After two years of Covid restrictions, we are very much enjoying the opportunity to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh and I hope you have a most enjoyable day. The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Here are some of the most common racing terms you are likely to hear when you are racing. Brush up on them and you will sound like a seasoned professional in no time! ALLOWANCE

DISTANCE

The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience.

The length of a race.

ANTE-POST

Describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls.

Betting (usually for the most important races) days or even months before the race is due to take place.

APPRENTICE Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while they are learning.

BACKWARD Young horse which needs time to mature.

CLERK OF THE COURSE Official in charge of running the racing programme, at the Curragh it is Brendan Sheridan.

CLERK OF THE SCALES Key in the delivery of a successful racing operation. Their job is to check that the horses in each race carry the correct weights.

COLOURS The racing silks worn by the jockeys.

COLT Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old.

CONNECTIONS The owner and trainer of a racehorse.

Kildare Town Derby Festival The Festival of the summer is back with a bang, celebrating one of the world’s greatest race The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. The festival has gathered an extensive committee of business, cultural and community leaders to create a unique programme of events from 19 to 26 June 2022 with something for everyone to enjoy. Saturday is Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby with Ireland’s greatest international horse race taking centre stage on what promises to be a day of excitement, prestige, spectacle, style and fun! Sunday featuring the clash of Europe’s leading ﬁllies in the Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes, while the family day theme will include plenty of free activities for younger racegoers to enjoy.

LESTER PIGGOTT TRIBUTE 16

The Curragh is delighted to unveil a magnificent statue of jockey Lester Piggott, a truly iconic sporting legend. We would like to welcome his daughters Maureen and Tracy and son Jamie to the races today. We would also like to thank David St George for presenting the racecourse with the statue and welcome him and his mother Christine. Lester enjoyed a very close association with The Curragh achieving many great victories especially in partnership with trainer Vincent O’Brien. Nicknamed ‘the Long Fellow’ because of his unusually tall height for a flat jockey, he rode his first winner at the age of 12 in 1948. In a career that spanned almost 50 years, his catalogue of famous victories include 16 Irish Classics at the Curragh, and 30 English Classics. He was crowned champion jockey an incredible 11 times. A unique exhibition attended by Lester celebrating his career took place at the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival in 2016.

THE TATTERSALLS IRI The first Classic in the Irish flat racing season celebrates it’s 100th year in 2021. The Irish equivalent of the British Classic, the race gets its name from the original prize fund. The most presitigious race in the calendar for three-year-old colts, Irish racing history is lived through the 2,000 Guineas.

SANTA CLAUS TRAINER: Mick Rogers OWNER: John Ismay SIRE: Chamossaire (GB) DAM: Aunt Clara (GB) BREEDER: Dr F Smorfitt The first of our legendary Irish 2,000 Guineas winners is certainly a special one. Santa Claus was bred in England but was trained on the Curragh by Mick Rogers, son of Darby Rogers who purchased the horse with owner John Ismay. His first run on the track came at the Curragh in the Anglesey Stakes but he never figured and it wasn’t until a storming success in the National Stakes that Santa Claus put his name into the ring for the next year’s Classics. In winning the National Stakes, he demolished Mesopotamia, a horse who had won the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and had himself been touted as a future star, by an eight length margin There were concerns over Santa Claus’ ability going into his three-year-old campaign. Not a typically flashy horse, he was described as lightly framed and disjointed in the build up to his Classic tests, but those fears were quickly put to bed. He routed the field in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at his beloved Curragh and looked to hold all the cards in the Derby at Epsom next. He delivered in front of a huge crowd, beating a subsequent St Leger winner, and returned to the Curragh to complete the Epsom-Curragh Derby double.

CURRAGH COMMENT A race which has showcased the talents of some useful juveniles in the past and, as is often the case, the Ballydoyle runners look the ones to focus on. Aidan O’Brien has already sent out a host of smart youngsters this season and his newcomer Congo River will be worth monitoring closely in the market, especially in relation to stablemate AGE OF KINGS, who made a promising start to his career when runner-up in a conditions race at Naas two weeks ago. That experience should stand him in good stead and the son of Kingman gets the nod, with Jessica Harrington’s debutant Blanc De Noir, who has plenty of speed in his pedigree, also worth considering against the Ballydoyle pair.

1984 SADLER’S WELLS TRAINER: Vincent O’Brien OWNER: Robert Sangster SIRE: Northern Dancer (CAN) DAM: Fairy Bridge (USA) BREEDER: Dr F Smorfitt Sadler’s Wells is best known for the influence he has had on the thoroughbred as a breed, but he wasn’t a bad horse on the track. A horse which arguably started the many decades of dominance for the SangsterO’Brien-Magnier empire, Sadler’s Wells would become a founding sire for the all conquering Coolmore operation. A winner of the Beresford Stakes as a two-year-old, Sadler’s Wells finished behind stablemate El Gran Senor on his seasonal reappearance in the Gladness Stakes. Stepped up in trip on his next start he convincingly won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial before dropping in trip to tackle the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Stable jockey Pat Eddery chose to ride stablemate Capture Him but Sadler’s Wells came out on top in a tight finish, seeing off his rivals close home to win the Classic. He then finished second behind Darshaan in a quality renewal of the French Derby where Rainbow Quest was third, and was kept to a mile and a quarter to win the Eclipse at Sandown on his next run. His battling nature saw him upped again in trip for the King George VI at Ascot, where he finished a credible second and his final racecourse win came in the Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. However, Sadler’s Wells will be best remembered for his career at stud. He sired Salsabil, Galileo, Milan, High Chaparral and Istabraq amongst many and can be credited with founding the thoroughbred line upon which we race today.

THE GAIN MARBLE HILL STAKES The race was first staged in 1967 and was ran over five furlongs until upped in trip to six for the 2017 renewal. The race is a recent upgrade to Group 3 status, and was ran for the first time as a Group 3 in 2020. Once again this year, the race forms part of the new Champion Collection, a series of races sponsored by GAIN for the top juvenile horses. The series commenced with the First Flier Stakes, which was won this year by Aidan O’Brien’s Blackbeard with this race as the next step and the series culminates with the Railway Stakes on Irish Derby day. The winning horse from the Railway Stakes receives free entry into the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. With this race ideal for the most precocious juvenile sprinters, it’s no surprise to see some of the top yards in Ireland with the best winning records. Aidan O’Brien has won this 11 times since 1999, with the likes of Power, Caravaggio and Fairyland particular highlights for Ballydoyle. Looking back further, Fasliyev won the race in 1999 under a fine ride from Mick Kinane, who won the race two years earlier onboard Golden Mirage for Mick Channon. Kinane would go on to ride three further winners of the race, while Fasliyev would progress to win the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Prix Morny, which led to him being named Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. In recent years, Power carried the Tabor silks to victory again in 2011 under Seamie Heffernan before following up in the National Stakes later in the year and then winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas as a three-year-old. Generational colt Caravaggio showed his potential when winning the race in 2016 and he would go on to have an unbeaten juvenile season where he won the Coventry Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes.

An unbelievably quick horse, Caravaggio was one of the most exciting winners of the race, winning by two lengths and leaving the crowd in no doubt of his superstar potential. In 2019 Siskin took the Curragh by storm under Colin Keane. An easy winner on debut at Naas, Siskin was upped in class by Ger Lyons and ran out an impressive winner of this race over four smart rivals. However, this race has become the Chris Hayes show recently as he rode the Henry de Bromhead-trained Minaun to success in 2020 and then made it back-to-back victories with the exciting Castle Star. Given a patient ride and held up in last, Castle Star always looked to be catching the eye as he made smooth headway down the far side two furlongs from home. The race was set up perfectly for him and when his rider asked him to quicken, he stretched clear in very taking fashion. The smart colt subsequently went on to ﬁnish runner-up in the Railway Stakes behind Go Bears Go and was a well-supported fourth in the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. The speedster then rounded off his good season with another excellent run in the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes, just held in the ﬁnal strides by Perfect Power.

There was a time, however, not that long ago where American-trained horses ventured across the Atlantic on very rare occasions. One such occasion was in the case of Fourstars Allstar. The Irish 2,000 Guineas had been a plan in trainer Leo O’Brien’s mind for a while, and he moved the horse to Florida to train on the turf in preparation. Fourstars Allstar arrived in Ireland a few days before the Classic and was ridden by a young Mike Smith in his preparation. In a race that included the second and third from the Newmarket 2000 Guineas, American hopes rested on a relative outsider in a hot field. With his blue blinkers on, Fourstars Allstar settled well and was sent into an early lead, setting fair fractions out in front. Star of Gdansk and Christy Roche put up a strong challenge but the American horse fought back and overhauled his rival, who had overtaken him by the final furlong, to win by a head on the line. He returned to the States having conquered Europe but found life harder back in America, and it wasn’t until his four, five and six-year-old seasons that he regained the winning thread and landed a series of valuable handicaps.

1992 RODRIGO DE TRIANO TRAINER: Peter Chapple-Hyam OWNER: Robert Sangster SIRE: El Gran Senor (USA) DAM: Hot Princess (GB) BREEDER: Swettenham Stud Another product of the Sangster empire, the American-bred Rodrigo De Triano took the Classics by storm in 1992. A win in the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket signed off an undefeated juvenile season for Rodrigo De Triano and he excelled as a three-year-old. A pipe opener at Newbury blew away the cobwebs for his win in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas and he stepped up further on that when doing the Newmarket-Curragh double under Lester Piggott. The 8-11 favourite in a six runner field, Rodrigo De Triano was held up at the back of the field and as the rest of them got to work Piggott sat and waited for the gap to appear. With Lucky Lindy and Irish Memory hard at work Rodrigo De Triano found the perfect gap between them and scooted through into the lead on the rail. He quickened smoothly and wasn’t hard pressed to win easily. He took some while to rediscover his form following defeats in the Derby and St James’ Palace Stakes but delivered in style to win the International Stakes at York. The winning continued in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket before his new Japanese owners decided the Breeders’ Cup Classic would be his next target. Partnered by Walter Swinburn in place of the injured Piggott, Rodrigo De Triano never figured on the surface and was subsequently retired. He was voted Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and took up stud duties in Japan.

2002 ROCK OF GIBRALTAR TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien OWNER: Sue Magnier & Alex Ferguson SIRE: Danehill (USA) DAM: Offshore Boom (IRE) BREEDER: Joe Crowley & Mr & Mrs A P O’Brien Aidan O’Brien’s fourth Irish 2,000 Guineas winner, Rock Of Gibraltar’s success on the track would have been that little sweeter for his trainer, given he bred the horse. A winner on debut at the Curragh, Rock Of Gibraltar had a stellar two-year-old career which included two Group 1 wins a Longchamp and Newmarket. His three-year-old season began with a bang in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas which he won under Johnny Murtagh, but Mick Kinane returned to the saddle for his win in the Irish equivalent on his next start. Held up behind his six rivals, Rock Of Gibraltar made smooth progress and went into a challenging position very easily under Kinane, before extending away in the ﬁnal furlong to win cosily under a typically tender Kinane ride, sealing a 1-2-3 for Aidan O’Brien. His next race at Royal Ascot saw repeat tactics by Kinane and his running style made for tremendous viewing. Rock Of Gibraltar showed his versatility and class to win both a Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and then a Prix Moulin at Longchamp. His ﬁnal career start came at Arlington in the Breeders’ Cup, where he went down by just under a length despite being badly hampered at a crucial stage of the race. Rock Of Gibraltar stands at Coolmore Stud and remains one of the most talented sons of Danehill.

THE WEATHERBYS IRELAND GREENLANDS STAKES PREVIEW The Joseph Murphy-trained Gustavus Weston landed last year’s Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes and he is back to defend his crown. Three of his four career successes have come over today’s course-and-distance and it is likely that his recent return was being used as a prep for this Group 2. Having carried a penalty in the Listed Woodlands Stakes, he should come on for that and will appreciate stepping back up to six furlongs. Glen Shiel was sent off favourite for last year’s race, but finished just fourth on what was his first start of the campaign. Interestingly, he has had a run already this season, when runner-up behind Brad The Brief at Haydock, and is another previous course-and-distance winner who looks to have been primed for this race. Brad The Brief drew nicely clear at the Merseyside venue and would appreciate any rain, as his last five wins have come on ground ranging from good-to-soft to heavy. There are several potential improvers in the line-up, with a trio four-year-olds taking their chance, including A Case For You who is fresh from having won a Group 1 in Meydan. Adrian McGuinness’ Hot Streak colt has to shoulder a 3lbs penalty for that victory, but is clearly still on an upward curve. He has certainly improved since finishing third behind Gustavus Weston in the Phoenix Sprint Stakes last August and gained a first top-level success in the Prix de l’Abbaye in October. Versatile in terms of ground and trip, he boasts solid credentials and has only once finished out of the first three during his last seven starts. Power Under Me finished runner-up in the aforementioned Phoenix Sprint Stakes and has only run three times since, winning his last two starts. Both victories came at Listed level and he has yet to land a Group contest, but he gave 3lbs to the filly Mooniesta when winning in determined fashion at Cork last month. The runner-up has since failed to advertise that form when third in the Woodlands Stakes (finished in front of the reappearing Gustavus Weston), although third home Twilight Spinner did frank the form when winning the Group 3 Athasi Stakes at this track at the start of the month. After just eight career starts, Power Under Me is easily the least-exposed horse in the field and remains open to any amount of improvement.

Three seven-year-olds complete a field of seven, with Majestic Colt the only one of the trio to have had a run this season. Formerly trained by Andreas Wohler in Germany, he has yet to run over today’s trip since moving to Ireland and needs to improve on what he has shown in two starts to date for Denis Hogan. He is a dual Group 3 winner over six furlongs, however, and ought to appreciate stepping back up in distance. His stable-mate Make A Challenge and the Johnny Murtagh-trained Urban Beat each make their respective seasonal reappearance and the former was last seen finishing fourth behind Mooniesta and Gustavus Weston in the five furlong Sapphire Stakes last July. A course-and-distance winner the previous August, he is a four-time course winner in all, although his two most recent successes came on soft ground. Runner-up in this event last year, that was his fourth start of the season and the ground was much more to his liking. Urban Beat has also won three times at the Curragh, but the Red Jazz gelding often needs a run or two to peak and although we are used to seeing him sport headgear of some sort, he doesn’t wear any on this occasion. He also ran in last year’s race, finishing sixth. Paul Ferguson Weatherbys

THE WEATHERBYS IRELAND GREENLANDS STAKES One of the three most prestigious sprints in the Irish racing calendar, the Greenlands Stakes takes its name from the area of the Curragh plain where the racecourse is located. In 2015 the race was upgraded to Group 2 level and restricted to horses aged four or older as part of a significant reshaping of the Irish sprinting programme. Slade Power (2014) and Merchant Navy (2018) have won this race before going to land the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. College Chapel completed the same double as the three-year-olds in 1993 while the 2000 winner Namid went on to win that year’s Prix de l’Abbaye. A sprint which has graced the Curragh for many years, the names Lester Piggott and Vincent O’Brien feature heavily on the roll of honour. O’Brien trained thirteen winners of the race between 1958 and 1994, with Piggott riding six winners, his final win also O’Brien’s with the win of College Chapel in 1994 who was winning the race for the second year running. The David Barron-trained Hitchens is the only other horse to win the race twice, with his victories in 2011 and 2013 gained under Fran Berry and Johnny Murtagh respectively. One of the most feelgood stories in recent years was the win of Gordon Lord Byron in 2017. Trained with dedication by Tom Hogan, the then nine-year-old was an outsider under Chris Hayes but won smoothly, seeing off fellow veteran sprinters Suedois and Downforce further back in the field. The Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes was one of his 108 runs.

In 2020, rather unusually, the race was ran eight days after the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot, but Speak In Colours made little of the short break and showed his class to win in a blanket ﬁnish. Last year we saw a masterclass ride from Gary Carroll on Gustavus Weston who seems to love winning at the Curragh and proved so again with an uncomplicated success. The underfoot conditions played into his hand and as soon as he picked up the lead, he won going away by just under a length from the pacesetter Make A Challenge in the hands of Joe Doyle. Subsequently, Joseph Murphy’s in-mate went on to ﬁnish second in the Paddy Power Sapphire Stakes, followed by a very convincing victory in the Rathasker Stud Phoneix Sprint Stakes, improving his record here at the Curragh.

Kept fairly quiet as a two-year-old, Buckaroo showed he had trained on well as a three-year-old when beaten just a short-head in the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown. A winner on his second start at Galway, slighty up in trip, the smart son of Fastnet Rock was only seen twice since as a juvenile, contesting the Champions Juvenile Stakes and the Criterium de Saint-Cloud over in France. His comeback run was something connections could be proud of after the winter break, behind the smart Piz Badile. Picked up for just 210,000gns at the Tatts Craven Breeze-Up, this looks to be another steal for the all blue of Godolphin. By top sire Oasis Dream, Native Trail has a top pedigree behind him, and this colt is one of the most exciting three-year-olds in training. He remained unbeaten as a juvenile, starting off with a four-length demolition job on debut at Sandown, readily kicking clear. He then took the step-up to Group company in his stride when landing the Superlative Stakes. He progressed further at the Curragh, to continue his domination, over the odds-on favourite Point Lonsdale in the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes, before rounding off the season with the Dewhurst Stakes. Unlike some superstar juveniles, he looks just as promising now maturing to a three-year-old, He landed the Cravan Stakes at Newmarket, before losing his unbeaten run in the 2000 Guineas, falling to his unexposed stablemate Coroebus.

THE TATTERSALLS IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS (GROUP 1) The Irish 2,000 Guineas was established in 1921 but it was not until not 1969 that Right Tack became the ﬁrst horse to complete the English-Irish 2000 Guineas double. In all, nine colts have won both races, the most recent being Churchill in 2017. There have been 29 English-trained winners of the race, with one from France (Spinning World) and one from America (Fourstars Allstar). The 1935 winner Museum remains the longest priced winner in the race’s history at 100/1 while there have been two 33/1 winners in Ballymore (1972) and Northern Treasure (1976). The James Tollertrained Bachelor Duke was a maiden when winning this race in 2004. Winners of this race often head next to Royal Ascot for the St James’ Palace Stakes, with the last horse to follow up there Gleneagles in 2015. Irish racing’s biggest names have won this feature contest, with the surname O’Brien responsible for many memorable victories. Both Vincent and Aidan have saddled historic winners of this race, with Tommy Burns and Martin Quirke tied for the winningmost rider from their victories in the early years of the race. Recent years have given wins to the likes of Kevin Prendergast and Ken Condon, Charles Hills and Ger Lyons. However, last year we saw another trainer add their name to the history books as Jim Bolger and Rory Cleary teamed up with Mac Swiney.

CURRAGH COMMENT Champion juvenile NATIVE TRAIL went into the 2000 Guineas having swept all before him last season, in landing both the National Stakes and the Dewhurst, but he suffered his first defeat to stable companion Coroebus. The son of Oasis Dream still emerged with plenty of credit, having been drawn away from his main rival, and returning to the Curragh might bring about improvement, having not looked particularly comfortable in the dip at Newmarket. Buckaroo has taken his form to a new level this year, beating several of these in a Listed contest here earlier in the month, and he commands plenty of respect along with Imperial Fighter, who wasn’t far off the best horses in this crop last season.

Charlie Appleby’s NATIVE TRAIL will be expected to go one better than his English 2000 Guineas exploits and take the spoils in the Irish 2000 Guineas at a track where he has already enjoyed Group 1 success in his career. Buckaroo, for the Joseph O’Brien team, looks the obvious danger on paper however consideration must be given to Ivy League, who was supplemented for the race earlier in the week. With plenty of racing under his belt already this season, his ﬁfth start of the year may see further improvement for the son of Galileo.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
