A ND RACE COURSE BOO KMAKERS

HOW TO PLACE A BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER WAYS TO BET

WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)

EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake.

STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• 4 or fewer runners - win only

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval.

In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure.

The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.

Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY

It’s hard to rule any out, especially with six last-time-out winners in the field. Slight preference is for DAPPER VALLEY, who warrants respect off a pair of recent wins, while Stratusnine might not be far away either.

WIN: DAPPER VALLEY

DANGER: STRATUSNINE

Representing last year’s winning connections, DONEGAL ROSE wasn’t beaten far on debut at Leicester and should improve for the experience. Undercover Affair rates the main threat, while Paper View also commands respect under top jockey Sean Levey.

WIN: DONEGAL ROSE

DANGER: UNDERCOVER AFFAIR

Aidan O’Brien has won seven of the last nine renewals, and it’s no surprise to see CONSTITUTION RIVER a warm order to continue that record. He has the strongest juvenile form and shaped as if this trip would suit. Morshdi may lack his class but has the benefit of a run, while Flushing Meadows can keep improving as a three-year-old, also arrives match-fit, and isn’t to be discounted.

WIN: CONSTITUTION RIVER

DANGER: BAY OF BRILLIANCE

This prestigious staying race can go the way of JAN BRUEGHAL, who can be forgiven for bumping into top-class rival Calandagan on his last two starts. Last year’s winner, Illinois, needs to find 9lbs with him on ratings. Al Qareem, who has the benefit of a run, could make the frame.

WIN: JAN BRUEGHEL

DANGER: AL QAREEM

The form of FACTUAL’s Newcastle win in December is working out well, with the third winning next time. An opening handicap mark of 86 looks workable and he’s had the benefit of two runs this year McMurray was a rapid improver last term but needs to prove his sharpness, while I’m Just Ken is respected on handicap debut for the local Hugo Palmer yard.

WIN: FACTUAL

DANGER: I’M JUST KEN

This competitive handicap is hard to assess, but marginal preference can be afforded to top weight CELEBORN. Completing just one start in 2025, connections have had an interrupted time but his 2yo form is strong and he looked a top-class prospect when winning at Epsom on his last start a year ago. Let’s Dream ended the year on a high with a nineteen-runner success at York and can go close again here under Hector Crouch.

WIN: CELEBORN

DANGER: LET’S DREAM

A chance can be taken on Karl Burke’s second string HIGH STORM, who shaped as though a mile and a half would suit when mid-division at Newmarket last time. Moment Of Light and Mythical Bay have the form to get involved, while Be The Standard boasts strong novice/maiden form and is interesting over this trip second time in a handicap.

WIN: HIGH STORM

DANGER: BE THE STANDARD

RO MAN DAY

ER

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS

The second day of the 2025 Boodles May Festival, Ladies’ Day, included the Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes and the Ladbrokes Big Value You Can Bet On Ormonde Stakes.

The opening race of the day, The CAA Stellar Handicap Stakes, gave Oisin Murphy his first win of the day on the Hugo Palmer-trained Roman Dragon. Frontrunner Rosenpur set a fast pace yet the winner remained in touch with the lead and displayed his impressive turn of foot in the final 110yds to burst through the field and seize victory at 8/1.

Oisin Murphy racked up a double in short fashion in the second race, the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes. Perched on the Ubettabelieveit gelding Tricky Tel, the pair pressed Davvy in lead before sweeping to an unmatchable lead off the home turn, returning a three and a half length victory over the field of ten.

Having bided their time for long enough, it was time for the Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore Chester dream team to swing into action in the next, the Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes, fielding Mount Kilimanjaro at evens. The French-bred son of Siyouni broke well and kept in touch with leaders, yet looked at one point to lose concentration and drop back in the field. When asked the question

however, he justified his favour with a relentless run down the outside to reel in his rivals High Stock and Great David, denying Oisin Murphy a treble in the process.

The Ballydoyle show continued in the next, the Ladbrokes Big Value You Can Bet On Ormonde Stakes, won in emphatic fashion by Illinois. Trailing frontrunner Al Qareem all round, Moore and his mount bided their time until the final turn, when with textbook timing they took advantage of a mistake by the leader and sprang to the head of the field. Briefly challenged by the

Paddy The Squire

dual-purpose hurdler-turned-flatrunner Absurde, Illinois dug deep to find second wind and secure the win.

The next race of day two finally gave a look in to other trainers in the seven and a half furlong Louise Keegan Handicap Stakes. Jumping up the inside, the George Bougheytrained El Burhan was quickly swallowed by the pack and pressed against the rail. Making his way up the field methodically, Jim Crowley took advantage of finally getting clear to switch his mount on in the final 110yds and held off all rivals to clinch the win, in a tightly contested finish that looked more like a war charge for minor placings.

The penultimate race was the Halliwell Jones Handicap. Amid a field of fourteen, Paddy The Squire broke keenly but was reminded to

settle down in the hands of Andrew Mullen. Biding time in a packed midfield, the well-backed gelding was eventually pushed to lead a furlong out and, despite challengers, kept on to take the win and close the day in thrilling fashion.

Ladies’ Day was seen out by the Oxford Natural Handicap Stakes, run over a mile and four furlongs. The favourite, Lady Vivian, broke strongly and despite carrying top weight pressed a strong tempo in lead that her rivals could not meet. The last two furlongs became merely a formality as once Hector Crouch said go, she switched on the speed and left the rest of the field in the dust for a storming finish to the day’s racing.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a five andf a half furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

TODAY is Dee day And that’s especially true for the owners, trainers and jockeys of any of the runners in this afternoon’s HomeServe Dee Stakes who still harbour Classic aspirations. With just over three weeks until the Derby and Oaks at Epsom, the time for pretenders to stake a claim is now.

First staged in 1813, the Dee Stakes is the third and final Classic trial to be run during the Boodles May Festival. While the Chester Vase for colts and Cheshire Oaks for fillies, both of which took place here yesterday, have emerged as more influential trials for Epsom in recent times, the Dee Stakes remains a valuable Listed race in its own right, and one steeped in tradition.

The last horse to win the Dee Stakes and the Epsom Derby in the same season is Kris Kin in 2003. Kris Kin finished only 15th on his debut before winning an ordinary Doncaster maiden in two runs in the autumn of 2002. Such

uninspiring form saw him sent off the unconsidered 20-1 outsider of just four runners for the Dee Stakes. Big Bad Bob had won his final four races as a two-year-old and was a red-hot 4-9 favourite to make it five.

Despite being officially rated 20lb superior to Kris Kin, Big Bad Bob had no answer to the devastating burst of speed jockey Fergal Lynch conjured from Kris Kin inside the furlong.Reigning five-time champion jockey Keiren Fallon was on board Big Bad Bob that day. But as No1 rider to Kris Kin’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute, Irishman Fallon took over for Kris Kin’s victory at Epsom, where he again swooped late to overtake The Great Gatsby, and deny his trainer Aidan O’Brien a third consecutive Derby following wins for Galileo and High Chaparral.

Fallon had earlier steered Oath to the same Dee Stakes-Epsom Derby double in 1999. After winning the Dee Stakes by five lengths, Oath then provided his trainer Sir Henry

Capulet

Cecil with the last of his four Derby victories at Epsom, and Fallon his first.

Other notable modern-day winners include Pentire (1995) and Sir Harry Lewis (1987). Along with Teenoso, Pentire was arguably the best horse Newmarket trainer Geoff Wragg handled during a 25-year career. Following an undistinguished two-year-old season, Pentire developed into a top-class middledistance performer at three, winning six of his seven races in 1995, including the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes.

In the other, he lost out by only a neck to that season’s Epsom Derby and subsequent Arc winner Lammtarra in the Group 1 King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot – a race Pentire would himself win 12 months later.

Sir Harry Lewis is one of a record 11 Dee Stakes winners to be trained by Barry Hills. After his 1987 victory here, under French-based American rider Cash Asmussen, Sir Harry Lewis went on to land the Irish Derby – a race delayed for 50 minutes by a hoax bomb warning – and, in turn, give Ulster jockey John Reid his only triumph in his home Derby.

In recent years, Aidan O’Brien has extended his May Festival dominance to this race as well. The Irish trainer having scored in seven of the last eight renewals of this contest, most recently with Mount Kilimanjaro who shined in a strong field for victory last year.

Mount Kilimanjaro (L)

Last year’s renewal of the Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes extended Aidan O’Brien’s dominance over the May Festival, with a thrilling win by Mount Kilimanjaro.

Ballydoyle sent two out to the race amid a strong field of seven. Isambard Brunel, an American-bred Justify colt, would seem to have planned to act as pacemaker for his stablemate, breaking strongly and jumping to an early lead.

However, Great David broke wide under Tom Marquand, and was steered to cut across on the first turn to take up the lead. The son of Ribchester raced strongly and forced the field to fall in quick behind him to not be left in the dust. Isambard Brunel was joined by Andrew Balding’s High Stock a length and a half on his heels.

The pack set a blistering pace along the back stretch, and the foremost Ballydoyle colt soon ran out of puff and fell back, yet the eventual winner looked as if

L A S T YE AR ’S D E E ST AK ES

he was simply being comfortably nudged along, biding his time along the flanks of Hott Shott and Mirabeau and waiting for the right moment.

As his stablemate faded into the distance behind him, Ryan Moore tapped the accelerator on Mount Kilimanjaro with his trademark precision timing. The French-bred surged past his rivals with an indifatigable turn of foot, eating up the ground to reel in both Calla Lagoon and Great David in easy fashion. The valiant High Stock put up a fine challenge, but he too was eventually overcome.

Mount Kilimanjaro’s unsual large white blaze crossed the line ahead by a neck, cementing his trainer’s legendary status in this race.

CONSTITUTION RIVER produced a dominant display when signing off his 2-y-o season in perfect fashion in the Futurity Stakes, a race that has thrown up several subsequent Classic winners. He’s raced exclusively at 7f to date but hopes are high he will stay this far and he can continue Aidan O’Brien’s stranglehold of this race. ORMONDE, who won all 16 races in his career including the English Triple Crown in 1886, was widely regarded as the greatest horse of the 19th Century. To some, he’s arguably the greatest racehorse to have lived. Either way, his legacy has been celebrated here at Chester since 1936, when the Ormonde Stakes was staged for the first time.

Foaled in 1883, Ormonde was a son of the prolific winning racemare Lily Agnes, after whom the opening race of the Boodles May Festival is named. Ormonde won all three races he contested as a two-year-old, including the Criterion and Dewhurst Stakes in the space of only 48 hours.

He won his first Classic, the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, on his first run of his three-year-old campaign; then added a second when he landed the Epsom Derby on his next start. Further wins followed in the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, en route to Doncaster, where his victory in the St Leger saw Ormonde become only the fourth horse in history to win the Triple Crown of British Classics. Ormonde

O R M O N D E

S T A K E S H I S T O R Y

won the Champion Stakes in 1886, and the Rous Memorial and a second Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on consecutive days during his final season in 1887. That last-named race proved the most challenging of Ormonde’s career. Although he eventually mastered old adversary Minting in an epic duel, a wind ailment he inherited from his dam Lily Agnes had become so acute it was said his “choking fight for breath could be heard all over the racecourse”.

Ormonde was retired by his owner Hugh Grosvenor, the 1st Duke of Westminster, to stand at his Eaton Hall stud, just south of Chester. Much was anticipated of Ormonde’s second career as stallion, but fertility issues meant he sired only eight foals that would race in Britain. Despite this, one of them, Orme, proved a champion in his own right, winning a string of top races including the Eclipse twice, the Sussex Stakes and the Champion Stakes.

Fittingly, the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes has been won by numerous top-class horses down the decades.

Hamish (L)

From the esteemed stayer

Alycidon (1949) and Tulyar (1952) during its early days, through to Indiana (1965), who was also a Chester Vase winner, and Classic winners Blakeney (1970), Crow (1977) and Teenoso (1984).

Its most celebrated winners of recent times include Daliapour (2000), Harbinger (2010), St Nicholas Abbey (2011) and Brown Panther (2014), who was jointly-owned by former Liverpool, Manchester United and England footballer Michael Owen, and trained locally at Manor House Stables by Tom Dascombe.

There was also a Royal success in 2016 with Dartmouth, owned by Her Majesty The Queen and a record sixth winner in this race for trainer Sir Michael Stoute. Lester Piggott, Pat Eddery and Ryan Moore are the leading jockeys with five victories apiece, while there have been three dual winners –Sovrango (1962, 1963), Shambo (1993, 1994) and St Expedit (2001, 2002).

Hamish won the race in both 2022 and 2023 for William Haggas and Tom Marquand, whilst 2024’s renewal of this race saw the Aidan O’Brientrained Point Lonsdale cruise to a six-and-a-half length victory. That win saw O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore make it three wins in the last six renewals, improved again in 2025 when Illinois dug deep to make it four from seven.

Illinois (L)

The 2025 running of the Ormonde Stakes was a thrilling contest, and once again Aidan O’Brien stole the show with an impressive display of freshness from Illinois amid a hot field of rivals. Fresh from a break and having the first run of his season here at Chester, the four-year old son of Galileo bided his time and moved at the perfect moment to secure victory.

The pace was determined by Karl Burke’s Al Qareem, who jumped into his favoured position of frontrunner right from the start. Leading the field by up to four lengths at times, Sam James settled his mount into a strong pace, playing to his strengths and depth of heart to try and outpace his rivals over the 1m 5f distance.

Nevertheless, the daunting sight of Ryan Moore and Illinois in his slipstream was not to be shaken off, and at every moment the pair tracked their rival like a heat-seeking missile, creeping closer and closer.

Also keeping on close behind was the Willie Mullins-trained, multi-talented Absurde, taking a break from top class hurdling in the hands of William Buick and relishing the good ground to travel in midfield most of the way round.

L A S T YE AR ’S O R M O N D E S T A K E S

The game frontrunner kept on well, yet despite the dangers lurking behind, Al Qareem swung too wide on the final bend, leaving plenty of room wide open for Ryan Moore to tap the pedal and urge his mount into full gear. Illinois responded in bold fashion, surging to the head of the field. For a moment he looked as if he would leave his rivals in the dust but then the gas started to peter out. However, when briefly challenged by Absurde, who got up and appeared as if he would breeze past to the line, the sight of his rival in his wing mirrors stirred Illinois to dig deep and redouble his efforts, clinching a length and a quarter victory.

Al Qareem proved his stamina and found second wind to seize second, followed by Absurde, with the Gary & Josh Moore trained Mondo Man in forth.

Illinois’ impressive performance last year highlighted his grit, stamina and sharpness, qualities we hope to view again today as he returns to defend his crown. Yet Al Qareem also returns, and is today the day the frontrunner keeps his lead?

This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

PLAY SMARTER

A 3-y-o handicap chock full of interesting sorts but perhaps none more so than MCMURRAY, who progressed well at 2 yrs and still looks on a favourable mark based on the strength of his form (beat the now 94-rated Crest of Light at Doncaster on penultimate outing). Factual cemented a positive start to his career with a determined success at Newcastle in February and remains open to improvement, while good cases can also be made for Strength of Spirit and the selection’s stablemate Moonfall.

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 71 to 90 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap and is considered a disadvantage.
