THE NOVEMBER

MEETING

CHELTENHAM RACECO URSE F R I D AY 1 7 N O V E M B E R OFFICIAL RACECARD - £4.50

WELCOME TO

Welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for the first day of The November Meeting. With more than 60,000 racegoers attending over the three days of The November Meeting, this represents our largest race meeting outside The Festival, so it is great to see such good entries from Great Britain and Ireland this weekend. Today is Countryside Day, with a number of activities taking place in the Parade Ring prior to racing, culminating in the Parade of Champions where we are delighted to welcome the equestrian superstars: William Fox-Pitt, Carl Hester, Tina Cook, Yasmin Ingham, Ros Canter, Charlotte Dujardin and David Doel. There is a silent auction taking place throughout the day – please visit their tent just before the Shopping Village – where all funds raised will be donated to the Countryside Alliance and The British Equestrian Team – Mission Paris. All our thoughts are currently with Graham Lee and his family following his fall at Newcastle last Friday evening. Graham rode five winners at The Festival, his most notable success Inglis Drever for Graham Wylie in the Stayers Hurdle. By clicking on the QR code below, you have the opportunity to donate to the Injured Jockeys Fund, supporting Graham in his time of need. We look forward to six great races today and would like to thank all of those supporting today’s racing: SSS Super Alloys, Lycetts Insurance, Paddy Power, Glenfarclas, TrustATrader and Valda Energy and hope that they and their guests have an enjoyable day. After racing, the Tattersalls Cheltenham November Sale will be taking place in the Tattersalls Sales Arena, while musical entertainment will be provided by Radio 1 DJs Rickie and Melvin in The Centaur from 4.15pm. Thank you all so much for joining us today, and we wish you a wonderful time with us here at Cheltenham Racecourse and hope you will be back to join us tomorrow or Sunday.

PARADE OF CHAMPIONS The Countryside Alliance will join us to raise funds for the British Equestrian Team: Mission Paris for a Parade of Champions at 12:15 in the parade ring.

Ros Canter

• 2023 has been the ‘Year of Ros’. A historic win at Badminton this spring with Michele Saul’s British bred Lordships Graffalo was followed up with double gold at the European Championships with a dominant performance. Weeks later, this was followed up with a win at Pau Five Star with rising star, Izilot DHI. • Ros made her British team debut in 2017 and in her three team appearances, she’s always won team gold! • Ros, a sports science degree graduate, was crowned world champion in 2018 at Tryon in the USA with her legendary partner Allstar B. He was 17hh plus, and she’s a petite 5’2” but they were one of eventing’s great partnerships.

Yasmin Ingham

• Yaz grew up on the Isle of Man and competed in Pony Club and showing before getting the eventing bug. A week’s training with Jane Holderness-Roddam sparked her dream to represent her country at the highest level – that was 2012, ten years on, she’s living that dream. • In 2013 she made the move to the mainland to be based with Eddie and Sue Davies and Janette Chinn in Cheshire where she still is today. • Her first senior call up was in 2022 with the precocious talent, Banzai du Loir where there were individuals but made a remarkable debut to take the Individual World Championship gold. • Yaz and Banzai carried their form into 2023 and a win at Aachen earned them a call up for the European Championships where they were part of the gold medal winning team.

Tina Cook

• With racing and show jumping in her blood from parents Josh and Althea Gifford, Tina was always going to excel at whatever equestrian discipline she chose. • A grounding in youth eventing system set her on a path to make her senior debut for Britain at the 1993 European Championships where she took individual silver with Song & Dance Man. • Four decades later, she can lay claim to 14 championship medals over nine European Championships, four World Championships and two Olympic Games. • She was part of the London 2012 team that took silver and at the Beijing Games in 2008 she brought home bronze medals in the team and individual. • This year she announced she was retiring from competitive riding but is still active and supporting her daughter Isabelle, a medal winner in eventing’s youth ranks.

William Fox-Pitt MBE

• Championship medals came early to William when he started eventing in the late 1980s before making his Badminton debut aged 24 with Chaka in 1993 where they finished seventh. • He’s gone on to complete the world famous event 22 times including winning twice with Tamarillo in 2004 and Chilli Morning in 2015. • Throughout a five decade career, William has dominated at five star level – recording a staggering 14 wins with a record six at Burghley.

• His British team record is equally impressive. A senior debut in 1995 gave team gold, the first of a further six team titles and a total of 20 medals across European, World and Olympic championships. • William is a four-time Olympian and only last month travelled to Maryland where he finished second in the five star. Could a sixth Olympic appearance be on the cards for William at the age of 55?

Carl Hester MBE

• Carl’s first taste of horses was on his home island of Sark in the Channel Islands where they’re the only form of transport but in the early 1980’s he headed to the mainland to work at the Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy and one of he most revered riding careers in equestrian world was born. • By 1992, he was making his Olympic debut under the mentorship of Dr Wilfried Bechtolsheimer and has represented Britain consistently ever since – with a staggering 11 different horses. Few riders get more than a few horses to Grand Prix level in a career, let alone to represent their country. • With his protégé Charlotte Dujardin, Carl has been instrumental in the prolonged success of the British team as well as being the envy of others for his sympathetic training methods, excellent horsemanship and treating horses as individuals. • Carl has been British National Champion on 11 occasions and has represented his country at championship level 19 times, winning 14 medals along the way. • His love of representing his country and producing horses was every apparent at this year’s European Championships where he helped Britain to team gold with new partner, Fame

Charlotte Dujardin OBE

• A prolific childhood showing career developed into a love of dressage. A chance to have lessons in 2007 with Carl Hester set her on the path to becoming Britain’s most successful dressage rider ever. • Under Carl’s tutelage, she honed her skills and bought her first ‘proper’ dressage horse with some money left to her by her grandmother which she trained to Grand Prix. At the same time, she was working with a young horse Carl had bought in Holland….Valegro. • Charlotte and ‘Blueberry’ made their Grand Prix debut in January 2011. It was of course a winning one and the rest, as they say, is history. Six championship appearances, 14 medals…10 of them gold. Before Blueberry retired in 2016, Individually they were Olympic champions twice, World champions once and European champions on two occasions. They still hold the World Record scores in all three Grand Prix level tests. • Keen to prove she was no one horse wonder, Charlotte was back on the team in 2018 and has featured on every team since. In 2021, she introduced the world to her pocket rocket, Gio who won four medals that year across Tokyo and Hagen championships. • 2022 saw the debut of her newest star, Imhotep who made the World Championship team aged just nine and they took team silver. A year on and with more experience, the duo impressed at this summer’s European Championships being instrumental in the team gold as well as taking two bronze medals individually. ‘Pete’ will be one to watch in Paris!

BETTING EXPLAINED Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
