ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS Although she could only muster an eighth-placed finish earlier this month at Salisbury, IMPULSIVE SPIRIT will find this much easier than that Group 3 contest. David Evans’ filly had previously made a winning debut at Chepstow and she may be able to concede 7lb all round. Havana Flash arrives on the back of finishing seventh in a Listed event at Sandown and she’s feared most, ahead of Rhodes Runner.

RACE 2

TOTEWIN: IMPULSIVE SPIRIT

Having hit the frame on both outings to date, Somers Isles is an intriguing nursery debutant, with an official rating of 75 looking workable. Andrew Balding’s filly isn’t taken lightly given her nice draw, but KOODINI could prove better value. A 2lb drop for his latest fourth at Haydock is potentially lenient and he’s only 2lb higher than his breakthrough victory at Catterick in late July. Reopposing third Gerry’s Darling is a feasible alternative.

RACE 3

TOTEWIN: KOODINI

RACE 4 RACE 5

TOTEEACHWAY: REDS AND WOLVES

Top Juggler arrives on the back of a respectable third at Ripon and he must enter calculations off an unchanged mark. However, stall 10 dampens enthusiasm for Seb Spencer’s gelding and the vote goes to HAVANA RUM. The six-year-old handles a turning track and he is now 2lb below his last winning figure. Kirkdale, Miraculous and the selection’s stable companion Watchdog are others to consider. TOTEWIN: HAVANA RUM

TOTEEACHWAY: TOP JUGGLER

MAHARAJAS EXPRESS has been kept busy since he won over C&D in July and has generally flourished during the period. Having rewarded favourite backers with another success at Doncaster on Sunday, the thriving six-year-old gets the vote under a 5lb penalty. Over Spiced was a close second in that previously mentioned trackand-trip event and she must be taken seriously on more favourable terms. Temple Of Athena and Dream Composer are others to keep an eye on. TOTEWIN: MAHARAJAS EXPRESS

RACE 6

TOTEEACHWAY: SOMERS ISLES

Although Let’s Dream arrives here as the highest-rated rival, he’s been pretty underwhelming in four outings since scoring over C&D in May. Reds And Wolves landed the spoils on his latest start at Wolverhampton in good style and he’s high up on the shortlist. However, stablemate PATAGONIA GIRL looks nicely treated on these terms and she was far from disgraced when finishing midfield in a competitive class 2 at York 29 days ago. TOTEWIN: PATAGONIA GIRL

TOTEEACHWAY: OVER SPICED

Homestrait supplemented a victory at Haydock with a narrow defeat over track and trip and another bold bid is forecast, but the vote goes to ANDESITE. Roger Fell’s charge returned to winning ways in this grade at Thirsk earlier in the month and is fancied to follow up. Of the remainder, recent C&D winner King Of Thunder makes the most appeal. TOTEWIN: ANDESITE

RACE 7

TOTEEACHWAY: HAVANA FLASH

TOTEEACHWAY: HOMESTRAIT

Zimmerman bids to complete a four-timer and should mount a bold bid in trying to do so, but he might be up against it with TABASKO. Ed Walker’s filly justified favouritism by a neck in a stronger event at Lingfield last month and remains unexposed over this distance. Off just a 2lb higher rating, she looks the one to beat. Two-time course scorer Dream Harder completes the shortlist. TOTEWIN: TABASKO

TOTEEACHWAY: ZIMMERMAN

DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length.

The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

RACE DESCRIPTION A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular seven furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75.

RACE DESCRIPTION Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this one mile and two furlongs contest for three-year-olds and upwards, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.
