I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all here today for the second meeting of our 2022 season. We are delighted to be up and running for the year with some exciting prospects having already taken advantage of the mild Spring at our opening meeting. After two years of restrictions, we are very much enjoying the opportunity to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh. We have made some small changes to our offering which we hope you will enjoy and are always interested in hearing customer feedback. In 2022, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings an increase of two over last year - and we have an exciting programme of quality flat racing on offer throughout the year. One of our objectives here is 100% race sponsorship for the year and we are very grateful to today’s sponsors - Irish EBF, Manguard Plus Security, Holden Plant Rentals, Castlefield Stud, Hollywoodbets and TRI Equestrian for the support which they have given us. I would also like to thank the owners with runners here at the Curragh today for your support - we hope your experience is a good one. The Curragh is a special racecourse, one of three in County Kildare, and in just over two weeks on April 26th, our sister racecourse at Punchestown will stage its five-day National Hunt Festival with full crowds for the first time since 2019 – we wish them all the best for what will be a fabulous week of racing. We race here next at the Curragh the following Bank Holiday Monday, May 2nd, with our Newbridge Parishes Community Raceday in aid of local community-based projects. As we set out on our 2022 season, it is appropriate to look back on the last two years, acknowledge the exceptional work done by all frontline workers in combatting this pandemic and to remember those that have lost loved ones in this time. The Ukranian flag will also be flying here at the Curragh today in recognition of the suffering being endured by the people of that country. The Curragh is working with Newbridge Lions Club to help people displaced or bereaved by the war. A sombre note, which puts in perspective how lucky we are to be able to enjoy our day’s racing. The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT Lord Abama shaped with plenty of encouragement when finishing fourth over course and distance on his debut last October, running on takingly after meeting some interference. The son of Profitable should make a bold bid but may have to settle for minor honours behind GOBI STAR, who also made a promising start to his career when runner-up to the classy Ballydoyle sprinter New York City at Navan last month. El Magnifique produced some solid form as a juvenile and can make his presence felt, while Breezy Zoff, who ran well on her debut for Gavin Cromwell at Dundalk just over two weeks ago, may also figure.

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. THE HOLLYWOODBETS ALLEGED STAKES A relatively new addition to the racing calendar, The Hollywoodbets Alleged Stakes was first ran in 2003, with the inaugural renewal won by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Black Sam Bellamy with Mick Kinane in the saddle. The early years of the race saw Johnny Murtagh ride back-to-back winners in 2005 and 2006 with Sublimity and Arch Rebel respectively. Parish Hall (pictured) was victorious twice under Kevin Manning for Jim Bolger, winning in 2013 and 2015, with his treble denied in 2014 by Denis Hogan’s Inish Meain and John Oxx’s Tarana, who finished first and second respectively. In the 2010’s, the race has acted as the perfect starting point for Ireland’s top 10- and 12-furlong horses, with talented mare Zhukova, winner in 2016, taking the race on her seasonal debut before going on to follow up in the Group 1 Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont Park the following year. Air Pilot became the first, and so far only, winner of the race trained in the United Kingdom when prevailing in 2017 under Fran Berry. Irish Derby winner Capri made a winning seasonal debut when landing this in 2018, with Magical (pictured) making it back-to-back wins in the race for Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien in 2019.

In 2020 we saw a clash between three in the race, with the Joseph O’Brien-trained Buckhurst coming out on top over favourite Sir Dragonet in second and stablemate Numerian back in third. While there were only three runners, the race was a fascinating contest, with Buckhurst making all under Wayne Lordan and Sir Dragonet coming from the back of the pack under Seamie Heffernan. Numerian settled in second under Declan McDonogh and was outclassed back in third, but the first two home had an interesting battle up front, with Buckhurst using his superior stamina to see off his rival and win by a length and a half, with the result never really in doubt. The race last year stayed with the O’Brien family, but this time returned to Aiden. 2019 Epsom Derby fourth, Broome (pictured) was on somewhat of a upward curve after his win in the Devoy Stakes at Naas. He was by far the classiest animal on paper and made his top-class experience count to win by half a length. Ryan Moore gave a very similar ride to the one he gave on Lancaster House, but Broome didn’t quite pick up in the same style and needed some rousting along from Ryan. It looked as though Thundering Nights had managed to slip away to give Joseph his second success in the race but Broome made up some excellent late ground to take victory in the shadows of the post.

THE HOLLYWOODBETS GLADNESS STAKES First ran in 1963, the Hollywoodbets Gladness Stakes has had a few changes to the conditions down the years. The first renewal of the race was ran over a mile and a quarter, shortened to a mile in 1964 and cut further to seven furlongs in 1970 when it was won by Nijinsky (pictured), with it remaining over the specialist trip ever since. Upgraded to Group 3 level in 1987, it was ran as an open age contest for many years before being closed to three-year-olds in 2004. 10 years later it was made available to three-year-olds and above, and it’s been an open age contest ever since. Vincent O’Brien dominated this race from 1970 to 1990, winning first with Nijinksy and taking the race wih Lomond, El Gran Senor and Great Lakes his final winner in 1990. In recent years, the race has been won by a variety of trainers. Aidan O’Brien has won the race recently with Excelebration (pictured) and then back-to-back with Lancaster House. Excelebration went onto claim two Group One’s, one in France and then again on Champions day. He has since had a very successful career as a sire, Barney Roy more than followed in his footsteps, winning eight times and achieving a rating of 122.

Kevin Prendergast trained two-time winner Mustameet to success under Declan McDonogh in 2005 and 2007, with Tommy Stack also training two winners in 2011 and 2016 with Lolly for Dolly and Onenightidreamed respectively. The 2020 renewal was ran in June, following the resumption of racing after the initial shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sent to the front early under Heffernan, Lancaster House was clear at the halfway stage and just had to be pushed along slightly to maintain his lead a furlong out. Lancaster House returned last year to defend his crown and was sent off the 9/4 favourite after his 2020 success. In an open looking renewal, Ryan Moore was happy to sit in behind the front group and got a lovely toe into the race. Free Solo took them along up until the two-furlong marker but was quickly swallowed up by his rivals. Aiden O’Brien’s five-year-old was much the best horse in the race and showed an excellent turn off foot to leave his rivals fighting for the minor places. Previously this race had been won by a whole host of trainers and we could get a new name on the roll of honour as trainer Aiden O’Brien has no horses entered. Dermot Weld, Ger Lyons and Jim Bolger have all enjoyed success in this race before, so it will be interesting to see if one of theirs can come out on top today.

CURRAGH COMMENT Samrogue’s turf form leaves a lot to be desired, but she has been firmly on the upgrade at Dundalk and could translate that improvement back to the grass. Maccliff is another whose all-weather form would give her a chance, but preference is for LEXINGTON LIBERTY. Denis Hogan’s filly will have pleased her new connections when sixth in a similarly big field here on her reappearance and any improvement for that run would make her tough to beat off the same mark. Seven Worlds signed off last season with a narrow defeat over 5f here and could go well if raring to go on his return to action.
