Today’s racecard is made up of seven races. The first will leave the starting stalls at 2:10pm as The Deepbridge Handicap Stakes (Class 4, 4¬+yo) (For Gentlemen Amateur Jockeys). Later on in the afternoon our highest value race, The Envirosips Handicap Stakes (Class 3, 4+yo), will take to the Roodee at 4:33pm. Finally, the day will draw to a close with The Deepbridge Innovative Investing Handicap Stakes (Class 4, 3yo) at 5:43pm. I’d like to extend our thanks to today’s sponsors. Deepbridge, our title sponsor of today’s meeting, have been incredibly supportive throughout the 2022 racing season. As well as this race day, Deepbridge also sponsored our annual Polo tournament earlier in the summer here at the racecourse. I’d also like to thank today’s other sponsors – TMT Group and Envriosips. Your support is greatly appreciated by everyone at Chester Racecourse. We will next race here tomorrow, the second and final day of our Autumn Festival, the Autumn Festival Saturday. Following this, we have our final race day of the 2022 season here at Chester on Saturday 24 September. I hope you’ll join us then for a celebration of a racing season unlike any other.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

O

Br

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

VIEW Smart performer who bagged 2m Sandown Listed race under Frankie Dettori in 2019. Fair efforts in only 2 outings last year. Yard’s runners over here always respected. The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD

Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:

3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly.

5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board.

Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)

PLACING A BET

2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake.

WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post.

1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection.

EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake.

Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure.

The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.

4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe.

STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

WIN: LORD UHTRED DANGER: GOZO 2RACE

6RACE

Red N Blue Candy caught the eye when finishing third on debut at Epsom recently and she could take a big step forward with the benefit of that experience. That said, a chance can be taken with YOUNG AND FUN, who is unraced but this 150,000gns purchase is the first foal out of Listed-winning mare Crimson Rosette. Flight Of Angels cost 60,000gns earlier in the year and she is another newcomer to consider.

WIN: YOUNG AND FUN DANGER: RED N BLUE CANDY was denied a hat-trick when dropping back in trip for a competitive sales contest recently but he is entitled to improve on his return to handicap company. He is rated 4lb higher than his last winning mark at Thirsk, which seems fairly lenient given he kept on to win by a length and a half. Ludo’s Landing could make his presence felt back on turf, along with Ibiza Love, who drops in class.

TODAY’S

GIFTED RULER has been disappointing so far this year but he’s becoming too well handicapped to ignore off a mark of 82 and, having landed the plum draw in stall one, Hugo Palmer’s gelding could go well. Consensus De Vega still looks open to plenty of improvement, but the draw could have been kinder to her, while C&D winner Poet’s Magic is one to keep an eye on off just 3lb higher than that victory here in June.

WIN: GIFTED RULER DANGER: CONSENSUS DE VEGA

7RACE

TOP TIPS ANGEL’S WHISPER returned from a spell in France with an impressive victory over a mile at Newmarket a month ago and she is the one to beat today based on that evidence, despite an 8lb rise in the ratings. Madrinho could prove to be the main threat to the selection following his narrow defeat at Brighton last time, while Sucellus and Parys Mountain are others to note.

4RACE

5RACE

1RACE

WIN: FRANKENSTELLA DANGER: : ALPINE STROLL

FRANKENSTELLA stepped up in class to record a respectable second on her latest outing at York last month and a return to this level could be what she needs to bounce back to winning form. A fractionally shorter trip should work in her favour, given she was headed inside the final furlong last time, and she looks capable of delivering. The bang in-form Alpine Stroll merits a lot of respect, along with Emiyn.

WIN: METAHORSE DANGER: LUDO’S LANDING

The races that CHIMED has finished second in on his last two starts have both worked out well, with the winners following up next time out, so off an unchanged mark from his latest assignment, he looks the one to beat. Schmilsson has been struggling in some hot races this year, but this looks easier and Andrew Balding’s colt is now 10lb lower than when starting off in handicaps in June. Oriole is a fascinating contender to keep an eye on on her handicap debut.

WIN: CHIMED DANGER: SCHMILSSON

WIN: ANGEL’S WHISPER DANGER: MADRINHO

LORD UHTRED confirmed the promise that he displayed on debut when narrowly denied over 7f at Haydock when last seen in July and he could take plenty of stopping this afternoon. Gozo was far from disgraced in a competitive novice event at Goodwood recently and he should not be underestimated. Sudden Ambush is another with valid form claims, while any market support for Dragonball Prince would have to be noted.

This is a seven and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Unlike a maiden, which is restricted to horses yet to record a victory, winning horses which have run no more than twice are eligible to run. Deepbridge is a Chester based investment manager specialising in supporting earlystage companies. We have a number of funds which allow appropriate investors to access technology, life sciences and renewable energy investment opportunities. My colleagues and I are passionate about supporting growth-focused entrepreneurs and have provided capital to over 130 companies to date.

That’s a deep question! Look, I’m not going to comment on what might happen with regards to inflation, etc., but what I can categorically state is that the UK continues to be home to some of the most exciting innovations anywhere in the world. This is what we are interested in supporting and I don’t see the abundance of entrepreneurs and great inventions in the UK dwindling anytime soon. We should be very proud of the infrastructure, academia and funding that we have in the UK that empowers forward thinking and innovation.

Ian Warwick, Managing partner at title sponsors Deepbridge Capital, shares with us why he and colleagues were so keen to support the Deepbridge Autumn Festival.

I founded Deepbridge back in 2010, which seems like a long time ago now!

Ian Warwick Managing DeepbridgePartnerCapital

So what types of companies do you invest in?

Ian, firstly it is great to have Deepbridge as the title sponsors of the Friday at the Deepbridge Autumn Festival, can you introduce Deepbridge?

The ‘why Chester’ question is very easy to answer; because it’s a great place. I’m from the northwest of England originally and have been fortunate to live all around the world, including at sea during my time in the Royal Navy, but Chester is now very much home.

Our focus is on the aforementioned sectors or technology, life sciences and renewable energy. Our portfolio companies are early-stage companies, often University spin-outs, across the UK. Innovations we have supported, include everything from rocket propulsion technology, virtual reality software, cancer treatments, novel Omega3 production, energy efficiency technologies, wound care treatments, etc. Elsewhere in this race card you will also see adverts for two of our more consumer-focused companies; Levitex, who are sleep experts who have created a novel foam product for mattresses and pillows which are used by a number of British Olympians and professional sports people, and Saltee, who have produced an exciting range of suncreams and skin treatments. With everything going on in the world, what’s your take on the economy?

TheirExpertsSupportingInField

Having worked with a number of tech companies in the US, I was keen to return to the UK and use my network of like-minded specialists to help UK start-ups and scale-ups.

Sounds fascinating, how did Deepbridge come about, and why Chester?

Why support the Autumn Festival?

Your love for racing goes a bit further than that these days doesn’t it?

You personally have a love for racing don’t you?

We hope the weather is fabulous, we hope everyone has a great day and we hope that we are supporting a day of amazing live sport. Personally, I’m also hoping for some winners! If anybody is reading this, then I hope you gamble responsibly, drink responsibly and above all have a fantastic day.

What are you hoping for today?

We’re also delighted to have a number of the Deepbridge team here today. Although they have been asked to be on their best behaviour, you can probably still spot them!

Absolutely, it’s the best sport in the world. I’ve been fortunate to visit courses across the globe and been to some of the world’s most iconic events, but there is nowhere quite like Chester. If I was at all poetic I could eulogise far more eloquently, but simply there is nothing like the splendour, the majesty and raw excitement of watching horses in full flight. I hope everyone is reading this whilst bathed in Chester-sunshine and enjoying a glass of wine… why would you want to be anywhere else?

Haha. Yes, I am now fortunate (most of the time) to also co-own a 6 year old horse named Complete Unknown. Having been around race courses for as long as I can remember, owning a horse seemed like the next logical step, although a glass or two of wine with my co-owner was the courage we both needed to take the plunge. Having had our first win earlier this year as well as a couple of outings at Ascot, I’d naturally love to have a horse race at Chester one day.

The Deepbridge Festival has a nice ring to it doesn’t it? As proud Cestrians, we are delighted to be supporting a local showpiece event. As an organisation we have had a long relationship with Chester Racecourse and regularly sponsor races, the Deepbridge Autumn Festival is merely a progression of that relationship. As a locally based business we are proud of our successes in supporting early-stage companies create and grow the technologies and innovations of tomorrow, but we are somewhat of Chester’s best kept secret… supporting our friends at the Racecourse today helps us tell our story.

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular seven furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 85 RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a two mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

This is a one mile and two and a half furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage. DESCRIPTION

PLAY SMARTER CHIMED has had a stunted start to his career but he improved at Newcastle 3 weeks ago and the thriving winner has gone on to boost the form, so he’s well worth a chance to open his account now.
