Welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for the start of 2024. We hope you’ve all had a wonderful Christmas and are wrapped up warm looking forward to a great afternoon of racing. There has been some great racing on both sides of the Irish Sea over the festive period as ever providing plenty of clues as we approach the 2024 Festival and the centenary of the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup. I am sure both today and Festival Trials Day at the end of the month will continue to whet the appetite for four fantastic days racing in March. Before we dive into today’s races, we’d like to bid a fond farewell to a true racing legend. The esteemed horse, Frodon, will be parading in the Cheltenham Racecourse parade ring at 11:45 am. Frodon, a previous Cheltenham Festival winner with a remarkable win in the 2019 Ryanair Chase, is set to retire from the sport. Join us in celebrating his outstanding career as he takes a final lap around the Cheltenham Racecourse. Today’s first race gets underway at 12.20pm with the last runners going to post at 3.50pm. In addition to the great racing, the free Family Fun Zone will be providing appearances from Bluey and The Dapper Chaps as well as plenty of other entertainment for younger children. We’d like to take this chance to thank all of those who have supported today’s card, including The Sun, Close Brothers, Paddy Power and Dornan Engineering. We wish all of them and their guests a wonderful day here with us. After racing, Tommy and the Fuse will be performing live in The Centaur, so don’t rush off – make sure you stick around and keep the festivities going. After today, we will next be racing on January 27 with Festival Trials Day. With seven races on the card, it will provide the perfect chance to finalise your choices and favourites before all roads lead back to the Cheltenham Festival in March. We’d like to thank you all for joining us today and very much look forward to seeing you again soon.

White is the new Orange Pioneering research into how horses see the world is helping reduce risk in racing The colour used on hurdles and fences at all racecourses across Britain has changed from orange to white. • Horses see in a reduced number of colours and don't see orange and red as humans do. • Research by Exeter University showed that the clarity of obstacles in racing for horses could be improved by the use of white, and British racing made the change. • Effects on any changes in faller rates are now being monitored. • Changing the colour on fences is one part of a bigger body of work by the Horse Welfare Board and British Racing to continuously reduce risk in the sport. RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment.
