WELCOME Welcome to Plumpton – Strong Flavours Catering Raceday Happy 140 years of Plumpton Racecourse. In 1884 the first meeting took place consisting of six races with the opening Hunters’ Selling Plate worth £37 to the winner, attracting five runners with the winner Cowslip ridden by Lewes based Harry Escott having 40 lengths to spare over the runner up. Who today will etch their name in history 140 years on! Please celebrate our 140th Birthday.

Our fourth fixture of the new year and I would like to welcome you to our Strong Flavours Catering Raceday. For those that are not aware, Strong Flavours are our caterers and have been since 2016. They have been excellent partners and alongside working closely with us, they also facilitate hospitality, fine dining, event catering and a vast array of weddings at other locations throughout the Southeast. We would highly recommend them, and we hope Nick, Graham and Leo and all their guests have a fantastic day with us today.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Mayo Wynne Baxter and Strong Flavours. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 40 runners declared across 6 races worth over £66,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race the £20,000 Class 3 The Big Sprat Novices’ Handicap Steeple Chase. Last year we saw Lord Baddesley win the feature race, trained by Chris Gordon and ridden by Tom Cannon beating Gloire D’athon by 4½ lengths with Sheldon 2¼ lengths third. Although the renewal this year only has 4 runners, the quality is strong, and I am sure will be competitive.

Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have De Barley Basket, who ran 18 times during his career winning 5 races and being placed a further 5 times. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat.

Our next three fixtures will be Monday 26th February, Monday 4th March and Monday 11th March so if you are thinking of booking tickets or hospitality for any of these days make sure you visit our website or contact one of our team now. With Easter early this year, Sunday 31st March and Monday 1st April, if you are thinking of booking make sure you do this early as this is a popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.

CUSTOMER INFORMATION Horse Care at Plumpton At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

Unauthorised Bookmaking It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

Abandonments In the event of a fixture being abandoned, refunds on admission badges and tickets purchased will be paid in the following circumstances: Abandonment before completion of the first race - full refund; Abandonment before completion of the third race - 50% refund; Abandonment thereafter - no refund.

In the event that a refund is due, refunds can not be made on racedays. To obtain a refund, please send your badge/ticket with full address details, within 28 days of the date of the race meeting to Plumpton Racecourse, Plumpton, East Sussex BN7 3AL.

Broken Glasses & Bottles Broken glasses and bottles are dangerous. In the interests of safety and the comfort of others, please do not carry drinks on to the steppings of the stand, or the areas adjacent to the parade ring or unsaddling enclosure.

No Smoking You are permitted to smoke in all outside areas, including the grandstands and balconies. Smoking is prohibited in any enclosed area. This policy includes electronic cigarettes or any other product deemed unacceptable.

BBQs Please can BBQs be extinguished 15 minutes before the start of the first race.

BETTING INFORMATION A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

Pick your winner!

There are many ways that you can pick your selection: - Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.

- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.

- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

Where to place your bet – In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

Place your bet Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place.

Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet: – Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings – Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g)

for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Things may not have gone to plan for AVILES when pulled up as a short-priced favourite over further at Fontwell, but he had been ultra consistent prior to that and is better judged on a narrow defeat at the same track in November. Gary Moore’s charge has undergone wind surgery since his latest run and that may be enough to see off the likes of three-time course winner Alto Alto and Prince Quali, who seems to be improving since arriving on these shores from France. totewin: Aviles toteeachway: Prince Quali

Runner-up in a valuable handicap at Royal Ascot last June and last seen running in the Ebor, HMS PRESIDENT looks a shrewd recruit to this sphere. Trainer Alan King has done well with these types in the past and the seven-year-old may be able to take this en route to bigger targets, with recent Warwick third Koenigsstern looking best placed to chase him home. The booking of Harry Cobden aboard Lario catches the eye and he could also land a blow. totewin: HMS President toteeachway: Koenigsstern

Three of the four contenders in this contest are last-time-out winners and the one preferred most is KOTMASK. Gary Moore’s gelding cleared away by eight lengths in this grade at Sandown last time and he now takes a step back up in distance, which he should have no issues with.

Chanceux secured a double when going in by a neck over an extended 2m at Doncaster in December and he isn’t out of it off a 4lb higher rating. Of the remainder, Ballybeen makes more appeal than Scarface after two consecutive seconds recently. totewin: Kotmask toteeachway: Chanceux

HILL OF TARA can do little wrong at present and a 15lb rise for wins at Haydock and Hereford may not be enough to prevent him completing the hat-trick. The seven-year-old seems to relish the mud and he should have too much for Hasty Parisian, who has become well handicapped but shown only mild promise for new connections. BIRDMAN BOB has filled the runner-up berth the last twice, including over track and trip on his latest outing, and he wouldn’t need to improve much to go one better on this occasion. Homme D’Un Soir was beaten eight lengths into second in this grade at Market Rasen last month and he has to be considered off a 1lb lower rating, while Kaleb could show more in first-time blinkers. totewin: Birdman Bob toteeachway: Homme D’Un Soir

This is a tricky puzzle to solve and only a tentative vote goes to LADY BERLAIS, who struck by eight lengths two starts ago at Fakenham. Dan Skelton’s mare disappointed at Sedgefield next time but she could easily bounce back to form and make it two from her last three. Top-weight Bombay Sapphire goes in first-time cheekpieces and takes a drop in trip, so she rates an interesting contender, while Majestic Jameela will find this easier than the Listed contest she was well held in at Doncaster and completes the shortlist. totewin: Lady Berlais toteeachway: Bombay Sapphire

LAST MEETING REVIEW Ilovethenightlife winning the feature race on Monday 29th January

Anthony Charlton’s six-year-old gelding travelled nicely into the contest on his first try over this trip. He did make a mistake at the last but was always doing enough to hold his rivals. Madam Ryder looked to be the beneficiary of that last minute error but Nicky Henderson’s mare was always held, she could be one for further in time.

Dunhallow Tommy continued made it two from two for the market favourites in somewhat fortunate circumstances. Toby Lawes charge was going in search of a double under a 7lb penalty and looked to be held by Clondaw Robin coming down to the last but an untimely mistake gifted the race to Ben Bromley and Dunhallow Tommy. Thankfully Clondaw Robin was up to his feet and will hopefully be back soon to break that maiden tag.

Caoilin Quinn opted to keep things simple on Junkanoo for Gary Moore.

The seven-year-old looked to have the beating of his rivals on paper and duly obliged in comfortable style by 2 1/4 lengths.

Ilovethenightlife had finished a good fifth at Cheltenham before arriving her for Joe Tizzard and looked to relish the step up in trip. She travelled easily throughout before readily asserting inside the closing stages. She’s got plenty of scope and will no doubt be one for the larger obstacles in time. Doughmore Bay finished second and was not helped by a serious blunder. A better gallop will see him to better effect.

Seamus Mullins continued his good strike rate to land our penultimate race with Morfee. The son of Ma Baker was held up in rear by James Best and jumped well throughout. Jumping the 15th they were well in command and kept on well to score from Sublime Heights. His excellent jumping should see him handle a step up in Grade no problem.

Good Lord looked to be a new horse after his wind operation and the application of a first time tongue tie. Gavin Sheehan had been in the lead since the 5th and fairly scooted away to score impressively by 11 lengths.

Glance At Me put in a fair performance to finish second but was no match for the revitalised Good Lord.

YEARS OF PLUMPTON

with Stewart Nash The year is 1884, Queen Victoria is in the 47th year of her reign and in Kirkgate Market, Leeds Michael Marks secured the lease on a market stall which was the foundation for what is now the famous chain of stores known as Marks & Spencer.

But the news in East Sussex on 11 February 1884 was about the first meeting at the new racecourse on Thomas Case’s land at Plumpton.

The entrepreneurial Case had introduced enclosed hare coursing on his land in 1876 and now realised that the site, with its adjacent railway station providing excellent access for spectators would be an ideal site for a racecourse and on Monday, 11 February 1884 the first race meeting took place.

The first meeting consisted of six races with the opening Hunters’ Selling Plate worth £37 to the winner attracting five runners with the winner Cowslip ridden by Lewes based Harry Escott having 40 lengths to spare over the runner up.

Harry Escott went on to win the third race the Selling Hurdle on Wendover who was sold at the subsequent auction to a Capt.

Sandeman.

Escott’s day was not finished however as he and Cowslip turned out again for the fourth race, The Hunters’ Steeplechase which they won by thirty lengths.

In the period from 1884 to 1915 Harry Escott was Plumpton’s leading rider with 34 winners, As they say the rest is history and so today, we are delighted to celebrate our 140th Anniversary which started with a treble for Harry Escott and two wins for Cowslip.

YEARS OF PLUMPTON

with Stewart Nash The 140th race was the Friday Selling Hunters' Chase on 10th February 1888 which was won by Chorister, ridden by A McKie, beating Billy Pepper by half a length. The winner was sold at the subsequent auction for 115 guinnies.

The 140th days racing took place on 9th January 1903 which was the first day of a two day meeting. The first two winners on the 140th day were ridden by Fred Fremantle, Ali in the Bostel Maiden Hurdle and Craddoxstown in the Worthing Selling Chase. Ali and Craddoxstown were by trained by Bob Gore who was the most successful trainer at Plumpton in the early years being credited with 101 winners! He trained from The Downs Stables at Findon which was subsequently the base for Captain Ryan Price, Josh Gifford and currently Nick Gifford.

The only person to ride 140 winners at Plumpton is AP (Tony) McCoy who rode 145 in total. His first winner on Doctor J was on 18 October 1994, his 140th on Mr Watson and his final winner on Slowfoot on 23rd February 2015. On 9th February 2009 he rode his 3,000th career winner at Plumpton on Restless d'Artaix.

The only person to train 140 winners at Plumpton is Gary Moore who has currently trained 227 winners. Gary's 140th winner was Clayton ridden by Josh Moore on 1st February 2016. His first Plumpton winner was Call Me Albi on 17th October 1995.
