The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

The Curragh would like to acknowledge the generous support of Scott Heider and his family today and celebrate their growing association with horse racing in Ireland. Scott Heider and his family has been involved with racing in Ireland for six years now. The history of the Irish horse is what initially drew them in and caused them to expand their racing operation from the States to Ireland. “It’s just been a fantastic experience for us. We love our partnership with Joseph O’Brien and we’ve been very fortunate to race some talented individuals on Irish racecourses the last few years. Horse Racing Ireland has been a pleasure to work with as they always seem to go out of there way to make sure our experience is quite special.” “I began racing and breeding thoroughbreds with my father 26 years ago in The States. We’ve enjoyed some terriﬁc times and been blessed with a number of high caliber horses including 2019 Grade I winner “Mia Mischief”. But there’s something extra special about racing in Ireland with it’s incredible history. The Heider’s success has been marked with victories on some of racing’s biggest days. Crossﬁrehurricane won on debut at Limerick and followed that up with three successive victories, notably in the Listed Patton Stakes at Dundalk and then the Gallinule Stakes, which they sponsor today.

The talented Pista has also showcased her talent, progressing rapidly under the care of Joseph O’Brien to take the Vinnie Roe Stakes at Leopardstown before following up in the Group 2 Park Hill at Doncaster. Her fine three-year-old season ended with a close second behind the smart filly Wonderful Tonight in the Group 1 Prix de Royallieu at Longchamp. Agartha is another smart-filly that Scott has on his hands in the Joseph O’Brien stable. She landed the Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown in fantastic style, before kicking on again to land the Debutante Stakes here at the Curragh. She rounded off her juvenile season with two fantastic efforts in Group 1 company and looks to have matured nicely as a three-year-old. Twilight Spinner is a more recent recruit and looks to be a good pick-up after landing the Coolmore Circus Maximus Irish EBF Athasi Stakes this year.

CURRAGH COMMENT A big-field handicap with plenty of useful performers on show and, unsurprisingly, a case can be made for plenty. Mutasarref may still have more to offer for Ger Lyons and warrants plenty of respect along with his stablemate Admiral Nelson, who steps up in trip after shaping with promise at Cork on his debut for the Glenburnie handler. However, it was hard not to be taken by the winning performance of HAZIYA at Leopardstown on her first run for Joseph O’Brien last month and, with potentially more to come, the daughter of Le Havre makes plenty of appeal. Fastnet Crown caught the eye in the Mallow at Cork on his latest start and can also feature.

VERDICT

The inaugural running of the William Hill Emerald Mile sees an extremely competitive ﬁeld go to post. Haziya is the likely favourite, last seen winning by three lengths at Leopardstown in April, on his ﬁrst start for the yard. However with extra places available with William Hill, the nod could go to Adrian McGuinness’ STAR HARBOUR to build on his C&D third in the Irish Lincolnshire on his only start this season.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
