Racehorse &JockeyWelfare

Thewelfareofthe sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.

All racehorses trained in Britain arestabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). Thestandards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers farexceed those prescribed by animal welfarelegislation.

Similarly,BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards forthe racing surfaceand all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine.BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensurethatthe higheststandards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide careto the horses throughout their time at the racecourse

In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’sveterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors arealso on hand in the case of anyincident involving ajockey

If anyincident occurs during araceitis routine practicefor screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allowthe veterinary or medical personnel to makeasafeand accurate diagnosis and so thattheymay perform anytreatment in aprivateand calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receivefurther treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergencyhospital.
