ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD

WAYS TO BET

WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)

EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake

STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay ’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.

PLACING A BET

Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:

1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection

2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake

3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly

4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe

5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.

Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

15 Jockey’s photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

THE RACECOURSE

DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

WEIGHTWATCHER

The horses which have dropped most in the weights from previous winning handicap marks in the last two years: 1.40 Red Mirage (won off 77 down 3lb to 74); Touchwood (won off 70 down 5lb to 65); Wobwobwob (won off 87 down 5lb to 82); Outrun The Storm (won off 73 down 8lb to 65); Bay Breeze (won off 84 down 11lb to 73); 4.00 Ciotog (won off 75 down 8lb to 67); G’daay (won off 78 down 8lb to 70); Berkshire Phantom (won off 70 down 14lb to 56); 4.35 Alcazan (won off 75 down 6lb to 69); Lockdown Lass (won off 57 down 6lb to 51).

CLASSY TIPS

The following horses are running today in a race at least two grades lower than their previous race: 2.50 MAYAADA (down 2 grades); 2.50 THE RESDEV SCHOLAR (down 2); 2.50 UBETTERSEETHIS (down 2); 4.35 ALCAZAN (down 2 grades); 5.10 PENFOLDS GRANGE (down 2 grades).

STABLE MOVES

1.40 BEAR FORCE ONE has moved from M Dods to M Mullineaux.

Outrun The Storm won this last season and races off 8lb lower with Eireann Cagney reunited in the saddle this year. He might get involved, but PROFIT REFUSED could be the one. He didn’t see it out when third over further last month but the booking of Patrick Mullins catches the eye and he may get back to winning ways. Ultramarine is 2lb lower than his new mark even with a penalty and commands plenty of respect.

TOTEWIN: PROFIT REFUSED

TOTEEACHWAY: ULTRAMARINE

DREAM OUT LOUD pulled too hard when fourth at Windsor last month, but his win at Kempton has been franked by the runner-up winning since and a potentially stronger pace is likely to aid his cause. Hundred Caps showed much improved form to win at Beverley and may have more to come in first-time cheekpieces, while Arabian Cobra completes the shortlist carrying a 6lb penalty for local trainer Hugo Palmer

TOTEWIN: DREAM OUT LOUD

TOTEEACHWAY: HUNDRED CAPS

Davvy kept on well over six furlongs to win his maiden at Redcar and should not be inconvenienced by the extra furlong, but he may have to give way to JACK THE TOOTH here. Sent off favourite on his second start at Leicester, he won easily enough despite being hampered at the start and a clear run might see him follow up. Ubetterseethis is another to consider after an unlucky run in a much better race at Pontefract.

TOTEWIN: JACK THE TOOTH

TOTEEACHWAY: DAVVY

Magellan Cloud ran a blinder to finish second from a less favourable draw over C&D last month and is an attractive proposition given the winner of that race went on to further success at Epsom last Saturday. However, TOPTEAM overcame an even wider stalls position when won over track-and-trip at the same fixture. Having posted a slightly better time figure, Andrew Balding’s colt shades the vote. Raulin and Neardown complete the shortlist.

TOTEWIN: TOPTEAM

TOTEEACHWAY: MAGELLAN CLOUD

The handily-drawn Rwenearlytheredad, who chases a four-timer, and Alfie Boy can set warm fractions and each are capable of holding on should they amass a healthy enough lead. However, there is also every chance they could tee things up nicely for a closer A scenario which brings in COMMANDER OF LIFE, who runs off 3lb below his last winning mark. The four-year-old has the potential to swoop late and go one better than his recent second-placed finish at Pontefract.

TOTEWIN: COMMANDER OF LIFE

TOTEEACHWAY: RWENEARLYTHEREDAD

Dappled Light won going away to secure a double at Bath last month and holds an obvious chance, despite being 4lb higher. Vixey is respected after his runner-up effort at Carlisle, but the vote goes to THATS MY BOY LUKE. Tim Easterby’s four-year-old finished a close third at Beverley last time and goes off an unchanged rating. With a plum draw in stall one, he looks the way to go.

TOTEWIN: THATS MY BOY LUKE

TOTEEACHWAY: DAPPLED LIGHT

IMPARTIALITY did well to get up by a head after suffering from a troubled passage at Hamilton on his most recent start and is just 4lb higher Phillip Makin’s four-year-old might only need to reproduce that level of form in order to complete the hat-trick. Last-time-out Windsor scorer Barry’s Boy is one to watch out for in his bid to complete a double, while Whizz By isn’t out of it either

TOTEWIN: IMPARTIALITY

TOTEEACHWAY: BARRY’S BOY

This is a seven furlongs amateur jockeys handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller such as this seven furlongs contest for two-year-olds only is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 66 to 85 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

TOPTEAM can go on improving for the in-form Andrew Balding and a second C&D handicap success beckons. He took well to the track and was nicely on top a fortnight ago and can defy a 7lb rise. Magellan Cloud would have gone close in the other division of Topteam’s race with better luck and must be respected. Stark Warning could have more to offer now handicapping and could feature.

Don’t forget to bet on the 3:35 at YORK and 3:50 at SANDOWN PARK.

This is a seven and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap and is considered a disadvantage.

JOHN L SULLIVAN’s wide draw may not be the negative it first appears for one with his style so, with a recent run under his belt at Ayr 23 days ago likely to have blown the cobwebs away, he’s narrowly selected to come out on top from what looks an exploitable mark. There are several in-form sorts in opposition though, headed up by Vixey Original Thinker and Dappled Light. Super Hit isn’t out of things either

This undoubtedly rates BARMYBLADE’s toughest assignment to date but Tim Easterby’s charge went easily like the best horse at the weights when third at Ripon (6f) 2 weeks ago and, appealing as the type who will be well suited by this sort of test, he could well represent a spot of value at the foot of the weights. RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a seven and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 59 to 78 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PLAY SMARTER

Owing to his come-from-behind style IMPARTIALITY will always be a hostage to fortune, particularly in big-field handicaps at courses like this where traffic problems are commonplace. However, he has won his two handiaps this season with seemingly more in hand than the margins of victory would suggest and will take some stopping, provided he gets the breaks. The consistent Whizz By is 5lb ‘well-in’ following her recent Goodwood success and she is feared most ahead of Arbitration and Boston Run.
