TONIGHT’S SPONSOR

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

Our feature race this evening is The bet365 Cardinal Conditions Stakes for 3 year olds only, over 1 mile with total prize money of £100,000 on offer. This race has grown in stature year-on-year since its inception in 2019 with this year’s race looking the strongest so far.

Of the seven runners tonight, four of them are rated over 100 with Yaroogh setting the standard with a rating of 106; he is a Listed race winner and Group placed over 7 furlongs, tonight being his first attempt at a mile. Luther is a Listed race winner over a mile, Detain is a two-time winner, Wolf of Badenoch is a winner and Group 2 placed, Port of Light won by 5 lengths last time out at Chelmsford, Hott Shott is a two-time winner and Quai de Bethune is a winner and was only beaten a length by Hott Shott.

It promises to be a great race, so come out to see them in the paddock and make your pick.

Good luck and I hope you have a lovely evening - win, lose or draw!

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

CITY SELECTIONS

HIJO DE LA LUNA was only narrowly denied when runner-up over this trip at Newcastle last week and the five-year-old is very hard to oppose off the same mark. Tactical Control also hit the crossbar on his most recent outing and the switch to a first-time visor may spark some progression. Night Arc edges out the returning Stintino Sunset to be the pick of the remainder.

Plenty in with a squeak and it could be worth taking a chance on GLOBAL RESOLVE, who was runner-up over C&D back in November and returns after an inauspicious start over hurdles with the excellent Sean Dylan Bowen in the plate. Heading up the dangers is Tactical Control, who found just one too good at Wolverhampton last week and remains well treated on his best form, with Hijo de la Luna and Night Arc taken to fight out minor honours.

CITY SELECTIONS

PARADOXICAL’s winning run came to an end when a close second over an extended mile at Wolverhampton 10 days ago. That said, he’s 2lb lower here and it would be no surprise to see him score once again. Shahbaz also filled the runner-up spot at the same venue on his most recent outing and Ian Williams’ gelding should not be underestimated. The shortlist is completed by Free Speech and Cavalry Call.

PARADOXICAL has been thriving since the application of cheekpieces, denied in his bid for the 5-timer but finishing clear of the rest when runner-up at Wolverhampton last time, so he is taken to resume winning ways in his current form. Shahbaz has been heading back in the right direction for his current yard and is feared most, ahead of Odin Legacy.

WALNUT outran big odds when filling third place on his racecourse bow over 6f at Wolverhampton last month. With the benefit of that experience, the three-year-old could be hard to beat here Cape Sovereign showed ability as a juvenile and has to be noted having had gelding and wind operations since his latest appearance in September. Any market support for Honest Courtesan on her debut would be interesting.

CITY SELECTIONS

Now that SIR RODNEYREDBLOOD has regained the winning thread after a determined performance over C&D last time, the eight-year-old may have plenty more to come and he can follow up off 3lb higher with Billy Loughnane taking over in the saddle. Narrowly denied at Lingfield on her most recent start, Rebel Star remains unexposed after just six starts, while Southbank has been consistent of late without getting his head in front. The in-form Midnightattheoasis is another to note if turning up here after an engagement at Lingfield on Tuesday

A Listed winner last season, Derby entry LUTHER disappointed when last seen in the Royal Lodge but remains a colt of considerable potential at three, being by Frankel out of a mare that won the Musidora. Impressive in two starts at Kempton before a steep rise in grade caught him out in the Futurity, Detain must be a leading contender, as well as Yaroogh, who should be primed for this after a spin at Al Uqda in February.
