Welcome back to the Home of Jump Racing for the first day of The November Meeting. This day is always one of the highlights of our season as we celebrate one of our most popular racedays, Countryside Day.
We have six fantastic races ahead of us this afternoon, including the exciting Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase, which sees the unique cross country fences in use for the first time this season. We wish all connections of our runners the best of luck today. This day raises a huge amount of money for the Countryside Alliance and The County Air Ambulance HELP Appeal – the only charity funding life-saving hospital helipads all over the country. As well as a silent auction, there is plenty of entertainment ahead of racing in the Parade Ring. From a gun dog display to the ROR parade of former Cheltenham Champions, and a Q&A in the Parade Ring with local superstar, Kaleb Cooper from Amazon Prime Video’s Clarkson’s Farm at 11:45am. The Shopping Village opens for the first time this season today and is situated in The Tented Village below the Parade Ring. With Christmas just around the corner, it is the perfect place to experience a little raceday retail therapy. In addition, friend and former Official Photographer of the racecourse and official racing photographer to the Queen, Bernard Parkin will be signing his latest book, “In The Shadow of Cleeve Hill”, between 1:30pm and 2:30pm in the Shopping Village. A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 11.25am to 11.40am The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). Today’s parade features a host of familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including Gold Cup winner Coneygree and Grand National winner Pineau De Re. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing. The charity’s four core roles and responsibilities can be summarised as follows, RoR:
The charity:
• Creates a demand for former racehorses through opportunities to participate and compete in a range of equine disciplines and therapeutic activities. • Educates owners and riders who take responsibility for former racehorses. • Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving racing. • Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those in need of charitable support and care. In non-Covid affected times, RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.

1. ANNACOTTY Sire - Beneficial 13yo Ridden by Hannah Bishop Winner of the 2015 Paddy Power Gold Cup, Annacotty enjoys a varied and busy life. In the course of his retraining he demonstrated a genuine love and talent for showjumping and he has since won several classes with the highlight coming at Hickstead in September. He is currently ranked 10th in the RoR National bronze league and has qualified for the British Showjumping Amateur Finals at Aintree – which is where he is heading straight after today’s parade.
2. CONEYGREE Sire - Karinga Bay 14yo Ridden by Sara Bradstock Winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019. He has adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won RoR showing classes and qualified for The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree. Sara and Coneygree’s ambition for 2022 is to repeat the feat of qualifying for the Tattersalls RoR Show Series Final at Hickstead in June.
3. MINELLA REBELLION Sire - King’s Theatre 9yo Ridden by Katie Dashwood A full brother to Cheltenham Festival winner Balthazar King, Minella Rebellion did not share his sibling’s ability and was retired after five runs under rules. However, his star has shone in a different sphere and in just his first season in the show ring he was crowned Supreme Champion at the Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree, the first novice to lift the title, and winner of the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship at HOYS in October.
4. PINEAU DE RE Sire - Maresca Sorrento 18yo Ridden by Lizzie Brunt Winner of the 2014 Grand National (beating Balthazar King) Pineau De Re retired from racing in 2016. Since then, he and Lizzie Brunt have formed a successful partnership. In Eventing they compete at BE Novice level and in dressage they qualified for the RoR Novice Dressage Championship at Blenheim in September. Lizzie says Pineau loves jumping, adding: “He is very keen into a fence and he reads the combinations before his rider! He is so intelligent, by far the brightest horse I’ve ever ridden. I think this helped him win the National, along with his huge heart.”
5. UN TEMPS POUT TOUT Sire -Robin Des Champs 12yo Ridden by Clare Poole A dual Cheltenham Festival winner, Un Temps Pout Tout has been in the care of Clare Poole since he retired from racing in 2019. Clare finds him an incredible horse, although very sensitive in his nature and it took quite a while for him to fully let her in, but once the trust was established there has been no looking back. Clare says: “Tompy has been an absolute pleasure to retrain, he always gives his all and is thoroughly enjoying his showjumping and our goal is to qualify for the British Showjumping Amateur Championships at Aintree next year”.
6. SAPHIR DU RHEU Sire - Al Namix 12yo Ridden by Charlotte Alexander A Grade 1 winner at Aintree, Saphir Du Rheu has been with Charlotte Alexander since he retired from racing in 2018. Very versatile, he has risen quickly through the eventing ranks to compete at Intermediate level, while in dressage he is about to start competing at Medium level and is already doing well at Elementary. He is also doing some showjumping, as well as team chasing. Charlotte says: “Saphy loves life and particularly performing in front of a crowd where he grows another hand and knows everyone is admiring him.”
7. SMAD PLACE Sire - Smadoun 14yo Ridden by Sarah Holden Winner of the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup, Smad Place was entrusted to Sarah Holden in 2019, although he is still owned by his wonderfully supportive owner, Mrs Peter Andrews. After a slow start due to Sarah having baby and then Covid, the pair have recently really cemented their partnership and they have been out to some local unaffiliated dressage events and had fun cross-country schooling. The plan is to continue doing dressage over the winter months and then to do more RoR events, including racecourse parades and competitions affiliated to RoR.
8. THOMAS CRAPPER Sire - Tamure 14yo Ridden by Harriet Dickin Twice a winner at Cheltenham, Thomas Crapper, known as ‘Crappy’ at home, was purchased as a foal by Robin Dickin’s wife Claire. A family favourite from a young age, ‘Crappy’ knows exactly what he wants, he hates the snow and won’t go out in it, but he loves hunting and the solarium. Since retiring, he has been retrained by Harriet who has ridden him throughout his racing career and new career. He goes hunting in the winter, showing in the summer and won two classes at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree.
9. WAYWARD PRINCE Sire - Alflora 17yo Ridden by Hilary Parrott Winner of the 2015 Scottish Grand National, Wayward Prince was broken-in and ridden away by Megan Harper at Martin Jones’ pre-training yard before his racing career. He returned to the yard in 2017 to retrain in his retirement. Holidaying in the summer, as he did when racing, Wayward Prince goes hunting in the winter, competes in dressage and showjumping classes, leads youngsters on the gallops and to top it off they try to squeeze a few one-day events in in the spring. She says: “He’s simply extraordinary and very much loved.”
10 ZARKANDAR Sire - Azamour 14yo Ridden by Olivia Fforde A Grade 1 winner at Cheltenham, Aintree and Auteuil, Zarkandar amassed almost £1 million in prize money. A half-brother to the Arc winning mare Zarkava, he is known as Gino at home and was retired from racing in 2018 when Paul Nicholls gifted Zarkandar to Lucinda Sims. Since then he has adjusted very well to a slower pace of life, starting as Lucinda’s happy hacker before graduating to dressage and hunter trials. Writing a book on any subject is a challenge few of us ever choose to undertake. But for Stevie Fisher putting together his own autobiography was not only a painstaking task but an unimaginable triumph over adversity. As a championship-winning farrier, Stevie’s life revolved around horses. Whether he was riding, shoeing or roaring them on at Cheltenham Racecourse they were at the heart of everything he did. But in August 2014 his life changed forever when he suffered a massive stroke. Ever since he has been totally incapacitated by ‘Locked In Syndrome’, a condition which has left him completely paralysed and only able to communicate via his left eyelid. However, undeterred, Stevie set about turning his own tragic circumstances into an inspirational and uplifting record of a life well lived, one blink at a time.

Crossing The Course
• Full refunds for tickets will be given if racing is abandoned before the first race.
Racegoers in Club may cross into the centre of the course to watch races.
• A 50% refund will be given if racing is abandoned before the third or feature race.
You will be informed over the PA system if a decision has been made otherwise preventing access should it be felt the quality of the racing surface is being affected by racegoers crossing the course.
No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting. Applications for refunds should be sent within one month after the fixture except for The Festival™ presented by Magners when refunds will be processed automatically. No refunds will be given for tickets that are purchased and then not required or used.
Admission Policy
The management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone, and to remove any person, without assigning a reason if their behaviour is considered to be antisocial or likely to be disruptive.
Alcohol
Please would racegoers kindly note that the bringing of your own alcoholic drink into the Racecourse is strictly prohibited. For your own enjoyment and to avoid disappointment please observe this restriction. Please respect our neighbours when leaving the racecourse. No alcohol is to be taken off site.
Benches
Please would racegoers refrain from standing on the benches on the lawns in front of the grandstands. As well as an obvious safety risk, it also blocks the view of a number of your fellow racegoers.
Dogs
Regrettably, dogs other than guide dogs are not allowed within the enclosures.

The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegeors that the first aid room is located above the parade ring behind the See You Then Bar

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone without assigning a reason for so doing.
Parade Ring Access
In the interests of safety, access to the parade ring is strictly limited to Owners and Trainers with runners in the race, British Horseracing Authority Officials and Racecourse Officials who are on duty at the meeting and Emergency Service Personnel. Those people holding badges or accreditation that allow access to the Parade Ring are asked to refrain from entering this area unless it is absolutely necessary in the course of their business.
In-Running Betting
Please note that in-running betting is not allowed in any public areas of Cheltenham Racecourse. Any racegoer found to be in breach of this rule will be removed from the racecourse. For the full terms and conditions of entry, please visit the racecourse website.
Touts
JCR is taking strong action against touts. Touting is seen by some as a legitimate way of buying or selling last minute tickets but many tickets sold by touts are fraudulent or counterfeit. An injunction has been issued preventing touting at the Racecourse. You could yourself be breaking the law by dealing with a tout. Genuine tickets sales are available at all the entrances or in advance via the Racecourse website.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
