TODAY’S RACING

TODAY’S SPONSORS

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

On our last fixture of October, we have eight races for you, with the first race at 4.45pm.

I would like to draw your attention to the 7.15pm race, in which there are seven runners, all of whom, except Juno Star, are previous winners here at Chelmsford City Racecourse.

Between them they have won a total of 20 races at the course and amassed more than £130,000 in prize money here, which is a phenomenal achievement. The list is headed by the amazing Sir Rodneyredblood, who has won eight races, closely followed by Dark Side Prince with five wins, Shalaa Asker with three, My Turn Now with two and Papa Don’t Preach and Global Effort with one apiece.

All of us at the racecourse love to see these horses returning here time-after-time – they become like old friends!

The big question tonight is whose turn is it this evening?

Have a lovely evening.

For more information about any of our upcoming events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Supporting the Homeless and Vulnerable Community of Chelmsford

During October we are featuring Sanctus, one of our 10 chosen charities Chelmsford City Racecourse is supporting as part of our ‘10 Years of Community’ campaign.

Sanctus, a Chelmsford charity, has supported the homeless and vulnerable for over 13 years, offering a safe, non-judgmental space for more than 800 people. Founded by Emma Goldie and Stephen Turoff, who have experienced homelessness, Sanctus began as a small café providing food and companionship for rough sleepers at a time when Chelmsford had no day centre. It now offers breakfast, lunch, a food pantry, and a sandwich station six days a week, welcoming anyone facing poverty, loss, poor health, or other barriers to stability. Through its Hub Support team and partnerships with the NHS, CHP, small businesses, and local artists, Sanctus helps with housing, debts, addiction, employment, and domestic abuse. The charity also runs a Sanctus shop to further support its work.

Georgia’s Story (name changed)

Georgia, 21, lost both parents young with her father to suicide a year after her mother’s death. Raised by her grandmother, she excelled in primary school but later entered foster care, where she suffered abuse and neglect. Struggling with anxiety and declining studies, she moved to Chelmsford to live with a sibling, but the relationship turned toxic.

Socially isolated and battling addictions to crack cocaine, meth, and alcohol, Georgia reached a suicidal crisis at the side of a train track before finding long-term support with Sanctus. She is now housed in a supported housing scheme. Sanctus provided her with a laptop to help her stay occupied through games and creative writing. Her powerful poems have been shared on social media and in the café, and she hopes to write a book about her life to inspire others facing similar struggles.

Sanctus’s Own Success Story

Sanctus prides itself on inclusivity, with many staff and volunteers in recovery. Dave’s story exemplifies this. Years ago, he was a service user, struggling with heroin and crack addiction, living in a tent under a bridge, and working a physical job. He would visit the café for food and coffee, often falling asleep there. One day he began sweeping the café floor, which became regular, leading to a full-time volunteer role. Sanctus helped him find accommodation and supported his recovery. Today, employed by Sanctus Hot Wheels as he is now known uses his experience to help others sleeping rough.

Beneficiary Denise

Team members from the racecourse went along to the café and shop providing a friendly face and to lend a helping hand, which is where Jo (Head of Community & Charity) met Denise.

Denise, who has four children and has been a carer and worked in catering since age 17 was worried about becoming dependent on alcohol after suffering abuse from violent partners. A friend recommended Sanctus as she was very vulnerable, depressed, and living in a women’s refuge. She was helped by a psychologist who determined she had been financially abused for 6 months.

Denise said “Without Sanctus I wouldn’t have a purpose. They help me get out of bed in the morning, I have made friends, had counselling and registered here with a doctor I love art which I have become involved with, and my pictures have been displayed in Chelmsford Museum gallery. When it was my birthday, they bought me a cake, and all signed a card for me. I am now able to go to the theatre on my own and stay over at friends”

The Continuing Fight Against Homelessness

Sanctus currently in need of a new cooker, is funded by grants, donations, campaigns and fundraising events, and is reliant on volunteers. Their main goal is to gain further financial stability to be able to continue the great work that they do.

Homelessness is a very real crisis across the UK and can happen to anyone. Many of us are much closer to the reality of homelessness than ever before, due to many reasons that is not always about sleeping rough in a door way!

Our Commitment to Horse Welfare r Welf

At Chelmsford City Racecourse, the welfare of our horses is our highest priority, and this commitment is most visible in the continuous improvements made to our All-Weather racing surface. The surface has been expertly rewaxed and enhanced with added fibre to reduce kickback and improve safety. READER should have learned plenty from her debut second at Goodwood earlier this month and ticks plenty of the right boxes. A switch to Polytrack is unlikely to prevent another bold showing from the daughter of Mohaather and a breakthrough victory may beckon. WOODY Y FERNANDEZ may have found his latest fifth over 5f at Redcar on the sharp side and this return to 6f may prove fruitful. The introduction of a hood may help Jennie Candlish’s charge settle better and he edges the vote over Miss Ayala. The daughter of James Garfield scored over 7f here on her penultimate outing and she isn’t taken lightly. Market support for nursery/stable debutant Kuiama would be interesting.

FOUETTE successfully stepped into handicap company at Southwell 23 days ago and the daughter of Acclamation is an attractive proposition, with a 5lb rise suggested as readily workable at this stage of her development.
