Welcome to Day Two of The International meeting. This is our final race meeting of 2021, and we should be able to look forward to a brilliant day of racing. It has been a wonderful start to the season so far and a real highlight has been being able to welcome you all back onto our racecourse to enjoy the first class sport on offer. Today we have an exciting seven race card on offer, with the Unibet International Hurdle taking centre stage. This is always an exciting race and has a strong role of honour including The New One, Zarkander and Rooster Booster. Today’s card also features another competitive handicap Chase, the Racing Post Gold Cup. It looks like competitve field will head to post for this race and we wish all connections the best of luck. As 2021 draws to a close, we are delighted that our 2022 Wall Calendars will be available to purchase for £10 from the horse box under the Crescent Walkway at the top of the Parade Ring. RACHAEL BLACKMORE NOMINATED FOR BBC WORLD SPORT STAR OF THE YEAR AWARD Following the news that The Jockey Club’s West Region Ambassador Rachael Blackmore has been shortlisted for the BBC’s World Sport Star of the Year award, Nick Seddon takes a look at a sensational 2021 for the Irish jockey… It is difficult to sum up 12 months in so few words when you have had one as extraordinary as Rachael Blackmore. But if she started 2021 as one of the top riders in the weighing room, this was certainly the year she became a household name. As we headed into a Cheltenham Festival like no other at the beginning of March, Rachael Blackmore was already well established as the leading female jockey in Ireland, having enjoyed a dozen Grade One victories and with three winners at The Festival™ to her name. However, what was to follow over the next few weeks would see her reach a level never approached by any other female jockey in the history of Jump racing. The mare Honeysuckle had already provided Blackmore with a Grade One Cheltenham victory at The Festival™ in 2020 and she helped the 32-year-old to become the first female jockey to win the Grade One Unibet Champion Hurdle when easily justifying 11-10 favouritism in hurdling’s premier prize 12 months later. That was just a sign of things to come for Blackmore, whose stunning tally of six victories at the 2021 Festival put her two clear of nearest rival Jack Kennedy to secure another milestone as the first female rider to be leading jockey at the meeting. Just three weeks later the spotlight was on the Randox Grand National Festival at Aintree and while the eyes of the world were on Blackmore, if she suffers from nerves then it certainly did not show. The big race itself is, historically speaking, the first of Jump racing’s major prizes to have had female participation. But although Charlotte Brew made history when riding Barony Fort back in 1977, the closest a female jockey had come to winning was when Katie
Walsh finished third on Seabass in 2012. That all changed this April though, as Blackmore and Minella Times put in a foot perfect performance to secure a comprehensive six and a half-length success, images of which soon found themselves on the front pages and news programmes around the world. Blackmore has always played down the fact she is a female in the saddle, preferring instead to let her riding do the talking. And with such huge success at Cheltenham and her historic moment at Aintree in 2021 there are few ceilings left to smash or reasons to make the comparisons. That said, there can be no doubt that her achievements in context have been a huge benefit to the sport as a whole. Defeating the likes of sporting superstars Max Verstappen, Tom Brady and Novak Djokovic in an online popularity contest later this month is certainly not going to be easy, but the fact Blackmore is even in contention for this is an achievement in itself – as a look at the statistics will show. Historically racing has rather struggled for recognition at the Sports Personality of the Year awards and since it first took place in 1954, jockeys have only managed to finish in the top three of the main award on just five occasions, with Sir AP McCoy being responsible for three of those. Meanwhile, should Blackmore go on to win the overseas award, she would be only the second jockey to do so and the first since Australian rider George Moore back in 1967. If form plays a part then Blackmore could certainly do no more of late, with her sensational victory on A Plus Tard in last month’s Grade One Betfair Chase at Haydock Park still fresh in the memory. And while she will undoubtedly be focusing on riding winners at Thurles on December 19th, hopefully she will be celebrating victory of another kind later that evening in Salford.

Today we say thank you and goodbye to Victoria Bowen-Jones who has been Secretary to Simon Claisse, Clerk of the Course for 16 years. Vix has helped many trainers, owners and colleagues during her time with The Jockey Club and she will be hugely missed. We would all like to wish her the best of luck for the future and look forward to seeing her back on racecourse soon!
This afternoon’s third race – The Simon Claisse Handicap Chase – honours our departing Clerk of the Course, who after 20 years of service is moving on to pastures new. We take a look back on his time with Cheltenham Racecourse… Appointed as Clerk of the Course in 2000, Simon has seen The Festival™ grow from three days to four during his tenure as well as provide the perfect sporting arena for famous head-to-heads, including the Denman Vs Kauto Star era, all six of Quevega’s incredible Cheltenham Festival wins and even welcomed Desert Orchid back into the Winner’s Enclosure alongside Her Majesty The Queen. While Simon has been a permanent fixture on course over his time, he has seen many greats of the sport come and go. Great partnerships such as that of Sir AP McCoy and Martin Pipe have been formed - which saw AP develop into the Champion that we all know him as now - to the dominance of Walsh and Nicholls, and then Ruby and Willie Mullins, not forgetting the wonderful team of Barry Geraghty and Nicky Henderson. There are too many equine heroes to name, but each time one has graced the turf the stands have been packed and the roar has been raucous. It has been about as action-packed a 20 years as you could wish for on the racing front, though that time hasn’t been without its challenges and Simon’s first and final Festivals ended with a sense of irony. With his first Festival cancelled due to the Foot and Mouth pandemic in 2001, bringing a host of challenges along with it, there was almost a serendipity about the fact that Simon’s final Festival being held behind-closed-doors due to the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic. Alongside the usual battle with the elements – with the rainfall meaning
Simon Claisse there was no racing at the course at all in January – there was the presence of ever-changing guidance, rules and restrictions in the build-up to the 2021 Cheltenham Festival. The creation of an Irish bubble was navigated with supreme professionalism and it brought great rewards, reaping a Festival right up there with the best of them thanks to Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore’s record-breaking triumphs. Of course, being a Clerk of the Course is a diverse role and as well as being in charge of all things racing at Cheltenham, and for The Jockey Club South West courses, Simon has been a firm favourite with the media. Often seen in the early morning slot with the now ‘famous’ Going video on social media, or heard on talkSPORT with Rupert Bell, Simon is a key part of the many trips across the Irish sea on media visits to Willie Mullins, Jessica Harrington and, of course, the odd visit to Punchestown Racecourse for ‘market research’. Simon Claisse has been an asset to The Jockey Club and horse racing for over three decades and will be hugely missed by his colleagues, racing’s participants and racegoers. It is the end of an iconic era and we all wish Simon the very best for his next adventure. After over 20 years at Cheltenham, it is Claisse closed.
