A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR- SATURDAY 1 JULY 2023

Good Afternoon,

Welcome to the Matthew Clark Summer Festival. Today we celebrate the start of a new month with thrilling racing action here on the Roodee. I’m delighted that you have joined us for what is set to be an exciting day ahead.

Racing begins today at 1.57pm with the Champagne Laurent-Perrier EBF Maiden Stakes. Later in the afternoon we will witness the feature race of the day, the Chandon Garden Spritz Handicap Stakes at 3.42pm. The day will close with an exciting new race, the IFAHR (International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities) Trophy at 5.22pm. The race, an Arabian Racing Organisation Group (ARO) 2PA sprint contest previously known as the Za’abeel International Stakes and latterly the Royal Cavalry of Oman International Stakes, has a long history of showcasing top-class sprinters including Dahess and Al Mouhannad, making this six furlong race a must see!

I’d like to extend my thanks to today’s sponsors. Firstly, Matthew Clark who provide wonderful drinks brands across the racecourse, for all our guests to enjoy Secondly, to the IFAHR and ARO for the opportunity to showcase purebred Arabian horses in the welcome return of these incredible animals to Chester for the first time since 2004

We next race here on 14th and 15th July for the Camden Town Brewery Ladies & Gents Evening and the Clogau City Plate Day I hope you’ll return for more great days of racing.

14.A guide to the horse’s recent form and star rating. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

15 Jockey’s photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD

WAYS TO BET

WIN ONLY The most common form of bet You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)

EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet

for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake

STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS

In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting

• Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win

• 5

7 runners (inclusive)

1/4 odds a place 1,2

• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.

PLACING A BET

Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:

1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection.

2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake

3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly

4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe.

5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed

Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

LIV MY LIFE was well held in a very competitive event at Salisbury last time but her previous form suggests that she could be successful in a race of this nature.

Etoile D’alexandre displayed plenty of promise on her debut at York last month and she could prove to be the main threat to the selection. Others to consider are Si Si Senor and Riverview Law.

WIN: LIV MY LIFE

DANGER: ETOILE D’ALEXANDRE

Natchez Trace has to be respected following his win at Southwell, but marginal preference is for SCINTILLANTE. Andrew Balding’s colt put in a career best when second on his handicap debut at Newbury two weeks ago and he remains open to further progression. Restorer has made the frame on his last couple of starts and could do so once again, while similar comments apply to Croachill.

WIN: SCINTILLANTE

DANGER: NATCHEZ TRACE

WHENTHEDEALINSDONE was only narrowly denied over 5f at Windsor last time and Roger Teal’s five-year-old could be hard to stop off the same mark here. Hyperfocus is an obvious threat off just a 2lb higher rating than when winning at Ripon in April. A case can be made for all of the remaining field, but Aberama Gold and Cuban Breeze are arguably the pick of them.

WIN: WHENTHEDEALINSDONE

DANGER: HYPERFOCUS

EQUATORIAL makes his handicap debut following an eyecatching performance when breaking his maiden at Salisbury last month. He kept on to score by four and a half lengths and left the impression there could be more to come He gets the nod from Ararat, who has gone up 3lb for last week’s success at Newmarket, while the grade-dropping Misty Blues rounds out the shortlist following a fair fifth in Redcar’s Two Year Old Trophy on her final start of 2022

WIN: EQUATORIAL

DANGER: ARARAT

Only narrowly denied on the all-weather when last seen in February 2022, PARLANDO rates the one to beat on his comeback. A game winner at Leicester on his racecourse debut in October 2021, the son of Dubawi was bought out of the Charlie Appleby yard for 105,000 pounds earlier this year and he can get the better of O G Beachwear, who finished a fair fourth over C&D in May The unraced Many A Year completes the shortlist.

WIN: PARLANDO

DANGER: O G BEACHWEAR

MALAKAHNA didn’t enjoy much luck in running when third over C&D last month, but is worth another chance off the same mark. The Ian Williams-trained mare has been consistent when tried on the Flat and, given the ground conditions shouldn’t present any problems, there are solid foundations to expect a bold effort. C&D winner Military Two Step is feared most, although El Borracho and Tigerten, a former stablemate of the selection, are also respected.

WIN: MALAKAHNA

DANGER: MILITARY TWO STEP

An interesting renewal at a new venue for one of UK Arabian racing’s oldest races. AJS Saaeq looks a solid miler on his Qatar form, but his class could get him home here now dropped in trip. While it’s notable that Tadhg O’Shea has abandoned last year’s winner EKLEEL ATHBAH for AJS Saaeq, she’s the record holder for this distance in the UK. She’s likely to represent better value and could exploit any chinks in the Qatari horse’s armour, with the stable in good form having had a winner on Monday

WIN: EKLEEL ATHBAH

DANGER: AJS SAAEQ

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

Leading Trainer OF CHESTER 2023 season

will receive A case of champagne, the Bobby McAlpine Trophy and £5,000

The trophy is to commemorate Mr Bobby McAlpine. Bobby was at the heart of Chester Race Company for 30 years, serving as Chairman for 20 years – and Honorary President until the time of his passing in 2021.

He was instrumental in the expansion of Chester Race Company bringing it to where it is today His love of racing came from his uncle telling him about winning the Grand National in 1921 with his horse Shaun Spadah.

His first horse was bought from Ireland when still in his twenties and the love affair with horse racing continued. Many winners followed in the King George V Stakes in 1969 and the ascot Gold Cup in 1970 He then began a small breeding operation breeding the likes of Inglis Drever, a three time winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, and many others.

The Chester Race Company and his family felt offering his trophy for a period of a year to the Leading Trainer at Chester throughout the season would be a fitting tribute.

An open-looking renewal which can go the way of BRAD THE BRIEF who found his first attempt at the top level too competitive on Champions Day at Ascot back in October, but Hugo Palmer’s 6-y-o can add to his already outstanding record fresh. RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile, four and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Hood worn by No. 2. Visor worn by No. 4, 5. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No. 1, 3, 7, 9.

Stewards Note:

PAWS FOR THOUGHT: Following its run on 27/5/2023 it was reported that the horse would prefer a slower surface.

Probable S.P.’s: 3-1 Roman Dragon (GB), 13-2 Cuban Breeze (GB), 7-1 Hyperfocus (IRE), Aberama Gold (GB), 8-1 Whenthedealinsdone (GB), 11-1 Paws For Thought (IRE), 14-1 Hello Zabeel (IRE), 18-1 Absolutelyflawless (GB), 25-1 Princess Shabnam (IRE), Bear Profit (IRE)

Little between the principals in a useful sprint but ABERAMA GOLD arrives at the top of his game and with his Hamilton success having been franked so edges the vote. Whenthedealinsdone has slipped to a handy mark so is feared most having got back on track at Windsor last time. Hello Zabeel is another who can’t be taken lightly in his bid for a third success since joining Charlie Fellowes and Ripon scorer Hyperfocus completes the shortlist.

ABOVE THE CURVE As good as ever when she won the Group 2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud last time and she could be hard to beat with a repeat of that sort of performance. GOLDANA Won the Group 3 Gladness Stakes over 7f here on her debut for Joseph O’Brien in April but the yard may have a stronger presencewithAboveTheCurveatthistrip INSINUENDO Hassomesolidcourseformandherversatility regarding the ground is a bonus. She was a close second to Above The Curve in last season’s Blandford Stakes and she warrants serious consideration. ROSSCARBERY Emerged as a game winner of the Munster Oaks at Cork on her reappearance last month and this ultra-tough mare will be a threat to all despite stepping back in trip. STAY ALERT She registered a career-best so far when winning a Group 3 at Newbury last September and was far from disgraced on her return atYork in May. Respected, although this demands more TREVAUNANCE Made all when she won the Prix de la Nonette over this trip at Deauville last August and her two runs this season read quite well in the context of today. A big player.

VIA SISTINAN AneasywinneroftheDahliaStakesatNewmarketinMay,shestilllookstobeprogressive and has nothing to fear back over this slightly longer trip Worthy of serious thought. COMHRA Has just a Roscommon maiden success to her name but she ran way above market expectations when third in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. She needs another big step forward over this longer trip, though. NEVER ENDING STORY She found only brilliant French filly Blue Rose Cen too good in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly last month, formwhichputsherfirmlyinthepicturehere.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 81 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

A good 3-y-o handicap. ARARAT seemed suited to more positive tactics when getting off the mark in a 7f Newmarket handicap last weekend and might have got off lightly with a 3lb rise. Equatorial should have more to offer on the back of his Salisbury novice win and is second choice ahead of Divine Libra.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This contest is a Novice Stakes, to be run over a distance of seven and a half furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and upwards in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two miles handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80

Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap and is considered a disadvantage.

International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR)

IFAHR was established in 1999 in Paris, for the purpose of co-operation between all Arabian Horse Racing Associations. Their aim is to promote Arabian racing worldwide and to improve the speed, stamina, soundness and temperament of the Arabian horse through racing. Currently 39 countries are full members of IFAHR, including the UK, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

The International Pattern Committee was created in 2005 so that the best Purebred Arabian Group races could have the same recognition as Thoroughbred Group races and that they would be called ÔGroup PAÕ to avoid any confusion with Thoroughbreds. The system embraces Group 1PA, Group 2PA, Group 3PA and Listed PA races with minimum prize fund values for each grade. Races may be up ordown graded, based on the evaluation of the winnersÕ ratings over aperiod of time.

There are two fixture lists published annually for Pattern races, one for Europe, the other for the Gulf States. Since 2011, each has its own international classifications published annually, with the worldÕshighest ever rating for an Arabian racehorse being 134, which was awarded to Al Mourtajez. In Europe and North Africa this year there are 66 Group or Listed PA races scheduled from April to December.

RACE SUMMARY

An interesting renewal at a new venue for one of UK Arabian racing’s oldest races. AJS Saaeq looks a solid miler on his Qatar form however his class could get him home here, dropped in trip Whilst it’s notable that last year’s winning jockey, Tadhg O’Shea has abandoned EKLEEL ATHBAH for AJS Saaeq, she’s the record holder for this distance in the UK She’s likely to represent better value today and could exploit any chinks in the Qatari’s horses armour, with the stable in good form having had a winner on Monday.

HORSE WELFARE

At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.
