WELCOME TO
Welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for Festival Trials Day. As ever, Festival Trials Day provides us with a very exciting preview to Cheltenham Festival itself now only 45 days away. Our commiserations go to Ascot regarding their loss of their race meeting last weekend, but we are delighted to be staging the Clarence House Chase again at this meeting and we welcome all Ascot members who have joined us at Cheltenham today. Racing will get underway at 12.05 pm with the JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle Race, with the last runners going to post at 4.10pm. Today’s feature race is the Paddy Power Cotswold Chase, where we see Ahoy Senor returning to try to repeat last year’s success: also this year we see the first running of the Unibet Hurdle at this meeting where all interest will be on Lossiemouth as she takes on her elders for the first time following her successes in the JCB Triumph Hurdle and in the Ballymore Champion 4yo hurdle at Punchestown. Today’s card is full of interest as we welcome back old favourites and hope to see some stars of the future. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported today’s meeting: JCB, Timeform, Paddy Power, My Pension Expert, Unibet, McCoy Contractors and SSS Super Alloys. We hope they and their guests have a very enjoyable day here today. After racing The Wickermen will be ready and waiting to entertain you in the Centaur. Although please be aware there will be limited access. With just over 6 weeks to go until Cheltenham Festival, the highlight of the Jumps season is getting ever closer. We have availability remaining for tickets on all four days as well as a variety of hospitality packages, so please visit our website, here you will find the various options along with plenty of information about the event, hospitality and entertainment. Please visit www. thejockeyclub/cheltenham.co.uk to find out more. In the meantime, we wish you a splendid day here at Cheltenham Racecourse for Festival Trials Day, our second Premier Raceday in the calendar.

White is the new Orange Pioneering research into how horses see the world is helping reduce risk in racing The colour used on hurdles and fences at all racecourses across Britain has changed from orange to white. • Horses see in a reduced number of colours and don't see orange and red as humans do. • Research by Exeter University showed that the clarity of obstacles in racing for horses could be improved by the use of white, and British racing made the change. • Effects on any changes in faller rates are now being monitored. • Changing the colour on fences is one part of a bigger body of work by the Horse Welfare Board and British Racing to continuously reduce risk in the sport. HANDICAPS EXPLAINED Around 60 per cent of all races run in Britain each year are handicaps. But what actually is a handicap? In simple terms, they are races where the runners carry different weights to give them an equal chance of winning. So how are the weights calculated? Once a horse has run at least three times in a Flat race, or run in no more than two Flat races in Britain and won at least one of them, they will be allocated an Official Rating, also known as a handicap mark. This rating is calculated by a team of professional handicappers employed by the British Horseracing Authority and is based on the level of form shown. In subsequent races if a horse runs better than it’s rating then it may well be raised and likewise if it performs below it’s rating then it will be reduced. Ratings start from around 30 at the lower end of the scale with the average top level horses rated roughly between 115 and 125. These ratings are converted to lbs for handicap purposes. Most handicaps are designed for horses within a specific range, for example those rated between 71 & 85. So the rating not only decides the weight that a horse will carry, it also decides which races it can run in. In this instance a horse rated 85 is 5 higher than a horse rated 80 so considered 5lb better and hence carries 5lb more in the race. In theory, the weight difference should see them cross the line together. Without handicaps, the best horses would almost always win. The guarantee of a winner may sound attractive but ultimately uncompetitive races would negatively impact Owners, Racegoers and Bookmakers.
EXAMPLE Handicap for horses rated from 71-85; highest weight 9st 7lb Horse A Rated 85 Weight 9st 7lb Horse B Rated 84 Weight 9st 6lb Horse C Rated 80 Weight 9st 2lb Horse D Rated 75 Weight 8st 11lb Horse E Rated 71 Weight 8st 7lb 29

Never beaten by SP
ABBREVIATIONS EXPLAINED C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at this course. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course.
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well-fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders in the racecard you can identify which horses run well at this course and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

TIMEFORMVIEW Landed a maiden hurdle Cartmel last May and has produced fine efforts in defeat on his last 3 starts, including when third in a 10-runnerGrade 2 here (3m, good to soft) last month. Preference is for Irish-raider ANTRIM COAST, who went down all guns blazing in a useful novice event here last time, form which was boosted when the winner followed up in a strong handicap on New Year’s Day. The unbeaten Gidleigh Park is an exciting PLAY SMARTER prospect and is greatly respected, albeit he’s likely to be plenty short enough in the betting, all things considered. Johnnywho is a promising type and merits respect. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.ANTRIM COAST (IRE) 2.GIDLEIGH PARK 3.JOHNNYWHO (IRE)

NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
