TONIGHT’S RACING

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse
We have an eight-race card for you tonight on what is forecast to be a rather rainy evening with the chance of some thundery showers.
We can’t let the weather dampen our spirits with a fascinating card in front of us: the evening kicks off with a couple of maidens, followed by two competitive handicaps.
The fifth race is an interesting contest with nine lightly raced, middle distance fillies, two of which were very expensive yearling purchases; this race could well throw up a filly that progresses to go on to better things later on this year. Cape Flora, costing 260,000 gns, and Sea The Wonder, costing 310,000 gns, have excellent pedigrees and must have been good-looking yearlings to have commanded such high yearling prices, so it will be interesting to follow their progress.
I hope you have a lovely evening.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

MISS MAMBO is chanced to make a winning debut in this fillies’ maiden under Rossa Ryan. Eclipser showed plenty of promise when a close fourth at Windsor, doing best of the newcomers, and should step forward. Availability brings a strong sprinting pedigree to the table, while fellow newcomer No Way Hozay, from a smart family, completes the shortlist.
Great British Bonus Scheme
The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

NIFTY overcame a tardy start to finish third over the minimum trip at Salisbury on debut. Doing all her best work in the closing stages, Richard Hughes’ filly is taken to launch a serious challenge over this extra furlong. Racing to School
Since 2022, Chelmsford City Racecourse has actively supported Racing to School, an educational charity dedicated to inspiring young minds through free activity days at racing venues. Last week, pupils from Great Leighs Primary School enjoyed a fun and educational day at the racecourse as a post-SATs treat—learning all about the world of racing, dressing up in jockey silks, and with some even returning later with their parents to enjoy an exciting evening of racing
Former jump jockey Ollie McPhail, Programme Manager from Racing to School, spoke about his career after racing; “I have been very fortunate to retrain for a second job that I love. The work we do offers real value to young people and promotes so many positive aspects about racing-as a sport and a potential employer. I enjoy challenging the school children, and their teachers, to tune into everyday racing activities like checking a jockey’s weight or working out race distances as a way of improving their maths skills. Many of them want to learn more and say they want to come back.
We are so grateful to all the team at Chelmsford City for allowing the charity to invite schools to have such a privileged day of learning. The racecourse is keen to strengthen its links with the community, and we look forward to inviting more schools to take part in the programme”.

Retraining of Racehorses
Established in 2000 RoR believes every former racehorse deserves a life well lived, with a mission to safeguard their wellbeing and ensure they find new purpose and loving homes. Every year, more than 2,000 racehorses retire from racing in Great Britain. Like people changing jobs, these horses need to learn new skills, adapt to new environments and sometimes find new homes.
RoR provides training and education for owners to build lifelong partnerships with their retired racehorses, while also promoting the versatility of these horses across a range of equestrian activities. In addition, RoR supports former racehorses in times of need through its dedicated welfare initiatives.
Chelmsford City Racecourse makes regular contributions to RoR and in 2024 joined the RoR scheme by adopting a racecourse ambassador, and today we welcome Manny Twenty-year-old Manny was formerly trained by Brian McMath and since retiring in 2011 from his short racing career, has been training with Chelsea Rowe.
His retraining was done with a combination of hunting, jumping dressage and showing which he really loved, and he was taken to clinics supported by RoR, and good show producers.
Chelsea describes him as being “a cheeky chappy, one in a million, and like a labrador very chilled out and absolutely laps up attention, if he could he would stand and be groomed all day long! He’s generally a really sweet boy with kids, he absolutely adores them, especially if they come armed with carrots, his favourite treat!
He’s been an incredible show horse who really comes alive in the show ring, taking me to my first ever Royal International competition, and qualifying multiple times for the Hickstead retraining of racehorses final, which he’s again qualified for at the grand age of 20!”

An open contest in which only a tentative vote can go to the Marco Botti-trained YUVRAAJ. A 5lb rise for a narrow victory at Kempton would appear harsh but he’s open to further improvement, especially now stepped up to 1m2f. The addition of first-time cheekpieces could eke out more from Riyadh Gem, who should appreciate a return to the all-weather. Others to note include The Hrse Horse and Aqab.

A case can be made for most of these but the vote goes to Sir Mark Prescott’s AQAB who appeals as a likely improver now he goes into handicaps with his stamina unlocked more. The Hrse Horse heads the list of dangers on the back of his very good Windsor second, although the likes of Riyadh Gem, Word of Mouth and Enrolled all command plenty of respect too.

Cape Flora will find this easier than her recent Ascot assignment and the daughter of Kingman merits respect, as does newcomer Sea The Wonder, who fetched 310,000gns as a yearling. Fourth in a warm Newmarket maiden on her debut, she could take a step forward now upped in distance.

A confident vote goes to CLOCKMAKER, who made a triumphant return when defeating a subsequent winner at Doncaster last month. David Simcock’s charge is only 2lb higher back on the all-weather and with improvement likely, he looks set to double his tally That being said, Kingdom Of Stars is 2lb well-in having struck the woodwork at Kempton latest and he ought to go well, along with Dancingwithmyself.

CITY SELECTIONS
Adelaide Bay has won two of his three starts this season including an easy C&D victory in April, and he can go close despite an added 3lb from the handicapper CITY CAPTAIN won despite being left with plenty to do on his first start of the season at Pontefract and, if he takes another step forward, a 2lb rise looks unlikely to stop him. Kodi Banphrionsa could do better on her handicap debut.

PLAY SMARTER
C&D winner ADELAIDE BAY quickly got back on the up to make it 2 wins from his last 3 starts at Wolverhampton 30 days ago and the manner of that success suggests he may yet have more to offer City Captain improved to make a winning return for new connections at Pontefract in April and he’s a big threat. Kodi Banphrionsa is a handicap newcomer to note in the betting.
