We loved seeing so many of you back here yesterday for the opener to our 2022/23 season and we’ve got another fantastic afternoon of racing and entertainment planned today.
The first of today’s official seven-race card gets underway at 1.30pm with the 888sport Novices’ Hurdle, but before that we’re giving you the chance to see the stars of the future with two pony races taking place on the track. The first of these goes off at 12pm with the second at 12.30pm and they are both sure to be a real treat.
At 4.25pm the Jim Wilson Memorial Novices’ Steeple Chase will get underway, a race held in memory of the Gold Cup winning rider who sadly passed away in August at the age of 72 Jim’s connection to Cheltenham was prolific having achieved the rare feat of riding, owning and training a winner at The Festival
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who are supporting today’s card, including The Dragon TV & Film Studios, Racing Welfare, 888Sport, Masterson Holdings, Pertemps and Spirax Sacro. We wish you all a wonderful day here with us
Off the track we have a whole host of activities going on to keep you entertained, with the Hipcats providing music throughout the day and local band The Shadow Monkeys taking to the stage in the Centaur after racing at 5.15pm.
Throughout the day we will also be celebrating and showcasing the wonderful world of racehorse ownership by providing a fascinating insight into what it is like to be the proud owner of an equine star In the Hall of Fame, a syndicate village has been set-up, with racing clubs and syndicates on hand to talk to you about the fun and thrill of being involved in owning a racehorse. Among other things there will be ownership talks, a virtual reality ownership experience, the opportunity to meet an ex-racehorse and competitions galore
We really hope you enjoy this special afternoon with us I am sure it will be a day which will set the scene for an exciting season to come here at Cheltenham Racecourse.

The handicapper hasn’t credited BOTOX HAS with much improvement for his Fontwell Grade 2 success in February (went up only 1lb) and that viewpoint could turn out to be lenient. Gary Moore’s charge has a good record when fresh and can see off Irish raider Shoot First, who disappointed last time but shaped very well at Galway prior to that. Didtheyleaveuoutto and Panic Attack complete the shortlist.

This afternoon’s Jim Wilson Memorial Novices’ Chase remembers a great name in Jump racing Jim Wilson. Jim, who sadly passed away on August 29th at the age of 72 following a courageous battle with cancer, scaled the heights at Cheltenham both as a jockey and as a trainer English-born but Irish-raised, he rode the first of his 205 winners as an amateur on Advocate at Clonmel before making the move back to England where he was based in the Cotswolds working for David Nicholson. It was during his time with “The Duke” that a significant life event occurred for Jim he met his future wife Melinda.
Among Jim’s seven wins as a jockey at The Festival™, three came aboard Willie Wumpkins. who remains part of Festival folklore by being one of the few horses to win four times at Jump racing’s Olympics. Willie Wumpkins first tasted success at The Festival in the 1973 running of what is now the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. At that time, the horse was trained in Ireland by Adrian Maxwell and partnered to success by Pat Colville.
Owned by Jim’s mother-in-law Jane Pilkington, Willie Wumpkins subsequently made the move to England where he was trained by Jane herself. Willie Wumpkins’ second Festival success came six years later in 1979 in the Coral Golden Hurdle Final (now the Pertemps Final) where Jim partnered him to a 25-1 success. They reunited a year later for a second success at 10-1 in the same race and the hat-trick was brought up in 1981 by which time Willie Wumpkins was now 13 and returned at 13-2.
The Festival of 1980 also saw Jim crowned leading rider at The Festival with three victories. In addition to Willie Wumpkins, he also won the Kim Muir Handicap Chase on Good Prospect and the National Hunt Handicap Chase on Again The Same. He remains the last amateur to take top rider honours at The Festival.
As well as the remarkable win of teenager Willie Wumpkins, the 1981 Festival also saw Jim enjoy his greatest victory in the saddle when he became one of only three amateur riders to win chasing’s Blue Riband, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, aboard Little Owl. Owned jointly with his brother Robin, the Peter Easterby-trained Little Owl had improved significantly in the 1980/81 campaign. Arriving at the Gold Cup with victories at Doncaster, Haydock Park (twice) and Cheltenham, Little Owl put up the performance of his life to score by a length and a half from stable companion Night Nurse at odds of 6-1.
Following a seventh and final Festival winner on Broomy Bank in the 1984 Kim Muir Handicap Chase Jim retired from the saddle and turned his hand to training, basing himself at Glenfall Stables in Charlton Kings on the outskirts of Cheltenham.
Having enjoyed great success in the saddle at Cheltenham, Jim went on to join the exclusive club of those who have also trained winners at The Festival when he saddled Taberna Lord to success in the 1987 Coral Golden Hurdle with a young Luke Harvey in the saddle. Another major training success came in the 1994 Midlands Grand National courtesy of Glenbrook D’Or.
We are delighted to welcome Jim’s wife Melinda, daughter Fiona and brother Robin to Cheltenham today as we remember Jim, who was paid a fond tribute by Nicky Henderson on his passing: “He was a real gentleman and everybody loved him.”

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.
All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
