WELCOME Welcome to Plumpton – Winter Jumps Raceday Our third fixture of the new year and I would like to welcome you to our January Winter Jumps Raceday. It was only a week ago since we last raced at Plumpton and we were fortunate to see some thrilling racing with very close finishes and we again hope for the same excitement today. I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Weatherby’s, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Blue Bell Emsworth and William Hill. We wish you all have a tremendous day. We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 51 runners declared across 6 races worth just shy of £60,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race the £17,500 Class 3 Blue Bell Emsworth Gilo’s 40th Birthday Handicap Hurdle. Last year we saw Jerrash win the feature race, trained by Gary Moore and ridden by Jamie Moore beating Midnightreflection by 1¼ lengths. The renewal this year looks strong with 7 going to post. Today we have Baron Alco, nickname ‘Barry’ in our Retired Racehorse Stable. He is our Retraining Of Racehorses (ROR) ‘Horses for Courses’ and we are delighted to welcome him to Plumpton. During his career he won a pair of Cheltenham bonus series races in the 2016/17 season for owner John Stone and defeated Frodon in the BetVictor Gold Cup. Make sure you pop over and give him a polo and a pat. Our next two fixtures will be Monday 12th and Monday 26th February so if you are thinking of booking tickets or hospitality for either day make sure you visit our website or contact one of our team now. With Easter early this year, Sunday 31st March and Monday 1st April, if you are thinking of booking make sure you do this early as this is a popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand. Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Best wishes Craig Staddon Chief Executive

CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling. 1.

Pick your winner! There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. - Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. - Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. – With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. – At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off . – Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)

for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4? Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price. If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner. The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA rating

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

RACE 1

KILBARRY HILL has been consistent so far this season, posting solid efforts to finish placed on all three of his starts, and he may be able to get his head in front in what looks a winnable contest. Ballyvaughan Bay is open to plenty of improvement after just two starts under Rules and he may prove the main danger to the selection. Madam Ryder will need to bounce back from a lacklustre effort at Lingfield over 2m last month if she is to feature, but she represents a top stable and is not totally dismissed. totewin: Kilbarry Hill toteeachway: Ballyvaughan Bay

RACE 2

DUHALLOW TOMMY impressed when scoring by 13 lengths on his chasing debut over this C&D last week, beating the reopposing Clondaw Robin into second, and a 7lb penalty may not be enough to stop Toby Lawes’ gelding from going in again. Filanderer was a five-length second behind a subsequent winner and potentially useful sort at Wincanton last month and he rates the biggest danger racing off an unchanged mark. totewin: Duhallow Tommy toteeachway: Filanderer

RACE 3

JUNKANOO has made a satisfactory start to life over hurdles, last seen running with plenty of credit when finishing a close-up second at Kempton. He should make a bold bid to go one place better for a yard who tend to excel with ex-Flat horses. Mako Of The Glade is of major interest on his first start for the Venetia Williams stable, particularly if the betting market speaks favourably about his chances. Gearing’s Point was last seen finishing a creditable fifth at Lingfield over 1m4f on the Flat, but he will need to improve on his Fontwell second in order to trouble the selection. totewin: Junkanoo toteeachway: Mako Of The Glade

RACE 4

Lassue posted another creditable effort in defeat when third in a class 2 event at Kempton last month. This ease in grade should help the daughter of Geordieland and another bold bid is anticipated off only 1lb higher in the ratings. However, she’s likely to be priced accordingly, so it may pay to take a punt on potential improver ILOVETHENIGHTLIFE. Joe Tizzard’s mare could relish this extra distance and the six-year-old has more going for her than most. The lightly-raced Doughmore Bay is also worth a second look. totewin: Ilovethenightlife toteeachway: Lassue

RACE 5

Although NO HUBS NO HOOBS hasn’t always looked the most straightforward, there is no doubting that he has the ability to succeed off his current rating. First-time cheekpieces could be the making of the eight-year-old and he shades the verdict over fellow in-form rival Morfee. Seamus Mullins’ charge lost little in defeat when a close-up second over an inadequate extended 2m3f trip here earlier in the month and he isn’t taken lightly. The returning Born At Midnight makes most appeal of the remainder. totewin: No Hubs No Hoobs toteeachway: Morfee

RACE 6

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

Ferrybridge made the most of better ground and a career-low mark when gaining a breakthrough victory at Newcastle last month. With that in mind, a 3lb rise in the ratings and more testing conditions may leave James Owen’s inmate vulnerable. A first-time hood could enable the keen-going KOTARI to settle better and the five-year-old looks fairly treated on his handicap bow. The selection’s stablemate Tara Iti, a dual C&D winner, also enters calculations. totewin: Kotari toteeachway: Ferrybridge

LAST MEETING REVIEW Larry winning the feature race on Monday 22nd January

James Owen had a superb start to our last meeting with the trainer seeing Sweet Fantasy secure the honours in the opening race of the day. Harry Cobden was on board the five-year-old who defeated market favourite Villainess by half-alength. Tour Ovalie and By The Grace finished third and fourth respectively. The following race saw an emphatic victory for Duhallow Tommy who romped to a 13 length triumph for jockey Tom Cannon and trainer Toby Lawes. The six-year-old went clear approaching the last and was never in any danger of relinquishing his lead to Clondaw Robin in second. Short-priced favourite Idy Wood made no mistake of justifying the market support in the third race last Monday. Trained by Jamie Snowden and ridden by Gavin Sheehan, the six-year-old was prominent in the early stages before being nudged along after three out. He then led two hurdles from the finish and kept on well to ensure the job was done. Diplomatic Ash finished second whilst Bob Bob Ricard finished third. Cannon then completed a double for the day on board Larry in a four-runner race for trainer Gary Moore. The veteran 11-year-old produced just enough to hold off the pressure from Jacamar who finished a neck behind in second. Tip Top Mountain and Cyclop finished third and fourth. The penultimate race of the day saw the Mark Rimell-trained I’m A Starman take the honours in the Plumpton Racecourse Meeting And Event Spaces Handicap Hurdle Race with Tom Bellamy on board. It wasn’t the most fluent run produced but he took the lead from three out and kept on well during the closing stages to see off the danger from Flemen’s Tipple in second. Ben Lilly was a further 12 lengths behind in third. Another excellent day of racing here at Plumpton was then completed with Nickelforce winning for trainer Ben Case and jockey Harry Bannister. The fiveyear-old went second and mounted a challenge two hurdles from the winning post and led at the last before going clear in the closing stages. Birdman Bob was unable to cut the deficit and had to settle for second with One Last Glance in third.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys It is a real pleasure to be sponsoring the first two races this afternoon at Plumpton. Westerninthepark holds solid bumper form, an impressive five-length winner at Stratford last April before running well in top company when finishing midfield in the Grade 2 bumper at the Grand National Meeting at Aintree. The form of his third on hurdles debut at Exeter back in October likely sets the standard here, with the fifth winning twice since, and the step up in trip should hold no concern on his first start for Anthony Charlton. Likely to be joining him near the top of the market will be Olly Murphy’s Kilbarry Hill, who has finished in the first three on all of his three starts over hurdles this term. The form of the six-year-old’s close third at Warwick on hurdles debut has worked out well and the son of Blue Bresil is beginning to look like a winner in waiting, with the tongue strap retained here. Nicky Henderson has an excellent record in maiden contests so far this term, operating at a 26% strike rate, and his mare Madame Ryder will likely come on plenty for an educational ride on hurdles bow at Lingfield in December. The six-year-old had some smart form in bumpers and should progress now up in trip on her second start over timber. Georgina Nicholls’ Musique De Fee was given a similar ride on hurdles debut at Wincanton last time when clearly in need of the experience. The five-year-old was sixth in a strong bumper at Warwick on her penultimate start though and holds plenty of potential with that run under her belt. D J Jeffreys’ Ballyvaughan Boy didn’t jump with the most fluency on his first start over hurdles when runner-up to a horse with more experience at Fakenham last time. The seven-year-old is from the same family as Grade 1-winning novice hurdler Dedigout though and progress is to be expected under Brendan Powell here. Footy’s Bridge is an interesting contender on his first start for Bill Turner, last seen chasing home a progressive next time out winner when in the hands of Gordon Elliott. He has since spent over 600

WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW

days off the track though, and both race fitness and ground are of concern on stable debut. Next up on the card is the weatherbysshop. co.uk Novices’ Handicap Chase and Duhallow Tommy could prove hard to beat under a penalty here. Although winless in three starts over hurdles, Toby Lawes’ sixyear-old came on bundles for the switch to fences last time as he ran out an impressive 13-length winner over course and distance. On the back of a wind operation, the Dylan Thomas gelding travelled powerfully through the contest, taking it up approaching the second last before extending clear from a field with an experience edge over the debutant. Ben Bromley takes over in the saddle with his handy 5lb claim and he sets the standard here if able to build on that effort. Andy Irvine’s Clondaw Robin was a well beaten second behind Duhallow Tommy in that contest, and it would be a surprise if a 2lb swing in the weights will be enough to reverse the form. The eleven-year-old has proved consistent of late, not outside of the top three in any of his chase starts this term, but he is now winless in 22 starts over fences and has a tough task on his hands here. Nick Gifford’s Cobbs Corner has shown some encouraging signs in his first three starts over fences and perhaps could have finished closer to the eventual winner if not for hanging left in the closing stages when fifth at this track last time. That was over a slightly longer trip though, and he may just find proceedings a little too quick dropped back in distance here. The main danger could perhaps come from Hughie Morrison’s Filanderer who posted a fine effort on chase debut when runner-up to a progressive type. Jumping well on the front end and looking much improved for fences, he bumped into a smart rival in the form of Libberty Hunter who has since landed a strong Cheltenham handicap and is now rated 138. The eight-year-old arrives here off an unchanged mark and must have a big chance back down in class under David Bass.

Br B g Dylan Thomas (IRE) - Ma Baker (IRE) James Best J O Mrs Ann Leftley Seamus Mullins, Amesbury T B Ronan Tynan We Do Vans S TIMEFORM VIEW Built on earlier promise to gan a first success over fences in a 23f handicap chase at Taunton last month. Failed by a whisker in his follow-up bid here (19.8f, good to soft) and he’s a big player now back up in trip. TFR##### BHA110

Br B g Saddex - Califete Royale (FR) Bryony Frost J O The Sanguiners, Mrs G Redman & B Painter Lucy Wadham, Newmarket T B Mme Jocelyne Ventrou & Mr Guy Cherel Weatherbys Hamilton LLP S TIMEFORM VIEW Won twice over hurdles in France and put it together to land 4-runner handicap chase over C&D in October. Br B g Flemensfirth (USA) - Miss Brandywell (IRE) Brendan Powell J O Mrs R. James Joe Tizzard, Sherborne T B Mr H. McDaid Coral Racing Limited S TIMEFORM VIEW Opened chase account at Wincanton in December 2022 and found just one too good when bidding to repeat the dose in this season’s renewal of the same race. Perhaps the first-time cheekpieces will help eke out a little more and, if so, he will be a danger to all. TFR####! BHA104

Br B g Midnight Legend - Wavet Harry Kimber (3) J O Mr B. J. Goldsmith Bill Turner, Sherborne T B B. J. Goldsmith Collarways S TIMEFORM VIEW Dual chase winner last season and ended that campaign with solid placed efforts at Huntingdon and Ludlow, both at around 3m. Resumes on a career-high mark but should have a part to play if he’s ready to roll following an 11-month absence. TFR###!! BHA92
