TONIGHT’S RACING

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse
On what promises to be a busy and exciting evening of racing with eight races and 92 declared runners, we are looking forward to seeing some thrilling finishes and hope that you manage to find some winners.
There are one or two interesting runners to mention to help you in your quest: Participle, in the 6.20pm race, was only beaten a nose at Salisbury by Qilin Queen on her only start. Qilin Queen then went on to win a Listed race last weekend at Newbury. That level of form should make her hard to beat tonight, unless there is something exceptional in the race.
In the next race at 6.50 pm, the John Gosden-trained, Mudbir, finished second at Newmarket on his only previous start, singling him out as a colt with a bright future but there are some unraced horses that could well give him a run for his money.
The second division of that maiden does not appear to have a standout horse but maidens, at this time of year, often throw up horses that have made significant improvement over the winter and are worth following in the year ahead.
Good luck and have a lovely evening.

Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet
If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

MEADRAM travelled strongly when scoring by a length over track and trip on his most recent start and is just 3lb higher now Marcus Tregoning’s seven-year-old remains feasibly treated off a mark of 65 and looks the way to go. Crafter has taken the silver medal home on two of his last three outings and should remain competitive, while Egoiste isn’t out of it either.

GRAND DUCHESS OLGA was always doing enough when going in by a neck over 1m6f at Wolverhampton last month and the assessor may have been kind to only put her up 2lb. With a previous C&D victory to her name, she could prove hard to beat once again. Sullivan Bay made the frame at this venue when last seen on the Flat and has since undergone a wind operation, so he is one to watch out for Stretch is next best.

Probable S.P’s: 11-4 Mudbir (GB), 7-2 Explode (FR), 8-1 Antipodes (IRE), 9-1 Open Road (IRE), Deauville Blue (FR), 14-1 Sea Robbo Run (IRE), 22-1 Team Player (GB), 28-1 Perry Mason (GB), 50-1 Belaya River (FR), Dor’s Dream (GB), Grand Harbour (GB), 66-1 Miss Tinkerbell (GB), Royal Emblem (GB), 80-1 Believe In Success (GB), 100-1 Take The A Train (GB), 150-1 Senor Cortez (IRE)
The choicely-bred MUDBIR shaped with definite promise amidst inexperience when runner-up on debut in a Newmarket novice back in the autumn. Boasting all the hallmarks of one sure to do better as a 3-y-o, he shades the vote ahead of Explode, who produced a solid debut display himself when third from a wide draw at Kempton 45 days ago. Deauville Blue on debut for a new yard and newcomers Antipodes and Open Road also command a second look.

This looks between RIVER KING and Competizione, both of whom pulled well clear of the rest when finding just one too good at Nottingham and Doncaster respectively earlier this month. Choosing between them is not at all easy, with River King shading preference. Newcomer Mawood is appealing on paper and it’ll be interesting to see how he shapes up in the betting.

Narrowly denied at Wolverhampton last time out, SMOOTH SILESIE has been found an ideal opportunity to regain the winning thread, with Rossa Ryan taking over in the saddle. Having shaped as though his turn is near dropped to 0-70 company on turf recently, TWILIGHT MADNESS is very appealing back on the all-weather Indeed, the 7-y-o boasts a far more compelling strike rate on synthetics (6-26 compared to 1-14 on turf) and is now 8lb below his last winning mark. The consistent Smooth Silesie will surely be on the premises if ready to go following a break, while Agostino and Dark Side Prince both make some each-way appeal.

A course-and-distance winner off the same mark in February, TEMPLE BRUER could be ideally berthed in stall four to have the race unfold to suit his style of running. Forever Noah and Safari Dream are others to note.

COMBUSTION: Following its run on 4/4/2025 it was reported that the jockey was slow to remove the blindfold. YOSHIMI: Following its run on 20/4/2025 it was reported that the trainer could not explain the poor run.
Probable S.P’s: 9-4 Safari Dream (IRE), 13-2 Combustion (GB), 7-1 Forever Noah (GB), 10-1 Bill Plumb (IRE), 11-1 Thomas Equinas (GB), 12-1 Dark Dreamer (GB), 16-1 Temple Bruer (GB), 18-1 El Hibri (IRE), 22-1 Gundogan (GB), 25-1 Yoshimi (IRE), 28-1 Nelson Rose (GB), 66-1 Kalik (IRE)
SAFARI DREAM escapes a penalty for last week’s Salisbury success and he will prove a tough nut to crack with Oisin Murphy booked. The 5-y-o is winless so far on the all-weather but he’s only had half-a-dozen bites at the cherry on synthetics and has performed well both here and at Southwell already this year Dark Dreamer gets the nod for forecast purposes on the back of an encouraging effort here last month. Bill Plumb and Forever Noah are others to consider

PLAY SMARTER
BOLD SUITOR was a shade unfortunate to bump into a plot at Kempton earlier this month but, from an unchanged mark, Craig Benton’s charge is fancied to go one better at the expense of Bizarre Law, who ended a long losing run at Wolverhampton 10 days ago and remains of interest now back in the groove. Kranjcar has won 2 of his last 3 on turf and can edge out Ballybaymoonshiner for the bronze medal.
