF ENGLISH HORSES? The last English-trained winner was the Charlie Hills-trained Just The Judge in 2013 under Jamie Spencer, the same team that combined to win the 2019 Irish 2,000 Guineas.

ATTRACTION 2004 WINNER

Mick Channon continued his love affair with the Curragh by saddling the 2012 winner Samitar, while further back Luca Cumani sent out 2002 winner Gossamer under a younger Jamie Spencer. The likes of Sir Michael Stoute, David Elsworth, Ian Balding, Barry Hills and John Dunlop all saddled winners of this race in the 80’s and 90’s, with Henry Cecil winning the 1973 renewal with Cloonagh under rider Greville Starkey.

LEADING TRAINER

AIDAN O’BRIEN 10 WINS

Attraction (2004) Finsceal Beo (2007) Winter (2017) Hermosa (2019)

WHAT IS A CLASSIC? The Classics are five Group 1 races which are all run at the Curragh. Four of the five races are restricted to three-year-olds, and showcase the best horses of the three-year-old generation which shape the breed of the throughbred horse. The five races are the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Derby, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger. The Irish Classics are slightly different to the other European Classics, as the Irish St Leger is not age restricted, so is open to horses aged three and older.

WHO ARE TATTERSALLS? Tattersalls are Europe’s largest bloodstock auctioneers and the world’s oldest, dating back to 1766. From their base at Park Paddocks in Newmarket, Tattersalls offers more than 5,000 thoroughbreds each year and host the most prestigious bloodstock sales, notably the October Yearling Sale which sees millions spent on racing’s next best prospects.

69

THE TATTERSALLS 1000 GUINEAS BEST JOCKEYS & TRAINERS When looking back through the roll of honour, one name stands out more than any other, Aidan O’Brien. The master of Ballydoyle has saddled no fewer than 10 winners of the 1000 Guineas, including four of the last five. He began training in 1996 and by 1997 had already trained his first 1000 Guineas winner, Classic Park. The 2001, 2003 and 2008 renewals all went the way of the Tipperary trainer and since 2010 he’s taken home the prize money six times. Imagine went onto complete the Epsom Oaks double and the top trainer returns this year with Concert Hall, History, Lullaby and Tuesday. The name O’Brien hasn’t always been a regular on the honours list and despite the legendary Vincent O’Brien winning the race three times between 1966 and 1979, there has been a whole host of others to claim the prize. Father and son Kevin and Paddy Prendergast won the race six times between them, while Dermot Weld has won the race four times. The Irish tends to dominate on home soil but British trainers have come over to take the prize back across the Irish Sea. Mick Channon, Sir Michael Stoute, Luca Cumani, Mark Johnston and more recently Adrian Keatley have all claimed the prize.

70

While trainers are masters of getting their horses to the track, their jurisdiction ends once they go into the stalls and it is down to the jockeys to get them home. With Aidan O’Brien having such a hold of the race, it’s no surprise to see Ryan Moore and Seamie Heffernan with eight wins between them. Seamie became the first jockey since Morny Wing to win the race in back-to back years when winning on Empress Josephine last year. Plenty have come close to doing the double and if Seamie were to win it again on History , he would again set another new record. The leading jockey in the race is Morny Wing, who won the race seven times in the early to mid-1900’s. Seamie Heffernan is close on his heels but still has a way to go if he wants to become the top jockey. The late Pat Smullen was a master in the saddle and has two wins to his name in more recent years, while the famed Lester Piggott has two. Former Ballydoyle rider Jamie Spencer has won the race three times but interestingly enough, none of them came for Aidan O’Brien. Walter Swinburn won the race four times in a 20-year timeframe, with his final success happening on the Geoff Wragg trained Marling in 1992.

AGARTHA TRAINER: Joseph O’Brien OWNER: Scott C Heider SIRE: Caravaggio (USA) DAM: Arya Tara (IRE) BREEDER: Whisperview Trading Ltd

A very talented juvenile, Agartga makes her third start of the season in what could be a mighty fine three-year-old campaign, A winner at Leopardstown on her fifth start in the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes, the daughter of Caravaggio progressed further to land the Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes, before contesting two Group 1’s against her own sex. With two good prep runs under her belt already this season in both the 1000 Guineas trial and Cornelscourt Stakes at Leopardstown, she could be a major contender to add Joseph O’Brien’s name onto the history books today.

74

THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 1,000 GUINEAS (GROUP 1) This race was inaugurated a year after the Irish 2000 Guineas and the first running in 1922 was won by Lady Violette and she was ridden by Morny Wing who remains the most successful jockes in the race’s history with seven victories. Wing’s last success came a quarter of a century after his first as he teamed up with Hubert Hartigan to take the 1947 running with Sea Symphony. Only four fillies have completed the English-Irish 1,000 Guineas double. The first to do so was Attraction in 2004 and she was followed by Finsceal Beo (2007), Winter (2017) and Hermosa (2019). Finsceal Beo came within a head of completing the near inconceivable treble of the English-French-Irish Guineas hat-trick. The 20/1 success of Classic Park in 1997 is particularly noteworthy as it was the first classic success for Aidan O’Brien. There have been 28 English-trained winners of the race while the last of the four French trained successes came when Olivier Douieb’s L’Attrayante justified 4/1 favouritism in 1983. In recent years, Irish racing’s biggest names have tasted success in this race, with Aidan O’Brien winning in 2014, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Jessica Harrington won in 2018 with Alpha Centauri and Jim Bolger landed the spoils in 2015 with Pleascach.

CURRAGH COMMENT Tuesday had been topping the ante-post lists for this with good reason after she graduated from a Naas maiden to place in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, but it may pay to take her on with stablemate HISTORY. Aidan O’Brien’s filly took three starts to get off the mark as juvenile, but returned to action with a good win over Agartha at Leopardstown and the yard’s horses tend to improve significantly for their first start of the season. Homeless Songs beat Agartha and Villanova Queen on her reappearance and is respected along with expensive purchase Purplepay.

VERDICT

Hermana Estrella is an interesting runner in the 1000 Guineas having only been seen once on track, just over a year ago. She beat the subsequent Queen Mary winner that day and was six and half lengths clear of the third. However, the selection goes the way of HOMELESS SONGS, trained on the Curragh by Dermot Weld. She was last seen at the beginning of April winning the Group 3 1000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown and can deliver another bold showing this afternoon.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. HABITAT TRIBUTE Purchased at the sales for $105,000, the son of Sir Gaylord was ruled out as a Juvenile, due to a few niggling injuries he picked up. Some may have given up on a horse with such issues but Habitat quickly began to repay Charles Engelhard’s perseverance at the third time of asking when he was an eased down five-length winner at Haydock in a minor contest. His was immediately stepped up in Grade and headed to Newbury for the Lockinge Stakes. The field was awash with talented animals, including the 2000 Guineas-placed Colts, Jimmy Reppin and Tower Walk. There was sustained market support and he halved in price, eventually going off 10-1. Habitat led inside the final furlong and eventually prevailed by half a length from Jimmy Reppin. The rest of the field was nowhere to be seen and you couldn’t help but be impressed by that effort. It proved to be no flash in the pan and his ability was confirmed two weeks later when he was beaten just half a length by the dual English and Irish Guineas hero Right Track, in a gruelling St James’s Palace Stakes. He was receiving no weight allowance as he had in the Lockinge, so this effort could be marked up even further. He was given two months off the track to get some well-earned rest but returned in the Autumn to try his hand in France. He easily defeated his rivals on better ground in the Prix Quincey at Deauville and the following week the conqueror retuned to more familiar shores to attempt to win the Wills Mile at Goodwood. He faced old adversary Jimmy Reppin but again he dispatched him in even more emphatic style, also in behind him was the brilliant filly Lucyrowe. None of the three were ever beaten again on the racecourse. Despite his win, Habitat looked to be unsettled by the quicker surface and didn’t go to the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes due to the firmness of the ground. Instead, he returned to France for a final racecourse appearance in the Prix Du Moulin on ‘Arc day. He scored by a brilliant two-lengths to round off what had been a brilliant three-year-old career. He retired to stud at Grangewilliam Stud in Ireland, where he was an excellent stallion, his time at stud came to an end in 1986, rounding off what had been quite the racing career.

CURRAGH COMMENT LUSTOWN BABA finished third in a Group 3 here at the start of the month and the mare, who sports cheekpieces for the first time, makes plenty of appeal as she drops back to 6f for the first time this season. Rough Diamond went up 8lb for winning at Naas on his latest start and he is likely to enter calculations once again. Additional (second) and Big Gossey (third) both ran with credit at Naas last month and are expected to be in the mix, while Carlton Banks, who finished 12th in that contest, is capable of a lot better.

CURRAGH COMMENT Handicap debutant JUNCTURE could give weight and a beating to these rivals. The Dark Angel filly was on a steep upward curve prior to struggling in the English 1000 Guineas and she is fancied to bounce right back to form in this lesser event. Stablemate Georgeta readily won her maiden at Gowran last time and is respected, although Miss Mirabell was even more impressive in victory at Gowran recently. Albula wears a tongue-tie on her return and has a definite chance, as does course winner Dark Vega.

CURRAGH COMMENT Joseph O’Brien has a pair of contenders in the class-dropping River Rain and Selador, who showed plenty of promise on debut at Dundalk. Fennela put in a decent effort after being hampered early on debut at Naas and could be much better for that outing, while Engagement Ring is bred in the purple being a full-sister to dual Classic winner Capri. The latter’s trainer Aidan O’Brien could have even stronger claims with ARK here, as she has gone close in a pair of maidens so far this term and the fitting of blinkers could spark the slight improvement needed.
