Welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for the second day of the Christmas Meeting and another day of top-quality racing not to be missed. The feature race today is the Virgin Bet December Gold Cup to be run at 1.50pm. The ﬁrst of today’s races will get underway at 12.05pm with the last at 3.35pm. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have supported racing today, including JCB, Andrew Wyke, Quintessentially, Virgin Bet, The Sun and Albert Bartlett. We very much hope that they and their guests have a wonderful day here today. With Christmas around the corner, there are plenty of opportunities to get into the festive spirit: take the children to visit Santa’s Grotto and allow Santa and his elves to help with Christmas crafts. Pampered Pony rides will also be available starting at Santa’s Grotto in the Tented Village. The countdown to the centenary of the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup continues and the book “Let no memories fade” compiled by Chris Pitt recognises the heroes of the last hundred years. This is available within the shopping village and at the gift shop. We wish you all a wonderful day with us here at Cheltenham Racecourse and would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. VIRGIN BET PREVIEW 12:05 JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle Plenty of unexposed young Horses – the first runner to catch the eye is the Paul Nicholls trained Kabrat Du Mathan. A winner at Clairefontaine back in July on very soft going over 2 miles 1 furlong. Nicholls does very well with his novice hurdlers and as always wouldn’t be sending it to Cheltenham for this trial if they didn’t think the horse had ability. The other runner of Interest is the Dan Skelton trained Kourosh a very easy winner on his first start over hurdles at Wetherby in November. 12:40 John Wyke Memorial Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase Likely soft ground over the new course will take some staying. Lightly raced Nicky Henderson trained Wiseguy has course form with a decent 2nd back in November 2022, remains very unexposed and a horse of potential particularly off the current mark of 129 which is a 7 pound increase after his Exeter win in November. The Paul Nicholls trained Mofasa, a winner at Huntingdon in November could also be in contention. 13:15 Quintessentially Handicap Chase The Ante Post market was dominated by two runners Calico and In Excelsis Deo. Calico has recent course form, resulting in a 4 pounds rise for Saturday to a mark of 143 and currently top rated. The Interesting runner is In Excelsis Deo – very lightly raced and low mileage and a very good run at Cheltenham back in October keeping on well to just be denied in third place. Looks to be on a very fair mark of 132 and could possibly go off as Favourite. 13:50 Virgin Bet December Gold Cup Handicap Chase A very competitive handicap and you could put a case forward for much of the field. A runner that stands out is the locally trained Fugitif, another one with course experience having come fourth at the old course back in October behind the progressive Stage Star, this is a strong traveling sort who should handle the course, stay the trip, and adapt to conditions. The other to keep an eye on is the top weight the classy Fakir D’oudairies campaigned at a much higher level falling just short and runner up in the Ryanair at the Cheltenham festival in 2021, 12 stone over 2 and a half miles in soft going could prove too much but expecting a bold run.

14:25 Favourite From The Sun Now Daily Handicap Chase Class 1 over 3 miles 2 furlongs on the new course, the classy Protektorat is the stand out runner on form with a very decent record at Cheltenham. Despite top weight of 12 stone on ratings and form Protektorat represents a decent each way proposition. Also in contention is the Nicky Henderson trained City Chief who ran well in defeat at Cheltenham in November. 15:00 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle The likely Favourite, the Nicky Henderson trained Shanagh Bob in the famous colours of Shishkin is very well regarded by his yard. This looks like a rehearsal for bigger and better things ahead and looks a likely winner. The Dan Skelton trained Illico De Cotte who is inexperienced but also one to keep an eye on. 15:35 Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Mares’ Handicap Hurdle The lucky last and an interesting runner is the Anthony Honeyball trained Good Luck Charm, a recent winner back in November at Wincanton off a mark of 107. Raised 10 pounds looks a bit of an ask but this horse is progressive and looks a decent each way selection. Coquelicot an impressive winner at Kempton end of November now running off a 5 pound higher mark is another runner of interest. Protektorat

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualiﬁed paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
