WELCOME TO

Welcome back to Cheltenham for the first day of our new season. It is difficult to believe that over seven months have passed since this year’s Festival as we reflect on some magnificent performances we witnessed in March. The rain of recent months may not have been appreciated by those holidaying in the UK, but have enabled Jon Pullin, Alastair King and their Grounds team to deliver a track in near-perfect condition for The Showcase meeting, resulting in a healthy turnout of runners from here and Ireland. It is great to see Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore with us today, who teamed up to deliver such a memorable moment on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival with Honeysuckle’s farewell win, and we also welcome Lucinda Russell, successful with Corach Rambler in this year’s Randox Grand National with runners today making the 700+ mile round trip from her Kinross stables. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who are supporting racing today including Squareintheair.com, Trustatrader, Skybet, The Abu Dhabi Digital Exchange, The Horse Welfare Board, Close Brothers and Foundation Developments. We wish them all a wonderful day with us here at Cheltenham. In addition to the racing, please pay a visit to the Hall of Fame which, as well as being updated to reflect our celebration of the centenary of the Cheltenham Gold Cup this season, is also home today and tomorrow to The Syndicate Village where racing clubs and syndicates will be on hand to talk through the fun and thrills of racehorse ownership. Today we open the Mandarin Restaurant, located on the ground floor of the main grandstand, where racegoers can walk in and request a table with prices starting at £65 for two courses of delicious pub favourites. Tables are available for 2-8 people and will be available on a first come, first served basis. Thank you so much for joining us as we get the Jump racing campaign of 2023/24 underway here at Cheltenham Racecourse, and we hope you have a fabulous day. Martin St Quinton Chairman

Ian Renton Managing Director, Jockey Club West

EXPERT VIEW

A quick way to see a horse’s past performance. These are its recent finishing positions.

How the experts rate the horse’s chances:

Look out for Letters: C D CD BF

= Has won at this course = Has won over this distance = Has won over this distance at this course = Was a beaten favourite

MORE INFORMATION ON THE FORM / P F U R CO B S r

= New racing season = Missed racing season = Was pulled-up and didn’t finish the race = Horse fell = Rider unseated = Horse refused to race = The horse was forced out of a race by a loose horse = Horse was brought down = Horse slipped = The horse ran around a jump or took the wrong course in a flat race = Disqualified

d Bold form figures = performance in all-weather (Flat) or Point-to-Point (Jump) races

2. BHA rating = the higher the number, the better the horse. 3. Timeform view and TFR rating 4. HORSE’S TRAINER & THEIR LOCATION

Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race. 5. JOCKEYS Listen out for any jockeys who are having a successful day. OTHER USEFUL DETAILS 6. Owner’s colours worn by the Jockey 7. Saddlecloth number 8. Horse’s name 9. Days since the horse last run 10. Horse’s age 11. Jockey’s weight (stone and Ibs) 12. The horse’s breeding – father (sire) and mother (dam) 13. Horse’s owner 14. Horse’s breeder 15. Birthplace of horse (outside GB)

BETTING EXPLAINED Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

Our Champ won nicely on his first outing for Chris Gordon and could be capable of better again so he’s second PLAY SMARTER choice ahead of Coolnaugh Haze, another who has made a positive start for a new stable. Fergal O’Brien’s good recent record in this also earns Glorious Zoff a place on the shortlist. TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.AFADIL (FR) 2.OUR CHAMP (IRE) 3.COOLNAUGH HAZE (IRE)

Working alongside the Racecourse Association (RCA), bookmakers have introduced standard each-way betting terms across Jockey Club Racecourses. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. Fewer than 3 runners: win bets only, no places offered 3 or 4 runners: all to win. Where a bookmaker wishes to depart from this default position he may offer place terms for 3 or 4 runners, this must be at 1/5 odds a place 1-2 5 to 7 runners (inclusive): 1/4 (one quarter) odds for finishing 1st or 2nd 8 or more runners: 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd Handicap races with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive): 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd Handicap races with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive): 1/5 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th Handicap races with 22 or more runners: 1/4 odds for finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th

THIRD RACE

It’s hard to know exactly what EL ELEFANTE achieved in scoring by a wide margin on her Perth hurdling debut, but she really impressed with how she powered clear in the straight and looks the type to go on to better things. Encanto Bruno proved a big let-down at Galway, but he was PLAY SMARTER mightily impressive at Bellewstown prior to that, so can be given another chance, while Katate Dori is an interesting newcomer to this sphere for a yard that has started the autumn well.

White is the new Orange Pioneering research into how horses see the world is helping reduce risk in racing The colour used on hurdles and fences at all racecourses across Britain has changed from orange to white. • Horses see in a reduced number of colours and don't see orange and red as humans do. • Research by Exeter University showed that the clarity of obstacles in racing for horses could be improved by the use of white, and British racing made the change. • Effects on any changes in faller rates are now being monitored. • Changing the colour on fences is one part of a bigger body of work by the Horse Welfare Board and British Racing to continuously reduce risk in the sport. NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
