4. HORSE’STRAINER &THEIR LOCATION

Look out for the summary of leading course trainers before each race.

BETTING EXPLAINED

Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.

Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet.

Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

PLAY SMARTER

This is fiercely competitive but WINDTOTHELIGHTNING still appears to have a lot of improvement left in her and she’s fancied to complete a hat-trick. Dollar Bae and Lone Star, another pair of improving types, could pose a serious threat, while there are a whole host of others for whom a case can be made.

PLAY SMARTER

The one with the most obvious potential is Irish-raider MEDIANARANJA, who delivered a fluent round of jumping when opening heraccount from the front at Limerick. This istougherbut heropening mark looks fair and she may well be equal to the task. The Nicky Henderson-trained duo Arclight and Under Control rate the main dangers, with the former feared most, for all that she is the apparent second-string judged on jockey bookings. Komedy Kicks and Obsessedwithyou are live each-way candidates.

White is the new Orange

Pioneering research into how horses see the world is helping reduce risk in racing

The colour used on hurdles and fences at all racecourses across Britain has changed from orange to white.

•Horses see in a reduced number of colours and don't see orange and red as humans do.

•Research by Exeter University showed that the clarity of obstacles in racing for horses could be improved by the use of white, and British racing made the change

•Effects on any changes in faller rates are now being monitored.

•Changing the colour on fences is one part of a bigger body of work by the Horse Welfare Board and British Racing to continuously reduce risk in the sport

DECLARED RUNNERS 20 2022: QUEENS GAMBLE (IRE) 4 10 6Jonathan Burke 16-1 (OliverSherwood) 16 ran Tongue Strap worn first time by No 5. Hood worn by No 16.

QUITE THE GETAWAY: Following its run on 24/2/2023 it was reported that the horse ran green.

Probable S.P’s: 9-2 El Elefante (IRE), 6-1 Dontyawantme (IRE), 9-1 Mellificent (IRE), 12-1 Flying Fortune (IRE), 16-1 Charmian’s Place (IRE), Quite The Getaway (GB), 18-1 Leave Her To Me (GB), Mighty Moth (IRE), 20-1 Blue Baloo (IRE), Mary (IRE), 22-1 Bobbi’s Beauty (IRE), Flight of Freedom (IRE), Lily Luna (IRE), 40-1 Micks Jet (IRE), Whisperonthewind (GB), 66-1 Whispering Gold (GB), 100-1 Inion Tiogair (IRE), Milan Cyclone (GB), Walkinthecotswolds (IRE), 150-1 Quick of The Night (GB)

PLAY SMARTER

Lots with chances but the vote goes to DONTYAWANTME who just holds the edge on form and also looked to have more to offer when third in a Sandown listed bumper last time. Mary seems sure to build on her debut Warwick second and rates the chief threat, although Irish point winner Bobbi’s Beauty and Musselburgh-scorer El Elefante both need considering too along with the re-hooded Whisperonthewind.

IMPORTANT NOTICES

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
