Chester Racecard - Saturday 28th May

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR- SATURDAY 28 MAY 2022

Good Afternoon, Welcome to the ICM Stellar Sports Roman Day. One of our most popular race meetings for families, today is all about enjoying the spring weather in the company of one of Britain’s favourite sports. Today we have seven races on the card for you. The first will begin the day’s excitement at 2:01pm with The ICM Stellar Sports Novice Stakes. Later in the day we’ll get to see The Chester Heritage Festival Handicap Stakes at 3:45pm before the day finally draws to a close at 5:30pm with The Handicap Stakes. I’d like to extend my thanks to today’s sponsors. ICM Stellar Sports who supported us throughout the Boodles May Festival and have again taken the first race of the day. The TOTE who are a long-standing partner of the racecourse and whose betting stations can be found across the racecourse today. The Chester Heritage Festival who are doing such important work to celebrate and educate on the history of our home city and whose involvement in Roman Day is so important. Finally, Tomahawk Steakhouse who are expanding into a range of new locations including into our city of Chester very soon. Everyone here at Chester Racecourse is grateful for your support. Don’t forget, for Roman Day we have a number of events and activities taking place today. We have some Roman soldiers ready for pictures, some great craft classes by a specialist company, inflatable gladiator jousting, archery classes and much more. Head out to the Open Course to explore everything on offer, free of charge for racegoers. We next race here at Chester on 11 June for the Edinburgh Gin Summer Saturday. Tickets are available to book online and I hope we’ll see you again then for another fun Saturday of making memories.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS William Haggas’ yard has been in blistering form of late and RAZEYNA could provide the Newmarket handler with more success. The daughter of Kodiac was just touched off at Newcastle following a successful Newbury introduction but, now returned to turf, she looks to have been found an ideal opportunity to regain the winning thread. Doux Esprit kept on well enough behind a potentially smart rival at Leicester, while Burgoo Beauty is another to consider.

RACE 2

WIN: RAZEYNA

A chance is taken with course winner RUSSELLINTHEBUSHES, who was set a stiff task on her reappearance when down the field in a 0-95 handicap at the May Festival here, but this looks more suitable and David Evans’ filly can strike now back on her previous winning mark. Origintrail, Torvi and Esken Rose step into handicap company for the first time and are capable of making an impact. Princess Shabnam is another to consider.

RACE 3

WIN: RUSSELLINTHEBUSHES

RACE 4 RACE 5

DANGER: HEART OF SOUL

BOARDMAN always looked to be in control when getting up late on at Thirsk and a 3lb rise could prove lenient as he attempts to follow up last year’s comfortable success in this contest. The veteran Oh This Is Us doesn’t have much to find with the selection from their meeting at Haydock, and his course record is another reason for optimism. A tough task awaits the admirable Mykonos St John now backing up for the third time in seven days. WIN: BOARDMAN

DANGER: OH THIS IS US

This can go the way of local trainer Hugo Palmer and SELF PRAISE, who looked in need of a step up in trip when runner-up over 5f at the May Festival here. Bred to excel over further, the Twilight Son colt can fend off the challenge of Zephina, who has threatened on more than one occasion to break the maiden. Drafted is another open to improvement following a promising debut at York’s Dante meeting. WIN: SELF PRAISE

RACE 6

DANGER: ORIGINTRAIL

SPIRIT MIXER has shown marked improvement from three to four and displayed further signs of progression when disposing of his rivals with ease at Chelmsford. Andrew Balding’s charge was raised 9lb, but the son of Frankel can take another step forward and complete the hat-trick. Heart Of Soul performed well at the May Festival and has since landed a double of his own. He is feared most, although Fox Vardy is interesting with cheekpieces applied for the first time. WIN: SPIRIT MIXER

DANGER: ZEPHINA

A case can be made for most in this field and Kaatibb, who attracted plenty of market support when runner-up at Lingfield last time, is an obvious candidate. However, Roger Varian’s BROADSPEAR looks the type to improve now moving up in trip and gets the vote on his handicap bow. Sharp Combo returns to the track after undergoing a gelding operation and can also figure. WIN: BROADSPEAR

RACE 7

DANGER: DOUX ESPRIT

DANGER: KAATIBB

Considered good enough to take his chance in the Blue Riband Trial at Epsom on his penultimate start, TEUMESSIAS FOX bumped into a smart prospect in a Salisbury handicap subsequently and the well-bred three-year-old can get off the mark on turf. Natchez Trace met trouble in running at Wolverhampton on his latest outing and is respected, while Fairmac cannot be discounted either. WIN: TEUMESSIAS FOX;

DANGER: NATCHEZ TRACE

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length.

The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

race one

This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of seven furlongs and 127 yards. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

(Penalty Value £5076) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-old fillies which have been rated from 86 to 85. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

A competitive staying handicap with the vote in favour of OLD PORT. David Evans’ charge has gone from strength-to-strength in all-weather handicaps since the turn of the year, gaining his fourth win from 5 starts at Wolverhampton in April, and he may have more to offer now his stamina is drawn out further. The hat-trick seeking pair Spirit Mixer and Heart of Soul head up the dangers, whilst Liverpool Knight is also worth a look on debut for his new yard.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs and 127 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 105. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

(Penalty Value £10308) RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

Stewards Note: BROADSPEAR: Following its run on 9/4/2022 it was reported that the horse was hampered two furlongs out. PLAY SMARTER

BROADSPEAR shaped well after 8 months off when runner-up in a Thirsk maiden and, with this longer trip likely to be in range, he gets the nod to go one better on handicap debut. Wootton’sun could still have more to offer and is not taken lightly now returning to slightly calmer waters, while Roudemental’s recent third at Doncaster is backed up by the clock and he’s unlikely to be far away if seeing out this longer trip, too.
