Welcome to our opening day of The Festival™. This year is going to have an even more special feeling at 10:30am when those gates open and we are able to welcome fans back to the four biggest days in the Jump racing calendar. The familiar roar will return and we have no doubt, it will be greater than ever.
Our feature race today is the Unibet Champion Hurdle, which was won in 2021 by the Henry De Bromhead-trained Honeysuckle, under an inspired ride from Rachael Blackmore. The Kenny Alexander-owned mare is back today to defend her crown and is looking to win her fifteenth race in a row to remain unbeaten. We wish all connections the best of luck. Ahead of racing today, we will be able to welcome back a few Cheltenham favourites as part of the Retraining of Racehorses parade taking place in the Parade Ring at 12:15pm. We encourage you all to enjoy seeing these equine stars including Call The Cops, Coneygree, Master Minded, Saphir du Rheu, Thistlecrack, Un Temps Pour Tout, Zarkandar and more as they excel in their second careers away from the racecourse. We will be supporting Well Child once again, as our charity partner for The Festival™. Well Child is the national charity for seriously ill children and headquartered in Cheltenham. At 12:40pm today in the Parade Ring, we will be officially opening the horsewalk as the Well Child Walkway with the charity’s newest ambassador, Smad Place. Smad Place will be joined by CEO of Well Child, Colin Dyer, Festival Ambassador Barry Geraghty and last year’s leading jockey at The Festival, Rachael Blackmore. While we hope everyone has a fantastic day with us, and is able to celebrate what we hope is the beginning of an extraordinary four days, we all acknowledge that the current news surrounding the world is at the forefront of all our minds. The final race on today’s card will be run as The Ukraine Appeal National Hunt Chase in support of the ongoing humanitarian crisis arising from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Jockey Club are supporting the charitable efforts of The British Red Cross which is fundraising to support people impacted and displaced by the invasion with necessities including food, water, first aid, medicines, warm clothes and shelter. We thank you all for any support you can offer the appeal, we know the racing community is incredibly strong when we come together and we hope we can help to raise funds for this very important cause. As we look ahead to the rest of the week, racegoers are reminded that whilst both Thursday and Gold Cup Day are sold out, tickets are still available for tomorrow if you wish to return and enjoy another day with us. Today’s RoR Parade A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the parade ring from 12.15pm to 12.30pm, the parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). Today’s parade features a host of familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including Gold Cup winner Coneygree, Grand National winner Pineau De Re and Stayers’ Hurdle winner, Thistlecrack, alongside several other Festival winners. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.
Barbers Shop - ridden by Katie Jerram-Hunnable 20-year-old by Saddlers’ Hall Formerly trained by Nicky Henderson Breeder – Queen Elizabeth
Bred by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Barbers Shop raced in The Queen’s colours with distinction. An eight-time winner, he was also placed in a King George and a Hennessy. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, he has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable and under her care he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. Among his many successes was being crowned champion at Hickstead and three times winner and champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing.
CONEYGREE - ridden by Sara Bradstock
15-year-old by Karinga Bay Formerly trained by Mark Bradstock Breeder - Lord Oaksey
Winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019. He adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won RoR showing classes and qualified for both The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree and the Tattersalls RoR Show Series Final at Hickstead. Sara and Coneygree’s ambition for 2022 is to repeat the feat of qualifying for these prestigious championship finals.
CALL THE COPS – ridden by Alice Kent 13-year-old by Presenting Formerly trained by Ben Haslam Breeder – Martin Donnellan
Call the Cops achieved the pinnacle of his racing career at the 2015 Cheltenham Festival when a convincing winner of the Pertemps Network Final under Andrew Tinkler for trainer Nicky Henderson. He was retired from racing in 2019 after enjoying further success when trained by Ben Haslam. A bit of a character, he has taken well to his new career, together with Alice Kent the pair enjoy show jumping, arena eventing and hunting, qualifying for the upcoming SEEL Arena Eventing Finals. They also plan to venture into the show ring in 2022.
COGRY– ridden by Jessica Grulich 13-year-old by King’s Theatre Formerly trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies Breeder – R D and Mrs. J S Chugg
A four-time course winner at Cheltenham, the locally trained Cogry retired from racing in 2020. He was looked after throughout his racing career by Jessica Grulich and his owners Graham and Alison Jelley gifted Cogry to Jessica following his retirement. Last year Cogry and Jessica had great fun taking part in dressage and combined training events and Jessica says the plan is to graduate to fully fledged eventing classes in 2022.
CHAMPAGNE FEVER – ridden by Harriet Colderick
15-year-old gelding by Stowaway Formerly trained by Willie Mullins Breeder – John P Cahill
During a distinguished racing career Champagne Fever ran at three consecutive Festivals, winning the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and finishing runner-up in the Arkle. He was retired in 2016 and has been a pleasure to retrain, “thriving in his ‘semi-retirement’. He is now ridden by Georgia Marsland who is enjoying learning the ropes eventing on him with the pair competing at BE100 level. Owner Harriet Colderick says: “He is such a character and does a bit of everything, including hacking round the Ashdown Forest, where he is much admired as he is such a striking horse.”
MASTER MINDED – ridden by Sophie Haylock 19-year-old gelding by Nikos Formerly trained by Paul Nicholls Breeder – Marie-Christine Gabeur
In 2008 Master Minded became the youngest ever winner of the Queen Mother Champion Chase when just a five-year-old. In all, he won eight Grade 1 races before incurring a career ending injury in 2011. Still owned by Clive Smith, Master Minded has been with Sophie Haylock ever since he started the road to recovery. His rehabilitation has enabled him to have a long and happy retirement, competing at local shows and doing some dressage classes, but mostly just hacking around the farm. Sophie says: “He is a pleasure to look after and thehorse of a lifetime.”
PINEAU DE RE - ridden by Lizzie Brunt 19-year-old gelding by Maresca Sorrento Formerly trained by Dr Richard Newland Breeder – Michel Hardy Winner of the 2014 Grand National Pineau De Re retired from racing in 2016. Since then, he and Lizzie Brunt have formed a successful partnership. In eventing they compete at BE Novice level and in dressage they qualified for the RoR Southern Dressage Championships at Blenheim in September. Lizzie says Pineau loves jumping, adding: “He is very keen into a fence and he reads the combinations before his rider! He is so intelligent, by far the brightest horse I’ve ever ridden. I think this helped him win the National, along with his huge heart.”
UN TEMPS POUR TOUT –ridden by Clare Poole
13-year-old gelding by Robin Des Champs Formerly trained by David Pipe Breeder – Felix Talbot
A dual Cheltenham Festival winner, Un Temps Pour Tout has been in the care of Clare Poole since he retired from racing in 2019. Clare finds him an incredible horse, although very sensitive in his nature and it took a while for him to fully let her in, but once the trust was established there has been no looking back. Clare says: “Tompy has been an absolute pleasure to retrain, he always gives his all and is thoroughly enjoying his show jumping and our goal is to qualify for the 2022 British Show Jumping Amateur Championships at Aintree.”
SAPHIR DU RHEU – ridden by Charlotte Alexander 13-year-old gelding by Al Namix Formerly trained by Paul Nicholls Breeder - Claude Duval
A Grade 1 winner at Aintree, Saphir Du Rheu has been with Charlotte Alexander since he retired from racing in 2018. Very versatile, he has risen quickly through the eventing ranks to compete at Intermediate level, while in dressage he is about to start competing at Medium level and is already doing well at Elementary. He is also doing some show jumping, as well as team chasing and hunting. Charlotte says: “Saphy loves life and particularly performing in front of a crowd where he grows another hand and knows everyone is admiring him.”
SMAD PLACE – ridden by Sarah Haydon
15-year-old gelding by Smadoun Formerly trained by Alan King Breeder – Eric Aubtee and Mme Maryse Aubree Winner of the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup, Smad Place was entrusted to Sarah Holden in 2019, although he is still owned by his wonderfully supportive owner, Mrs Peter Andrews. After a slow start due to Sarah having baby and then Covid, the pair have recently really cemented their partnership and they have been out to some local unaffiliated dressage events and had fun cross-country schooling. The plan is to continue doing dressage before graduating to do more RoR competitions in a range of disciplines.
THOMAS CRAPPER – Ridden by Harriet Dickin

A two-time course winner at Cheltenham, Thomas Crapper, known as ‘Crappy’, was purchased as a foal by Robin Dickin’s wife Claire. He was a wonderful servant to the Dickin family, running 50 times in a nine-year career. Still a strong character; Crappy knows exactly what he wants, he hates the snow, but loves hunting and the solarium! Since retiring, Harriet Dickin has retrained him for hunting and showing, winning two classes at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships. Harriet says: “He will spend the rest of his life at Robin Dickin Racing, we owe him so much.”
THISTLECRACK – Ridden by Alice Gillard
14-year-old gelding by Kayf Tara Formerly trained by Colin Tizzard Breeder – RF and SD Knipe
In a stellar racing career Thistlecrack amassed earnings of £750,000 with highlights including victory in the 2016 running of the Stayers’ Hurdle and the King George VI Chase at Kempton. Thistlecrack is now enjoying a busy retirement; hunting, cross country schooling, show jumping and arena eventing. He has shown great enthusiasm for every new challenge. His rider Alice Gillard is planning a varied RoR programme for him in the coming months and his progress is closely followed by owners John and Heather Snook.
ZARKANDAR – ridden side saddle by Olivia Fforde
15-year-old gelding by Azamour Formerly trained by Paul Nicholls Bred by the Aga Khan
A Grade 1 winner at Cheltenham, Aintree and Auteuil, Zarkandar amassed almost £1 million in prize money. A half-brother to the Arc winning mare Zarkava, he is known as “Gino” at home and was retired from racing in 2018 when Paul Nicholls gifted Zarkandar to Lucinda Sims. Since then, he has adjusted very well to a slower pace of life, starting as Lucinda’s happy hacker before graduating to dressage and hunter trials. He also competes in showing classes side-saddle under Lucinda’s daughter Olivia, which he really enjoys and is excelling at.

FACTS & STATS THE SKY BET SUPREME NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION
The Grade 1 Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is run over two miles and half a furlong and is contested by the cream of this year’s novice hurdlers. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the senior ranks. All the runners in this year’s contest will carry 11st 7lb.

Paul Townend was very confident throughout the race, happy to sit in as For Pleasure took them along at a breakneck pace. He was clearly the best horse in the race and won by an eventual 24 lengths.

Many great horses in the past have used this race as a stepping-stone to Champion Chase glory the following season and the Arkle is one of the highlights of the whole Festival. Shishkin continued his ascendency to stardom when winning the 2021 Arkle in emphatic style. Like the winner of our first, he wasn’t missed by the market and was sent off the well backed 4/9F. With no superstar from the Mullins yard, Nicky Henderson’s gelding was happy to chase the leaders and once he jumped to the lead two out, there was no catching him. It was all hands and heels from Nico de Boinville to win impressively.

HISTORY The Sporting Life Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase was introduced to The Festival™ in 1969 as a replacement for the Cotswold Chase. It goes without saying that the race was named in honour of the legendary Arkle, a three-time winner of the Gold Cup in the mid-1960s. The inaugural race, which was initially run on the second day of The Festival™ before being switched to its current slot in 1980, was won by the Fred Rimell-trained Chatham who was ridden by the late Terry Biddlecombe. In 1972 Fred Winter and Richard Pitman teamed up to win the Arkle with Pendil, a subsequent dual-winner of Kempton’s King George VI Chase where a race is now named in his honour. 1978 Arkle winner, Alverton, certainly deserves a mention as the Peter Easterby-trained gelding is the only horse in the race’s history to go on to win the prestigious Gold Cup, a feat he achieved 12 months later when ridden by Jonjo O’Neill. Easterby was to win the Arkle twice more with Clayside in 1981 and Ryeman in 1983. The 1991 renewal was notable for a trio of reasons. Firstly, Waterford Castle stepped into become the first sponsor of the race and secondly, the Richard Dunwoody-ridden Remittance Man provided Nicky Henderson with the first of his record six Arkle winners.But the most noticeable fact was that Remittance Man became the first horse to go on and win the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The Arthur Moore-trained Klarion Davis achieved the same feat in 1995 and 1996. A. P. McCoy won the first of his three Arkles when partnering the Martin Pipe-trained Or Royal to victory in 1997 and he didn’t have to wait long for his second, following up on Champleve the following year, again for Martin Pipe. Flagship Uberalles gave Paul Nicholls his first Arkle success in 1999 and became the third horse to follow up in the Champion Chase, while Azertyuiop gave Nicholls the double when winning both races in 2003 and 2004. Jessica Harrington’s Moscow Flyer was a hugely popular Arkle winner for Barry Geraghty in 2002, by which time the sponsorship baton had passed to the Irish Independent newspaper. A year later, Moscow Flyer was welcomed back into the Winners’ Enclosure following his success in the Champion Chase, and again in 2005 when he regained his crown. In fact, the 2000s proved a hot period for the race as, in addition to Moscow Flyer, Voy Por Ustedes for Alan King and Robert Thornton achieved the Grade 1 double in 2006 and 2007, as did Sizing Europe for Henry de Bromhead and Andrew Lynch in 2010 and 2011. Few will forget Sprinter Sacre’s scintillating success in the 2012 Arkle, which was the Racing Post’s first year of sponsorship, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of the all-time greats with two victories in the Champion Chase. The same trainer and jockey teamed up with Simonsig the following year and not only did his victory mean Nicky Henderson became the joint-leading trainer in the race but Barry Geraghty became the winningmost rider. Henderson has since moved out on his own as Altior gave his trainer a sixth victory in 2017. Willie Mullins’ Champagne Fever was denied by 33/1 shot Western Warhorse in 2014 but he had no such problems in the following two years as Un De Sceaux and Douvan (pictured) both landed the prize for Ireland’s Champion Trainer. The brilliant Footpad gave Mullins a third success in 2018, a victory which also moved jockey Ruby Walsh alongside Barry Geraghty on four wins, while 2019’s winner, Duc Des Genievres made it four wins in the last five years for Mullins, Paul Townend in the saddle this time, recording his first Arkle triumph. 2020’s renewal was taken by a mare for the first time since Anaglogs Daughter’s 1980 triumph as Put The Kettle On emerged victorious in brave style. Last year Sishkin followed in the footsteps of Sprinter Sacre and Altior to win the race for top trainer Nicky Henderson.

The likeable EDWARDSTONE was foot perfect when making short work of smart opposition in the Kingmaker and can see off the Irish challenge, headed by Riviere d’Etel, who may have beaten Blue Lord at Leopardstown last time with a cleaner jump at the last. Haut En Couleurs came to grief early in that same Leopardstown race but is another who leaves the impression he can make his mark at this level.

A memorable day for Sue Smith in last year’s renewal as Vintage Clouds took home the race at the grand old age of 11. The striking grey could be spotted from a mile away coming down the hill and was galvanised by Ryan Mania to win by an unbelievable five and a half lengths. The big fancy of the race, Happygolucky, could only manage second. Vintage Clouds had run in the race previously and clearly benefited from the first time cheekpieces.

The third Grade 1 race on today’s card, the Unibet Champion Hurdle is the historic Championship race for two-mile hurdlers and is the highest-quality race of its type run anywhere in the world. HONEYSUCKLE Honeysuckle became the sixth mare to win the Champion Hurdle and in doing so dethroned previous winner Epatante. Henry De Bromhead’s mare had won the Mares’ Hurdle at the previous festival and came into the race an extremely well backed favourite. The money came for her all throughout the day despite already being a short price and she duly obliged in emphatic style. She put the race to bed in a matter of strides and fairly flew up the hill.

HISTORY The Unibet Champion Hurdle is without doubt the most prestigious hurdle race in the calendar. Run over a distance of two miles and 87 yards, with eight flights to be jumped, the race was first run in 1927. That inaugural race was won by Blaris, earning connections the grand sum of £365. Twelve months later, Brown Jack added his name to the Roll of Honour before switching codes to win the Queen Alexandra Stakes six times from 1929-34. Only three runners went to post in 1932 – the smallest field in the race’s history. Insurance proved victorious that day and confirmed his superiority by following up twelve months later. The post-war years saw the race’s first triple winner. Hatton’s Grace, trained by the legendary Vincent O’Brien, dominated from 1949-51. He was swiftly followed by Sir Ken who recorded a hat-trick of wins for Willie Stephenson from 1952-54 and still holds the record of being the shortest-priced winner - sent off a 2/5 favourite in 1953. He was ridden by Tim Molony who with four victories is the winning most rider. The late 60s saw the emergence of another superstar in the shape of Persian War who ruled the race for trainer Colin Davies, winning three times from 1968-1970. The 70s provided some well-known winners and even today few will need little introduction. Bula recorded back-to-back wins in 1971-72, Comedy Of Errors’ two wins in 1973 and 1975 were sandwiched around the victory of a certain Lanzarote, before Night Nurse 1976-77, Monksfield 1978-79 and Sea Pigeon 1980-81 all recorded doubles. In 1984 Dawn Run, trained by Paddy Mullins, emerged on the scene and started re-writing the history books. That year she became only the second mare to win the Unibet Champion Hurdle – also adding the Irish and French versions, and two years later she added the Gold Cup and remains the only horse to have completed the Champion Hurdle-Gold Cup double. Nicky Henderson’s See You Then dominated the race from 1985-87 to become the race’s fourth three-time winner. The most recent three-time winner came in 1998-2000 when Istabraq (pictured above right) helped launch the career of a certain Aidan O’Brien. He was odds-on to become the first four-time winner of the race in 2001 but was cruelly denied due to the entire Festival being lost to the foot-and-mouth outbreak. In recent times, Hurricane Fly excelled in 2011 and although he missed the following year through injury, he returned in 2013 to regain his crown. He could finish only fourth in 2014 and in his final attempt at the race, he finished a gallant third behind stablemate Faugheen in 2015. Willie Mullins also saddled the winner in 2016 as Annie Power became the first mare since Flakey Dove in 1994 and just the fourth overall to win the Unibet Champion Hurdle. 2017 and 2018 saw Nicky Henderson’s Buveur d’Air cross the line first and extend his trainer’s tally of victories in the race to seven. He fell in the 2019 renewal when bidding for the hat-trick and instead, it was JP McManus’ other representative, the Gavin Cromwell-trained Espoir d’Allen, who became the first five-year-old since Katchit in 2008 to win the premier two-mile hurdle in the National Hunt calendar, and he did so in some style. Epatante made it back to back wins for JP but last year it was all about the superstar mare Honeysuckle. FACTS & STATS THE CLOSE BROTHERS MARES’ HURDLE RACE (Registered as The David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle) RACE DESCRIPTION The Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle race, now in its fifteenth year, has largely been dominated by Willie Mullins, largely thanks to the brilliant race mare Quevega who won the race six times. This Grade 1 hurdle race, run over about two and a half miles, is designed specifically for fillies and mares. With no four-year-olds in today’s line-up, all of the runners are set to carry 11st 5lb.

BLACK TEARS Black Tears lowered the colours of hot favourite Concertista. The Wille Mullinsmare looked to have put the raced to bed, but Jack Kennedy and Black Tears had other ideas, as the pair stormed up the hill to win by a head. The 2020 Coral Cup winner had proven Cheltenham form and put that to good use. She was held up by Jack Kennedy and it’s safe to say he timed his ride to perfection. Concertista looks set to return in the Mares’ Chase this year.

The Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle is a Grade 3 Handicap restricted to juveniles (four-year-olds), so many of the runners in this two miles and half a furlong race will still be very inexperienced over hurdles. As with the handicap earlier in the card, the higher the rating, the bigger the weight a horse has to carry - see how The Tide Turns and Brazil, both rated 137, carry 4lb more than the 133-rated Doctor Churchill.

JEFF KIDDER Well done to anyone who picked out last year’s shock 80/1 winner for Noel Meade and Sean Flanagan. Carrying only 10-8, Sean Flanagan struggled to get him into a rhythm for the first part of the race, where he didn’t jump with much fluency. After making a mistake four out, Sean gave a shake of the reins and after some rousting the penny began to drop. He looked to be getting outpaced but once those in front started to paddle, he reeled them in with ease.

SOUTH WEST REGION FREQUENT RUNNER SCHEME
The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick, and Wincanton. There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training. Warwick’s two-day meeting on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September kicks off the 2021/22 scheme, which will conclude on 31 May 2022.

The Ukraine Appeal National Hunt Steeple Chase has a rich history and, in its heyday, was second only to the Grand National when it came to the most prestigious races of the season. Nowadays, the race is restricted to novices aged five-years-old and upwards and is run over about three miles and six furlongs – the longest race over regulation obstacles during the entire Festival™. All runners this afternoon carry 11st 6lb.

With no amateur riders at last year’s festival, the responsibility fell to Jack Kennedy, who made it two winners on the day. He held him up in midfield and there were only three in with a chance turning for home. Next Destination took a narrow lead but was pegged back by Galvin, who ate up the hill and kept on well.

THE PRESTBURY CUP The Festival™ at Cheltenham Racecourse has seen a great rivalry between the home team of British-trained runners and those crossing the Irish Sea for many years. To celebrate this rivalry, the competition between the two countries is officially titled The Prestbury Cup.
There are a total of 28 races during The Festival™. The Prestbury Cup, named after the nearest village to Cheltenham Racecourse, will be presented to jockeys and trainers from Ireland or Britain once the winning country is confirmed. The Cup itself has been sealed with some hallowed Cheltenham turf, so the winning country will be taking a little bit of Cheltenham with them.

Crossing The Course
• Full refunds for tickets will be given if racing is abandoned before the first race.
Racegoers in Club may cross into the centre of the course to watch races.
• A 50% refund will be given if racing is abandoned before the third or feature race.
You will be informed over the PA system if a decision has been made otherwise preventing access should it be felt the quality of the racing surface is being affected by racegoers crossing the course.
No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting. Applications for refunds should be sent within one month after the fixture except for The Festival™ presented by Magners when refunds will be processed automatically. No refunds will be given for tickets that are purchased and then not required or used.
Admission Policy
The management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone, and to remove any person, without assigning a reason if their behaviour is considered to be antisocial or likely to be disruptive.
Alcohol
Please would racegoers kindly note that the bringing of your own alcoholic drink into the Racecourse is strictly prohibited. For your own enjoyment and to avoid disappointment please observe this restriction. Please respect our neighbours when leaving the racecourse. No alcohol is to be taken off site.
Benches
Please would racegoers refrain from standing on the benches on the lawns in front of the grandstands. As well as an obvious safety risk, it also blocks the view of a number of your fellow racegoers.

Regrettably, dogs other than guide dogs are not allowed within the enclosures.

Gambling

Parade Ring Access
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.

Touts
JCR is taking strong action against touts. Touting is seen by some as a legitimate way of buying or selling last minute tickets but many tickets sold by touts are fraudulent or counterfeit. An injunction has been issued preventing touting at the Racecourse. You could yourself be breaking the law by dealing with a tout. Genuine tickets sales are available at all the entrances or in advance via the Racecourse website.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
