ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP

Hello and a very warm welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for the last fixture of our 2022/23 season – and a very special one it is too!

Today’s meeting allows amateur riders and trainers to compete for the ultimate dream of winning at the Home of Jump Racing with seven fiercely fought Hunter Chases staged over a variety of distances It is always a thrilling evening of action and we can’t wait to see you all out there – good luck to everyone involved!

As always, our thanks go to all of those who are supporting racing today, including Lycetts Insurance Brokers, KDTA, Ineos, and The Wyke Family We will be remembering John Wyke and Gabe Mahon as part of our races today and we are delighted to also welcome both The Barry Wells Trust Box4Kids and the Royal Gloucester Hussars. We wish them, their guests and families a wonderful day with us

After racing, BBC Radio One’s Jordan North will be ready and waiting in the Centaur to keep the party going. Jordan will take to the stage to entertain racegoers well into the evening, and you can still get your hands on wristbands for the event for just £15 from the sales team at The Centaur entrance.

We can’t sign-off from the 2022/23 season without taking a look back at some of our highlights. There is no doubt that the magical hour of incredible sport which we witnessed on the Tuesday of this year’s Cheltenham Festival will remain with us for a very long time. Between them, both Honeysuckle and Constitution Hill helped to create an unforgettable afternoon of racing that we feel incredibly privileged to have been a part of

Elsewhere, Corach Rambler secured back-to-back wins in the Ultima Handicap Chase – just weeks before travelling up to Aintree and romping home victorious in this year’s Randox Grand National. Galopin Des Champs and Bravemansgame battled it out until the last in this year’s Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup, with the former pulling away to secure victory for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend in very classy style.

Throughout the year we’ve seen thrilling action across all of our cards, while off the course initiatives such as the ‘Love Our Turf’ campaign have kicked-off and been a great success

It’s always sad waving goodbye to the end of another great season here at Cheltenham Racecourse, but rest assured that we’re already full-swing into planning for 2023/24 – and we can’t wait to welcome you all back in October.

Until then, we wish you all a wonderful day with us

DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING: Friday 27th - Saturday 28th October THE SHOWCASE

The Showcase is the curtain raiser to the 2023/24 Cheltenham season, the thundering hooves will return, once again to the Home of Jump Racing

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

PLAY SMARTER

A chance is taken on last year’s runner-up ENVIOUS EDITOR bouncing back to form. Fier Jaguen is a possible big threat but his tendency to jump to his right is a concern. Caryto des Brosses also has leading form claims but mainly at 3m+ so it remains to be seen whether he’s fully effective over this much shorter distance.

LIFT ME UP has a good strike rate in points and made a successful Rules debut in a Newbury hunter in March so, with more to come, he looks the solid option. All Is True has won his last 3 outings in points with plenty to spare, so he looks the main threat ahead of Theshoddytradesman, although the market will be informative.

THE BARRIE WELLS TRUST BOX4KIDS

The Barrie Wells Trust is a charity founded and funded by Barrie Wells MBE and has an initiative called Box4Kids. The charity is unique in that it does not ask for any monetary donations, just simply the kind donation of executive boxes.

Box4Kids invites seriously ill and disabled children to enjoy a sporting or entertainment event in the luxury of an executive box. Comfortable and safe, a box is an ideal environment for a child who normally is not able to attend sporting, entertainment events due to their illness or disability Most importantly, it’s the perfect way to make a child feel special for the day, giving them a VIP experience to remember

The Trust collaborates with over 200 sports clubs, entertainment venues and box holders who kindly donate their boxes. To date, over 14,500 children and their families have enjoyed a Box4Kids experience. The Barrie Wells Trust is one of the chosen charities of The Jockey Club The partnership began in August 2016, with box donations and money can’t buy experiences at all 14 iconic racecourse venues across the UK.

Getting involved is easy. Whether you’re a business, a club, event venue or an individual, we’re inviting you to support the Trust by donating your executive box.

If you are interested in donating your executive box, or would like to find out more about the Trust and Box4Kids, you can contact Barrie directly at barrie.wells@barriewellstrust.org or via the office on 01524 590600

Gabe Mahon was a lifelong horse racing and country pursuits enthusiast, rarely missing a meeting at Cheltenham. He travelled the length and breadth of the country running his horses and cheering winners’ home, many ridden by his children, of whom he was immensely proud. Gabe would have been honoured to have a race in his name today. Our family would like to thank all the team at Cheltenham and The Jockey Club for helping us celebrate his memory

White is the new Orange

Pioneering research into how horses see the world is helping reduce risk in racing

The colour used on hurdles and fences at all racecourses across Britain has changed from orange to white.

•Horses see in a reduced number of colours and don't see orange and red as humans do.

•Research by Exeter University showed that the clarity of obstacles in racing for horses could be improved by the use of white, and British racing made the change

•Effects on any changes in faller rates are now being monitored.

•Changing the colour on fences is one part of a bigger body of work by the Horse Welfare Board and British Racing to continuously reduce risk in the sport

THE ROYAL GLOUCESTERSHIRE HUSSARS

About us:

The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars (RGH) were first raised in Cheltenham in 1795 and are today known as C(RGH) Squadron The Royal Wessex Yeomanry (RWxY), which is the UK’s only Regiment of Army Reserve tank soldiers.

Our soldiers are volunteers with normal jobs and lives who give up some of their spare time to train as crews for the Challenger 2 tank. As reserve members of the armed forces, they have access to a wide range of opportunities, including pay and pension, fitness training, sports and travel.

The Challenger 2 tank is crewed by a commander, gunner, loader and driver The tank offers firepower, manoeuvrability and protection and is capable of destroying the enemy up to 5km away.

The RGH maintains strong links across the county and has a long tradition in riding including previous winners at Cheltenham. Members also compete in Polo, Eventing, Show Jumping and Cross Country.

IMPORTANT NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
