I am so excited about this year’s Cornbury House Horse Trials and our sixth year promises to be the best yet! Not least because it features five fantastic ingredients from our previous five years of competition.
First, we’ve once again brought together sporting superstars – including current Olympic champions – for some truly world class eventing, with 975 competitors due to take part over the course of the five days And with our British Eventing Young Horse Championships and The Howden Way Youth classes proving more popular than ever, there’s no better place to see the next generation of equestrian heroes. Despite being a dry summer, David Evans and Adrian Ditcham and their teams have worked flat out with Mark Juniper and others from the Cornbury estate to ensure the best conditions for horses and riders.
Second, courtesy of Cornbury and neighbouring farms, we’ve put together another spectacular showcase of locally sourced food and drink. And, after a magnificent debut last year, the Endless Lunch at Cornbury by Mirabeau, is back by popular demand.
Third, we’re making sure there’s fun for the entire family Our ‘Wildings’ activity area gives kids (and their parents) the chance to enjoy willow weaving and clay model making. Meanwhile, the adults will relish the return of the Cornbury Village – a hand-picked selection of bespoke, independent brands – giving them the opportunity to sample the best of what our great local businesses have to offer Evening entertainment and DJs will all add to that ‘festival vibe’.
Fourth, we’re proud to have a roster of exceptional partners bringing our event to life. We are welcoming back the likes of Brown Advisory, Clarence Court Eggs, Fortnum & Mason, Mirabeau, Markel, Pragnell, Pol Roger, Volare and WNS. And we’re delighted to add a new set of sponsors including Aston Martin Works and Accenture UK. It’s also worth walking the course to see the bespoke fences brought to you by Hawkstone and The White Company. You’ll see a full list of our amazing partners on the back cover of this programme The magic of Cornbury would not be possible without their incredible support!
And fifth, we’re making the most of the spectacular surroundings of Cornbury Park. And this year you’ll be able to head up to our new area, Variety Wood – offering panoramic views across the cross-country course and down to the lakes and park. Here you can watch all the action unfolding on the big screen before heading to the Pragnell Water Feature – located at the very highest point of the course – for a glass of fizz at the Pol Roger Lodge
Yet what makes Cornbury 2025 unique is that we’ve added another ingredient to the mix –our Racehorse to Eventer Challenge Cup with an unprecedented £50,000 prize fund. I am delighted that Arena Racing Company (ARC), which operates 16 racecourses in the UK –will be its sponsors for the next five years. The class was the brainchild of Jayne McGivern, who shares my passion for both sports and wanted to create a very special class for former racehorses as well as those thoroughbreds who didn’t make it to the track. And now, for the first time at Cornbury, you can watch those magnificent equine athletes in action as they compete as eventers. I can’t wait!
Creating an event like Cornbury House Horse Trials is truly a labour of love and not just for my family but for the immense supporting cast of sponsors, volunteers, officials, contractors and event organisers. So, I want to give a huge heartfelt thank you to all of them. Without the wonderful efforts of those who give up their time for free over the five days – whether the fence judges across the site or the crossing management team, whether those serving our guests food and drink or helping park cars – none of this would be possible. Thanks to their amazing efforts there are now six sensational reasons why this year’s event will be both a spectacular showcase of sport and the perfect culmination of a magnificent summer

HORSE TRIALS, or “eventing” as it is most commonly known, is a comprehensive test of all-round horsemanship involving three phases.
The sport was originally developed as a military event, drawing on the requirements for an officer’s charge – steadiness on parade, the ability to cross the country at speed in battle and the fitness needed to carry on duties the following day. The modern sport has evolved over the years, with the emphasis now focused on the ability of the rider to train the horse and of the pair to form a partnership In order to succeed both horse and rider must be skilled in all of the three modern-day disciplines – dressage, cross-country and showjumping.
Dressage: This is the first element of eventing, the skills needed forming part of
the basic training of any horse These skills are equally important for the cross-country and showjumping phases, and therefore dressage is a vital part of eventing.
The object of dressage is to develop the physique and suppleness of the horse Ridden in a rectangular arena, the dressage judges or Ground Jury (for international classes) are looking for balance, suppleness, fluency and “free forward movement”.
The horse and rider combination will perform a set dressage test which will be given marks out of 10 for each movement; these are then totalled and shown as a percentage, before being converted to penalties. The leader after the dressage phase will therefore be the horse and rider with the lowest mark on the scoreboard.
Showjumping: This is the next phase in short-format international competitions and at national one-day events is showjumping. The exception to this at Cornbury House Horse Trials is the ARC Racehorse to Eventer Challenge Cup, in which the competitors showjumping last in reverse order Completing the course of knock-down poles, the showjumping element requires carefulness, precision, suppleness and a degree of bravery. There is a set optimum time for completing the course, and penalties are awarded for exceeding this.
Knocking down an obstacle
First refusal, run-out or circle at obstacle
Second refusal, run-out at obstacle 8
Fall of rider or horse Elimination
Jumping an obstacle in the wrong order Elimination
Starting before bell Elimination Every second in excess of the time allowed 1
Exceeding 24 penalties during test Compulsory retirement
Cross-country: This is the final phase of eventing is the cross-country, designed to test the rider’s judgement of speed and the accuracy of their riding, and the horse’s boldness, stamina and athleticism. The combination must tackle a course consisting of a wide variety of fixed, solid cross-country obstacles over varying natural terrain.
Penalties are awarded for mistakes at fences and mistakes are only penalised when they occur while a horse is jumping or attempting to jump a numbered obstacle. Time-penalties are given for exceeding the optimum time
Fault / Error
Per second over the optimum time
Exceeding the time limit (twice the optimum time) Elimination
First refusal, run-out or circle at obstacle 20
Second refusal, run-out or circle at same obstacle 40
Third refusal, run-out or circle at same obstacle Elimination
Fall of rider or horse Elimination Error of course not rectified Elimination
Failure to pass between both flags on an obstacle 15 Activating a frangible device 11 Dangerous riding 25
There are also a number of reasons a competitor may be eliminated, which concern the safety of riders, horses and spectators.

A highlight of Cornbury House Horse Trials 2025 is our newest class - the Arena Racing Company Racehorse to Eventer Challenge Cup
Racehorse and event horse owner Jayne McGivern has long dreamed of a bigmoney class for former racehorses at a high-profile event to encourage both top event riders and amateurs to recognise the talents these horses have for eventing. David Howden has helped her make this a reality and, with the generous backing of Britain’s largest racecourse operators, the Arena Racing Company, there has been a huge buzz around the ARC Racehorse to Eventer Challenge Cup and its £45,000 first prize.
The class is running at Open Novice level - using a CCI2*-S dressage test in its first year, with hopes of upgrading it to Open Intermediate in the future.
Thoroughbreds are, of course, very well suited for eventing at all levels, particularly as speed, stamina, bravery and temperament become more important as you head towards the top of the sport. They used to dominate eventing, but they have become less fashionable in recent
years with the rise of the showjumping and dressage-bred warmbloods, particularly in Europe We hope this class will help bring horses bred for racing into the spotlight once again. After all, Henrietta Knight once said that Best Mate would have won Badminton if his career had been eventing, rather than racing - the attributes of a top-class horse are similar across the disciplines.
It is really exciting that a major player in the racing industry like ARC applauds Jayne and David’s endeavours and wants to help support the future careers of horses that have raced. Cornbury House Horse Trials has assembled quite an extraordinary portfolio of sponsors, many of whom have had no involvement with eventing before, and it is great to welcome ARC into the fold in a five-year deal for what is one of our headline classes this year.
We hope this class and the publicity around it and around David Howden’s own Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme - which recently announced an alliance with Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) will showcase ex-racehorses’ suitability for eventing and the versatility and adaptability of the thoroughbred.
The ARC Thoroughbred to Eventer Challenge Cup will take place on 11, 12 and 13 September, with cross-country on Friday 12 and the final showjumping phase in Cornbury’s spectacular main arena on Saturday, 12 September - which happens to be St Leger day.

She took time to recover and retrain and the first few years she spent a lot of time planting herself and refusing to do anything. But then, having worked through it, she took to her new life really well and has beencompeting with success

For five seasons Hollie, who worked at the race yard, rode Candy developing a special bond with him to where she called him her ‘partner in crime’. When he left racing he found himself in a sorry state before Hollie managed to track him down and buy him, which she did in June 2024, for herself Their reunion was an emotional one!

Ardlair has been with Hollie for four years and is being ridden by Evie Lawson as Hollie is riding Kimberlite Candy
He took time to decompress after racing and grow into himself before spending lots of time hacking and taking mini-holidays to digest his retraining education.

2. The Horse Trials Organiser, named in the programme undertakes to run the competition in accordance with the British Eventing rules and guidance.
3. The Horse Trials Organiser is required to ensure all Chief Stewards appointed by the Organiser have received, read and understood the relevant section of the guidance to ensure they are aware of the requirements and standards for their area of responsibility
4. The Health and Safety Adviser (primarily) and the Organiser are required to ensure the area of competition and those accessible to the public and other Officials are (so far as is reasonably practicable) subject to a risk assessment and that this, and a record of the actions taken, is documented in the events Health and Safety Plan.
1. Stewards, judges and officials are briefed in their duties and provided with the relevant equipment to carry out their duties.
2. They are required to bring to the attention of the Health and Safety Adviser any concerns they have for the Health, Safety and Welfare of the public and the officials.

4. The BE Technical Advisor, BE Steward or Health and Safety Adviser are required to ensure the Officials are properly briefed in their duties and area properly equipped.
All reasonable and practical steps are taken to ensure the health, safety and welfare of those attending the event Spectators are to follow signage, stringing and to follow designated routes and to use the designated crossing points so as not to inadvertently stray into the path of oncoming horses. They should listen for the fence judges whistle blasts warning of horses on the cross-country course and the public address announcements.
All contractors working at the Event are required to observe best working practice, comply with all legislation relevant to their business and take all reasonable and practical steps to safeguard their employees and those attending.
All exhibitors are responsible for the safety of their own stands and the risks that they may pose to other persons within the allocated space or immediate surrounding areas. This is subject to monitoring by the Health and Safety Steward and Organiser
The emergency services at the event include the doctors, ambulances, vet and fence repair personnel. They have access to all parts of the site and can be quickly contacted through any steward, judge or official – most immediately through their radio Accidents involving horses and competitors are well catered for and the appropriate officials are constantly ready to report these as they occur and to call for appropriate emergency services.
15. Emergencies not connected with the competition may be dealt with by the emergency services (eg the fire brigade). Telephones for such emergency calls are located at the information point at the log cabin.
Except for the negligence of the Organiser and his or their agents or others for whom in law they are responsible, the Organiser does not accept responsibility in respect of any accident, illness or disease caused to or suffered by any horse, owner, competitor, spectator, sponsor and others present at the site of the Event and their property and accoutrements.
The Organiser has the power to:
i. Cancel or divide any class or transfer competitors between sections of a class
ii. Alter the advertised times
iii. Refuse any entry
The Organiser of this Event has taken responsible precautions to ensure the health and safety of everyone present. For these measures to be effective, everyone must themselves take all reasonable precautions to prevent accidents and must comply with any instructions given by the Organiser, Officials and Stewards. Organisers require all drivers and all passengers on motorcycles and ATV’s to wear a suitable head protector and must not allow passengers to be carried on such vehicles (unless designed or specifically adapted for the purpose). Please remember Cornbury House Horse Trials currently enjoys and relies very heavily on the support and goodwill of the local community and surrounding villages. Please drive carefully through the villages and take all litter home
