Cheltenham Racecard - Friday 2nd May

Page 1

WELCOME TO

Hello and a very warm welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for the final fixture of our 2024/25 season – and a very special one it is too!

Tonight’s Race Night fixture celebrates the amateur side of our sport, giving amateur riders and trainers the unique opportunity to chase victory at the Home of Jump Racing With seven fiercely contested Hunter Chases taking place over various distances, it’s set to be a thrilling evening of grassroots competition. Good luck to all those taking part!

We are extremely grateful to those supporting today’s meeting, including Bottlegreen, Venatour Sports Travel, Junior Jumpers, the Jonathan Neesom Memorial, the Cheltenham & South West Racing Club, Brooklands Watches, and the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars We extend a warm welcome to all their guests and supporters, we hope you have a fantastic evening with us

After racing, don’t rush off, local favourites The Chip Shop Boys will be performing trackside from 8.15pm, delivering a high-energy set packed with rock and pop classics to keep the party atmosphere going.

Before we close the season, it’s only right that we reflect on what has been another unforgettable year at Cheltenham, with Festival 2025 once again providing some truly iconic moments. The four days were filled with sunshine, snow, drama, and a roaring crowd, creating an electric atmosphere throughout Willie Mullins continued his domination with a staggering 10 winners across the week, but the elusive dream of a third consecutive Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup with Galopin Des Champs slipped away. Instead, the moment belonged to Inothewayurthinkin, handing Gavin Cromwell his first ever Gold Cup win, a truly emotional result

In the Unibet Champion Hurdle, the racing world was left stunned as State Man faltered late on, allowing Golden Ace to capitalise and deliver one of the shocks of the Festival, with Constitution Hill and Brighterdaysahead unable to leave their mark

We also paid an emotional tribute at the start of the week to the late Michael O’Sullivan, and the poignancy continued on Wednesday when his two previous Festival winners Marine Nationale and Jazzy Matty both stormed to victory within minutes of each other Marine Nationale’s commanding win in the BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chase confirmed his status as a new superstar of the two-mile chase division

While this season may now be drawing to a close, preparations for next season are already well underway and Annual Memberships for 2025/26 are now on sale

Be sure to secure your place early as we continue to enhance the experience for all our racegoers.

Thank you for being with us today and throughout the season We wish you a wonderful evening and look forward to welcoming you back in October.

Warm wishes,

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING: Friday 24th October

The Showcase

For fans and participants alike, it is like returning to their spiritual home and excitement and anticipation for the season ahead is off the scale There are seven competitive races to enjoy and a variety of live entertainment. Don’t miss the buzz of the beginning.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

Probable S.P’s: 13-8 Barton Snow (IRE), 11-4 AJet of Our Own (IRE), 15-2 Franigane (FR), 9-1 Bobbarelli (GB), 12-1 Kansas du Berlais (FR), 16-1 Envious Editor (IRE), 66-1 Missed Tee (IRE)

BARTON SNOWmade a successful hunterdebut in quite stylish fashion at Stratford in March and should prove at least as effective back at 2m given how he went through the race, so he’s a confident selection to follow up A Jet of Our Own took this race last year and has to be respected based on his form, though he may find conditions placing too much emphasis on speed this time around. Franigane may prove best of the rest

Pioneering equine vision research showed the clarity of jumps could be improved by changing markers from orange to white. So that’s what we did. horsepwr.co.uk

2024:WHATAGLANCE 9 11 7 MrMurrayDodd 11-1 (Tom Britten) 9 ran

Blinkers worn first time by No 1. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn first time by No 3.

Tongue Strap worn by No 1, 3, 7.

Stewards Note:

Probable S.P’s: 9-4 Fairly Famous (IRE), 4-1 Douglas Longbottom (GB), 5-1 Alaphilippe (IRE), 8-1 Glenmount (IRE), Learntalot (IRE), 11-1 Tzarmix (FR), Walk Away (IRE)

Successful on each ofhis 2 previous appearances atthis meeting, FAIRLYFAMOUS clearlywasn’t himself when pulled up in the Fox Hunters’ Chase at the Festival in March. However, he confirmed his well-being when finishing runner-up between the Flags since and is fancied to make a bold bid to come out on top again here. Douglas Longbottom has some excellent point form to his name and he’s feared along with Alaphilippe, in a race containing plenty of in-form sorts.

EACH-WAY BETTING TERMS

Working alongside the Racecourse Association (RCA), bookmakers have introduced standard each-way betting terms across Jockey Club Racecourses. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.

Fewer than 3 runners: win bets only, no places offered

3 or 4 runners: all to win Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms for 3 or 4 runners, this must be at 1/5 odds a place 1-2

5 to 7 runners (inclusive): 1/4 (one quarter) odds for finishing 1st or 2nd

8 or more runners: 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd

Handicap races with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive): 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd

Handicap races with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive): 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th

Handicap races with 22 or more runners: 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th

In Memory ofJonathan Neesom 1952 - 2024

You were as likely to find Jonathan standing in a field near Guilsborough, training his binoculars on those galloping past the hovel, as broadcasting his definitive take on the Grand National to Racing TV subscribers just 24 hours earlier

He loved Jump racing, from the Cheltenham Gold Cup through the most arcane of handicap hurdles to the paddock judgement required to spot the live one among a field of newcomers at Kingston Blount. Sharp of eye and tongue, good luck to you with a non-jigger if he was writing the close-up comments.

No surprise he loved cryptic crosswords, too; always part of the post-racing ritual once all other puzzles were run. Even the most unsatisfactory clue had to be fathomed, part of the fun being to analyse its worth immediately afterwards.

We miss him. We will always remember him on his favourite evening of the year.

THE ROYAL GLOUCESTERSHIRE HUSSARS

The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars (RGH) were first raised in Cheltenham in 1795 and are today known as C(RGH) Squadron The Royal Wessex Yeomanry (RWxY), which is the UK’s only Regiment of Army Reserve tank soldiers.

Our soldiers are volunteers with normal jobs and lives who give up some of their spare time to train as crews for the Challenger 2 tank. As reserve members of the armed forces, they have access to a wide range of opportunities, including pay and pension, fitness training, sports and travel.

The Challenger 2 tank is crewed by a commander, gunner, loader and driver The tank offers firepower, manoeuvrability and protection and is capable of destroying the enemy up to 5km away.

The RGH maintains strong links across the county and has a long tradition in riding including previous winners at Cheltenham. Members also compete in Polo, Eventing, Show Jumping and Cross Country

RACECOURSE DEBUT

DECLARED RUNNERS 11 2024: REBELDAWN RISING (IRE) 10 11 12 MrDale Peters 5-2 (David Kemp) 10 ran Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn first time by No 9. Tongue Strap worn by No 3, 5, 8, 9, 10 Hood, Tongue Strap worn by No 7. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 1.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Jet Plane (IRE), 9-2 Highstakesplayer (IRE), 6-1 Take All (IRE), 7-1 Cap Du Mathan (FR), 17-2 Rebel Dawn Rising (IRE), 12-1 Frere d’Armes (FR), 14-1 Autonomous Cloud (IRE), 28-1 Knockmoylan (IRE), 40-1 Fix At All (FR), 50-1 Solomon Grey (FR), 200-1 Uncle Frankel (IRE)

Having lost no caste in defeat when finding just one too good at Aintree last month, JET PLANE makes plenty of appeal down markedly in class. Highstakesplayer will be a big threat if close to his best on this hunter debut, while Cap du Mathan is taken to reverse Ludlow placings with Take All and he is also feared.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
