TONIGHT’S SPONSORS

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse
This evening begins with two races for two year olds, the first over 7f and the second over 6f; it is always fascinating to watch these races at this time of year and, particularly, to see if any of the horses displays above average ability.
The big summer festivals start soon with Royal Ascot, then the July meeting at Newmarket and on to Glorious Goodwood, so it is exciting to follow any of these horses’ careers to decide whether they have sufficient ability to compete against the best of their generation. The 1m2f maiden at 7.30pm has some well-bred individuals that are either lightly raced or unraced with Arjwan costing €470,000 as a yearling, which should suggest that the race could throw up a winner of interest; unfortunately, with limited previous form to go on, a paddock inspection may be the only way of finding a winner.
The remaining four handicaps look as competitive as ever and, on such a lovely evening, please do come out to the paddock to admire these majestic animals and wonder at their power – people talk about the thoroughbred having “the look of eagles” and there was never a truer word spoken!
Have a great evening.
Neil Graham Racing Director

Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Newcomer Enhancer commands respect on his first start, but racecourse experience counts and this may go the way of the Sean Woods-trained PAROLE OFFICER. Charlie Johnston has his horses running well and Timeforshowcasing looks interesting on her debut as a daughter of Showcasing, with Jason Hart booked to ride. Somebody came home runner-up for the second time at Newmarket when put in his place by Logi Bear, and he could be the one to chase home JANE OF THE JUNGLE. Fifth at Brighton on debut, she stepped up to finish second over C&D last week and is expected to have further improvement to come.

SOMEBODY could prove hard to beat on the back of a very creditable second at Newmarket last month, when pulling clear of the remainder of the field. He can open his account at the expense of recent course runner-up Jane of the Jungle, with Timeforshowcasing an interesting newcomer for a trainer/jockey combination who scored with a debutante at this course earlier this month. CHEEKY STANLEY won here over a furlong further in March but pulled too hard to see his race out at Kempton last month and has been gelded since. If he is allowed to bowl along in front dropping back in trip, he may prove difficult to catch. She Went Whoosh won at Lingfield off her current mark and warrants serious consideration, despite top-weight. Jagetme wasn’t beaten far in third at Salisbury and could grab another placing.

Cheeky Stanley showed a gutsy attitude when scoring at this course previously and may bounce back having gone off too hard at Kempton last time, while Jagetme has been knocking on the door with two third-place finishes in recent handicaps and may fare best of the rest if breaking more sharply

A taking winner over a mile here on his penultimate start before a highly creditable second over shorter at Wolverhampton in March, HARRYELLA looks the one to beat with the in-form Jack Doughty taking over in the saddle. BEAMING LIGHT was backed from 28/1 down to 13/2 on his debut for David Loughnane and were it not for a troubled run, would surely have justified the support with a win. Assuming the five-year-old negotiates a smoother passage, he can gain compensation for that narrow defeat here Several of the rest have been struggling to find their form but the likes of Laurentia, who is a previous C&D winner, Mitigator and Saved Lizzie all hold each-way chances based on peak efforts.

BEAMING LIGHT created a strong impression when finishing with purpose at Wolverhampton on stable debut, clearly unlucky not to win. He’s taken to go one better back down in trip here Kessaar Power, a previous course winner, disappointed after a quick turnaround recently but remains one to be positive about. Analytical Engine makes some appeal on handicap debut with a first-time tongue strap applied.

Dutch Finale was a comfortable winner at Lingfield last week but a 6lb penalty and wide draw hinder his chance of a quick follow-up success. With that in mind, it might pay to side with NUBOUGH, who dead-heated for first place over C&D last month and his proven liking for this circuit is very persuasive factor. H Key Lails and Gundogan are a couple of others that could ensue the low-drawn contenders have a big say this time.
