TODAY’S RACING

TODAY’S SPONSORS

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

We wish you a very warm welcome for an evening of great racing, followed by music in the Sports Bar. The nine race card begins at 4.00pm with seven lightly raced two year olds and the fifth race features six maiden three year olds with two of them of noteworthy interest: Abando was trained until recently in Germany, where he had some decent form and Valedictory was an expensive yearling purchase for Godolphin that ran well at Newmarket in a class 2 race on his only start this year.

The third race tonight is the second leg of the Timeform Sprint Series, culminating in the final on our last meeting of the year on 18th December. This qualifier has attracted another competitive field with eleven declared runners with a mixture of tough and hardened older sprinters, alongside some young and still improving ones. Finding the winner will not be easy!

Best of luck and have a great evening.

For more information about any of our upcoming events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

CITY SELECTIONS

RIVER SPEY may have disappointed when favourite at Thirsk last time out, but he is much better judged on his two previous efforts at York and Goodwood when placing in valuable contests. Kieran Shoemark returning to the saddle is a plus and he is preferred to One And Gone, who shaped well on debut at Ripon in August before an average effort last time out at Newbury. A stablemate of the selection, Melodical may also have a say in proceedings.

Though RIVER SPEY failed to reproduce the form of his solid Goodwood and York efforts when third in a big-field Thirsk novice last month, he wasn’t discredited by any means, particularly bearing in mind that he had to make his effort widest of the first three home. If he takes to the all-weather at the first attempt he should prove much too good for his six rivals. One And Gone and the selection’s stablemate Melodical can fill the places.

Great British Bonus Scheme

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

CITY SELECTIONS

This can go the way of BUXTED REEL, who was narrowly denied at Southwell last time out and connections have now called upon recent Group 1-winning jockey Luke Morris to gain something extra. A winner over C&D last October off 4lb lower, Tom Lacey’s charge gets the vote ahead of Cardinal Point, who has not been beaten far on her last two starts since scoring at Lingfield early last month. Stepping up in trip looks like a good move for Rolling Luck, who cannot be ruled out either

CARDINAL POINT has found her feet for this yard in recent weeks, opening her account at Lingfield and finishing a solid third at Kempton either side of a C&D near miss when just touched off by New York Minute, who gave that form a boost when bolting up at Southwell next time. She earns the vote. Buxted Reel’s form figures over this C&D read 221 and another bold show is likely, while this trip could be just what the doctor ordered where Rogue Empire is concerned and he also needs considering.

The James Tate stable can do little wrong at present and this appeals as a good opportunity for DARK ANGEL STAR on her nursery debut following a taking success at Newcastle over this distance. CITY SELECTIONS

GENERAL ASSEMBLY has shown signs of a return to form recently with a placed effort backed up by finishing a respectable fourth over C&D last time. Clare Hobson’s charge was winning off a 3lb higher mark back in March and could launch a strong challenge back in this lower grade. Startling won here last month, but third-placed Cabeza De Llave has a more favourable draw today and may well turn the tables, while Fancy Dancer could shape well back over this shorter trip.

CITY SELECTIONS

VALEDICTORY makes a belated return to action having shown plenty of ability in both outings so far The son of Cracksman has been gelded since finishing a close fourth over today’s trip at Newmarket in April and may well prove good enough on his reappearance. El Rehaiby shaped well when fifth over a mile at Lingfield on debut and this extra yardage looks likely to suit, while Solarize is a newcomer to note.

VALEDICTORY has shaped with plenty of promise in a pair of strong maidens and may be able to get off the mark on first start since being gelded. Well-bred Rehaiby should improve from his encouraging debut and rates the main danger, while Abando (placed in a German Group 3) was well below form on his stable/U.K. debut and it remains to be seen if first-time cheekpieces have the desired effect.

CITY SELECTIONS

A change of scenery has seemingly worked the oracle for RASCAL RECKNELL. The son of Wootton Bassett has won two of his three starts since switching to Mick Appleby’s yard and looks worth sticking with given the ease of last month’s C&D success. Signcastle City returns to the Polytrack with a shout off his current mark, while Newsreader has improved for the application of cheekpieces and also merits consideration.

SUZUKA was far from disgraced in second at Kempton last month and the handicapper may have been kind to leave her rating alone for that performance. Roger Varian’s filly is steadily improving and the daughter of Bated Breath looks well placed to shed her maiden tag. Sahana struck by half a length over 7f at Lingfield and needs considering for the in-form David Simcock yard. Mamma Maria looks best of the rest.

GREY PHOENIX showed improved form when fourth on her reappearance/handicap debut at Kempton (despite not been ideally placed) and with that form working out well, she may be able to get off the mark on second start in handicap company Suzuka arrives in good form and looked the winner for a long way under an aggressive ride in a similar event last time. She should go well again while Mamma Maria could get back on the up returning to 1m.

CITY SELECTIONS

Night Arc ran better than his odds of 25/1 suggested he would when fifth at Kempton eight days ago and is considered off the same mark. However, it’s hard to get away from ALMIZAN. Mark Usher’s filly accounted for her nearest rival by a length and a half over 7f here last month and only has a 4lb higher rating to contend with. If the four-year-old can back that effort up, she could be the one to beat. Taskheer is another to note.
