A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
SATURDAY

15TH JUNE 2024
Good afternoon,
Welcome to Edinburgh Gin Summer Saturday. Today is the first of our popular Summer Saturday fixtures and celebrates our partnership with Edinburgh Gin, who have now been title sponsors of this raceday for the past three years.
We have eight thrilling races on the card for you this afternoon, including our feature of the day, the Horseradish Catering & Events Handicap Stakes, offering a total prize fund of £60,000.
We start today’s racing at 1.35pm with the Juddmonte EBF Restricted Novice Stakes and close with the Edinburgh Gin Seaside Handicap Stakes Div II at 5.35pm.
I would like to extend my thanks to Edinburgh Gin, who also sponsor our fabulous Edinburgh Gin Garden, for their continued association with Chester Racecourse. We greatly value your support.
My thanks also go to our other sponsors associated with this afternoon’s card of racing – Juddmonte, the international thoroughbred horse racing and breeding enterprise, and Precision Facades, a leader in the building envelope industry. We really do appreciate your support.
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful day with us here at Chester Racecourse. We next race here on Saturday 29th June for the Matthew Clark Summer Style Raceday. It promises to be another Summer Saturday of great racing and entertainment. I hope you can join us again then.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD
WAYS TO BET
WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)
EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake
STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay ’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.
PLACING A BET
Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:
1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection
2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake
3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly
4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe
5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.
Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
15 Jockey’s photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

LEADING TRAINER
The leading Trainer will receive the Bobby McAlpine Trophy and a case of Champagne, with £10,000 going to the yard.
This perpetual trophy commemorates Bobb McAlpine, who was at the heart of Chester Race Company for thirty years. Serving as Chairman for twenty years and Honorary President until the time of his passing in 2021.
He was instrumental in the expansion of Chester Race Company bringing it to where it is today. His love of racing came from his uncle telling him about winning the Grand National in 1921, with his horse Shaun Spadah.

When in his twenties he bought his first horse from Ireland and his love of horse racing grew. Many winners followed in the King George V Stakes in 1969 and the Ascot Gold Cup in 1970. He also had a small breeding operation, breeding the likes of Inglis Drever a three time winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, and many others.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS
ASKTHEBOSS displayed plenty of early speed on his racecourse debut when fourth at York and that could be used to his advantage from a wider draw than ideal. Death Or Glory ran well on his first start to finish second at Hamilton, but the concern would be the fact he was slowly away from the stalls and Richard Fahey’s colt will need to be a lot sharper in the early stages. Others for the shortlist include Tactical Plan and Thecoffeepoddotco.
WIN: ASKTHEBOSS
DANGER: DEATH OR GLORY
COPPER KNIGHT won this race in 2022 and went very close at the May meeting when just denied by an improving type in Democracy Dilemma. The 10-year-old finished third at York most recently and boasts the advantage of being drawn in stall two, which gives him every chance of getting back in the winner’s enclosure. His stablemate Count D’Orsay remains on a very tempting mark and is respected, while Arecibo and Radio Goo Goo are others with viable credentials.
WIN: COPPER KNIGHT
DANGER: COUNT D’ORSAY
HOSANNA POWER made a successful handicap bow at Newbury when getting the better of a rival who has since franked the form by winning at Kempton last week. Given plenty of time by Sir Michael Stoute, the son of Frankel is expected to have no problem with handling a 4lb rise. City Streak (first), Box To Box (second) and Woodstock City (third) were closely matched over C&D last month and the trio are expected to be in the mix once again.
WIN: HOSANNA POWER
DANGER: CITY STREAK
WITNESS STAND finished second to a classy colt over C&D last month and Tom Clover’s gelding would appear to hold strong claims from an unchanged mark, for all that a wide draw is far from ideal. Monfrid, berthed well in stall two, looks a likely pace angle and, if building on his recent handicap bow, he can be involved. Expert Choice made a pleasing return to action when third in the Edinburgh Cup at Musselburgh a fortnight ago and is considered now eased 1lb in the ratings.
WIN: WITNESS STAND
DANGER: MONFRID
This C&D will hold no fears for Percy Jones, who finished second in the corresponding event 12 months ago. He is 1lb lower and a player today, but the progressive PLUS POINT can prove too strong. A game winner over an extended 1m6f at Doncaster two weeks ago, she looks set to relish the return to further and does not look overburdened by a subsequent 3lb rise. Lusaka can be forgiven his moderate reappearance and he’s one to consider too.
WIN: PLUS POINT
DANGER: PERCY JONES
Runner-up on both of his starts since joining the Julie Camacho outfit, Mythical Phoenix is likely to prove popular once again, but a chance is taken on EXALTED ANGEL. Karl Burke’s charge often reserves his best for an artificial surface, but he was a creditable second from this reduced turf mark last time out and must hold every chance under similar conditions. Hyperfocus has become too well treated to ignore, while last year’s surprise victor Faro De San Juan should not be underestimated.
WIN: EXALTED ANGEL
DANGER: MYTHICAL PHOENIX
TIME TELLS ALL bounced back to form when a short-head second over 1m2f at Nottingham 10 days ago and Declan Carroll’s gelding has to be of interest off just a 1lb higher mark here. Dreams Adozen was a close third over 1m6f on the same card and could prove to be the main threat, although Rocha Do Leao and Percy Willis should not be discounted.
WIN: TIME TELLS ALL
DANGER: DREAMS ADOZEN
In an open event, marginal preference is for GORDON GREY, who got off the mark over this trip at Pontefract last month and a 3lb rise for that success appears to be fair. The unexposed Tango Man made the frame at Wetherby recently and has to be of interest on his first attempt at this distance. Oman and Sax Appeal are others who arrive here with strong form claims.
WIN: GORDON GREY
DANGER: TANGO MAN

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. FLYING FRONTIER shaped well in a couple of Yarmouth handicaps at the end last season and is low-mileage sort who has the scope for further progress as a 4-y-o. Similar comments apply to Mascapone, who caught the eye on his return from an absence at Newcastle and could be a big threat if Jamie Spencer can negotiate a trouble-free passage from the 15 box. The shortlist is completed by Dancing Magic who has yet to win but his latest Chester second shows he can go close from a mark in the mid-90s.

This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 69 to 88. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90

HOSANNA POWER is just the sort of low-mileage 4-y-o his leading yard excels with, and having beaten a subsequent winner on last month’s return, he looks well weighted. City Streak and Box To Box finished first and second over C&D recently and are feared most, the latter perhaps the bigger threat this time.
HORSE WELFARE
At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.
NO SMOKING AREAS
We request that you kindly observe Chester Racecourse’s smoking policy Smoking is permitted in all outside areas, including balconies. Smoking is now prohibited in any enclosed area, bar or restaurant, seats within the County Stand, the terraced steps within the Tattersalls Enclosure and the Subway Ashtrays have been provided all over the course and we ask that you make use of them to keep Chester Racecourse a clean and tidy area.

PLAY SMARTER
RELENTLESS VOYAGER stamped his class all over a competitive handicap with a most taking performance at Epsom 2 weeks ago and looks more than capable of making his mark back at this level. He gets the nod over Klondike, who is an interesting contender following a highly encouraging reappearance/handicap debut at this venue. Chesspiece clearly wasn’t right at Sandown last time and shouldn’t be taken lightly, either

This race is a seven furlongs and 127 yards handicap race for three-year-olds. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

An ultra competitive sprint. WOODHAY WONDER is on a major roll but still figures on a handy-looking mark so edges the vote in her bid to seal a remarkable five-timer Richard Fahey holds a strong hand and his Garfield Shadow (second choice) could emerge as the pick of his quartet. Elmonjed and Pocklington both look to have better days ahead of them and command plenty of respect too, with Vince L’Amour completing the shortlist in a cracking contest.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for fpur-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap and is considered a disadvantage.

Some races can often prove very popular with owners and trainers and as a result more horses are declared to run than the official safety limit allows for. To avoid horses being denied a run which is obviously disappointing for connections, the British Horseracing Authority has allowed the previous race to be split into two divisions, with each contest carrying identical race conditions.

PLAY SMARTER
OMAN is less than straightforward but he’s made a fine start for his current yard and remains very well treated on old form, so he receives the vote. Tango Man ran well in a strong-looking handicap at Wetherby 12 days ago and looks sure to play a leading role over this still longer trip providing this doesn’t come too soon, with the ultra-consistent Gordon Grey completing the shortlist.
