I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all here today for the running of the Juddmonte Irish Oaks. After two years of Covid restrictions, we are very much enjoying being able to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh and I hope that you have a good day. We have made changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in the Champions Hall. To watch racing, seating is also available for all patrons at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong. Today is the fourth classic of our season and in Native Trail, Homeless Songs and Westover we have already seen three very high quality winners and I am sure that today will add to that sequence. In 2022, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings an increase of two over last year - and we have an exciting programme of quality flat racing on offer throughout the year. We are very grateful to today’s sponsors - Irish EBF, Juddmonte Farms, Paddy Power, Barberstown Castle, Kildare Village, Jebel Ali Racecourse, DMG Media and Tax Assist. Your support, together with that of Horse Racing Ireland, is critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh. I would also like to thank all owners with runners here today - we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy your day and look forward to welcoming you back here at the Curragh many more times during the season. Brian Kavanagh Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 12

CURRAGH COMMENT HANS ANDERSEN bumped into a useful rival when finishing second on his debut over an extended 7f at Tipperary last month. The son of Frankel looks sure to improve for that experience and he could be hard to beat if doing so. Young Ireland has a similar profile to the selection and plenty of encouragement can be taken from his third-placed finish on debut. Al Riffa, Cairo and Nation’s Call are all newcomers who merit consideration.

SHEIKH AHMED AL MAKTOUM

AND JEBEL ALI RACECOURSE 26

Built in 1990, Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables is the vision of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum. Following specifications laid down by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the track and grandstand were constructed in 1990. A further level was added to the grandstand in 1995 to accommodate corporate hospitality guests. There is currently seating for over 2000 people. The Jebel Ali Racecourse has become known for its ‘Garden Party’ like atmosphere. Sheikh Ahmed has enjoyed considerable success on the track, racing some of the top names in thoroughbred racing over the last few years. His stable star remains Addeybb, an admirably consistent horse who has been progressive throughout his whole career. He has earnt a whopping €4,207,859.79 in prize money for connections, landing multiple Group 1’s around the globe and will always be a special horse, despite not operating at his best this season. However, new kid on the block Maljoom could be the next superstar to run in these famous colours. Not seen as a juvenile, Maljoom made an impressive debut at Doncaster but as his pedigree suggests, he would prove even better over the mile trip, scoring impressively at Kempton Park. Landing the German 2000 Guineas was impressive but his fourth in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot showed his true colours, just half a length behind Guineas winner Coroebus. 27

THE JEBEL ALI RACECOURSE AND STABLES ANGLESEY STAKES The Anglesey Stakes is run over the Anglesey Course, a unique distance to the Curragh Racecourse of 6 furlongs and 63 yards (1265m) and the oldest race in the Irish calendar to be continuously run over the same distance since it’s inauguration in 1829. The first running was won by Regulator, trained at Maddenstown. The Anglesey course and the Anglesey Stakes are named after Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey. As a Field Marshall he was second in command to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo and he led what was described as a spectacular charge of the British Heavy Cavalry, which checked and in part routed the French Army. One of the last cannon shots fired that day hit Paget in the lower right leg necessitating amputation. In recognition of his heroism he was created Marquess of Anglesey on the 4th of July 1815. Henry Paget was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in February 1828. In December of that year he wrote a letter to Patrick Curtis, the Catholic Primate of Ireland stating his belief in the need for Catholic emancipation, this opinion led to him being sacked by the British government. In 1830 a new government was formed, and he was reappointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was responsible for introducing state-aided education to 400,000 Irish children. We have no written records about the origins of the Anglesey Stakes, however it can be assumed that the inauguration of the race by the Turf Club in 1829 was in honour of Henry Paget as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Why a distance of 6 furlongs and 63 yards was decided upon is also unknown, however bestowing a starting post title as well as a race title upon the Marquess of Anglesey was an additional honour. Races run over the Anglesey course are described as a scurries, and a scurry is a unique race description to the Curragh Racecourse. Throughout the Curragh season several prestigious premier handicaps are run over this course, which is a seamless race-heritage going back to 1829 and the inauguration of the Anglesey course and distance.

28

No other racecourse in the world can boast such a unique distance with such a long history. Many a big name have won this race in the past, with Mick Kinane leadin the way as the winning most jockey. Mick won this race five times, notably with Johannesburg in 2001 and One Cool Cat in 2003. His wins in that period represented a period of dominance for Kinane and Aidan O’Brien, as they won the race for three consecutive years as a partnership, with Ontario filling the gap as the 2002 winner. Aidan O’Brien was an unstoppable force during this period, winning the race for five consecutive years, with Seamie Heffernan and Kieren Fallon winning from the saddle in 2004 and 2005 respectively. A different O’Brien is the leading trainer in the history of this race, the legendary Vincent O’Brien. The first master of Ballydoyle took his first win in 1962 with Philemon, going on to win the race with Nijinsky in 1969, Storm Bird in 1980 and Lake Como in 1987 some of the most remembered winners of the Anglesey. Ger Lyons and and Colin Keane added theirselves to the roll of honour last year with the well- supported Beauty Inspire. Despite racing freely, Colin made sure he kept this progressive juvenile up with the pace, before kicking for home inside the final furlong. The son of Mehmas showed a nice turn of foot and scored a shade cosily in the end to many favourite-backers delight.

CURRAGH COMMENT With the form of his Windsor Castle win working out well, LITTLE BIG BEAR sets a high standard in this Group 3. The step up in trip is another plus and he can hand the master of Ballydoyle a 12th win in this event. Badb outrun her odds to finish an excellent second in the Airlie Stud Stakes here last month and she must go close if building on that effort. The same can also be said of Slan Abhaile, who looked smart when easily seeing off her rivals here on debut.

CURRAGH COMMENT Coumshingaun is certainly a filly on the up and she demands respect looking to make it three wins in a row, but ANDREAS VESALIUS edges the vote. Joseph O’Brien’s gelding certainly hasn’t been disgraced at Group level in the past and looked better than ever when touched off in a 6f handicap at Naas most recently. First-time cheekpieces could potentially bring about further improvement and he looks sure to mount a bold bid. Mr Wagyu, Nordic Passage and Big Gossey are others to note in a fiercely competitive event.

THE BARBERSTOWN CASTLE SAPPHIRE STAKES Established in 2001, initially as a Listed contest called the Richard H Faught Memorial Stakes, run over the minimum trip of five furlongs, the Sapphire Stakes was renamed and reclassified as a Group 3 in 2008 before being raised to Group 2 level in 2015. Over the last two decades, there have been many top-class winners of the race, including sprinters who continue to shape the future of the breed. Respected sire Dandy Man was the 2006 winner of this contest, while Slade Power (2013) and Havana Grey (2018) have also embarked on stallion careers since their successes in the Sapphire Stakes. Only one horse has won this race more than once - Benbaun - and he did it when trained by two different trainers, four years apart. First a winner of the contest in 2005 as a four-year-old in the care of Mark Wallace and ridden by Kieren Fallon on the day, he returned at the grand old age of eight to double up under the late, great, Pat Smullen when trained by Kevin Ryan. Speaking of veteran champions, the evergreen Caspian Prince blazed to glory in 2017, also at the age of eight, in the quickest time recorded in the race since it was established. The amazing son of Dylan Thomas is still running over five furlongs to this day and after two victories in the past month, is still rated over 100 at the age of 12, an amazing feat. He was trained by British trainer, Tony Coyle, and it’s clear that horses that make the trip over the Irish Sea to compete must be

42

highly respected - nine of the last 14 winners have been trained outside Ireland. Speaking of which, two trainers have the joint best record in this race, one being Roger Charlton, who saddled Deportivo to victory in 2003 and Definightly in 2012, and the other being Mick Halford with his two wins in the Sapphire Stakes coming courtesy of the 2007 winner, Snaefell, and 2011’s champion, Invincible Ash. Johnny Murtagh is the most successful jockey in the race with three wins to his name. He rode the winners in the 2003 and 2012 for Roger Charlton and the other for Mick Halford when getting the leg up on Snaefell. 2020’s renewal of the race went the way of the Simon & Ed Crisfordtrained A’Ali and continued the good record that three-year-olds hold in this race, while Mooneista won this contest last year to further boost the record for the youngsters. It turned in to a great day for Colin Keane last year as he rode another Group winner on the day when teaming up with Jack W Davison. Mooneista travelled beautifully into the race and seemed to really appreciate the strong pace. She got a lovely tow into race and quickened up well to go clear with the runner-up Gustavus Weston and make a mockery off her 10/1 starting price.

CURRAGH COMMENT CASTLE STAR boasts a strong level of juvenile form having ended his season with a career-best second in the Middle Park behind Perfect Power at Newmarket when not getting the clearest of runs. The colt has the potential for further improvement this campaign and he gets the vote to make a winning return to action. Last year’s winner Mooneista (fourth) and Equilateral (fifth) both ran with plenty of credit in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot and the pair are likely to enter calculations, while first-time blinkers could make a difference to Last Crusader.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. PEEPING FAWN 2007 JUDDMONTE IRISH OAKS WINNER

50

A classy three-year-old, Peeping Fawn landed the Irish Oaks on what was only her second win, but she followed that up to win the Nassau Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks, both under Johnny Murtagh.

51

COOLMORE PARTNERS AND THE OAKS 52

With Snowfall hosing up last year in a remarkable Irish Oaks success, we look back at Coolmoore’s partners, Derrick Smith/ John Magnier and Michael Tabor, success in the in the Irish Oaks. This trio of owners dominate and conquer most of the big races in Britain and Ireland and enjoy a large amount of global success, with the Irish Oaks being no different. Their first success came in 2006 with Alexandrova, a bay filly out of Saddler’s Wells, a fourteen-time leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland. Landing the Oaks at Epsom in great style, she was clearly special and followed up in fanatic style to complete the remarkable double, a dream for most owners. In the same Dark Blue silks, Moonstone justified favouritism to land the 2008 renewal of the Irish Oaks, narrowly holding on from the outsider by just a length. This victory gave Aidan O’Brien a hat-trick of Irish Oaks, having won the previous year with Pepping Fawn. Although going through a dry patch, the Coolmore partners stepped it up a gear in 2014. They held the 1-2 with Bracelet fending off the late challenge of her stablemate Tapestry, with the latter subsequently landing the Yorkshire Oaks under Ryan Moore. The talented Seventh Heaven was next to strike, in the famous purple and white silks. She improved rapidly as a three-year-old and completed the Curragh-York double, both by two and three quarter lengths, oddly. Their best chance at success in the 2022 renewal looked to lie with Tuesday getting the better of Emily UpJohn again but that battle could be given to us at a later date. However, it’s hard to discount the chances of History, Emily Dickinson or Toy running a stormer to add another to their impressive tally in this famous race. 53

SNOWFALL 2021 JUDDMONTE IRISH OAKS WINNER

56

2021’s Juddmonte Irish Oaks winner, Snowfall, proved too strong for her rivals and showed her class under Ryan Moore. She produced one of the best Oaks performances of all time at Epsom, when bolting home by 16 lengths under Frankie Dettori. The superstar filly proved herself just as effective on home soil and put a good field to the sword by a further eight lengths to complete the Epsom-Curragh Double in incredible style. Aidan O’Brien then headed to York to complete the hat-trick of Oaks and she failed to disappoint again, pulling four lengths clear of the Ralph Beckett- trained Albaflora. She ended her short career contesting two Group 1’s in France, with her final outing at Ascot on Chmapions Day. Unfortunately for racing fans and connections, the superstar was put to rest after a fatal injury she sustained at her home in Ballydoyle, but there is no doubt that her legacy will remain.

CURRAGH COMMENT Magical Lagoon seemed to relish a stiffer stamina test on her latest outing when landing the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot and seeks to extend her winning streak stepping up in grade. It is likely she has more to offer, but Cazoo Oaks runner-up EMILY UPJOHN shades the vote on this occasion. This daughter of Sea The Stars needs no introduction after that unlucky Epsom defeat, which followed her five-and-a-half-length victory in the Group 3 Musidora Stakes at York in May, and she could still have more to offer. Emily Dickinson is also capable of making her presence felt.

2021 KILDARE VILLAGE LADIES DERBY WINNER

ELITE TROOPER GREY 62

A slightly surprising winner of the 2021 Kildare Village Ladies Derby, Elite Trooper Grey was given a great ride by 7lb claimer Miss Georgie Benson. It proved to be a great decision by Denise Foster to revert this horse back to the flat after some poor showing over hurdles, as the grey looked handy in the weights. Racing off a mark of 81, the partnership was much the best and the five-year-old marched home by one and a quarter lengths to give Georgie Benson her first winner on the Flat.

63

THE KILDARE VILLAGE LADIES DERBY

First run in 2013, this mile and a half handicap is often a hotly contested affair open to the best Lady Riders. Run as a normal handicap, the riders can claim allowances dependent on the amount of winners they have ridden, and some star names on the flat and over jumps have won this race in recent years. Megan Nicholls landed the race in 2019 aboard Perfect Papatino for Joseph O’Brien after Moonmeister’s disqualifiaction. Lisa O’Neill had won the previous two renewals, with Batts Rock in 2018 and Miles To Memphis in 2017 for trainers Gordon Elliott and Denise Foster respectively. Helen Mooney took the race in 2016 with Zeftan for Adrian Keatley, with Nina Carberry winning for Tommy Stack in 2015 on Tooreen Legend, while Alice Mills was victorious in 2014 with Wither Hills and French jockey Jessica Marcialis won in 2013 for

64

Adrian McGuinness aboard Beau Michael. 2020 saw Jody Townend burst onto the scene when guiding home Tony Mullins’ Princess Zoe to a five length success and she has been a superstar since. Last year saw Elite Trooper Grey return to the flat following some lacklustre performances over hurdles. Miss Georgie Benson made use of her 7lb claim and made use of the strong pace to strke late and score by one and a quarter lengths.

65

RIDERS TO WATCH RACHAEL BLACKMORE

The first female jockey to win both the Grand National and Gold Cup, Rachael Blackmore is a true inspiration to many across the globe. Although better known for her spectacular work over fences/hurdles, she can win anything she puts her mind too and is no stranger to the flat. She represents the H.H.Aga Khan partnership today, riding the Dermot Weld-trained Kazakdaria.

Other than Rachael, Julie Burke is the only rider in the field to not have a claim to aid her cause and could teach these a thing or two. Julie has 167 winners to her name and is a legend of the game, with over 1,800 rides over her long span, finding most of her success in Great Britain.

JULIE BURKE

She teams up with Kevin Thomas Coleman and looks to steer Derry Lad to victory.

JODY TOWNEND Jody exploded on to the scene in 2020 with victory on Princess Zoe and an association with Champion Trainer, Willie Mullins has yielded victories on classy types in good races under both codes, such as Great White Shark’s premier handicap win at Galway in 2019 and Grangee’s Grade 2 bumper win. She’s a superb rider and will be a threat to all today.

66

MAXINE O’SULLIVAN

Another rider best known for their exploits over the jumps, Maxine was a big part of the progress of one of Ireland’s biggest stories in 2020 in the shape of Dreal Deal, who improved almost 100lbs in the handicap in eight months. She partnered the hurdler to two handicap victories at Punchestown and Cork before he went on to win the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle. However, her biggest success was in the Foxhunter chase at Cheltenham Festival, 2019, where she took the spoils on It Came To Pass, trained by her father, Eugene.

Aine O’Connor in no stranger to the winners’ enclosure and found herself there again with a beautiful ride on the Anthony McCann-trained Rockstown Girl, who bolted home by six lengths.

AINE O’CONNOR

She often rides in the famous silks of J.P McManus, a dream come true for most jockeys, and will wear them with pride again today on Hearts Are Trumps.

GEORGIE BENSON

Georgie may not have that much experience under rules compared to some of her rivals here, but the 22-year-old certainly has spent plenty of time looking after the best - Apple’s Jade and Cause Of Causes were both in Benson’s care working at Gordon Elliott’s. She’s ridden plenty in Point-to-Points and won this contest last year. Another upset could be on the cards. 67

CURRAGH COMMENT The Gordon Elliott-trained Dartington has shown improved form when winning over hurdles on his last two starts and is a fascinating prospect back on the Flat. However, he may have to settle for minor honours behind the lightly-raced KAZAKDARIA, who shaped well when third in a competitive event here last month and has the services of the irrepressible Rachael Blackmore. Extensio caught the eye when a fast-finishing second at Leopardstown last time and should make a bold bid, while the unexposed Derry Lad, who offered plenty when third at Ballinrobe on his latest start, can also make his presence felt.

2021 - 1st Swift One 2nd Jarvis 3rd Threebagsfull (1 min. 14.3 sec.)

CURRAGH COMMENT All Things Nice is the only previous winner in the field but that success came over a mile and as a half-sister to a 10-furlong winner, she might find this trip on the sharp side. Woodcock Flight ran well over a furlong further at Down Royal, while Tanaiyla’s best form has come over shorter, so preference is for HOLDONFORDEARLIFE. Ken Condon’s gelding was third behind a subsequent Listed winner on his penultimate start and was far from disgraced when staying on in midfield at Fairyhouse last time.

This weekend represents a landmark here at the Curragh as we bid farewell to Peter Matthews who has been Ireland’s senior stipendiary steward for many years. Peter will retire at the end of July after forty years’ service to Irish racing and has overseen the stewarding of all the major races here at the Curragh in recent years. We thank Peter, who grew up locally, for his many years of service to the Curragh Racecourse and wish him and his wife Liz many happy years of retirement.
