THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Hello and welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for Festival Trials Day!
We have a bumper nine-race card taking place today, featuring some of the most exciting horses in training across England and Ireland Many Cheltenham Festival favourites are among those declared across the card, with the day providing the perfect opportunity to seek out final clues for those iconic four days in March.
Racing will get underway at 11.40am with the JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle Race, with the last runners going to post at 4.10pm. Today’s feature race is the Paddy Power Cotswold Chase, which was won last year by the JP McManus-owned Chantry House. This time around the likes of last year’s Randox Grand National winner Noble Yeats is set to line-up at 2.25pm, alongside fellow Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup prospects Protektorat and Ahoy Senor, trained by Lucinda Russell.
This week we were saddened to hear the news of the passing of Lucinda’s father, Peter Russell, who was a big supporter of the sport and a part-owner of Ahoy Senor. The whole team here would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Russell family and all of those who knew Peter, who we know will be sadly missed
Edwardstone and Energumene are also set to face-off in the rescheduled Albert Bartlett Clarence House Chase, which gets underway at 1.20pm – so make sure you bag yourself a good spot to see what is sure to be a great race. Meanwhile Delta Work and Minella Times are among those declared for the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase at 12.40pm.
It really is set to be an exceptional day of racing and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have supported today’s card, including Paddy Power, Glenfarclas, JCB, DahlBury, Albert Bartlett, SSS Super Alloys, Ballymore and Timeform. We wish them all a wonderful day here with us
Before racing at 11am the Dahlbury Stallions from Chapel Stud will take to the parade ring, so make sure you head over to see the likes of Planteur, Bangkok and Walzertakt strutting their stuff
After the last, The Wickermen will be ready and waiting to entertain you in The Centaur, while The Tattersalls Cheltenham January Sale will also make a return in the Tattersalls sale ring
The next time we welcome you back to the Home of Jump Racing will be for the pinnacle of the season, the Cheltenham Festival – and we can’t wait Tickets for the first three days remain available to buy on our website, along with plenty of information about the event, hospitality and entertainment. Please visit www.thejockeyclub/cheltenham to find out more.
In the meantime, we wish you a wonderful day here with us
Kind Regards,

SENSORY ROOM AT CHELTENHAM RACECOURSE
The Jockey Club has become the first horseracing organisation in the country to open a permanent sensory room on its premises, with facilities at both Cheltenham and Aintree Racecourses that will be available to anyone of any age who may need it on a raceday.
Following a consultation between The Jockey Club and the ‘Autism in Racing’ project, the decision was taken to open up facilities at both racecourses, which launched on race days at Cheltenham’s November Meeting and on Boylesports Becher Chase Day at Aintree in December respectively
A sensory room is a specially designed room which provides comfort to people who have sensory processing problems, which can include people with autism.
Cheltenham Racecourse’s sensory room is situated in 4037 on the main grandstand and is open at all racedays Cheltenham Racecourse would like to thank Daniel Heaton Managing Director of AMPM, who has been paramount in helping us create the sensory room.
As a local contractor, ampm construction are extremely proud to be involved in the creation of this amazing new facility at Cheltenham Racecourse. The new sensory room is a huge boost for local children visiting the course and is something close to our hearts. ampm relished the chance to be a part of the project and we would like to thank all oursuppliers and key partners for making it happen so quickly.

PLAY SMARTER
If there’s a runner here with the ability to be a factor in the Triumph itself it’s surely JUPITER DU GITE, who lowered the colours of a well-touted Nicky Henderson runner on his British debut at Newbury and there was certainly no fluke about that performance despite his unflattering SP Comfort Zone is already a winner at this Grade 2 level but he didn’t have much in hand come the line with Dixon Cove closing fast and that rival may reverse the form this time on these terms.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.

PLAY SMARTER
Several of these are open to improvement, not least FIRE DANCER, who overcame a 27-month absence when scoring on his first start for Venetia Williams at Ludlow where he produced an accurate round of jumping. The 7-y-o is very appealing off a light weight for a yard that has landed this race 3 times in the past. Dalamoi is next on the list, albeit only marginally as both Malinello and Stage Star merit serious consideration, too.

DELTA WORK is the class act in this field and there’s good reason to think he will land this before bidding for back-to-back wins at the festival. Singing Banjo was only a short head behind the selection at Punchestown last time and is getting plenty of weight, so he’s an obvious danger, while Plan of Attack could return to form.

PLAY SMARTER
Lots with chances but FUGITIF has returned an improved model this term and a 10lb rise for his most impressive Chepstow success could still underestimate him. Il Ridoto has shaped well to twice claim fourth spot over C&D this winter and seems sure to be on the premises again, especially if the fitting of cheekpieces ekes out some improvement. Brave Seasca and Nocte Volatus complete the shortlist.

PLAY SMARTER
The performance of A Plus Tard obviously took plenty away from the Betfair Chase at Haydock 10 weeks ago but PROTEKTORAT couldn’t have been any more impressive that day, sauntering to an 11-length success, and if Dan Skelton’s charge arrives in anything like the same form, he will prove tough to beat. Noble Yates picked up really well to land the Many Clouds at Aintree 8 weeks ago so he looks the obvious threat to the selection, with Dusart third on the list back over fences.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.
All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
