THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
A very warm welcome to Cheltenham Racecourse for Gold Cup Day, the magnificent finale to the 2026 Cheltenham Festival. We are delighted to welcome a sell-out crowd to the Home of Jump Racing for what promises to be an extraordinary day and the biggest occasion in the sport.
After a fantastic week of thrilling racing and unforgettable moments, everything now builds towards the crowning glory of the Festival. Today is the day where champions are made and legends are written into racing history. The highlight of the afternoon is, of course, the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup at 4:00pm, the most prestigious race in Jump racing. This year’s renewal looks extraordinarily open, setting the stage for what promises to be a fascinating and fiercely contested battle between the best staying chasers from both sides of the Irish Sea. Leading the British challenge is The Jukebox Man, the King George VI Chase winner, whose success would provide a sensational moment for his owner Harry Redknapp. Standing in his way is the reigning champion Inothewayurthinkin, who returns looking to defend his crown in what looks a deep and exceptionally competitive field. The action begins at 1:20pm with the JCB Triumph Hurdle, where some of the most exciting young talents in the sport take centre stage. It looks another wide-open contest, with the top four in the market evenly split between British and Irish contenders, setting the tone for a thrilling afternoon ahead. Racegoers can look forward to a superb supporting card throughout the day, including the William Hill County Handicap Hurdle at 2:00pm, the Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Steeple Chase at 2:40pm, and the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at 3:20pm, each bringing together highly competitive fields and top-class performers.
To begin the day, William Hill will host their live tipping Panel in The Retreat from 11:30am, where Nick Luck will be joined by ITV Racing presenter Leonna Mayor, 43-time Cheltenham Festival winner Barry Geraghty, and 20-time Champion Jockey Sir AP McCoy to provide expert insight ahead of the afternoon’s racing. Away from the track, racegoers are encouraged to visit The Orchard, where you can enjoy an outstanding collection of premium brands including Boodles, Debenhams, Holland Cooper, Chapel Down, Lavazza, Bottlegreen, Glenfarclas, Brooklands, Gaucho, and Red Bull. Today’s racing would not be possible without the continued support of our sponsors, and we extend our sincere thanks to JCB, William Hill, Albert Bartlett, and Boodles for their valued partnership. Your continued loyalty makes this the biggest day on the racing calendar, and we are delighted to welcome you to what promises to be a truly historic occasion. It has been a fantastic week here at Cheltenham, filled with outstanding racing, incredible performances, and a vibrant Festival atmosphere. Let’s hope we finish this remarkable week in style with another unforgettable day of racing. Enjoy your day at Cheltenham the pinnacle of Jump racing. We look forward to welcoming you back to this iconic sporting venue again soon.

TRIUMPH HURDLE RACE DESCRIPTION The JCB Triumph Hurdle
is the Championship race for juveniles (four-year-olds) and is historically one of the most open races at The Festival. Thanks to the introduction of the Fred Winter, it usually means the field is much smaller and more competitive. As is usual in a Grade 1 Championship race, all horses carry the 11st 2lb, apart from Highland Crystal, Noemie de La Vis, Selma de Vary and Tenter Le Tout, who as fillies’, get a 7lb allowance.

PONIROS
Poniros sprung an almighty shock in our opener 12 months ago when winning at odds of 100/1, lowering the colours of East India Dock and Lulamba in the process. He looked beaten turning for home when under the drive of Jonjo O’Neill but continued to stay on stoutly to reel in Lulamba, who himself showed a brilliant attitude but ultimately it was not to be for the Nicky Henderson runner and instead it was Mullins who picked up his fourth consecutive Triumph Hurdle.

HISTORY
The JCB Triumph Hurdle certainly has a rich and interesting history. The race was introduced to the Racing Calendar in 1939, and was originally held at Hurst Park in Surrey. That race was won by Grey Talk, who was trained by George Batchelor and ridden by Serge Rochet. Although no race took place from 1940-1949 due to the war, in the following years it was regularly contested by horses trained in France with six of the first seven winners French-based. As the leading event in the National Hunt calendar exclusively contested by juveniles, you would have thought that the two-mile and one-furlong (3,420 metres) contest would be a good source for Champion Hurdle winners, but Clair Soleil was the first of just four to achieve the feat when winning the 1953 Triumph Hurdle before bagging Champion Hurdle glory in 1955, both times under Fred Winter. Prince Charlemagne proved a notable Triumph winner in 1954 as the Tommy Carey-trained gelding provided a certain Lester Piggott with one of his twenty hurdle race victories. Fred Winter was back in the winners’ enclosure in 1961 when partnering the Ryan Price-trained Cantab to victory and 12 months on, the legendary trainer saddled Beaver II, his second winner of the race, ridden this time by Josh Gifford. When Hurst Park closed its doors, the Triumph Hurdle was transferred to Cheltenham for the 1965 renewal, although at that point it took place at the April meeting until it became part of The Festival in 1968. It was at this stage that the race attracted its first sponsor – the Daily Express, whose name was associated with the race from 1965-1996. Arguably, the most impressive Triumph Hurdle winner came in the shape of the Brian Swift-trained Persian War who won the race in 1967 under Jimmy Uttley, before winning a hat-trick of Champion Hurdle titles in 1968, 1969 and 1970. In fact, until 2015, Uttley was the joint most successful jockey in the history of the race having also won on England’s Glory in 1968 and Boxer in 1971. In 1985 a certain Nicky Henderson recorded his first Triumph Hurdle winner when Steve Smith Eccles partnered First Bout to victory. The race has proved kind to Henderson, who has won the race a further six times courtesy of Alone Success (1987), Katarino (1999), Zaynar (2009), Soldatino (2010), Peace And Co (2015) and Pentland Hills (2019), making him the leading trainer in the race’s history.
Although better known for winning Classics, Sir Michael Stoute got in on the act when the Sheikh Mohammed-owed Kribensis took the spoils in 1988 before becoming the third horse to go on to Champion Hurdle glory in 1990. The Elite Racing Club took over the sponsorship of the race in 1997 and saw the Ted Walsh-trained Commanche Court gallop to victory under Norman Williamson. The Irish have a remarkable record at The Festival and recently have asserted their dominance over this race as well – Scolardy in 2002, when current sponsor JCB took up the reins, and more recently Our Conor, Tiger Roll, Ivanovich Gorbatov, Farclas, Burning Victory, Quilixios, Vauban, Lossiemouth and last years winner Majborough. Ivanovich Gorbatov’s success earned Barry Geraghty the honour of being the most successful jockey in the race’s history. His tally of five is unmatched, having also won aboard Spectroscope, Zaynar, Soldatino and Peace And Co. In 2007, the tiny Alan King-trained Katchit became only the fourth horse to win the Triumph Hurdle before following up in the following season’s Champion Hurdle. Twelve months later Paul Nicholls won the first of two Triumph Hurdles thanks to Celestial Halo, Zarkandar adding the second in 2011. In 2020 Goshen unseated at the last in terribly unlucky fashion when ten lengths clear. Burning Victory capitalised to give Willie Mullins his first win since 2002 but in 2021 it was the turn of Quilixious to steam up the hill in a much less dramatic fashion. Last year Willie Mullins found himself with a fifth winner in six years, as Poniros returned the 100/1 winner. He followed in the footsteps of Vauban, Majborough and the four-time festival winner, Lossiemouth.

THE WILLIAM HILL COUNTY
HANDICAP HURDLE
(PREMIER HANDICAP) RACE DESCRIPTION The William Hill County Hurdle, a two mile and 179-yard handicap hurdle for five-year-olds and upwards, is one of the most fiercely contested races of the entire Festival. The aim of a handicap is to ensure a level playing field for all and this is achieved by allocating different weights to each of the runners based on what they have achieved on the racecourse so far - see how the 156 rated Ndaawi carries 1lb more than the 155 rated Absurde.
KEY TRENDS 8 of the past 16 winners were trained by Willie Mullins
20 of the past 27 winners were aged 5 or 6
15 of the past 20 winners were rated in the 130s
LAST YEAR’S WINNER
KARGESE
The winners continued to flow for Closutton on our final day as Kargese looked a class above when winning under a confident ride by Paul Townend. The well backed favourite was positioned in midfield as the field was taken along by Our Champ and Spirit d’Aunou. She stalked her way into contention as they thundered down the back straight before taking it up rounding the home turn. A great jump at the last sealed the victory for Mullins and Townend.
PREMIER HANDICAP Run over two miles, 179 yards. 8 hurdles to be jumped.

THE MRS PADDY POWER
MARES’ STEEPLE CHASE
(REGISTERED AS THE LIBERTHINE MARES’ CHASE) RACE DESCRIPTION The Grade 2 Mrs Paddy Power
Mares’ Steeple Chase is a fairly new addition to The Festival, providing an excellent opportunity for high-class racing mares under National Hunt rules and perhaps creating a springboard for a potential Gold Cup winner like the great Dawn Run. Run over two miles, four and a half furlongs, those running in the race will have to carry 11st 2lb, with penalties assessed on the class of race they have won over the past 18 months - 3lb for the winner of a Grade 2 chase and 5lb for the winner of a Grade 1. See how Spindleberry carries 11st 7lb after winning the Grade 1 WillowWarm Gold Cup at Fairyhouse last April.

Conceding weight all round, Mark Walsh kept her on the inside of her right-hand jumping stablemate. She travelled beautifully throughout the contest and always looked to have Allegorie De Vassy covered, regardless of her fall at the last. She was another impressive winner for the JP McManus team.

THE ALBERT BARTLETT
NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE
(REGISTERED AS THE SPA NOVICES’ HURDLE) RACE DESCRIPTION
The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle is run over the stamina-sapping trip of three miles and this contest attracts the top staying hurdlers of the future. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the senior ranks. In this Grade 1 race, all runners will carry 11st 7lb apart from Park Princess, who as a mare receives a 7lb allowance and carries 11st.

DAWNRUN–40THANNIVERSARY Today marks the 40th anniversary of Dawn Run’s Gold Cup victory back in 1986. She is still the most successful mare in the history of National Hunt racing, winning the Champion Hurdle in 1984 before her Gold Cup win two years later. Foaled in 1978, she was then trained by Paddy Mullins and owned by Charmian Hill, ridden in all her major success by Jonjo O’Neill. She lowered the colours of the brilliant Sea Pigeon in the 1983 Champion Hurdle, who himself was a two-time champion. The Irish Champion Hurdle and French Champion Hurdle also appear on her list of honours. Rather than remain over hurdles, she was instead sent chasing by connections, which ultimately secured her status as a legend of the National Hunt game. Throughout her time over fences she developed into a top-class staying horse, with her career culminating in the 1986 Gold Cup, where she battled up the hill to defeat Wayward Lad and Forgive ‘n Forget becoming the first mare in 12 years to win the Gold Cup and the only ever horse to complete the Champion Hurdle-Gold Cup double.

RACE DESCRIPTION The Boodles Cheltenham
Gold Cup is the most prestigious steeplechase found anywhere in the world. The cream of British and Irish staying chasers will be lining up for what is known as the Blue Riband of steeple chasing, and the small matter of a £351,687 first prize. Many of the past winners of this race such as Best Mate, Kauto Star and Denman to name just three have become legendary names in the world of National Hunt racing. Inothewayyurthinkin could well join the illustrious list should he defend his crown. Once again, as is usual in Championship races, all horses carry the same weight, in this case 11st 10lb.
KEY TRENDS 23 of the 26 winners had run in 12 chases or less
4 of the past 7 winners were trained by Willie Mullins

It wasn’t to be a third in a row for Galopin Des Champs who instead was forced to finish second behind the supplemented Inothewayurthinkin. The 2024 Kim Muir winner had a slow start to his season but in the Irish Gold Cup he looked more back to his normal self and duly confirmed this promise when powering up the hill 12 months ago to win by an emphatic six lengths. Galopin Des Champs in turn finished 12 lengths ahead of the third placed Gentlemansgame.

FESTIVAL
HISTORY
The Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, run over three miles and two-and-a-half furlongs, has a history longer than most races at The Festival. The first ‘Cheltenham Gold Cup’ took place in July 1819 and was a Flat race over three miles on Cleeve Hill, overlooking the present racecourse. The inaugural winner, Spectre, won a prize of 100 guineas for his owner.
It wasn’t until 12 March 1924 when the race was run as we know it now, although in those days it took place on what is now the Old Course and was overshadowed by the National Hunt Chase. That first renewal was won by the five-year-old Red Splash, who earned connections £685! The race was first abandoned due to frost in 1931 and in 1937 due to flooding, but the five intervening years saw the most prolific horse in the race’s history – Golden Miller. He won five consecutive Gold Cups between 1932 and 1936 and also managed a Grand National for good measure in 1934. The Vincent O’Brien-trained Cottage Rake became the first multiple winner in the post-war era winning all three renewals from 1948-50. Such was his success that he helped to popularise the Gold Cup, and The Festival itself, with the Irish public. During the 1960s the legendary Arkle cemented his name in racing’s Hall of Fame by winning all three renewals from 1964-66. Such was Arkle’s superiority prior to his final victory that he was sent off the 1-10 favourite and the Tom Dreaper-trained icon remains the shortest-priced winner in the race’s history. Perhaps the most remarkable feat by a trainer came in 1983 when Michael Dickinson saddled the first five finishers. Bregawn, ridden by Graham Bradley came out on top but can you name the other four? Captain John, Wayward Lad, Silver Buck and Ashley House, in case you were left scratching your head. Dawn Run created another piece of history in 1986 when Paddy Mullins’ mare became the first, and only, horse to date to win both the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle. A new era of domination began in 2002 when Best Mate, trained by Henrietta Knight, won the first of three consecutive Gold Cups.
His final victory in 2004 confirmed him as only the fourth horse to have won the race three or more times. The Paul Nicholls-trained Kauto Star outclassed his rivals in 2007 but twelve months later he had no answer to his strong-travelling stablemate Denman. In 2009, the pair locked horns again but with Denman only just recovered from a heart condition, Kauto Star gained revenge and became the first horse to regain the Gold Cup. In 2013, Bob’s Worth gave Nicky Henderson his second Gold Cup winner in three years following the success of Long Run in 2011. The 2014 renewal saw Lord Windermere prevail in a dramatic renewal and 2015 had its fair share of drama as Coneygree became the first novice since Captain Christy in 1974 to lift the Gold Cup. Recently we have seen trainers win the race for the first time with Don Cossack, Sizing John, Native River, Al Boum Photo, Minella Indo and A Plus Tard landing the spoils for their respective trainers. Al Boum Photo not only ended Willie Mullins drought in the Gold Cup but then went onto win it again in 2020. The same happened in 2021 when Henry de Bromhead won the race for the first time with Minella Indo. The duo returned in 2022 to try and reclaim the crown but were unable to defeat the 2021 runner-up A Plus Tard, who delivered a spine tingling performance. A Plus Tard was unable to follow up his 2022 success and instead the race went the way of racing’s latest superstar, Galopin Des Champs, who then won again in 2024, giving Willie Mullins his fourth winner of the race in the last 12 years. Inothewayurthinkin halted Galopin Des Champs in his bid for a third successive Gold Cup and today returns to defend his crown.

An open-looking renewal, with preference for JANGO BAIE who ran as well as ever when a close fourth in the King George, despite the track not looking ideal for him. Upped further in distance, he is taken to reverse the Kempton form with Gaelic Warrior, who is respected given his Festival PLAY SMARTER record for his leading trainer, while The Jukebox Man is unlikely to give up his unbeaten record over fences without a fight.

Wonderwall was kept wide by Rob James and jumped beautifully the whole way round. At the penultimate ditch he began to creep closer but still had plenty of ground to make up as they went down the back straight. Coming down to the second last he was one of four in with a genuine chance, this included It’s On The Line, who eventually would finish runner up again for the third consecutive year. Wonderwall began to idle in the finish and ended up only winning by a neck to the fast finishing favourite.

SIXTH RACE
The Point-to-Point community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of amateur jockey Sam Lee on Friday 6th March. Our heartfelt condolences go to Sam’s family and to the many friends he made throughout the sport. Sam, who was just 27, was a well-known and much-liked figure on the British Point-to-Point circuit. His enthusiasm and presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and his loss has come as a shock to everyone involved in the sport. Among the highlights of his riding career was partnering Golan Fortune to victory in a Listed handicap hurdle at Cheltenham in November 2019. Sam will be fondly remembered across the pointing community; not only for his achievements in the saddle, but for his character, his smile, his passion for the sport, and the friendships he made along the way.

Wodhooh ended things on a high for Gordon Elliott who had endured a tricky week up until the last race of the Festival. She provided the trainer with a fourth win in the race since 2017 and in the process made it 7-7 over hurdles. Danny Gilligan made good headway two out before getting to the front before the last. She jumped it well before staying on well up the hill to bring the curtain down on the 2025 Cheltenham Festival.

Health and Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Cheltenham Racecourse. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located above the parade ring behind the See You Then Bar.
Feedback
We are always pleased to hear from our customers and are grateful for any feedback you can provide about your visit today. There is a short Feedback Form available by scanning the QR code below:
Notices
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
Parade Ring Access
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
In-Running Betting
Please note that in-running betting is not allowed in any public areas of Cheltenham Racecourse. Any racegoer found to be in breach of this rule will be removed from the racecourse. For the full terms and conditions of entry, please visit the racecourse website.
Touts
JCR is taking strong action against touts. Touting is seen by some as a legitimate way of buying or selling last minute tickets but many tickets sold by touts are fraudulent or counterfeit. An injunction has been issued preventing touting at the Racecourse. You could yourself be breaking the law by dealing with a tout. Genuine tickets sales are available at all the entrances or in advance via the Racecourse website.
Terms and Conditions
All you do at the Racecourse including transactions as well as entry onto the Racecourse are subject to the Terms and Conditions. For details see the Racecourse Website www.cheltenham.co.uk. A copy is also available at the Racecourse Office.
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency Hospital.
