Cheltenham Racecard - Friday 24th October

Page 1

WELCOME TO

Hello and a very warm welcome to Cheltenham Racecourse for the opening fixture of the 2025/26 season – The William Hill Showcase!

After a busy summer of preparation, it’s a pleasure to welcome you back to the Home of Jump Racing For many of us, returning to Cheltenham feels like coming home, that unmistakable mix of excitement, anticipation and world-class sport. Over the summer, we’ve worked hard to enhance the customer experience across the racecourse, and we’re delighted that you’ll begin to see these improvements in action today.

Following the success of the drinks control release in 2025, we’ve now removed all drinks restrictions across the Club enclosure for 2025/26. You can take your drink with you and enjoy it wherever you choose to watch the action. The safety of the horses is off the utmost importance to us and our stewards will be carefully monitoring the area. Our refurbishment programme continues, with Cottage Rake and Mill House transformed into the stylish new Prestbury View, meaning five of the seven bars in the Main Grandstand have now been upgraded. These changes, alongside clearer signage, make it easier to navigate and meet friends around the course The Vestey Food Court becomes The Green Grazer, championing local produce as part of our sustainability commitment. Prosecco joins the range for the first time this season.

Today we unveil our new state-of-the-art sound system providing clearer commentary throughout the course, developed in partnership with RaceTech. We’re also pleased to introduce RaceIQ technology from RMG, providing racegoers with data-led metrics Make sure you head to the Winner’s Enclosure for the Preview Show at 12:30pm as our hosts Aly Vance and Martin Kelly preview the day’s card, alongside speaking to the day’s leading contenders and racing greats. Perfectly setting you up for the day’s action on the track.

The GBR Jockey Gym also returns, offering interactive demonstrations, family fun and a chance to meet the Shetland ponies. You can even test your own skills in The Commentator’s Box. Don’t miss the new Cheltenham 50:50 Raffle, debuting today, raising money for good causes and for the lucky winner 50% of the prize pot!

Today’s seven-race card is headlined by the squareintheair.com Handicap Steeple Chase, featuring, Matata, Unexpected Party, Calico and the Irish raider Jasko des Dames. The day also sees Festival 2025 winner Jazzy Matty return, along with 2025 Unibet Champion Hurdle runner King of Kingsfield, looking to continue his fine start over fences, also among those to watch.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to today’s race sponsors, whose generous support makes this day possible: William Hill, Holland Cooper, Foundation Developments, oddschecker and Square In The Air.

We’re thrilled to have you back as we launch another unforgettable season at the Home of Jump Racing and be sure to join us again tomorrow for what promises to be another great day at Cheltenham.

Enjoy your day.

BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

THE RACEIQ JUMP INDEX

The rise of statistics in sport has transformed how sporting events are broadcast, played, and followed and data has become essential for performance analysis and planning. RaceiQ’s metrics aim to bring horse racing to a modern, data-savvy audience. The metrics are all powered by GPS trackers carried on every horse and produce:

LENGTHS GAINED JUMPING (LGJ)

The lengths gained, or lost, by a horse at each obstacle in a race, relative to the field.

JUMP INDEX

This quantifies a horse’s jumping ability at each obstacle, in a race, and throughout its career as a score out of ten. It compares the efficiency, speed and fluency of a horse’s jumps against all those recorded in the RaceiQ database.

SPEED LOST

The difference in a horse’s speed (in mph) from entering the Jumping Envelope (the area 30m before and after a fence) to landing.

ENTRY SPEED

The horse’s speed (in mph) when entering the Jumping Envelope.

FINISHING SPEED PERCENTAGE (FSP)

The speed a horse completes the final four furlongs in comparison to the whole race; An FSP of 110% reflects a horse covering the final furlongs 10% quicker than they travelled through the race as a whole.

STRIDE LENGTH

The distance a horse covers with a full cycle of a stride. We can measure both the average and peak stride length of a horse (in metres).

These can be used to analyse previous runs and attempt to predict future performance. A great example was Ballyburn at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival. His career Jump Index of 6.8 out of 10 before the race was lower than all but one of his rivals, and on the day, he scored a Jump Index of 5.8 out of 10, which was the worst of the seven runners. The Lengths Gained Jumping metric then quantified the impact of this poor jumping, highlighting that despite only finishing eight and a half lengths behind the winner, Lecky Watson, he forfeited nearly 20 lengths to him through slow jumping in the race.

We are delighted to be using the RaceIQ data specific to Cheltenham for the first time this season. It will enhance the racegoers experience and bring a whole new aspect to race analysis for our visitors each day.

Probable S.P’s: 3-1 King of Kingsfield (IRE), 7-2 Country Mile (IRE), 9-2 Alnilam (FR), 13-2 Relieved of Duties (IRE), 8-1 Addragoole (IRE), 11-1 Centara (IRE), 12-1 Cloonainra (IRE)

COUNTRY MILE seems sure to improve on a considerate chasing debut when second to Alnilam at Uttoxeter recently, so he’s taken to reverse the form with that rival on much more favourable terms and come out on top. King of Kingsfield didn’t need to improve to resume winning ways in a Grade 3 at Punchestown last week and has a leading chance at the weights, with the aforementioned Alnilam also respected in an intriguing event.

Competitive affair but CHARGING THUNDER has an attractive hurdles mark to exploit relative to his Flat ability and given the yard he represents, he’s highly likely to return to this sphere on his game. He looks the most persuasive option, though second-season hurdler Rubber Ball is promising, while Torquay Road arrives from Ireland in top form.

Plenty worth considering but preference is for PERCY SHELLEY, who looked a useful prospect when making a winning hurdling debut at Uttoxeter last month and he’s since walked over at Ludlow. He can maintain an unbeaten start in this sphere at the expense of Don Virginia, who bolted up in a Worcester handicap 4 weeks ago and now returns to novice company. RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
