Spring has finally arrived, bringing some warmer weather and some much-needed sunshine. As our spirits are lifted in the sunshine, we have lots to look forward to in the coming months, beginning next week with the £100,000 Cardinal Stakes. This race has been the stepping stone for numerous horses going on to Group class and international success.
On Good Friday, there is something for the whole family, from the Kids zone to the Games zone to our resident DJ, alongside, what promises to be, a fantastic afternoon of racing with £250,000 in prize money on offer. This is always a great day, so do go to our website and book your tickets to avoid any disappointment.
Thursday, 1st May, sees the £80,000 Listed Chelmer Stakes with top class sprinting fillies bidding for glory. Sunday afternoon, 1st June, has full ITV coverage and £225,000 in prize money. Thursday afternoon, 19th June, is the everpopular Ladies Day with Sister Sledge singing after racing. Tuesday evening, 1st July, features the £100,000 Listed Queen Charlotte Stakes.
I hope you have a great evening and I look forward to seeing you over the coming months.

Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

I MAXIMUS contested a few useful novice/maiden events last season and this looks a good opportunity for him. The son of Zoustar is related to three winners who were all successful on the all-weather, and an official rating of 81 sets a decent standard. Dream Out Loud has filled the runner-up spot on both of his racecourse appearances and is unlikely to be far away, while Cooramook appeals most of the remainder

A tricky opener to solve but the suggestion is DREAM OUT LOUD, who improved on his debut form to finish second once again at Wolverhampton earlier this month and Andrew Balding’s 3-y-o can make it third time lucky Heading up the dangers is Blue RC, who ticks plenty of boxes on paper and represents a yard amongst the winners. I Maximus and Juba can fight out minor honours.

Payment Plan has been progressive during the winter and although below par last time out, it would come as no surprise were he to bounce back in first-time cheekpieces. However, a chance is taken on BLUE SKY BOY, who lost all chance when on the receiving end of interference at Southwell in January. He struck the woodwork over this C&D earlier that month, though, and Paul Attwater’s unexposed stayer would go very close if able to replicate that level of performance. Star Legend is also noted.

A chance can be taken on OLYMPIC MELODY, who was last seen finishing down the field in a novice event at Newmarket in November The daughter of Oasis Dream has since left Rae Guest to join the Kevin Philippart De Foy stable, and it would not come as any great surprise were she to find improvement now sent handicapping. A tendency to race freely continues to affect Watkins’ chance, but he’s a likely contender if settling. Top Star, who sports a first-time hood for his reappearance, is one more to consider

Bust A Moon finished fourth on his handicap bow at Wolverhampton in November and is an interesting contender back down in trip on his first start for David Evans. However, a chance can be taken on RHODES ROYCE, who has failed to fire in her three starts in maiden/novice company, but it would be no surprise if she proved a different proposition off a low opening rating. General Assembly made every yard of the running when holding on by a neck at Wolverhampton and is just 2lb higher A slight concern is the application of first-time cheekpieces after that success and, with that in mind, SECRET HANDSHEIKH gets the nod. John Gallagher’s seven-year-old was last seen finishing second at Brighton in October and has three previous victories on the all-weather to his name. With an ideal draw in stall one, he could be the one to beat. Alafdhal is another to consider

An open-looking sprint but the vote goes to GENERAL ASSEMBLY, who responded well to an attacking ride when scoring at Wolverhampton 12 days ago and Jack Morland’s charge can defy a small rise in the weights sporting first-time cheekpieces. Merrimack can have his latest effort overlooked, so he heads up the dangers returning from a 9-week break, with Alafdhal rounding off the shortlist.

Once Adaay was well positioned when fading into third over track and trip in January, but he goes off an unchanged mark and would be foolish to dismiss. Even so, FRANCISCO makes more appeal. The son of Zoustar finished a close-up third over 6f at Wolverhampton and takes a step back up in distance. This is only his fourth start in a handicap and he could take a step forward to strike. Stella Hogan is another to keep an eye on.

PLAY SMARTER
Despite her quirks, STELLA HOGAN remains very capable at this level if putting it all together and she may be able to record another C&D victory. Flag Carrier and Thomas Equinas both make each-way appeal from their falling handicap marks, while Francisco has the form to win this but comes with risks attached given his habit of starting slowly

In support of Dementia UK, we welcomed volunteer Gordon who shared his personal story with us
We are helping families facing dementia by fundraising as part of our 10 Years of Community campaign.
Every minute another person will develop Dementia, with over 944,000 people in the UK affected by this condition, and their Admiral Nurses provide a lifeline to families up and down the country who urgently need their support. Unfortunately, there is no cure for dementia but there is care.
We met Gordon who sadly lost his wife aged 74 after being diagnosed with dementia following a stroke. Gordon now volunteers, helping raise vital funds for their admiral nurses.
Gordon told us “Not many people realise, that dementia kills more people than heart attacks and cancer put together, it is a shocking statistic, and every donation helps so much and is gratefully received.”
£3

£15

£30

£44
could pay for a carer to receive an hour of one-to-one support from a specialist helpline nurse
When her partner Andy was diagnosed with dementia at the age of 52, Christine struggled to know where to turn.
“As a nurse, I know what dementia ultimately means – so when my partner Andy was diagnosed with young onset dementia, I was devastated. I know that the person I love is going to change. He’s still Andy, but he is going to become a different version. Living with dementia is hard. Your whole life changes. Relationship dynamics change. I’m Andy’s carer now – but I’m also still his partner
As I am only 44 and Andy is 52, we still work daily – me in 12 hour hospice shifts, and Andy as a school sports technician. After work, I manage, cooking, cleaning and finances so I feel there is a lot more pressure on me now
I want Andy to maintain his independence, but dementia has impacted our everyday lives. He gets lost if he goes out on his own, so we’ve had to put a tracker on his phone. Andy struggles more with cooking, and I’m worried the house will burn down if I’m out. He sleepwalks so I am up a lot in the night to keep him safe. I’m constantly worried about him.
When Andy was diagnosed, we received no support. I had to educate myself about dementia and felt very alone. I had to help Andy process his emotions following the diagnosis. He never expected to be told he had dementia, so we both felt very lost and didn’t know where to turn for support.
We discovered Dementia UK and speaking with Admiral Nurse Helen made a huge difference. She provided clear insights into how dementia affects Andy’s brain, helping us process the diagnosis, with reassurance to continue enjoying life. Since then, we’ve participated in challenge events, swam in our local lake, and have signed up for marathons. We’ve learned that, with adjustments, we can live well with dementia, it’s now part of our life.”
For help or to speak to an Admiral Nurse call: 0800 888 6678 or email helpline@dementiauk.org

KITARO KICH’s winning run came to an end with a solid runner-up effort over C&D, but he lost little in defeat and a 2lb rise may not be enough to stop him from getting his head back in front.
