A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR- SATURDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2023
Good afternoon,
Welcome to Autumn Festival Saturday
The evenings may be starting to draw in, and summer may feel like a distant memory, but we are still hosting great flat racing at the world’s oldest racecourse, through September and October.
We have an exciting 7 race card today, starting at 2.05pm with the feature race, the Tote Stand Cup Stakes. Later in the afternoon, horses will take to the track for the Storrar Cowdry Solicitors Nursery Handicap Stakes at 3.52pm. The day will end with the Oktoberfest Race Day 30th September Handicap Stakes at 5.35pm.
My sincere thanks go to today’s sponsors, Tote, Camden Town Brewery, The British EBF and Storrar Cowdry Solicitors. All at Chester Racecourse are grateful for your support.
We next race here on Saturday 30th October for our new Oktoberfest themed race day I hope you’ll join us again for a day of great racing and fantastic Bavarian themed fun, as we celebrate Oktoberfest.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD
WAYS TO BET
WIN ONLY The most common form of bet You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)
EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet
for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake
STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting
• Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win
• 5
7 runners (inclusive)
1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.
PLACING A BET
Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:
1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection.
2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake
3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly
4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe.
5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed
Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
15 Jockey’s photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.
A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This represents a significant drop in grade for the classy BLUESTOCKING, who was last seen finishing a highly creditable fourth in the Yorkshire Oaks. The daughter of Camelot can take advantage under ideal conditions and notch up a deserved first win since her debut at Salisbury last September Modaara was disappointing when well fancied for a Group 3 at Haydock last time out and better can be expected now, while Sea Of Roses is a player based on the pick of her form.
WIN: BLUESTOCKING
DANGER: MODAARA
A comfortable winner over C&D last month, FIRST IMPRESSION can take this slight rise in grade in his stride, despite a 5lb rise. The six-year-old is proven on this ground and he may have too much for Sweet Reward, who arrives in great form, having won two of his last three Newcastle winner Southern Voyage is another to consider on his first run for the Richard Fahey stable, along with the capable Box To Box.
WIN: FIRST IMPRESSION
DANGER: SWEET REWARD
Third in the valuable Convivial maiden at York, THANKS FOREVER showed more than enough on his debut to suggest that he would be getting off the mark in no time His prominent style of racing should stand him in good stead, especially at a track of this nature, and the son of Kessaar gets the vote at the expense of Beverley runner-up Winged Messenger. Ziggy’s Dream, who is winless since her debut at Doncaster in April, appeals most of the remainder
WIN: THANKS FOREVER
DANGER: WINGED MESSENGER
DUE FOR LUCK was able to defy a penalty to follow up at Ripon 18 days ago, having made a successful debut at Carlisle the previous month. With that in mind, an opening mark of 83 might underestimate the Due Diligence gelding and he is taken to maintain his unbeaten record. Midnight Lir finished second to one that went on to occupy the same position in a warm York nursery next time and must be respected. Hackman heads the remainder
WIN: DUE FOR LUCK
DANGER: MIDNIGHT LIR
GOLDEN MAVERICK posted another career best when finishing second to an easy winner at Haydock eight days ago Recent efforts would suggest a step up in trip will be in his favour and first-time cheekpieces could elicit the required improvement to see him go one better. Dreams Adozen arrives in search of her hat-trick following wins at Hamilton and Bath. She ought to be more than capable from just 3lb higher, while Urban Outlook might be best placed to chase the pair home
WIN: GOLDEN MAVERICK
DANGER: DREAMS ADOZEN
DIVINE LIBRA has made the frame in both starts since winning over course and distance in July and it would be no surprise to see the son of Dark Angel return to winning ways here. That said, Roman Dragon has been knocking hard on the door of late and is an obvious threat to the selection, while Oso Rapido is first-time cheekpieces edges out Glorious Angel to be best of the rest
WIN: DIVINE LIBRA
DANGER: ROMAN DRAGON
WAY OF LIFE bounced back to form when a head second over 1m4f at Wolverhampton two weeks ago and the five-year-old merits the utmost respect off a 2lb higher mark here. Can’t Stop Now has to be of interest following his win at Carlisle late last month, while the consistent Compliant is likely to be in the mix once again. Others to note are Chase The Dollar and Bashful.
WIN: WAY OF LIFE
DANGER: CAN’T STOP NOW

Leading Trainer OF CHESTER 2023 season
will receive A case of champagne, the Bobby McAlpine Trophy and £5,000
The trophy is to commemorate Mr Bobby McAlpine. Bobby was at the heart of Chester Race Company for 30 years, serving as Chairman for 20 years – and Honorary President until the time of his passing in 2021.
He was instrumental in the expansion of Chester Race Company bringing it to where it is today His love of racing came from his uncle telling him about winning the Grand National in 1921 with his horse Shaun Spadah.
His first horse was bought from Ireland when still in his twenties and the love affair with horse racing continued. Many winners followed in the King George V Stakes in 1969 and the ascot Gold Cup in 1970 He then began a small breeding operation breeding the likes of Inglis Drever, a three time winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, and many others.
The Chester Race Company and his family felt offering his trophy for a period of a year to the Leading Trainer at Chester throughout the season would be a fitting tribute.

We are proud to partner with Chester Racecourse to bring you our very first Pantomime Horse Race and we would like to thank our headline race sponsors Centric Energy for their support. We are thrilled to have received such fantastic support from the local businesses who have joined in the fun by participating in this event and we would like to thank them all. Although this event is fun, it has a serious side and that is to help raise money towards running the hospice. This year it will cost £5.1 million to keep our doors open so we can provide free essential end of life care to people living with a life limiting illness. As a family member of a patient said very recently, “None of us ever really expect to find ourselves in the care of the local hospice, it was not at all what we were expecting. They did everything they could for us!” An independent charity, we are NOT part of the NHS and only receive 20% of our funding from government sources, needing to fundraise for the additional 80%. It’s difficult to imagine people at the end their lives are having to depend on the generosity of the local community to fund their essential care.
We hope you enjoy our race, and have a fantastic day here at Chester Racecourse. Please help us to make this event a fundraising success and donate to our JustGiving page.

Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.

HORSE WELFARE
At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

Last year’s victor CALL ME GINGER looks to have arrived in peak form again and can complete a quick hat-trick after stylish recent successes at Chester and Ascot. RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile, two and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

THANKS FOREVER emerged best of the newcomers when third in a valuable maiden at York last month and has to be considered the one to beat with improvement on the cards. Winged Messenger bumped into one that’s gone in again since on his most recent outing at Beverley and ought to prove the main threat, especially with the step up to 6f likely to bring about further progress. Ottoman Force will be sharper for his debut and is taken to fill the places.

This is a one mile, six and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 61 to 80 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75

Cases can be made for several, but preference is for URBAN OUTLOOK, who matched his previous form on return/handicap debut at Kempton recently, and with that sure have blown away any cobwebs, Andrew Balding’s charge gets the verdict to come out on top now faced with more of a test of stamina. Golden Maverick has enjoyed a fruitful campaign and he could emerge as the main danger, with Dreams Adozen and Gifted Angel another couple worth a mention.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90
Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

PLAY SMARTER
Having performed with credit in several valuable big-field handicaps this year SONNY LISTON is taken to deservedly hit the target. He again has the assistance of Ryan Moore, who partnered the 4-y-o at Royal Ascot where he was a fine second in the Royal Hunt Cup and also when fourth of 19 in a notable handicap at the York Ebor Festival. Millebosc is nicely handicapped based on his exploits in France and he is feared most back at 1m ahead of Empirestateofmind, Liberty Lane and The Gatekeeper

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap and is considered a disadvantage.
