Welcome to Cheltenham! Tiggy Hancock was our cheeky, loving 15 year old daughter, sister and friend. Tiggy loved life and her ponies, she was a passionate Irish International Pony Eventer. Tiggy had an exciting start to her season and was full of anticipation as she prepared for the European Championships. Tiggy was laying the foundations for an exciting future, she had the world at her feet. Sadly fate denied her that future. Our lives changed forever on June 16th when Tiggy was tragically taken from us in a training accident. Tiggy filled our house and lives with mischief and laughter. The thing that shone out to Tiggy’s wonderful friends was her kindness and inclusivity. To celebrate this, her sisters decided to set up a charity. Tiggys Trust took wings and our world became Yellow! From Royal Ascot, to the Tokyo Olympics,LebanonandAustraliaandatshowsandeventsallover England and Ireland, yellow ribbons, hat silks and arm bands appeared. Support started pouring in for our Tiny Spark! In partnering with The Injured Jockeys Fund and Pony Racing Authority we were offered the opportunity to ‘Turn Cheltenham Yellow for Tiggy’ to launch Tiggy’s Trust. We are focussed on empowering young riders through mental health support, education and training. To borrow the words from one of our great equestrians – “Hopes and dreams for the little ones are at the heart of our sport”. We are trying to inspire the next generation and in small ways make the sport better for them. We hope you’ll agree it’s a noble cause. Thank you all for being part of this amazing day. We are hugely grateful to The Jockey Club for so generously supporting us through Cheltenham Racecourse - the home of jump racing and one of the world’s most beautiful race courses. Enjoy your day The Hancock Family

RACHAEL BLACKMORE NOMINATED FOR BBC WORLD SPORT STAR OF THE YEAR AWARD

Following the news that The Jockey Club’s West Region Ambassador Rachael Blackmore has been shortlisted for the BBC’s World Sport Star of the Year award, Nick Seddon takes a look at a sensational 2021 for the Irish jockey…

It is difficult to sum up 12 months in so few words when you have had one as extraordinary as Rachael Blackmore. But if she started 2021 as one of the top riders in the weighing room, this was certainly the year she became a household name.
As we headed into a Cheltenham Festival like no other at the beginning of March, Rachael Blackmore was already well established as the leading female jockey in Ireland, having enjoyed a dozen Grade One victories and with three winners at The Festival™ to her name. However, what was to follow over the next few weeks would see her reach a level never approached by any other female jockey in the history of Jump racing.
The mare Honeysuckle had already provided Blackmore with a Grade One Cheltenham victory at The Festival™ in 2020 and she helped the 32-year-old to become the first female jockey to win the Grade One Unibet Champion Hurdle when easily justifying 11-10 favouritism in hurdling’s premier prize 12 months later.
That was just a sign of things to come for Blackmore, whose stunning tally of six victories at the 2021 Festival put her two clear of nearest rival Jack Kennedy to secure another milestone as the first female rider to be leading jockey at the meeting.
Just three weeks later the spotlight was on the Randox Grand National Festival at Aintree and while the eyes of the world were on Blackmore, if she suffers from nerves then it certainly did not show. The big race itself is, historically speaking, the first of Jump racing’s major prizes to have had female participation. But although Charlotte Brew made history when riding Barony Fort back in 1977, the closest a female jockey had come to winning was when Katie

Walsh finished third on Seabass in 2012. That all changed this April though, as Blackmore and Minella Times put in a foot perfect performance to secure a comprehensive six and a half-length success, images of which soon found themselves on the front pages and news programmes around the world.
Blackmore has always played down the fact she is a female in the saddle, preferring instead to let her riding do the talking. And with such huge success at Cheltenham and her historic moment at Aintree in 2021 there are few ceilings left to smash or reasons to make the comparisons.
That said, there can be no doubt that her achievements in context have been a huge benefit to the sport as a whole. Defeating the likes of sporting superstars Max Verstappen, Tom Brady and Novak Djokovic in an online popularity contest later this month is certainly not going to be easy, but the fact Blackmore is even in contention for this is an achievement in itself – as a look at the statistics will show.
Historically racing has rather struggled for recognition at the Sports Personality of the Year awards and since it first took place in 1954, jockeys have only managed to finish in the top three of the main award on just five occasions, with Sir AP McCoy being responsible for three of those. Meanwhile, should Blackmore go on to win the overseas award, she would be only the second jockey to do so and the first since Australian rider George Moore back in 1967.
If form plays a part then Blackmore could certainly do no more of late, with her sensational victory on A Plus Tard in last month’s Grade One Betfair Chase at Haydock Park still fresh in the memory. And while she will undoubtedly be focusing on riding winners at Thurles on December 19th, hopefully she will be celebrating victory of another kind later that evening in Salford.

KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH ALL NEWS, VIEWS & GOSSIP FROM THE COURSE CHELTENHAM RACECOURSE
The Mayor of Cheltenham, Councillor Steve Harvey and the Mayor of Tewkesbury, Councillor Andrew Preece are raising money on behalf of their chosen charities today
CHELTENHAM MAYOR’S CHARITIES -
The Friends of the Cheltenham Samaritans have worked hard for over 40 years, raising funds and the profile of Samaritans, to help the people of Cheltenham to have their amazing services maintained locally. The Listening service has always been very active and has been even more essential during the present pandemic along with all other means of communication. So many people find comfort in the listening ear of the Samaritans. All services are operated by volunteers but keeping all forms of communication open at all times can be tough. All funds raised by the Friends are donated to the Cheltenham branch of Samaritans to help with the maintenance and running of their walk in centre. The Friends committee run a number of high profile events and have had to be creative in lockdown by organising virtual events, including beer festivals. Their mission to put the FUN in fundraising is a perfect match for the Mayor’s Charity.
TEWKESBURY MAYOR’S CHARITIES -
Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) – The Severn Area Rescue Association is a multi-disciplinary search and rescue organisation, and is the designated rescue service for over 20,000km2 on and around the Severn, being called primarily via HM Coastguard, the Police, and by the Fire and Ambulance Services. It provides inshore lifeboat cover, cliff rescue, mud rescue, flood response and missing person search expertise. Tewkesbury has hosted one of SARA’s stations since the floods of 2007. Tewkesbury’s crew are all local, unpaid professional volunteers - there are no paid staff. In 2019, our station deployed on 43 occasions. In 2020, our first deployment was at 1900hrs on New Year’s Day and, as a result of the storms in February, some crew were operational almost continuously for three weeks. Scoo-B-Doo (Supporting Neonatal Care) - Scoo-B-Doo was established in 1982 by a small group of grateful parents, doctors and nurses. Today, the charity is still run entirely by volunteers and supports the Neonatal Unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in caring for sick and premature babies from Gloucestershire and beyond. From day one, the charity has been actively fundraising to provide equipment and essential items. Over 80% of the equipment used on the ward every day has been funded by Scoo-B-Doo, helping to ensure the babies are given the best possible care. 100% of every donation goes to help the wards tiny patients and their families. The NHS does its part too of course, providing a building and paying for all of the dedicated medical staff as well as the life-saving drugs used on the ward. But with the NHS under constant financial pressure, the money Scoo-B-Doo raises is vital in supporting the service and that is critical to the survival of these vulnerable patients.

PLAY SMARTER CORACH RAMBLER has a highly progressive profile and an excellent strike rate, so he gets the narrow vote to defy a rise for his facile success at Aintree in October. Coeur Serein was about to score when falling at Lingfield on chasing debut, so he’s regarded as the main danger ahead of Barbados Buck’s, who looks the type to benefit from first-time blinkers,
