ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD
WAYS TO BET
WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)
EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake
STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay ’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.
PLACING A BET
Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:
1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection
2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake
3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly
4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe
5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.
Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
15 Jockey’s photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
Virgin Bet Raceday Preview
1.35pm - Sir Peter Fossick showed some good early pace last time out at Haydock on good to soft ground. Todays going looks to be more testing but has had two good efforts in previous maidens and that experience may prove the difference here. Mayday Malone steps up in trip and there may be more to come from the Michael Bell trained colt who has run green in his previous two starts. Tactical Plan hung to his right here last month. An improvement may be needed today but he has the most experience in this race and has shown he can run to a good level.
2.05pm - La Yakel looks like he may be best suited by today’s ground conditions. He was an impressive winner when last seen at Hamilton in the Lanark Silver Bell Handicap on heavy ground Al Qareem (NAP) won this race last year and has been running well in group company this year He does have some good form on heavy ground and although he was no match for Al Aasy last time out in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes, a chance is taken that he possesses enough class here now dropped back into listed company. Burdett Road finished 12th in the Ebor. He is tongue tied today for the first time The ground should be ok for him, but he may want a further trip
2.40pm - Sheradann looks interesting here from stall 2 and on softer ground. Spirit Mixer who won here last time out over course and distance may not have ideal ground conditions for him today. The Gavin Cromwell trained mare; Vera Verto looks an interesting addition here off a mark of 89. Mr Escobar who finished 10th in the Cesarewitch in 2023 has not been the most straight forward horse but comes here with a British rating of 84 and Sean D Bowen takes off 3lbs. He does have his chances here now reverting to the flat.
3.20pm - Teej A steps back in class and back in trip but she may be best watched today after a few disappointing runs. Ardennes could make all if needed and although the ground is an unknown, he cannot be discounted. Invincible Annice won a Novice Stakes at Hamilton on heavy ground this month. She breaks from stall 2 and carries bottom weight. A chance is taken that the Karl Burke filly is coming into good form and can take the spills here.
4.05pm - City Streak won a handicap here at Chester on good to firm ground in May. He does have some good form in the book on more testing ground. Maghlaak has good claims from stall 2 and has shown some good form previously on testing ground. Loyal Touch also looks interesting from stall 4 and should go ok on this ground although he has mainly raced on better ground conditions. Paddy The Squire looks to be coming into a good run of form, finishing 2nd on his latest two outings at Hamilton. He steps up in trip today from his last run and after a wind op.
4.40pm - Cori Glory may be suited by ground conditions and gets a nice stall to break from today. She has shown previous early speed in her career but was somewhat disappointing last time out at Ascot. Serenity Dream is unexposed and there may be plenty more to come from the colt who now runs for the Richard Fahey yard. Transitioning won here in July on good to soft ground. Today will be more testing conditions but a chance is taken that the 3-year-old will deliver for Andrew Balding and make it back-to-back wins over course and distance.
5.15pm - Sea Legend just came up short in a selling stakes at Goodwood last time out. Brian Hughes takes the ride here for Donald McCain and the selection is respected here in stall 2. Oman returns to Chester yet again, this time running off a mark of 69. He has place claims again here today. Green Team is also respected. He comes here off the back of a good run at Epsom.
5.55pm - It’s All About You is going for three wins on the bounce for Jennie Candlish. He steps back in trip today and should be suited by the softer ground conditions. Dreams Adozen also possesses some good recent form and should handle the ground. He breaks from stall 1 and is likely to lead or be close to the lead early on.

DESCRIPTION
A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a seven furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.

This is wide open but the vote goes to COVER UP who brings some rock solid handicap form to the table whilst shaping as though this idiosyncratic trip will prove ideal too. Vintage Clarets has slipped to a very attractive mark and heads the list of dangers on the back of his eye-catching York eighth, although a good case can also be made for American Affair, Bergerac, Shagraan and Apollo One in this ultra competitive Portland.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a two mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

Total prize fund £20000
Owners Prize Money 1st £8032, 2nd £4016, 3rd £2008, 4th £1004, 5th £502, 6th £250, 7th £126, 8th £62. (Penalty Value £10192) Weights raised 1lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable.
RACE DESCRIPTION
A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular five furlong race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 85

HORSE WELFARE
At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

PLAY SMARTER
Aidan O’Brien typically holds a strong hand as he bids for a seventh success in the oldest Classic, while Ralph Beckett tries to win this with a filly once again, but SUNWAY looks the value call. His close second in the Irish Derby puts him right up there in terms of form and the longer distance promises to suit. The unbeaten Jan Brueghel has the most potential in the field and rates the main threat, though stablemate Illinois is also well in the mix on his narrow Great Voltigeur second.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile, two and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

PITNEY produced his best effort yet when going down narrowly over C&D in June and, though not in the same form since, he will have every chance if able to get back on track returned to this venue. Cori Glory, who promises to be suited by this sharp track, is an appealing each-way proposition, while Boy Douglas and Legal Reform are others to consider Theme Park is on a good mark but conditions are a worry where he is concerned.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile, four and a half furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.
