This evening is notable for the size of the fields, which is going to make finding winners more difficult than usual. The opener features thirteen, either unraced or lightly raced, three year olds; Crack on Boys sets the standard after his comfortable four length win up at Newcastle but Port Light, who has been gelded since his second here back in December, should give him a run for his money. Equally, races like these offer a good opportunity for a nice, unraced horse to stamp their authority.
There are a couple of horses running back here after recent wins that look interesting: War Zone in the 7.30pm race looks in good form and Elterwater in the 8.00pm race won comfortably last Saturday. Jenson Benson, also running in the 8.00pm race, is a four-time winner here at Chelmsford and ran a fine race last time out to finish second; he is usually a strong finisher off a strong pace so, given a good gallop, he should go close.
I hope you have an enjoyable evening.

Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A winner on his racecourse debut before finding a useful colt, who has since finished second to the talented Al Qudra in Qatar, too good here in December, PORT LIGHT should have what it takes to defy a penalty. Newcastle scorer Crack On Boys is drawn next door and the son of Cracksman appeals as the most likely threat. Yes Honey is also noted.

This looks to concern penalised pair PORT LIGHT and Crack On Boys, with narrow preference in favour of the former in a refitted hood. That said, the latter was impressive when scoring at Newcastle 23 days ago and strong confidence behind him would put a different slant on things. Final Night and Yes Honey appeal best of the others, particularly with a view to going into handicaps.
The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. CAPUCHINERO has been edging down the weights in recent months and she went agonisingly close under Oliver Carmichael at Wolverhampton last time. Bint Havana Gold (third) has since franked that form by winning at the Midlands venue so, off just 2lb higher, Alice Haynes’ mare appears to hold outstanding claims. Kitaro Kich continues to run well and he remains of interest, while others to note include Sonmarg and handicap debutant Willow’s Kiss.

Plenty of in-form sorts in opposition including KITARO KICH, who, having shed the maiden tag on his penultimate start, again shaped well in the circumstances when third at Wolverhampton 31 days ago and he remains of interest from the same mark. Likeable filly Bint Havana Gold following her last-time-out success, H Key Lails and Capuchinero are just a trio of others to consider

Southbank struck over C&D in December before recording back-to-back second-placed finishes at Wolverhampton and he merits the utmost respect, but the vote goes to JESSE LUC. Mike Murphy’s gelding has won three of his last four starts, with the latest of those coming at Southwell recently. He’s only 3lb higher and with Rossa Ryan back aboard, he looks set to mount another serious challenge. Man On A Mission is another to consider

A few with chances but JESSE LUC is thriving at present and fancied to make light of a 3lb weights rise and complete a hat-trick. Southbank could emerge as the main danger to Mike Murphy’s C&D scorer ahead of Poetic Jack and Man On A Mission.

SMITH took advantage of his much-reduced mark when scoring at Lingfield on his latest outing, having to overcome trouble in running, so a 3lb rise back up in the weights might not be enough to prevent him from following up. Heading the list of dangers is Smokey Malone, who has returned to form on his last 2 starts, with Zooks also considered.

State Of Madness is interesting judged on recent form but a wide berth in stall eight could prove tricky and is a concern. MEHMO, on the other hand, has the benefit of a position near the inside rail and, having gone well here before, he looks worth chancing off a competitive rating on just his second start for his current yard. War Zone also appeals after winning a classified stakes over C&D a fortnight ago.

A tentative vote goes to JENSON BENSON, who bounced back to form with a strong runner-up effort over C&D last time out, where he had the reopposing Cloud Free (third) over a length behind. The latter is now 2lb better off at the weights, but Shaun Lycett’s charge is taken to regain the winning thread at the main expense of Elterwater, who has scored on two of her three starts at this track.

Racing has long been considered a men’s sport, but in recent years, it is the women who have truly taken the reins, and rightly so. Ladies Day at the races has historically been synonymous with grace, style, and a celebration of women in fashion and status. What once served as a welcoming day for women has now evolved into a platform where they shine both in their attire and in the saddle.
Fast forward to 2025, and the spotlight is no longer solely on the elegant attendees; it is equally shared with the fearless and talented female jockeys who compete at the highest levels of the sport.
To honour this evolution, in 2024, Chelmsford City Racecourse proudly launched a multi-channel campaign that showcases the remarkable journeys of some of the most inspirational women on and off the track.

HELM ROCK didn’t do himself any favours when racing wide at Wolverhampton last time out but he did well to finish third, and dropping back to 1m should suit. DECLARED RUNNERS 8
2024: ROSCIOLI 6 9 3 Rossa Ryan 13-2 (Brett Johnson) 8 ran Blinkers worn first time by No. 2. Blinkers worn by No. 3. Tongue Strap worn by No. 2.
Running for the first time since Wind Surgery No. 8. Stewards Note:
LONGLAI: Following its run on 12/12/2024 it was reported that the horse was denied a clear run late-on.
SHIMMERING SPIN: Following its run on 3/9/2024 it was reported that the horse hung left-handed throughout.
Probable S.P’s: 7-2 Helm Rock (GB), 9-2 Urban Lion (GB), High Point (IRE), 6-1 Tempus (GB), 15-2 Longlai (FR), 12-1 Shimmering Spin (USA), 14-1 Charming Whisper (GB), 25-1 Court of Session (GB)
A tight-knit handicap in which HELM ROCK edges the vote on the back of his good recent Wolverhampton third. Urban Lion is also weighted to have a big say and could emerge as the main danger after a break, although Tempus and Longlai both need considering too.
As part of our ‘10 Years of Community’ campaign, and fundraising for 10 selected charities in 2025, we kick off with The Injured Jockeys Fund. Established in 1964 after the devastating accidents that ended the careers of Tim Brookshaw and Paddy Farrell in the Grand National, the Fund has since supported thousands of jockeys, with over £22m in grants and £75m in charitable expenditure.
At Chelmsford City Racecourse, we recognise the importance of supporting equine charities like the Injured Jockeys Fund, and today we are delighted to welcome the Fund to the racecourse to raise awareness and fundraise. Ahead of their visit Jo, Head of Community, spoke with beneficiary Laura Pearson and coach Glen Reed about the support provided to injured and active jockeys.
Laura Pearson, a jockey who began her career at 18, experienced success, including a Royal Ascot win in 2021. However, after a fall at Epsom a year later, she suffered a fractured C7 vertebra in her neck and spent six months in rehabilitation at Peter O’Sullevan House. Laura reflected, “It was tough, but I’m lucky to have had the support from the Fund with physiotherapists like Glen and Emma helping me through it.”
Laura also shared her appreciation for the Fund’s continuous support: “If I didn’t have this facility, I don’t know how long it would have been before I got moving again, the Fund is always just a phone call away, especially for mental health support. I’ll 100 percent continue to come here, and they’d be lucky to kick me out!”
Reflecting on what it was like to get back on a horse following her injury Laura laughed and said “I actually commented at the time that it was like being back home, and the hardest part of being injured was not being on a horse which I’ve had the pleasure of doing my whole life.”
Glen Reed, strength and conditioning coach, explained the role of the team in helping jockeys stay fit and recover from injuries. He works with both active and recovering jockeys, focusing on small gains to improve performance. He emphasized that recovery can be challenging and isolating for jockeys, but the team offers full support, including gym work, mental health care, massage, and hydrotherapy
Glen also noted that the Fund relies solely on donations and public generosity, with their three UK centres costing £6 million to run. “There is a common misconception that jockeys have to contribute to their recovery, so the racing community is instrumental in fundraising, and every donation is highly valued.”
Lisa Hancock CEO, Injured Jockeys Fund added:
“The Injured Jockeys Fund are very grateful to Chelmsford City Racecourse and the racing public for their kind generosity via this fantastic initiative; we rely totally on charitable income & funds raised each year. We wish you all the best in your 10th Anniversary year and thank you for all your support”.
