ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS A competitive event in which preference is for the admirable 11-year-old COPPER KNIGHT, who made an encouraging return to action when third at Beverley a fortnight ago. He is 2lb out of the handicap here, but is on the same mark as when narrowly denied in this 12 months ago. Jer Batt hit the frame in a similar contest at Musselburgh recently and is respected. The returning Balmoral Lady was progressive on testing ground last season but she is versatile and cannot be underestimated.

It was a promising debut performance from FRIO, who picked up well in the latter stages to grab third at Musselburgh last month. The son of Havana Grey should be more streetwise this time around and although drawn high, could use that experience to adopt a more prominent role. Luminare fetched 100,000gns as a yearling and she’s of deﬁnite interest with Ryan Moore booked, while Somebody, who struck the woodwork at Southwell recently, could also have a say.

ILLINOIS took the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot last year and signed off his 2024 campaign with victory in a Group 2 at Longchamp. Aidan O’Brien’s colt sets the standard with a rating of 116 and he could prove tough to beat. Al Qareem is a previous Group 2 winner and showed his wellbeing when scoring in Listed company last month, so it would be no surprise to see him have a say. Absurde managed ﬁfth in the Melbourne Cup when last seen on the Flat and is another to take seriously. TOTEWIN: ILLINOIS

El Burhan took a step forward on each of his four starts last year, with his most recent effort coming when making the frame in a hot nursery at Goodwood. He sports a ﬁrst-time tongue-tie after being gelded during the winter and ought to have a say, but SEX ON FIRE gets the nod. Richard Spencer’s three-year-old won at Haydock a couple of weeks ago and is just 7lb higher. High On Hope is another to note. TOTEWIN: SEX ON FIRE

Aidan O’Brien has an outstanding record in this contest, winning six of the seven previous renewals, and he looks to have yet another big chance with MOUNT KILIMANJARO. The Siyouni colt chased home stablemate Twain in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud on his ﬁnal start as a juvenile but was turned over as a short-priced favourite on his return at Dundalk in March. He brings the best form to the table though and will be tough to beat if bouncing back. Mirabeau, Calla Lagoon and High Stock could all be involved. TOTEWIN: MOUNT KILIMANJARO

Liberty Coach has landed stall one on his return to action, but he resumes from 4lb higher than when he signed off 2024 with an all-the-way win at Redcar. Furthermore, a wider draw isn’t insurmountable and the well-handicapped AUSTRIAN THEORY makes plenty of appeal following his second over a mile at Redcar a month ago. LAST YEAR’S WINNERS The second day of the 2024 Boodles May Festival, Ladies Day, included the Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes and the tote.co.uk Supporting Racing Ormonde Stakes The opening race of the day, The CAA Stellar Handicap Stakes, was won in thrilling fashion by the Robert Cowell-trained Democracy Dilemma. Tom Marquand was on board the four-year-old son of Cotai Glory as the pair won by a neck ahead of Copper Knight. Democracy Dilemma gathered a lot of support in the market and he justified going off as the favourite. Teej A stole the show in the following race, the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes, winning by two-and-a-quarter lengths to Rashabar for trainer Karl Burke and jockey Clifford Lee. Teej A led briefly in the opening stages before waiting for room when over two furlongs from the finish. Lee then asked for more from the filly and she soon answered the question, taking the lead inside the final furlong. It was a convincing win for Never So Brave in the Halliwell Jones Handicap Stakes. The son of No Nay Never, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, took a keen hold before being positioned in third when four furlongs out. Jockey Ryan Moore then switched right over a furlong out before taking the lead.

The three-year-old kept on well to ensure there wasn’t any danger of relinquishing his lead to Witness Stand in second. Ryan Moore soon completed a double, winning on board Capulet (now Romantic Thor) in the Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes for trainer Aiden O’Brien. Capulet made all and was ridden from a furlong out. He stayed on well to see off the danger from Bracken’s Laugh. Jayarebe was popular in the market and went off as favourite but was unable to justify that support, ﬁnishing third,

three-and-a-quarter lengths behind Bracken’s Laugh. The tote.co.uk Supporting Racing Ormonde Stakes was won in emphatic fashion by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Point Lonsdale. That success made it a double for O’Brien and a treble for jockey Ryan Moore. Point Lonsdale went second over two furlongs out before being ridden clear inside the closing stages to win by an impressive six lengths ahead of Arrest. The penultimate race of day two was won by Tony Montana by half-a-length for jockey David Egan and trainer Michael Bell. The four-year-old was prominent early on before going second two furlongs out. It was then a battle between him and Loyal Touch inside the ﬁnal furlong but it was the former who came out on top in a tense ﬁnish.

Point Lonsdale

Day two was then completed with Fouroneohfever winning the Camden Town Brewery Handicap Stakes for jockey William Buick and trainer George Boughey. Fouroneohfever was prominent two furlongs out before taking the lead. He then kept on well to secure the honours by three-quarters of a length ahead of Contacto.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a ﬁve furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Capulet

Last year’s renewal of the Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes was won in thrilling fashion by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Capulet. Capulet, now named Romantic Thor, edged left in the early stages of the race but made all in this Listed Race. The son of Justify was never clear at any stage, being tested by the three remaining challengers in the contest - Bracken’s Laugh, market favourite Jayarebe and God’s Window. There had been a lot of support for Jayarebe in the market but the Brian Meehan-trained colt weakened inside the ﬁnal 110 yards. Bracken’s Laugh raced in third but was always in touch with the leaders at that stage, before attempting to mount a serious challenge. The Richard Hughestrained colt pressed Capulet all the way but was unable to ﬁnd any extra when approaching the closing stages.

God’s Window, trained by John and Thady Gosden was slowly into stride and swerved sharply left, losing ground soon after. He raced in last for the majority of the race before joining the remainder of the ﬁeld when two furlongs out. However, he soon weakened over a furlong from home and was never in contention to challenge the remaining three. Once again, it was O’Brien who left his mark on proceedings, ensuring a third victory in a row and six in the last seven in this contest. Naturally, Ryan Moore was on board and the pair produced a strong performance to fend off the danger from Bracken’s Laugh. As mentioned, Capulet was pestered all the way and was not given the opportunity to relax. That resulted in a thrilling climax to the 2024 Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes.

TODAY is Dee day. And that’s especially true for the owners, trainers and jockeys of any of the runners in this afternoon’s HomeServe Dee Stakes who still harbour Classic aspirations. With just over three weeks until the Derby and Oaks at Epsom, the time for pretenders to stake a claim is now. First staged in 1813, the Dee Stakes is the third and final Classic trial to be run during the Boodles May Festival. While the Chester Vase for colts and Cheshire Oaks for fillies, both of which took place here yesterday, have emerged as more influential trials for Epsom in recent times, the Dee Stakes remains a valuable Listed race in its own right, and one steeped in tradition. The last horse to win the Dee Stakes and the Epsom Derby in the same season is Kris Kin in 2003. Kris Kin finished only 15th on his debut before winning an ordinary Doncaster maiden in two runs in the autumn of 2002. Such

uninspiring form saw him sent off the unconsidered 20-1 outsider of just four runners for the Dee Stakes. Big Bad Bob had won his final four races as a two-year-old and was a red-hot 4-9 favourite to make it five. Despite being officially rated 20lb superior to Kris Kin, Big Bad Bob had no answer to the devastating burst of speed jockey Fergal Lynch conjured from Kris Kin inside the furlong.Reigning five-time champion jockey Keiren Fallon was on board Big Bad Bob that day. But as No1 rider to Kris Kin’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute, Irishman Fallon took over for Kris Kin’s victory at Epsom, where he again swooped late to overtake The Great Gatsby, and deny his trainer Aidan O’Brien a third consecutive Derby following wins for Galileo and High Chaparral. Fallon had earlier steered Oath to the same Dee Stakes-Epsom Derby double in 1999. After winning the Dee Stakes by five lengths, Oath then provided his trainer Sir Henry

Cecil with the last of his four Derby victories at Epsom, and Fallon his ﬁrst. Other notable modern-day winners include Pentire (1995) and Sir Harry Lewis (1987). Along with Teenoso, Pentire was arguably the best horse Newmarket trainer Geoff Wragg handled during a 25-year career. Following an undistinguished two-year-old season, Pentire developed into a top-class middledistance performer at three, winning six of his seven races in 1995, including the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes. In the other, he lost out by only a neck to that season’s Epsom Derby and subsequent Arc winner Lammtarra in the Group 1 King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot – a race Pentire would himself win 12 months later. Sir Harry Lewis is one of a record 11 Dee Stakes winners to be trained by Barry Hills. After his 1987 victory here, under French-based American rider Cash Asmussen, Sir Harry Lewis went on to land the Irish Derby – a race delayed for 50 minutes by a hoax bomb warning – and, in turn, give Ulster jockey John Reid his only triumph in his home Derby. In recent years, Aidan O’Brien has extended his May Festival dominance to this race as well. The Irish trainer having scored in six of the last seven renewals of this contest, most recently with Capulet who kept on well to score here last year. O RM OND E ST AKE S Point Lonsdale

ORMONDE, who won all 16 races in his career including the English Triple Crown in 1886, was widely regarded as the greatest horse of the 19th Century. To some, he’s arguably the greatest racehorse to have lived. Either way, his legacy has been celebrated here at Chester since 1936, when the Ormonde Stakes was staged for the first time. Foaled in 1883, Ormonde was a son of the prolific winning racemare Lily Agnes, after whom the opening race of the Boodles May Festival is named. Ormonde won all three races he contested as a two-year-old, including the Criterion and Dewhurst Stakes in the space of only 48 hours. He won his first Classic, the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, on his first run of his three-year-old campaign; then added a second when he landed the Epsom Derby on his next start. Further wins followed in the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, en route to Doncaster, where his victory in the St Leger saw Ormonde become only the fourth horse in history to win the Triple Crown of British Classics. Ormonde

won the Champion Stakes in 1886, and the Rous Memorial and a second Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on consecutive days during his ﬁnal season in 1887. That last-named race proved the most challenging of Ormonde’s career. Although he eventually mastered old adversary Minting in an epic duel, a wind ailment he inherited from his dam Lily Agnes had become so acute it was said his “choking ﬁght for breath could be heard all over the racecourse”. Ormonde was retired by his owner Hugh Grosvenor, the 1st Duke of Westminster, to stand at his Eaton Hall stud, just south of Chester. Much was anticipated of Ormonde’s second career as stallion, but fertility issues meant he sired only eight foals that would race in Britain. Despite this, one of them, Orme, proved a champion in his own right, winning a string of top races including the Eclipse twice, the Sussex Stakes and the Champion Stakes. Fittingly, the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes has been won by numerous top-class horses down the decades.

For The Grace & For The Glory

From the esteemed stayer Alycidon (1949) and Tulyar (1952) during its early days, through to Indiana (1965), who was also a Chester Vase winner, and Classic winners Blakeney (1970), Crow (1977) and Teenoso (1984). Its most celebrated winners of recent times include Daliapour (2000), Harbinger (2010), St Nicholas Abbey (2011) and Brown Panther (2014), who was jointly-owned by former Liverpool, Manchester United and England footballer Michael Owen, and trained locally at Manor House Stables by Tom Dascombe. There was also a Royal success in 2016 with Dartmouth, owned by Her Majesty The Queen and a record sixth winner in this race for trainer Sir Michael Stoute. Lester Piggott, Pat Eddery and Ryan Moore are the leading jockeys with ﬁve victories apiece, while there have been three dual winners – Sovrango (1962, 1963), Shambo (1993, 1994) and St Expedit (2001, 2002). Last years renewal of this race saw the Aidan O’Brientrained Point Lonsdale cruise to a six-and-a-half length victory. That win saw O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore make it three wins in the last six renewals.

Point Lonsdale

The 2024 Ormonde Stakes proved to be an exciting and thoroughly impressive contest, with Point Lonsdale stealing the show with an mighty fine performance. The race, a Group 3 event, saw the five-year-old gelding put in a stunning display of class and determination over the 1m5½f distance. From the start, the pace was set by Deauville Legend, who looked to dominate the early stages of the race, but Point Lonsdale, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden expertly by Ryan Moore, showed patience in his positioning. Despite being kept in a comfortable stalking position behind the leader, he always looked full of running and ready to pounce. As they approached the business end of the race, Point Lonsdale made his move with a sharp turn of foot that quickly saw him take command. His finishing kick was sensational, drawing clear in the final furlong to win with a huge margin of six and a half lengths.

LAS T Y EAR’S OR MONDE S TA KES It was a truly dominant performance that highlighted his impressive stamina and sharpness, qualities that make him such a threat in the top-tier middle-distance contests. Arrest, trained by John and Thady Gosden, also ran a creditable race, finishing in second place. Despite lacking the explosive speed of the winner, Arrest stayed on well and showed good resolve to claim the runner-up spot, a solid effort that should set him up for future contests. Meanwhile, Alsakib, who was held up in the rear, produced a late surge to grab third, adding some intrigue to the finish and showing that there’s plenty of potential in his future runs as well. Point Lonsdale certainly justified going off as the favourite in what was a very convincing victory for O’Brien and Moore.

7. Customers in the County Stand are required to observe a strict dress code. Gentlemen are required to wear a suit jacket, collar and tie. Ladies are required to wear smart dress. No jeans or tracksuits are allowed. These standards of dress also apply to patrons in all hospitality and restaurant facilities. 8. Please observe the designated no drinking areas. Food and alcoholic beverages cannot be brought into any Racecourse enclosure except the Open Course. 9. Gambling and the consumption of alcoholic beverages by Racegoers under the age of 18 are strictly prohibited. 10. All unauthorised photography and any ﬂash photography is strictly prohibited. Racedays at Chester are attended by the media and given coverage on TV, radio, online and in print. From time-to-time, we also capture images and moving video of racegoers attending a day at Chester Racecourse. Footage and videos can often be used on social media or in promotional materials the racecourse produces. By entering the racecourse, attendees are accepting they may appear in such coverage. Each Attendee will give any additional consents or waivers required for the unrestricted lawful use of any coverage (if any) without request for payment or imposing any other conditions. 11. Flags, banners and other articles and any behaviour such as drunkenness, abusive conduct, singing or shouting which may constitute an annoyance to spectators or distract or frighten the horses are prohibited. 12. No dogs are allowed anywhere on the Racecourse (with the exception of aid dogs) and must not be left in vehicles. 13. Transfers between enclosures may be possible on the day, subject to availability. 14. Parking or setting down on the side is prohibited other than at official car parks. 15. Lost or stolen badges will not be replaced. 16. Hospitality badges are sold on the understanding that no money in respect of the unused badges will be reimbursed. 17. In the event of abandonment at any time on the day of racing, there will be no refund in respect of Box, Room or Chalet hire charges.

18. In the event of abandonment before Racing, or up to the ‘Weighed-In’ of the ﬁrst race there will be a refund of badge/ ticket and parking costs. In the event of an abandonment after the ‘Weighed-In’ of the ﬁrst race up to the ‘Weighed-In’ of the third race or nominated feature race whichever is later there will be a 50% refund of badge/ticket and car parking costs. In the event of abandonment thereafter there will be no refunds. No cash returns to be paid on the day. All refunds to be administered after the meeting by post. Where the customer is entitled (pursuant to this clause 19) to any refund, in order to qualify for such refund the customer must follow the procedure listed below. (i) Make a note of the reference numbers of all badge/ ticket and car park labels. (ii) Send the badges/tickets and/or labels along with a covering letter stating the full name and address of the sender and if different from that of the sender, the full name and address of the purchaser of the badges/tickets or labels to: Chester Race Company Limited, The Racecourse, Chester CH1 2LY. To be valid, requests for refunds must be received in writing within one month of the abandoned Raceday. The Company shall have no responsibility or liability of any nature in respect of any refund request received after that time. 19. All persons visiting the Racecourse are admitted to these Regulations and to the Rules of Racing.
