A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

SUNDAY 4TH AUGUST 2024

Good Afternoon,

Welcome to Chester Racecourse for our Liverpool John Lennon Airport Family Fun Day.

Today we have a thrilling line-up of racing and lots of fun activities taking place out on the Open Course, where we’re excited to be joined by children’s TV favourites Bluey & Bingo.

We’re also hosting another charity Pantomime Horse Race for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd at 1.30pm, which I’m delighted to see has been greatly supported by many local businesses. This fantastic community event raises vital funds to support the amazing care that our local hospice provides.

This afternoon’s racing gets underway at 2.30pm, with the Liverpool John Lennon Airport Runway Sprinter Handicap Stakes one of six races on the card. The Liverpool Airport Faster, Easier, Friendlier Queensferry Stakes (Listed Race) is our feature at 4.05pm, while the Ladies Day on 31st August Handicap Stakes rounds off the day at 5.05pm.

I would like to extend my thanks to our recently announced partners Liverpool John Lennon Airport who are title sponsors of Family Fun Day this afternoon. Located less than 30 miles away from the racecourse, the airport operates flights to around 70 destinations in the UK and across Europe, and many of our guests regularly travel to and from the airport. My thanks also go to our other sponsors associated with this afternoon’s card of racing – the European Breeders Fund and Excell Supply. We really do appreciate your support.

I hope you all enjoy a fun-filled day with us here at Chester Racecourse and make the most of all the activities going on.

We next race here for our Powells Jewellery Ladies Day on Saturday 31st August, where we’ll be joined by three-time Brit award nominee Ella Henderson for a special post-racing performance. We’ll also have our fabulous best dressed competition, including the chance to win some amazing prizes. I hope you can join us again then.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD

WAYS TO BET

WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)

EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake

STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win

• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay ’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.

PLACING A BET

Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:

1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection

2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake

3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly

4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe

5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.

Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

15 Jockey’s photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

LEADING TRAINER

The leading Trainer will receive the Bobby McAlpine Trophy and a case of Champagne, with £10,000 going to the yard.

This perpetual trophy commemorates Bobb McAlpine, who was at the heart of Chester Race Company for thirty years. Serving as Chairman for twenty years and Honorary President until the time of his passing in 2021.

He was instrumental in the expansion of Chester Race Company bringing it to where it is today. His love of racing came from his uncle telling him about winning the Grand National in 1921, with his horse Shaun Spadah.

When in his twenties he bought his first horse from Ireland and his love of horse racing grew. Many winners followed in the King George V Stakes in 1969 and the Ascot Gold Cup in 1970. He also had a small breeding operation, breeding the likes of Inglis Drever a three time winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, and many others.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

Princess Niyla was on target at Beverley before finding only an unexposed rival too strong at Redcar on Wednesday. Turned out quickly and with Rossa Ryan aboard for the first time, she merits respect. Woodstock City receives a welcome drop in class and should not be written off from a sliding rating, but FLATLEY sprung a surprise at Newbury recently and, given that it was only his second run at 10 furlongs, there might be more to come.

WIN: FLATLEY

DANGER: PRINCESS NIYLA

An opening mark of 59 proved no barrier to success for LAW DEGREE, who won on his nursery debut in first-time cheekpieces (retained) at Beverley. That form has since been franked by the runner-up and a subsequent 6lb rise might not prevent Tim Easterby’s youngster from going in again. There are bound to be challengers aplenty and perhaps recent Catterick second Tactical Plan will be the most dangerous. Others to note include Dollyana and New Bombay.

WIN: LAW DEGREE

DANGER: TACTICAL PLAN

HOT DANCER, a half-brother to smart juvenile Dance In The Grass, who won on her debut for these connections before going on to take Listed honours next time, makes significant appeal on paper and is fancied to make a winning start. The Andrew Balding-trained Captain Harry is likely to prove popular, while New Bay colt Neardown might prove best of the remainder

WIN: HOT DANCER

DANGER: CAPTAIN HARRY

AL SHABAB STORM took the step up to this level in his stride when striking over 7f here last month and he can continue on his upward curve. Andrew Balding’s threeyear-old doesn’t lack speed and, from his handy draw, could be the one to beat again. Quinault has failed to fire so far this year, but he will find this easier than the Hackwood at Newbury and could easily bounce back to have a say. Funny Story completes the shortlist.

WIN: AL SHABAB STORM

DANGER: QUINAULT

Spirit Genie pipped Way To Dubai and Yanifer over track and trip in May and it would be no surprise to see him confirm that form off 4lb higher. However, he could be up against it with NEVER SO BRAVE in opposition. Sir Michael Stoute’s colt impressed on his handicap debut over an extended 7f here before finishing a commendable sixth in the Jersey at Royal Ascot. This looks like a much more suitable assignment and he is the one to beat.

WIN: NEVER SO BRAVE

DANGER: SPIRIT GENIE

Sea Grey has relished his return to the Flat on his last two outings here and it would be no surprise to see him thereabouts again off 2lb higher than for the latest of those victories. However, a chance can be taken on CAMBRIA LEGEND, who failed to justify favouritism at Doncaster but takes a step up in trip off a 1lb lower rating. With scope for further improvement on only his fifth handicap start, he gets the vote. Richard P Smith is another to consider.

WIN: CAMBRIA LEGEND

DANGER: SEA GREY

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile, two and half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry This particular seven furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75

The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £409,272 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 24th June to 15th September 2024.

HORSE WELFARE

At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

LOST CHILDREN

Our stewards have a supply of white wristbands that can be used to write your telephone number on and place around you children’s wrist in case they get lost, that way we can re-unite you much quicker If you lose your child on a raceday, please alert a steward who will be able to get a radio call out to other stewards within the vicinity Equally, if you have found a lost child on-course, please alert a steward as quickly as possible.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a seven and a half furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

HOT DANCER fetched £50,000 at the Breeze Ups and, if he’s more forward than the others, he might be able to put it to good use at a track that favours prominent tactics. Angles are thin on the ground without the benefit of market clues but Captain Harry and Chelsea Old Church are appealing on pedigree.

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb
