Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse for our biggest raceday of the year with fun for all the family. The day starts with the Shetland ponies roaring down the straight at 12.45pm. This is followed by eight races with the feature race of the afternoon, being the £75,000 bet365 Conditions Stakes at 4.30pm, in which the William Haggas-trained filly, Sky Majesty, looks likely to start the red-hot favourite. She was the winner of all three of her races last year, culminating in a convincing win in the Group 2, Criterium de Maison-Laffitte, at Chantilly.

The second race, The Darley EBF Maiden Stakes, looks to have some interesting contenders: Critical Aclaim has finished 2nd on both of his previous starts, Vecu finished a good 2nd last time out and the eye-catching booking of Ryan Moore on the unraced filly, Christmas Gift, could be significant.

As you would expect with £265,000 of prize money on offer, the racing looks highly competitive and winners will be hard to find but I wish you the best of luck.

Have a great afternoon.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

Trainer

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

2015

The racecourse opened its doors to the public, with the first race being won by the Godolphin owned Tryster, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by Adam Kirby.

First major music concert, when Madness played after racing to a crowd of more than 10,000

The racecourse quickly established a reputation for some of the most generous prize money in British racing and an attendance of more than 80,000

2016

World-class entertainment with concerts from Simply Red, Rick Astley and Jools Holland among others.

Staged the prestigious rearranged Greenham meeting following the decision to abandon the original Newbury fixture. This card featured three Group races and was incredibly well-received by the racing community.

2017

A trailblazing year with quality racing and great entertainment such as Boyzone.

Chelmsford City’s annual Ladies Day was a sell out, becoming a focal part of the Essex social calendar

2018

Staged 63 fixtures with a massive £5.2 million in prize money, this included the UK’s most valuable evening meeting in history and Chelmsford City Racecourse’s first ever Listed race, the Queen Charlotte Stakes.

Chelmsford City quickly broke this record just two months later with an even more valuable meeting which featured the inaugural running of the Chelmsford City Cup worth an astonishing £100,000

2019

Addition of another Listed race, the Chelmer Stakes

Co-hosted our first music festival, Clockstock, in partnership with the legendary Clockwork Orange. This sell-out festival saw 60 of dance music’s most iconic DJs and acts including Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, and Todd Terry come to the racecourse and deliver undoubtedly the biggest party in Essex.

2020

What looked to be a sensational sixth year at Chelmsford City Racecourse, like most the racecourse found itself disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The racecourse prevailed becoming one of the first to return with ‘behind closed doors’ racing, managing to successfully stage the majority of its calendar as well as preparing to open as one of the South East’s largest vaccination centres in the new year.

The Chelmer Stakes headlined the racing calendar, with course specialist Sean Levey and Happy Romance claiming victory in the thrilling six-furlong sprint. The racecourse also brought world-class music to Essex, hosting Example’s first UK performance since the pandemic in September 2021

The Cardinal Stakes, the racecourse’s premier event, featured a prestigious Conditions race with a remarkable £100,000 prize fund Additionally, to commemorate Racing Together Community Day, the racecourse proudly supported the Eden Project’s Carers Week, raising awareness of unpaid carers and the challenges they face. 2022

Chelmsford City Racecourse hosted its inaugural Remembrance Raceday on Armistice Day, honouring the Armed Forces in partnership with the Royal British Legion. Over £4,000 was raised for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, marking a memorable day of tribute and racing. 2023

2024

 Present

Chelmsford City Racecourse reached new heights with enhanced races, increased prize money, and record-breaking success. Good Friday racing in 2024 set a new benchmark, achieving the highest ticket sales for any racing event that year.

The racecourse revealed its biggest music event yet for 2025, announcing a threeday festival with a daily capacity of 25,000 people. The event will feature major headliners, including Justin Timberlake, Duran Duran, and Olly Murs

CITY SELECTIONS

This is competitive and only a tentative vote can go to BLUE FORCE, who landed a double at Southwell on his return three weeks ago. The lightly-raced son of Blue Point was raised 6lb in the handicap for that performance but there could be more to come on this occasion. One More Dream was well backed when recording a narrow triumph at Pontefract recently and he merits respect back on the all-weather, while others to note include Aces Wild and Charlie Mason.

Supporting Riding for the Disabled, We Met with Beneficiaries at Local Group REACH

Today we are pleased to welcome the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), a remarkable charity celebrating 55 years of enriching lives through the power of horses. RDA is the third organisation we’re supporting through our ‘10 Years of Community’ fundraising campaign.

With over 400 centres across the UK, RDA offers clinically led rehabilitation for individuals as young as two living with physical, mental, social, or learning disabilities. Their therapy combines Physiotherapy, Hippotherapy, Equine Assisted Learning, and Pat therapy

Jo and Beth from Chelmsford City Racecourse recently visited REACH, a local RDA centre, to meet the team and two inspiring beneficiaries, Didge and Albert. They saw first-hand the incredible work being done, including riding sessions, agility training with Shetland ponies, carriage driving, and a calming sensory garden.

Speaking with Didge’s mother Caroline, she shared how the support and services provided by REACH have positively impacted her son’s life.

“When I was looking for things to do to enrich my little one’s life, I thought that as I and all my family love animals and have horses that I would like to take Didge for an experience. I couldn’t find anywhere that would take a two year old with severe mental and physical disabilities, which are; brain damage, autism, cervicothoracic scoliosis, tethered cord syndrome, extreme sensitivity to external stimuli and toe walking.

It was by calling the RDA that I found out about REACH. I had no expectations, just hoped he would show some signs of enjoyment.

To my surprise not only did he enjoy it, but he has also changed; he is much more interested in his environment, he loves to touch things and even interacting with our pet dog, he seems interested in where he is and they have started to enjoy each other’s company

Didge seems so much more vocal and engaging with the world around him and so much stronger and balanced. He is surpassing everyone’s expectations both physically and mentally

I love watching him enjoy himself and do something that is amazing to watch. I cannot praise Louise and all the team at REACH enough.”

Beth Lovell REACH center manager added “The charity was set up about 10 years ago by Louise Barrett whose sister had cerebral palsy, Louise then trained in hippotherapy which led to founding the charity REACH and then becoming part of the RDA group.

We needed to expand our services to support not only children with disabilities but also those struggling with mental health. With the right environment already in place, Louise trained as an equine facilitated practitioner to offer more targeted help. We’re also an accredited alternative education provider, supporting young people in gaining an ‘Animal Care’ qualification.

I started as a volunteer and then gave up my job as a stockbroker as I love it here It is so rewarding seeing the center build children’s confidence, so they can interact and socialise with their peers and other children, and we look forward to helping more people in the future who need it”.

If you would like to donate or meet the team, please visit their stand outside the Parade Ring.

VECU showed considerable promise across his three racecourse appearances last season, earning him a handicap rating of 86. The Gosdens’ colt hasn’t been seen since filling the runner-up spot at Kempton in September, but he returns with his yard amongst the winners and a breakthrough success could be imminent. The Andrew Balding team have made a fine start to the new campaign and Christmas Gift warrants a market check, while Critical Aclaim should not be overlooked either

Probable S.P’s: 13-8 Vecu (IRE), 3-1 Critical Aclaim (GB), 9-2 Christmas Gift (IRE), 11-1 Cosi Bello (GB), 16-1 Uniting (IRE), 33-1 Regal Guest (IRE), Yafaarr (IRE), 50-1 Go Out (FR), 300-1 Maury (IRE), 400-1 Baby Caitlin (IRE)

A valuable 3-y-o maiden that could go to CHRISTMAS GIFT on debut. Her in-form yard has had a number of successful newcomers recently and she makes a fair bit of appeal on paper Vecu lacked scope and proved keen last year but his form reads well and he has obvious claims on his return if he’s trained on. There is more to come from Critical Aclaim who has shown plenty to finish second in a couple of AW events having been well backed.

CITY SELECTIONS

Likely to be dropped in from his wide draw, SIR MAXI looks to hold sound claims having been a slightly unfortunate second over 6f at Newcastle last time out. The gelded son of Adaay travelled into the contest going best approaching the furlong pole before finding trouble. He will perhaps need some luck here, but returning to further will suit and the booking of Jamie Spencer is noteworthy. Split Elevens likes it around here and is respected, along with Bint Havana Gold and Rhythmic Acclaim.

AN INTERVIEW WITH HAYLEY TURNER OBE

Hayley is a pioneer for women in racing, boasting a career full of groundbreaking achievements, culminating in her 1,000th career win while riding Tradesman to victory at Chelmsford. Watch Here

Historically, racing was considered a men’s sport; however, in recent years, significant progress has been made, and women have truly taken the reins. Ladies Day at the races has historically been synonymous with grace, style, and a celebration of women in fashion and status. What once served as a welcoming day for women has now evolved into a platform where they shine both in their attire and in the saddle.

Fast forward to 2025, and the spotlight is no longer solely on the elegant attendees; it is equally shared with the fearless and talented female jockeys who compete at the highest levels of the sport. To honour this evolution, we are proud to share a multi-channel campaign that showcases the remarkable stories of inspirational women on and off the track.

For our 2024 Ladies Day, Chelmsford City Racecourse was proud to collaborate with the renowned national brand Fenwick to celebrate remarkable women making a difference in our county. From inspiring cancer survivors to dedicated carers, we had the privilege of recognising their incredible contributions with thoughtful gifts as a token of our appreciation.

In our first feature, we sat down with Essex-born Charlotte Brew, the trailblazer who made history as the first female jockey to ride in the Grand National in 1977 Now, on International Women’s Day 2025, we continue this journey with an exclusive interview with Hayley Turner OBE, a true pioneer who achieved her 1000th career win right here at Chelmsford City Racecourse.

John Butler’s horses have turned a corner of late and with that in mind, his handily-weighted WINDSOR PASS is highly appealing back to her ideal trip after a respectable fourth-placed finish over a mile at Yarmouth most recently With her old rival Mashaan being a likely pace angle but drawn out wide, this could unfold to ideally suit her closing style of running. Twitch, Kondratiev Wave and Lilkian are others for the shortlist.

CABALLO DE MAR has really flourished since being stepped to this sort of trip and a fifth consecutive success may be forthcoming if the progressive four-year-old copes with another 6lb rise on just his second start on Polytrack. CABALLO DE MAR confirmed he’s one of the most progressive staying handicappers around when an easy winner at Southwell a fortnight ago and on that evidence, a 6lb rise may not be enough to prevent the 5-timer Sixpack has made the switch to James Owen so he’s sure to be well prepared for this return to action, while Liam Swagger is also of interest from the same stable.

SKY MAJESTY made rapid progress as a juvenile, going from winning a maiden at Newbury to landing the Firth Of Clyde at Ayr before rounding off the campaign with a Group 2 win at Chantilly in October Those lofty credentials suggest the upwardly-mobile daughter of Blue Point is too exciting a prospect to overlook, despite this being her debut on a synthetic surface. The class-dropping Jouncy appeals most of the remainder after a gelding operation, although Mr Lightside and Andesite are others capable of being in the mix.

The hat-trick seeking Mister Mojito displayed a willing attitude when completing a double at Lingfield eight days ago and another bold bid is forecast. However, a 5lb penalty demands another career best from the four-year-old and preference is for fellow progressive rival MIDNIGHT’S DREAM. Roger Varian’s charge scored with something in hand at Leicester earlier this month and a 6lb higher mark is unlikely the ceiling of his ability. Westernesse is also noted.

The combination of a 147-day break and gelding procedure saw NOTIMEFORCHITCHAT regaining the winning thread over 7f at Kempton last month. The son of Time Test is bred to relish today’s extra three furlongs and he could find enough improvement to defy a 3lb nudge up in the ratings. The biggest threat may emerge from Cristo, who offered plenty of encouragement on his second-placed seasonal debut at Southwell 16 days ago, ahead of Dalmally
